Clifton Chenier - Zodico Blues And Boogie You say Zodico I say Zydeco, whichever way you say it, Clifton Chenier was the undisputed King & these 1955 Specialty sides go a long way to proving it. To this day, Clifton Chenier is probably the best known name in zydeco music. Much of this recognition was fuelled by Clifton being championed as the first major star after the rediscovery of the music in the early '60s (perhaps discovery would be a better word as most American and European listeners had never heard sounds like these before). Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records began issuing albums by Clifton in 1964 and it was his involvement that led to around a dozen new albums of Chenier being recorded plus a wealth of reissued cajun and zydeco archive material (dating from the 1920s through to the '50s) making it to microgroove. Clifton played festivals, his material was licensed to labels like Blue Thumb (Harvest in England) and he appeared in the Les Blank documentary Hot Pepper. Health problems beset him in the 70s and, following an operation to amputate his foot, he died on 12 December 1987. His distinctive blend of zydeco accordion tradition, Louisiana swamp blues rhythms and the latest (often Excello label) R&B hits made his zydeco brand of blues and boogie a potent brew and an influence on many that followed after him. Go to a gig by either Queen Ida or Rockin' Dopsie, for instance, and you are hearing Clifton's legacy writ large. Long before his 1964 (re)discovery, however, Clifton, then a regional performer of note, had cut sessions for Specialty. Three singles were released, Ay-Te Te Fee b/w Boppin The Rock, being a particular best seller and getting Clifton booked into a large R&B package show which included Etta James, Lowell Fulsom and Jimmy Reed. Most of the Specialty material remained on the shelf until 1971, when the Bayou Blues album appeared. For Zodico Blues & Boogie, Ray Topping has dug deep into the Specialty vaults and come up with not only a fuller appraisal of the artist's work for the label, but one more truthful to the sounds going down in the studio at the time. Many of the issued titles, including those on Bayou Blues had been doctored technologically by overdubbing and splicing intercuts. Zodico Blues & Boogie presents these sides for the first time without the sweeteners. Diamonds in the rough, as they were heard back in 1955. (Ace Records)

Cookie And The Cupcakes - Kings Of Swamp Pop I suspect that during the golden age of swamp pop, which is often said to be from 1958 to 1963, few people in this country had heard of Cookie and the Cupcakes. I confess ignorance until the 70s when I bought their reissue LPs on the Jin label. Today, any aficionado will immediately quote Mathilda as the Cupcakes' outstanding offering. In his book "South To Louisiana", John Broven describes it thus: If swamp-pop has a signature tune, an anthem, it has to be the quintessential "Mathilda". Recorded for George Khoury's Lyric label and leased to Judd (owned by Judd Phillips of Memphis), the single climbed to #47 in the Billboard chart in early 1959. Mathilda would surely have gone higher with a bigger company behind it. Cookie's crying vocal was stunning. Billboard was right when it noted that "the cat has a sound and he belts it as tho' from the swamps" The Cupcakes' instrumental backing - baying saxes, tripleting piano, and swirling guitar over a wallowing beat - was just as majestic, while the song itself was memorably melodic. Even today, everybody accepts that if a local band plays Mathilda and nobody dances, the musicians may just as well pack up and go home. Johnnie Allan speaks of Cookie's great influence on other performers and of how Mathilda was played on all the radio stations, Cajun, country and western, rock'n'roll and R&B. Written around 1956, but not recorded until 1958 after being turned down by Eddie Shuler and Don Robey among others, it's this hit version that closes the CD and should not be confused with the 1962 remake which is also included. Starting as the Boogie Ramblers and with Huey 'Cookie' Thierry only recently joined, the Cupcakes signed for Eddie Shuler's Goldband label in July 1952 but for some reason the single Cindy Lou /Such As Love, with original member Shelton Dunaway on vocals, was not released until 1955. That historic offering is presented here. Cookie became joint leader with Shelton, sharing vocals and both playing tenor sax. Other members were Sidney 'Hot Rod' Reynaud, tenor sax-.-Marshall LeDee, guitar-.-Ernest Jacobs, piano-.-Joe 'Blue' Landry, bass guitar-.-and Ivory Jackson, drums. Around 1963 Little Alfred (Babino) joined the band after his success with Walking Down The Aisle which was recorded with the Berry Cups who were modelled on the Cupcakes. A slew of emotional swamp-pop classics appeared between 1959 and 1964, including Until Then, I've Been So Lonely, Even Though, the lively I Cried and the wonderful Belinda. Cover versions also appeared, adapted to the inimitable Cupcakes' style but usually faithful to the original, such as the traditional Betty & Dupree-.-Got You On My Mind, the Big John Greer R.&B hit from 1952-.-Ivory Joe Hunter's I Almost Lost My Mind-.-Jiving Gene's Breaking Up Is Hard To Do-.-Shirley and Lee's Feel So Good-.-Pat Philips' Sea Of Love-.-Joe Turner's Honey Hush-.-Chuck Willis' Charged With Cheating-.-and the Platters' The Great Pretender featuring Carol Fran. All tracks have been remastered to achieve the best possible sound and this is apparent in comparison with the 1990 Japanese P-Vine CD, the only other release in that format that I am aware of which makes available some of the 30 tracks included here. Shane K Bernard's booklet notes also tell the story of Cookie's disappearance from South Louisiana in the mid-60s (he moved to Los Angeles)-.-of the rumours of his disabilities or even death-.-and of his rediscovery by Cupcakes' pianist Ernest Jacobs in 1992. Disabled he was, but able to walk with the aid of a stick which is how he performed magnificently at the 1995 Blues Estafette in Utrecht, backed by the revived nine-piece Cupcakes who included Shelton Dunaway, Ernest Jacobs, 'Hot Rod' Reynaud, Little Alfred and Marshall LeDee. It was a memorable gig and this is a memorable CD. (Ace Records)

| Dana Gillespie - I Rest My Case ana Gillespie must spend at least a quarter of her life on aeroplanes as she is endlessly touring and bringing her vibrant, thrilling and mostly self-penned blues all over the world with destinations ranging from Samarkand, Siberia and San Francisco. Her latest offering reveals an ultra-contemporary take on her view of the human condition, heavily featuring love, loss, isolation and ultimate acceptance. Dana is the cover artist on the current issue of Blues In Britain, in which she recounts how the “I Rest My Case” came together: “It was kind of a joy to do; it’s joyous music in a way. I don’t usually pour how I am feeling into a lyric, but having just broken up with someone, after 25 years, that started a few ideas. I would never have written about the falling to pieces of a relationship had it not happened. The album took two days to record but the secret to having it sound really great is having it mixed well. I always mix at Wolf Studios in Brixton where I do all my Indian stuff, all my Mustique stuff, all with ProTools. The engineer is Dominic Brett; he’s got such great ears that you really get separation; every instrument sounding marvellous.” As well as her extensive touring and recording activities, Dana is progressing with her memoirs and continues to organise the Mustique blues festival every year. | Dave Alvin - And The Guilty Women Grammy winner, Dave Alvin, has been roaming the highways of American music for over a quarter century. During those decades he's busted speakers with roots rock kick-starters, The Blasters, as well as mined the depths of country, folk and blues with his solo projects. A mainstay during much of this journey has been Alvin's electrifying band The Guilty Men. Following the recent death of Dave's best friend and Guilty Men accordionist Chris Gaffney in early 2008, Alvin decided to move in an exciting new musical direction. In October 2008 he stepped onto the stage of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival with an all-star, all-female group. Since dubbed The Guilty Women, the group consists of Americana scene vets Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris, Christy McWilson and Lisa Pankratz. Special guests include Marcia Ball and Susie Thompson. The self-titled debut from this unique assemblage of players, led by Alvin, is a spirited collection of thoughtful yet dynamic tunes featuring world-class musicianship worthy of his now legendary pedigree. |

Decoys - Shot From The Saddle Formed by veteran record producer Johnny Sandlin, the Decoys features Scott Bowyer, David Hood, Kelvin Holly and NC Thurman, who have worked with top artists that include Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard and Percy Sledge. This CD from Muscle Shoals' legendary Fame Records features powerhouse R&B from these top-notch players, plus guest spots from Spooner Oldham, Bobby Whitlock and Donnie Fritts. The sleevenote to the original US release of SHOT FROM THE SADDLE describes the Decoys as "a five man rhythm and blues powerhouse". That's only half the story, though. For what the Decoys really is, is a mini-history of Southern rock'n'soul, all wrapped up in a most satisfying 45 minutes of music. Originally assembled as a loose-fit 'jam band' a decade and a half ago by famed record producer Johnny "Duck" Sandlin, the group's personnel has lately gelled into a regular four piece (with a succession of guest drummers) that includes legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section bassist David Hood. (The MSRS drumstool occupant is one of many who occasionally occupy that self-same position within the Decoys' floating membership, by the way). Hood's been around enough to know what makes separates the good from the bad - as has lead singer Scott Boyer, whose own career stretches back to the mid 70s when he fronted Southern rockers Cowboy. Together with guitarist Kelvin Holly and keyboard man NC Thurman they make up the core of the Decoys, and are aided and augmented here by just the few other seminal Southern sidemen such as Spooner Oldham and ex-Domino Bobby Whitlock on B3s, percussionist Mickey Buckins and a team of background vocalists that includes 'Alabama Leaning Man' Donnie Fritts and Cindy Walker. Oh yes, and the Muscle Shoals Horns are conspicuous by their prominence here, too. Thus if you're guessing that SHOT FROM THE SADDLE is a beguiling blend of blues, country-influenced southern rock and straight-ahead Muscle Shoals Soul you'll be guessing right. The singing is soulful, the solos are brief and tasteful and the songs are generally pretty splendid (would you expect anything less from a set that revives Oscar Toney Jr's Down In Texas or Jimmy Hughes' Neighbor, Neighbor as well as Professor Longhair's Her Mind Is Gone, and blends them seamlessly with great Decoys originals like 24-7-365?). At a time when far too many veteran soul singers feel it's acceptable to record only with pre-programmed drum machines and crappy synth string sections, it's all the more refreshing to hear a 21st century southern soul record that features neither, as this doesn't. Enjoyed recent albums by the likes of Dan Penn and Russell Smith? You'll enjoy this, too, as it ploughs a not-dissimilar furrow to both Mr. Pennington's early 90s classic Do Right Man and Russell's recent Ace release The End Is Not In Sight (CDCHD 859 - like SFTS, originally released on Muscle Shoals Records). Produced by Mark and Rodney Hall with occasional input from the aforementioned Mr Sandlin, it's great to see and hear that Rick Hall's boys are continuing to maintain the standards of excellence set by their father over 40 years ago when he founded Florence, Alabama Music Enterprises (that's FAME to me and you!) and recorded Arthur Alexander's You Better Move On. If you have even a passing interest in the Sound of the American South, you need to check this one out. By Tony Rounce (Ace Records)

Dee Dee Sharp - It's Mashed Potato Time / Do The Bird Operating out of Philadelphia, Cameo-Parkway was among the most successful independent record companies of the early 1960s, turning out a veritable production line of teen-friendly singles by artists such as Chubby Checker, the Orlons, the Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp and Bobby Rydell. This month sees the release on Ace of the latest batch of collections from the vaults of Cameo and sister logo Parkway in the shape of twofers from Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells and self-appointed “Cool Ghoul” John Zacherle. Gospel-trained Dee Dee Sharp had three years experience in the record biz by the time she made her first showing on the charts singing anonymously alongside Chubby Checker on ‘Slow Twistin’’ in 1962, having paid her dues providing background vocals on records by artists such as Freddy Cannon, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Lloyd Price and Fabian. Her first solo single, released when she was just 16, zoomed up the Hot 100 too, as did a clutch of others over the next couple of years. When the Beatles came along, the hits dried up for Dee Dee, but she was soon snapped up by Atlantic Records, only to find herself in competition with Aretha Franklin. Sometimes life just ain’t fair. Here on this paring of her first two long-players, you get three of her biggest charters, some original tunes from the Cameo song factory plus knockout versions of other hits of the day. To hear her wail Ted Taylor’s ‘Be Ever Wonderful’ is a joy to behold. The booklet contains an essay by Ed Osborne featuring some fun quotes from Dee Dee herself. By Mick Patrick (ACE RECORDS)
