VA: - Floyd's Early Cajun Singles
Swallow Records, still run by the personable Floyd Soileau and based in Ville Platte, Louisiana, is the most important and prolific Cajun record label of all. In the 1980s, Ace Records was the first UK label to delve deeply into the Swallow Records catalogue and so bring Cajun music to the masses.

With Floyd's Early Cajun Singles we go to the very beginning of Floyd Soileau's career as a record man. Starting out as a teenage disc jockey with Radio KVPI, Ville Platte, he began selling records as a sideline in 1956 before founding the famous Floyd's Record Shop. Realizing there was a dearth of Cajun product, Floyd released in late 1957 a single on 78 and 45 on Big Mamou Records by accordionist Milton Molitor with Austin Pitre on fiddle. Then Soileau started the Vee-Pee label (named after the initials of his home town) with accordion stars Lawrence Walker and Aldus Roger.

In 1958 Floyd formed the Jin and Swallow labels with no clear musical divisions. After scoring big regional hits by Rod Bernard and Jivin' Gene on Jin, Floyd earmarked Jin exclusively for his popular singles, with Swallow being strictly Cajun music. In this late 1950s period, Cajun artists were absorbing the 'honky tonk' country influence, with the fiddle and steel guitar prominent alongside the imperious accordion. The music here is of joyous two-steps and poignant waltzes in an age when the local dance hall was still the fulcrum of Cajun society.
Our CD booklet features colourful reminiscences from Floyd Soileau and rare photographs from the Johnnie Allan collection.

Needless to say, the original 45s and 78s are gold-plated, impossible-to-find collectors' items. But this is not just a CD release for record collectors and music historians, it should also appeal to lovers of any downhome music and the throng of Cajun dancers. Most of all, it is a terrific tribute to Floyd Soileau who helped to preserve this music at a time when few others cared. Another first for Ace!

VA: - Frisco Records Story
During the early 1960s, the New Orleans record scene was red hot. Among the unforgettable hits streaming out of Cosimo Matassa's funky recording studio on Governor Nicholls Street were Walking To New Orleans by Fats Domino, Mother-In-Law by Ernie K-Doe, Ooh Poo Pah Doo by Jessie Hill, Do-Re-Mi by Lee Dorsey and But I Do by Clarence Henry.

In New Orleans itself, you can add to this list of perennial favourites Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye and Loan Me A Handkerchief by Danny White, and Men Of War by the Rouzan Sisters from the Frisco label. The Danny White records sold in excess of 100,000 each in New Orleans and along the Gulf coast, but hardly a box elsewhere.

Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye was pure gold, and or it should have been. A bitter-sweet ballad of betrayed love written by Al Reed, it was a natural hit. But Frisco, like many indie labels before and since, just did not have the resources to handle a national hit, and it was something of a mistake to place national distribution with another small organisation, Arlen Records of Philadelphia. And so a major hit was lost. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye should have had the same success as the later, similarly ethereal, Tell It Like It Is by Aaron Neville.

Now at last, we are putting the record straight by releasing not only the original 45 of Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, but also a stereo out-take with Danny advertising an upcoming gig in 1963 at Harlem's Rockland Palace.

Frisco Records was formed in 1962 by chicken restaurateur Connie LaRocca and disc jockey Hal Atkins, right in the midst of all those seeming never-ending New Orleans R&B hits. LaRocca and Atkins must have been impressed by the hit strike rate of other local independent labels such as Ric/Ron, Minit/Instant and AFO.

During its lifespan of some four years, Frisco released 20 singles featuring Danny White, Wanda Rouzan and the Rouzan Sisters, Willie West (later lead vocalist with The Meters), Porgy Jones & the Polka Dots, and Al Adams (actually label co-owner Hal Atkins). Most of the sessions were produced at Cosimo's famous studio with all-star session men such as Art Neville, Dr. John, Alvin Robinson and Smokey Johnson. The chief musical director was Wardell Querzerque, who masterminded later hits such as Barefootin' by Robert Parker and Groove Me by King Floyd. The band sound is big and fat with that irresistible second-line beat. A notable thing about the Frisco recordings is the quality of the songwriting from the pens of the highly respected Al Reed and Earl King.

Not everything was recorded in New Orleans. In 1964 Danny White was sent to the Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee where he was produced by the upcoming team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Can't Do Nothing Without You and My Living Doll come from this session, with accompanists including the Memphis Horns and the Hi Rhythm Section.

This high quality material from Frisco, much of it in stereo, has never been reissued in any form, and charts the progression of New Orleans music from classic R&B to early soul. The story is pulled together by noted New Orleans historian Tad Jones. This time out, the Frisco recordings will be heard far and beyond the Crescent City.

The Frisco Story is a welcome addition to our growing New Orleans R&B catalogue, spearheaded by the two series, Fats Domino's Imperial Singles and Gumbo Stew (from the AFO label) and not forgetting all those great Specialty releases.

VA: - Further Mellow Cats 'N' KIttens - Hot R&B and Cool Blues
The “Mellow Cats’n’Kittens” series has been a pleasure for me to work on during the past few years. I’d always admired my late friend and colleague Ray Topping’s work on the Modern catalogue and I’ve tried to maintain and build on what he started. While I don’t pretend to have Ray’s dedicated appreciation of discographical minutiae, I’d like to think that, with this and a host of other projects, I’ve also done my bit to keep alive the wonderful productions of the Modern Music Company’s founder, Jules Bihari.

For the fifth volume in the series, we’ve taken the opportunity to complete the digitisation of the Modern discographies of several artists who have appeared on previous volumes, such as the Three Bits Of Rhythm and Felix Gross. We’re also premiering tracks by mainstays of the Modern catalogue that were previously thought lost (Jimmy Witherspoon’s first solo Modern track, ‘Motel’) or were undiscovered until relatively recently (our Hadda Brooks track, located on the back of a Smokey Hogg acetate).

There are quality cuts by past contributors such as Sylvester “Big Duke” Henderson, the equally “Big” Jim Wynn, Herb Fisher and Johnny Alston’s Orchestra – all fine purveyors of the kind of music that lit up Central Avenue in the decade immediately following the end of WWII. Our other points of call include Houston, Texas, where we take in selections from Gory (sic) Carter’s lone Modern session, before heading south west to New Orleans for a cut by the George Alexander band that was originally disguised as the work of Ramp Davis. Back on the west coast we feature the great boogie pianist Pete “P.K.” Johnson rollin’ ’em just as he did for so long with Big Joe Turner, and jazz guitar/vocal group legend Teddy Bunn jamming with a hot trio led by Kansas City piano king Jay McShann. For those who, like me, couldn’t experience the era personally, or the venues from which music like this poured seven nights a week, it’s the next best thing to being there.

As ever, deeper research has allowed us to include a copious amount of previously unissued recordings to add further spice to what is already a potent mix – 9 in total. Although this is the fifth instalment of “Mellow Cat’n’Kittens”, the contents are as strong as on any previous volume – and there’s still plenty of quality vintage Modern repertoire slated for reissue in the next few years.

Jump you some boogie? We certainly can, man!

VA: - Get On Board Little Children
The train waiting at the platform is the gospel train to glory! Get on board, little children, get on board! If Modern Records never approached the gospel field in the systematic way they did the blues one, they still captured some great performances. The Rev. C C Chapman (The Travelin' Shoes Man) and The Faith Temple Choir cut their solitary classic record for Modern - their On My Way is backed by jazzy organ, propulsive drumming and fervent handclapping. The Four Star Quartet's single recording Steal Away To Jesus was made in 1952 but never issued until now. The Echoes Of Zion sides were originally recorded for the Gerald label and bought by Modern in 1950. The sides here by this exciting Atlanta group showcase their use of switch lead singers on traditional songs such as Jacob's Ladder and On The Battlefield. The authoritative voices of the Revs Louis H Narcisse and James Earle Hines are also featured as are the sophisticated harmonies of The Smith Jubilee Singers, the San-Francisco-based Swanee River Quartet and the preacher-with-flock recording of the Rev G W Killens and his Mount Calvary Congregation recorded during a service at the Oakland City Auditorium. Killens is reported as saying "Once in a while, I like to hear the church sing" and on Father, I Stretch My Arms To Thee, they do just that and to stunning effect.

VA: - Golden Age Of American R&R - Special Doo Wop Edition Vol. 2
Special Editions of “The Golden Age of American Rock’n’Roll” have to be special to justify their existence and sequels, such as this, are subjected to even greater analytical scrutiny in the preparation process than even the preceding volume, thus avoiding the sense of déjà vu that blights many a follow-up work. Considering that doo wop was a largely American phenomenon and very much of its time, Ace’s Special Doo Wop Edition proved exceptionally popular.

Volume 2 mines the same rich seam of vocal group splendour – only it digs deeper, to bring us many of the more obscure or lesser doo wop hits – but hits nonetheless – by groups lost to posterity, counterbalanced by some better known names. Point is, they’re all great records and, as the majority of titles appear here on a legitimate CD for the first time (with the benefit of high quality mastering) both aficionados and the casual listener will find much to savour in this 30-track package.

Compiled by the painstakingly fastidious Rob Finnis and Trevor Churchill, Doo Wop 2 is programmed as much for listening pleasure as for its archival value. At this distance, one is struck by the purity of the performances – it’s the voices that win over every time, confirming doo wop’s standing as one of the truest American art forms.

The detailed and entertaining annotation by the American doo wop authority Peter Grendysa combined with the rare pictures in the mega-booklet bring the same warm glow to the senses as the music itself. Enjoy!

VA: - Got Them Hillbilly Blues - 32 black blues boppers
While it is not often documented, it stands to reason that of all the many black artists who were influenced by country music radio in their childhood, a percentage would grow into maturity with a real feeling for hillbilly music and incorporate the style it into their own musical heritage, just as the white rockabillies introduced an urban blues element into their country music.

This album has been compiled to showcase this inverted spin on the conception of rockabilly - got them Hill Billy Blues?
