| Big Town Playboys - Hip Joint The best revival R&B band in Britain are back on disc after a six-year break from recording. Hailing orginally from the West Midlands, the Big Town Playboys is fronted by the great pianist and vocalist Mike Sanchez and underpinned by the bass of long-time cohort Ian Jennings. In the band's early days ex-Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack bassist Andy Sylvester and leader Ricky Cool were also involved. Now ex-Amen Corner singer Andy Fairweather-Low has joined the group on guitar and vocals bringing his formidable talents to the outfit.The Playboys' appearance at the 1996 Eric Clapton shows is the third time as Eric's special guests but the band's history is interwoven with great names - many who have invited them to put their unique skills on record (Eric Clapton on his Colour Of Money score, Jeff Beck on the Crazy Legs CD and Anne Dudley on her Pope Must Die soundtrack, for instance). Add to that regular support for such visiting American greats as Little Willie Littlefield, Jimmy Nelson and Champion Jack Dupree, and you have one of the most sharp, most jumping R&B bands this side of the Atlantic. |

| Big Town Playboys - Now Appearing The CD album of the best live R&B band on the club scene. They opened for Eric Clapton on his three blues nights during one of his mammoth 18 show stints at the Albert Hall. Not only did they go down well with the punters at this event, but blues guitar star Robert Cray was so impressed that he invited them to play his wedding the following week. Robert Plant also used the boys as a backing band for a TV special and they were the regular backing band for Little Willie Littlefield on his visits to the UK. Singer, pianist and all round smoothest dude in town, Mike Sanchez leads the other 4 Playboys through a dozen stomping R&B originals and covers, including Roy Montrell's "That Mellow Saxophone", Willie Eagan's "What A Shame" and the McCracklin classic,"The Wobble". So throw away your prejudices about whether or not rhythm and blues men can play the whites and flip your wig to the uptown sound of the Big Town Playboys. If it's good enough for the likes of Willie Littlefield and Robert Cray, then be assured, it's good enough for you |
