Kokoonpanon muodostavat Leif Knief (laulu), Pekka Miettinen (laulu ja kitara), Petteri Littu (kitara), Jari Pätsikkö (basso, foni), Timo Qvintus (foni) ja Reijo Kolu (rummut). Solisteja lukuun ottamatta koko remmi hakkaa käsillään tahtia ja osallistuvat taustalauluun. Vahvistusta settiin antavat fonisti Arto Mutanen sekä pianisti Hannu Elonen. Kummitusmusiikkia! Sillä nimellä tällaista tavaraa takavuosina kutsuttiin. Pelin henki on jump & jive sekä r&b, eli rock and rollia ajalta ennen koko ilmiön syntymää, joskin pari makoisaa puikahdusta tehdään myös 60-luvun puolelle. Ajatus siitä, että tällainen pumppu on veivannut jossakin kellarissa näin pitkään pääsemättä esiin muuten kuin lähipiirinsä tapahtuvan diggailun kohteena tuntuu aivan käsittämättömältä. Parempi kuitenkin myöhään, tai ehkä bändi on ”vain” halunnut soitella omaksi ilokseen. Äärimmäisen tyylikkäästä lopputuotteesta kuuluu läpi lajityypin pitkä harrastus sekä asiaan hartaudella paneutuminen. Niitä kaikista tutuimpia coverointeja on vältelty sutjakkaasti, eikä bändi pyri rikkomaan mitään nopeus- saati volyymiennätyksiä. Hyväksi vertailukohdaksi käy KnockOut Greg Blue Weather -yhtyeineen. Peli polkaistaan käyntiin reippaalla boogiewoogiella (1, James ”Widemouth” Brown), joka keinuttaa ja temmeltää erinomaisessa, lähes pitelemättömässä menossa. Jump on pohjana myös raidalla (4, Roy Hawkins), jonka nasevasti säröllään oleva soundipolitiikka virkistää. Melankolisuus ja villi viidakkomainen rytmiikka kohtaavat onnellisesti raidalla (5, Jimmy Nolen), ja kitara soi eläväisesti. Roy Brown on tämän genren kuninkaallisia ja häneltä on valikoitunut mukaan peräti kaksi esitystä. Raita (6) nyt on reipasta jump-ilkamointia jos mikä ja foni saa kyytiä. Ravi on ehkä vielä hitusen rivakampaa Brownin toisella esityksellä (10), biisin tempo on lähes pelottava. Vaan eipä puutu vauhtia levyn päätökseltäkään (12, Doc Starkes), meininkiä kuvailee parhaiten termi pitelemätön. Liikkeelle ei olla lähdetty pelkän lainamateriaalin varassa, ja bändin uusiotuotannosta on kuultavissa, kuinka tarkkaan lajityypin aihepiirit on tutkailtu. Perinnettä kunnioitetaan, mutta sitä ollaan myös valmiita viemään eteenpäin. Raidan (2) tekijä on mystinen ”Boba”, nimi joka löytyy jokaiselta uusioraidalta. Itse biisi liikahtelee säröisän riffin varassa letkeästi jumppaillen. Kierrokset nousevat selvästi raidalla (7), rockaavan jumpin meno maistuu makoisalta nytkin, eikä seassa ole mitään jäähdyttelyfiiliksiä. Raita (11) on puolestaan silkkaa noveltya ja keskitempo-esityksessä on oikein reippaasti kieli poskessa -meininkiä. Setistä irtoaa vielä komea r&b-slovari (3, Zuzu Bollin?), joka viljelee vahvaa tunnelatausta. Blues-numero (8, Jimmy Hughes) on uhkaava, jopa hieman pelottava biisi, jota kannattelee vallan mainio säröllään oleva riffi. Ja onhan täällä yksi duettokin: siivu (9, Little Anthony & Blues Imperials?) liikkuu keskitempoisena ja vähän alakulotunnelmissa, mutta toimii hienosti. Vierailevana solistinaan vahvaääninen Kati Markkanen, jonka kanssa duetoi Leif Knief. Six years after the last set of Muddy Waters’ Chess recordings by Hip-O Select, the boutique label will release You Shook Me: The Chess Masters Volume 3 1958-1963 next week. While Waters’ profile was well on the rise before the period covered on this two-disc set – having put singles like “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man,” “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and “Mannish Boy” in the upper reaches of the R&B charts – You Shook Me is notable for being anchored not only around single releases but two of Waters’ first LPs. 1960′s Muddy Waters Sings “Big Bill” was a tribute to Big Bill Broonzy, the Chicago bluesman who gave Waters one of his first major professional breaks opening for him at local clubs. The other, recorded that same year, was Muddy Waters at Newport 1960, a killer of a live album that featured revelatory versions of “Hoochie Coochie Man” and “Got My Mojo Workin.’” This 49-track set also includes one unreleased instrumental, “Sweet Black Angel,” and a handful of songs that appeared only on a multi-LP box set of Waters’ Chess output released in Japan. Mary Katherin Aldin pens liner notes for the booklet, which is filled with rare photos of Waters in action. |

| Nick Curran - Reform School Girl Nick Curran describes his music as a cocktail consisting of the sounds of no less than seventeen widely differing musicians blended together with a cup of broken glass. That only begins to characterize the wallop packed by the 98-proof elixir of this singer, songwriter and monster guitarist who effortlessly carries the past with him as he blazes across the musical landscape in perpetual forward motion. Curran began his professional career at age nineteen, leaving Maine to tour with Ronnie Dawson. Although Dawson was primarily a rockabilly musician, many blues and punk fans appreciated his performances. He taught Curran not to get pigeonholed. Curran toured next with Texas rockabilly doyenne Kim Lenz, moving to Dallas to join her backup band the Jaguars for two years, and performing on Lenz’s recording, “The One And Only.” Nick would stay with the Jaguars for two years. He is also featured on Lenz’s latest CD, “It’s All True,” and recently toured with her in the summer of 2009. In 1999 the Texas Jamboree label issued Curran’s debut solo recording, “Fixin' Your Head.” As he would do on all future CDs, Curran used vintage recording equipment to achieve the feel and sound of old 45s and 78s, and the LPs of the 1950s. To support the recording he formed the band, Nick Curran and the Nitelifes, whose performances whipped audiences to frenzied devotion with their wild ride of retro, yet fresh and edgy rock ‘n’ roll, boogie, R&B, jump blues and a variety of other tasty stylistic devils in the details. A second Texas Jamboree CD, “Nitelife Boogie,” followed in 2001. When Curran moved to Austin, Jimmie Vaughan, who had heard his CDs, invited him to sit in on a set at Antone’s. Vaughan would make a guest appearance on two tracks on Nick’s next recording, “Dr. Velvet,” which garnered the 2004 W.C. Handy Award (now the Blues Music Award) for "Best New Artist Debut." From 2004 to 2007 Curran displayed his talents with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kim Wilson’s legendary band, appearing on their 2005 recording, “Painted On.” Also during that time, Curran and bassist Ronnie James started the punk band Deguello, saying that it “sounded as if Little Richard sang with The Ramones.” After performing a solo show in November, 2008, Nick was inspired to form the rock ‘n’ roll roots band, The Lowlifes. “Reform School Girl” is a culmination of Curran’s multitude of talents: a throwback to his roots, only amped up to the limit. “I’ve written more songs on ‘Reform School Girl’ than on any other records. I wanted it to have no filler – only good stuff. All my influences are there, from old blues like Lazy Lester and T-Bone Walker to girl groups like The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las, to Guns N Roses.” The album also features a couple of appearances by some of Nick’s close personal friends including a duet on the song “Flyin’ Blind,” co-written with Blasters’ frontman Phil Alvin, as well as harmonica ace Jason Ricci on “Reel Rock Party.” Catch Nick Curran as he shakes, rattles and rolls a head-spinning combination of genres and tunes into a cool, irresistible cocktail that is rough and ready for action.
