Samantha Fish / Cassie Taylor / Dani Wild - Girls With Guitars The name says it all. "Girls with Guitars" - the 2011 Ruf Records Blues Caravan Tour - presents three of the scene's hottest young female guitar slingers on a single stage. Over the past six years, the Blues Caravan has toured successfully in the UK, USA and throughout continental Europe. This unique triple bill revue has helped introduce bright new stars such as Ana Popovic and Joanne Shaw Taylor to an international audience. Following in their footsteps on the 2011 tour is a trio of dynamic, up-and-coming blues talents: Dani Wilde, Cassie Taylor and Samantha Fish. Hailing from Brighton, England, Dani Wilde sings the blues with the old-school fervor of Aretha Franklin, but also takes a cue from contemporaries like Duffy and Joss Stone. The singer/songwriter/guitarist has just released her second album, Shine, a collaboration with renowned producer Mike Vernon (Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac). She has shared stages with luminaries like Robben Ford, Candye Kane and Koko Taylor. Says Paul Jones of BBC Radio 2: "Dani Wilde's voice is astounding, with a unique raw passion and energy. She sings with more conviction and passion than old legends from the Mississippi Delta." At the tender age of 21, Samantha Fish is already a hot property on the live music scene in and around her hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. She discovered the blues almost by accident as a teenager, but it has since become her singular mission in life. Her high-heeled, rock-edged performances have won her a loyal local following and carried her to venues like Rosa's Lounge in Chicago, where she opened eyes during the 2010 Chicago Blues Festival. 2011 seems destined to be her breakout year. Proud to call herself the "Daughter of a Bluesman," multi-instrumentalist Cassie Taylor has appeared on eight critically-acclaimed albums by her father, Otis Taylor, and accompanied him on tours all over the world. She was also a featured vocalist on Gary Moore's 2008 release Bad For You Baby. Still just in her early 20s, Cassie has been hailed for her commanding stage presence and "heavenly" voice (Boston Globe). Her music ranges from heart-wrenching ballads to hard-driving blues. Like her father, Taylor doesn't shy from topical subject matter, nor shrink from breaching musical boundaries. This trio of young, passionate performers is backed by a top-flight band of road-tested professionals for more than two hours of live blues excellence. As a foretaste for their upcomining shows around the world, the three guitarists recorded a common album in November 2010 in Berlin at the Studio Erde, which will be released to the blast-off to their tour. None other than Mike Zito produced the album. Multiple Blues Award Winner in Memphis 2010. On the album are ten own songs, like the earthshaking Get Back ("a real Killer" - Daniel Böhm, ROCKS Magazine 01/2011) or the laid-back Wait A Minute, and two covers of two really great songs. Bitch from the Rolling Stones ( therefore, the girls produced also a video - see www.bluescaravan.com ) and Jet Airliner, well-known by the Steve Miller Band.

Saunders King - Cool Blues, Jumps & Shuffles If there is a forgotten hero of the blues guitar then it has to be Saunders King. Think about it. He scored with S K Blues in 1942, way before T-Bone Walker, Pee Wee Crayton and B.B. King hit the charts. Even S K Blues itself is not that well remembered although, inevitably and inimitably, Juke Blues editor Cilla Huggins can recall Howling Wolf's great guitarist Willie Johnson performing the song in 1970. Our Saunders King compilation is drawn from his Rhythm and Modern recordings from 1942 through 1954. This is one of those rewarding projects that developed a life of its own. Opal Nations, that intrepid San Francisco blues and gospel researcher, had proposed the CD to me two years ago and had already gone as far as writing a draft note. That's confidence for you! It helped that Saunders King was from the Bay Area, so Opal was able to conduct innovatory background research. Then I was able to acquire some wonderful vintage photographs and memorabilia from Saunders King's daughters, Kitsaun and Deborah. As it happens, Deborah is the wife of superstar Carlos Santana, and she arranged for Carlos to write a testimony for the CD. This extract reflects his sentiments: "The first time I heard the music of Saunders King I felt deep respect and admiration for the manifested elegance, grace, dignity, beauty and raw sensuality." Say no more. When it came to the mastering process, our archivist Peter Gibbon and I found that many of the Rhythm acetates (acquired by Modern in 1949) were mislabelled. With the help of collector Victor Pearlin, I was able to compare the acetates with the original, rare 78 rpm records to ascertain that we had the correct takes as well as the correct song titles. Following this exercise, Peter and I were in a position to update the standard Soul Bag discography and this revised version is published in the booklet. Selection highlights include that first big hit S K Blues on Rhythm (later reissued as New S K Blues on RPM) and the magical What's Your Story Morning Glory. Then there are the two 1949 R&B chart hits (that's all), Empty Bedroom Blues (Modern) and Stay Gone Blues (Rhythm). The rest is an engaging assortment of West Coast cool blues, jumps and shuffles with a dash of evergreen standards. The net result is an attractive package that will stand as the definitive CD overview of Saunders King's career on record. It should also elevate his status as a true pioneer of the electric blues guitar and R&B generally. By John Broven (Ace Records)

Shirelles - Swing The Most / Hear & Now In 1964, the Shirelles had all reached the age that would permit them to access royalties that had supposedly been accruing on their behalf. When they approached their record label, Scepter, for what they believed was owed to them, all they had coming was another think. Their big hits of the previous three years – including ‘Soldier Boy’, ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’ and ‘Mama Said’ – had seemingly amounted to very little in terms of folding money. They sued Scepter for non-payment and went on strike at what turned out to be a crucial time in respect of their future success. Not everyone was as angry with Scepter as the Shirelles were. The fall out actually proved to be a blessing in disguise for fans as, with the girls refusing to record, label boss Florence Greenberg was forced to trawl the vaults for hitherto unreleased masters. Such great singles as ‘Sha-La-La’ were the result of the vault excavation, along with two original albums that make up Ace’s fourth Shirelles 2-On-1, “Swing The Most” and “Hear & Now”. Both albums were originally released on Pricewise, a new budget subsidiary of Scepter. There’s little doubt that Mrs Greenberg saw them as potboilers, designed to keep the name of her flagship group out there while they were refusing to record. Shirelles fans saw them differently, and still do. To them – us! – these are every bit as potent as their best official releases and considerably better than some of them. “Swing The Most” in particular is full of sensational sides that might otherwise have sat on a shelf for decades, among them the original versions of ‘Oh No, Not My Baby’ and ‘Get Rid Of Him’, to name just two of its many delights. The writer credits for the unissued material on both albums reads like a who’s who of New York’s finest tunesmiths of the day – Goffin & King, Van McCoy, Ed Townsend, Don Covay, Toni Wine, Luther Dixon and others of equally incomparable calibre. From a distance of 45 years, it’s almost inconceivable to think that their first rate submissions for the girls might not have been heard at the time, but for a fall out over money. Although these albums were originally issued only in mono, many of the tracks were mixed into real stereo at the time. Wherever possible, we have gone for the stereo versions, in order to provide a fresh perspective on both familiar and unfamiliar repertoire. We have also reinstated ‘That Boy Is Messin’ Up My Mind’ into the running order of “Swing The Most” – it featured on the album cover, front and back, but never made it to the vinyl. “Swing The Most” and “Hear & Now” rank as two of the best girl group albums of all time and it’s a privilege to have them on Ace at long last. by TONY ROUNCE (Ace Records)

Shirley & Lee - Rock 'Let The Good Times Roll' is a rock 'n' roll milestone, inspiring film titles, book titles and two dozen versions from Soul to Merseybeat to Reggae. This collection presents unforgettable duets from the Golden Age of New Orleans R&B, 31 tracks from 'The Sweethearts Of The Blues' at their rockin', rollin', carnival best. Other compilations leave off 'I Feel Good' or 'Feel So Good', mistakenly thinking they're the same song. They are not! And this has both of these Top 10 R&B Hits. Shirley's voice ' it's been called 'a razorblade, a mix of comic distortions, sexual excitement, and gothic chill.' Featuring the sizzling New Orleans session men, including drummer Earl Palmer and tenorist Lee Allen. 'Shirley & Lee Rock' contains 31 of the duo's most blistering platters, drawing heavily on their Aladdin catalog but also encompassing a few delicious early '60s sides from their stints at Warwick and Imperial. And we can't leave off 'I'm Gone', even if it is a ballad ' it closes this spectacular disc as a very welcome bonus track !

| Shirley Gunter - Oop Shoop - The Flair And Modern Recordings 1953-1957 Shirley Gunter and the Queens are often cited as being the first fully-fledged female doo wop group. Even if that’s impossible to prove with 100% accuracy, they were certainly among the first in that field. What is beyond question, is the fact that their 1954 Flair recording of Oop Shoop was the first record of its kind to make a national impact, in the early days of rock‘n’roll. That’s to say that it was the first to be written and performed, with any degree of success, by a group of young black women. Although we’ve featured several of Shirley’s recordings on numerous Ace CD and vinyl compilations down the years, it’s perhaps surprising to note that we’ve never actually given the lady her own full-length album. The news of her upcoming debut UK appearance in November, at this year’s Rhythm Riot, gave us the timely reminder that we had yet to do so. Thus it was that earlier this year I had the extreme pleasure of reviewing all of Ms Gunter’s 1950s Flair and Modern tapes, with a view to putting such a compilation together – a task that I found both enjoyable and easy! A CD entitled Oop Shoop is, perhaps inevitably, the result. Shirley formed the Queens with some high school friends, largely at the urging of her famous brother Cornel – future member of the Coasters and, back in ’54, a key component of the Flairs, who were signed to the Bihari brothers’ label of that name. You can read in full about the way Shirley’s career panned out in Jim Dawson’s extensive sleevenotes, but I can tell you that it was Cornel who arranged for Shirley to audition for the Biharis and that, suitably impressed, the brothers signed her more or less on the spot. She recorded her first couple of 45s as a solo act. Fine as they were, they made little headway and it wasn’t until Shirley brought in both three high school friends and an uptempo shuffle number that she had worked up with one of said friends, Blondene Taylor, that things started to happen. Oop Shoop was cut in just a couple of takes and the rest is, well, certainly rock ‘n’ roll history at the very least! Shirley recorded a few more 78/45s with the Queens, before teaming up with the brother and the rest of the Flairs for a number of equally fine releases. Of those Headin’ Home came closest to becoming a real hit without actually making a significant national impact. Shirley then wound down her time with what was now Modern records by going out the same way she came in, with a couple more solo releases. Although she never had another hit of note, a quick listen to things like her original version of the Platters’ I’m Sorry and the catchy Ipsy Opsie Ooh will demonstrate that this was neither for the lack of trying, nor of talent. Not all of Shirley’s tapes have survived the passage of time, so there are a couple of disc dubs included here But I’m especially delighted that we have at last been able to reissue Oop Shoop itself from the original 45rpm production master tape. This was thought for many years to have permanently vanished, and up to now Ace and everybody else who’s reissued it has been using an excellent ‘safety copy’ tape. However, the actual tape for both sides of the 45 turned up in the Flip tape inventory when Ace purchased that catalogue a few years back. We don’t know how it got there, and we’re not asking questions – but we were very glad that it had found its way home, and we’re delighted to give the original tape of Oop Shoop its first digitisation in this CD! There’s little doubt that Oop Shoop’s simplistic lyric and irrepressible beat also paved the way for the future success of rockin’ fillies like the Bobbettes - or that, a little further down the line, it also provided an inspirational root for any number of Cookies, Marvelettes, Jaynettes, Chantels and Supremes that you care to mention. Our package features all of Shirley’s commercial recordings for Flair and Modern, plus three rare demos cut with just the accompaniment of a piano and the Flairs – and thus it also features almost everything she ever recorded, as beyond these there are only two isolated singles, on other labels, to complete her discography! In a recording career that barely spanned three years, Shirley had been a member of the first hitmaking female doo-wop group, she’d written or co-written many of her biggest hits and best recordings – and she’d given rock‘n’roll one of its earliest and best anthems, in the immortal Oop Shoop. She quit the recording scene, like so many of her distaff peers, to marry and raise a family. It’s a shame that she didn’t stick it out a bit longer, but her accomplishments during her active career would be more than enough to satisfy many whose time in showbusiness was thrice that of Shirley Gunter’s. | Six Teens - A Casual Look Barely a teenager when the song was recorded, Trudy Williams' plaintive lead on the Six Teens' A Casual Look is one of the haunting memories of the classic age of the doo wop sound. Initially taken along by her elder sister Louise to a rehearsal of the Los Angeles-based group founded by songwriter Ed Wells, Trudy was voted in as a member after they heard her voice. She became the sixth teen even though she hadn't really qualified for the title. Their first recording, done in March 1956, produced one of the most durable sounds of the vocal group era and one which is still to be heard on oldies radio today. Written by Ed Wells, A Casual Look made it to #7 on the R&B lists and #25 in the pop chart. and attracted cover versions. One of the best was by Little Clydie & The Teens on RPM which can be found on MODERN VOCAL GROUPS Vol 4 (Ace CDCHD 764). A Casual Look started a career for the group on Los Angeles' Flip label for which they recorded no less than a dozen singles. All of these are included on this CD, a collection of their complete recordings for the label. It features 25 tracks since, in addition to the version of Teenage Promise released as by the Six Teens, Trudy and her sister recorded a faster version which was released as late as 1963 as by Trudy and Louise. Label billing was something that changed quite a bit for the group. Starting with the vanilla Six Teens name, there were several records that carried the group name featuring 14 Yr. old Trudy Williams or just plain Trudy Williams. One release You're My Boyfriend / A Foolish Little Girl even foreswore the name of the group and was released as by Trudy Williams with vocal accompaniment. Despite the changes of billing, the group members were fairly much the same throughout their recording career. As well as Trudy, her sister Louise and the group's founder Ed Wells, the Six Teens comprised Kenny Sinclair, Darryl Lewis and Beverly Pecot. Louise and Beverly also 'moonlighted' for the label behind lead Richard Owens as the Ivy Leaguers and can be heard on Deposit Your Love (In The Bank Of My Heart), another Ed Wells-penned ballad, on the compilation Flip Doo Wop Vol 2 (Ace CDCHD 838). In 1957, Kenny Sinclair left the group and was replaced by Richard Owens. He then, in turn, was replaced by Jimmie Smith. Trudy and Jimmie can be heard duetting on the up-tempo So Happy. Kenny, Darryl and Jimmy also recorded for the Flip label as the Elgins. One of the keys to the the success of the group lies with the nature of the songs that Ed Wells put together for them. Many of these were 'story' songs whose lyrics progressed throughout the number as opposed to the more repetitive and more ephemeral lyrics which were quite common in the second half of the 50s. Good examples are Afar Into The Night, Only Jim, Was It A Dream Of Mine, and My Surprise. As the group grew up together through what Beverly Pecot calls the 'age of innocence', their material grew more mature in tone. This is reflected in selections like Love's A Funny That Way, Heaven Knows I Love You, That Wonderful Secret Of Love and one of the few songs not written by Ed Wells, the Richard Berry-penned A Foolish Little Girl. However the group called the changes, they unfortunately never repeated their initial success of A Casual Look and with the end of the Flip label, they went their separate ways. The 1990s saw the Six Teens re-formed and they appeared on radio and in oldies shows. Ed Wells and Richard Owens have unfortunately passed away recently, but Kenny Sinclair, Darryl Lewis and Jimmie Smith are still performing in a re-formed Elgins group, along with original member William DeVase. The Elgins will feature in the forthcoming compilation FLIP DOO WOP - VOLUME 3. Compiled by Gordon Skadberg and the guys at Early Bird Records, the CD's extensive notes feature interviews with the surviving group members. The group may never have had an album in their career but now there's a chance to hear the complete catalogue of Trudy Williams and the Six Teens on Flip Records. By Peter Gibbon (Ace Records) |
