Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson - Bald Headed Blues
He had no hair, but blues fans don't care - Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson was revered as R&B royalty-on-record for nearly 45 years. His dual reputations as a first rank blues shouter (or should that perhaps be "blues squealer"!) and admired saxophonist remain intact nearly two decades after his passing, and this month it's Ace's pleasure to devote a whole CD to 26 of his most noteworthy recordings, from what is a (happily) extensive back catalogue.

BALD HEADED BLUES marks the first time that all 25 of Vinson's King masters have been collected together in the same CD package - legally or otherwise. Added echo or stereo reprocessing has marred all previous vinyl issues of the earliest King sides. However, Ace's attention to detail gives you the chance to hear them as they sounded on the original 78s (with the exception of Eddie's Bounce and the previously unissued Sittin On It All The Time, which have been lifted straight from the once-believed-lost session acetate). All post-1950 sessions come to you straight from the original tapes. You can believe me when I tell you that they have never sounded so good as they do here. "Cleanhead"'s reputation was already in place when he signed to King in 1948, thanks to his lengthy spell with jazz giant Cootie Williams' Orchestra and some stellar Mercury sides, under his own name, that marked him out as a budding blues superstar. Even so, there's no question that his six King sessions, over the next three years, added considerable weight to that reputation. Indeed, with hindsight they might well be the sessions that best represent his near-50 year career.

Their breadth of repertoire ranges from new explorations of his all-time classics Cherry Red and Kidney Stew - in Somebody Done Stole My Cherry Red and Rice And Peas respectively - to the bootin' R&B of Good Bread Alley. The near-be bop instrumentals Eddie's Bounce and Jump And Grunt (the latter a showcase for the keyboard wizardy, and accompanying snorts, of the great Milt Buckner) offer a compelling counterpoint to the ghettoisms of Home Boy, surely the first recording to use this Ebonic term, more than three decades before it became indelibly a part of hip hop jargon. And talking of counterpoints, can there be any two more apposite poles of rhythm & blues than Vinson's earnestly-crooned version of the MOR standard Time After Time and the lascivious double-entendre diatribe that is the original version of Sittin' On It, later cut with great success by Vinson's King label-mate Wynonie Harris? All this and more is here for you to savour, including the first version of another instant blues standard Person To Person, heard here in two quite different takes.

If this CD's not a "must have" for all R&B and blues fans, then I'd like to know what is. An all-encompassing Eddie Vinson King CD package has been a long time coming, but it's finally arrived and for that we should all be very grateful indeed. BALD HEADED BLUES is a first-rate documentation of the era when blues was evolving into R&B and, eventually, the music's upstart little brother rock'n'roll. Grab yourself a big bowlful of Rice And Peas and a bottle of Wineola, and take the Lonesome Train to Good Bread Alley 'cos it's time to Jump and Grunt with the King of Blues Squealing, Mr Eddie Vinson.

Eddie Holland - It Moves Me
Many artists have fallen into the music business almost by accident, but few as accidentally as the subject of our latest Motown collection: Eddie Holland, who attended an audition with a pal just to keep him company, and ended up the one with a recording contract. And many have had a single hit, and after a few unsuccessful years have given up their recording careers to take up a position in some other part of the business, but few with such spectacular results as Eddie, who together with his brother Brian and Lamont Dozier formed Holland-Dozier-Holland, one of the most successful songwriting teams of the 1960s.

Much has been written about Holland-Dozier-Holland’s songs and productions, but little about Eddie’s recording career, which spanned six years and resulted in 15 singles, one LP and a wealth of tracks hitherto unknown to the public. Our aim here is to present all of the records he cut from his 1958 debut through to 1964, when he withdrew from performing to concentrate on writing songs for the Supremes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Four Tops etc.

Following an extensive trawl of the Motown mastertapes in New York last summer, we’ve included everything we were able to find that Eddie recorded for Mercury, United Artists, Motown and the tiny Kudo label, where he appeared under his brother’s name on a commercial for a brand of wine. The set contains 56 tracks; including 30 new to CD, 18 of which have never been released in any form before.

The story of Eddie’s recording career is narrated in the bumper booklet by the man himself. Looking back, often with amazement and sometimes complete lack of recognition of some of the songs in this collection, he commented: “You know what is very clear to me? We were very, very fortunate to have a place where we could record that many pieces of product, and experiment that much, with somebody paying for it. That was like going to school, and somebody’s paying for your classes. That’s what Berry Gordy was doing. Can you imagine recording all those songs, learning your craft, and not even thinking about how much it was costing? I would say to you that Berry Gordy should be given an extraordinary amount of credit, because everybody was always criticising him. But you should pat him on the back and say, You know what? You made that possible.”

Watch this space for more Ace/Motown releases in the not too distant future.

Elvin Bishop - Raisin' Hell Revue
O ne of the benefits of playing music for as long as Elvin Bishop has is that you make a lot of musical friends, and when you play at the level Bishop does; a lot of your friends are really talented. Elvin Bishop has brought together some of his best buddies, who also happen to be world-class musicians, for his Raisin' Hell Revue.

Elvin Bishop's musical biography is no secret to anyone who has been into blues or rock music over the last forty years or so. Taken under the wing of renowned Chicago bluesman Little Smokey Smothers in the early '60s; explored new musical frontiers as a founding member of the original Paul Butterfield Blues Band during their groundbreaking years; fronted his own outfit by the late '60s on the rock ballroom and concert circuit; and scored a Top 10 radio hit in the '70s with "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" - Bishop has been a bona fide legend for decades. Along the way he's carved out a niche all his own, playing an appealing mix of rootsy rock & roll, R&B and barroom boogie, steeped in the heavy blues he learned from Little Smokey all those years ago.

So when a bunch of close friends, who also happen to be consummate musicians are sequestered together, as they were when they were at sea on the 2010 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, what else are they going to do but unite forces and create some truly exemplary music? Thankfully the tapes (or bytes) were rolling, and this wonderful musical experience was saved for posterity – and for Delta Groove Music. With the good vibes of a ship full of fellow music lovers to buoy the band, this is one of those performances where you really can hear that everyone was having a good time.

Over the course of their featured performance, Elvin shares the vocal mic with three hard-hitting vocal pros – blues veteran Finis Tasby, young turk John Németh, and Bishop's long-time bandmate and Bay Area legend, saxophonist Terry Hanck. They work their way through a strutting, soulful set of blues and R&B with the powerful grace of a veteran working outfit, perfectly highlighting the strengths of everyone involved. And it really is a "revue" in the classic sense of the term – various band members moving in and out of the spotlight for their featured numbers, a wide-ranging array of talents and styles represented, all presided over by the good-humored and congenial master of ceremonies Elvin Bishop. Along the way we're treated to swinging up-tempo R&B, low down blues, rootsy rock & roll, and a touch of gospel; even a fantastic reworking of his chart-topping radio smash hit "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" is included featuring the wonderfully gifted and dynamic vocalist John Németh – in other words, more of the music that has come to be known as "Elvin Bishop music".

Erja Lyytinen - Forbidden Fruit
‘Forbidden Fruit’ finds Finnish slide guitarist Erja Lyytinen taking the blues into the personal realm, to find new ways of expressing her feelings, understanding life experiences and realising her musical ambitions. From the deeply felt lyrics and well crafted songs, to the emotional input of her solos and expansive band harmonies, ‘Forbidden Fruit’ embodies the essence of everything we identify as the blues. Whether you could call it therapy, deeply held personal convictions, or more simply a celebration of life, this album has it all. And as Erja humorously remarks; ‘It was all made without an auto tuner (laughs), so everything is played and sang as you hear it’.

‘Forbidden Fruit’ is a multi layered album. Peel away a layer and you will find another rich seam of lyrical meaning and intricate guitar parts. The heart felt lyrics match the deep guitar tones and sonic textures, all glued together by Erja own natural vivacity.
Recorded at Helsinki’s Rescue Room Studios, the album’s sensual front cover photo was shot at Murder Mile studios in London by Finnish photographer Tina Korhonen. The all female crew added to an apparent statement of Erja’s self confidence. And there’s much to be proud of, as ‘Forbidden Fruit’ explores the full spectrum of life’s experiences; up, down and sideways. There’s a imperceptible meeting of old blues traditions - the art of story telling and sexual double entendres - with contemporary musical values and guitar solo’s that evoke lyrical meaning.
For every well crafted turn of phrase there’s an intricate guitar part to match, ranging from co-producer Davide Floreno’s tremolo guitar figure on ‘Joyful Misery’ to Erja’s guitar- led wall of sound on ‘Jealousy’. She further explores the full tonal possibilities of her new custom shop Fender Stratocaster on ‘Forbidden Fruit’, ‘Joyful Misery’ and the dual guitar fest that is ‘Change Of Season’, while the radical arrangement and unusual chords on ‘Death Letter’ re-invigorate the blues standard and help integrate it into the albums sequential flow.
Co-song writer Alan Darby (who has worked with Bonnie Raitt and Bonnie Tyler) provides the American feel on two relationship songs, the self explanatory ‘At Least We Still Fight’ and the deeply personal ‘Joyful Misery’. The latter is inspired by a 50 year relationship between her uncle and aunt. The lyrics of the title tracks pull no punches - ‘A flower in blossom attracts all kind of bees’ - as Erja achieves her goal of ‘sounding honest, beautiful and sad at the same time’, before she belatedly offers us a cathartic release with Lil Johnson’s ‘Press My Button’.
‘Forbidden Fruit’ is an album of real substance, emotion, superb band interplay and Erja’s very best vocals. The blues never sounded more essential.

Erja Lyytinen - Voracious Love
'Voracious Love' is Finnish slide guitarist Erja Lyytinen most personal album, as she presents 13 love songs (including a cover and a couple of co-writes) in the rock /blues format. Co-produced by guitarist/keyboard player Davide Floreno, she cleverly traces the hopes and disappointments of her protagonists via moments of deep blues and virtuoso playing that conjures up an array of colourful tones and riffs. For this is a blues guitar album that will satisfy fans on a number of different levels ranging from the heartfelt meaning of the songs to Erja trademark sizzling solos which help colour the lyrics and embrace real feel and clarity of expression. 'Voracious Love' is a passionate album by an artist who never content who to rest in her comfort zone. As Erja explains, 'These stories are songs about situations where if we haven't been in those situations ourselves, then we certainly known someone else who has'. 'Voracious Love' subtly shifts the focus from Erja's intense solos to the core of the songs. Together with an excellent band and special guests Marco Hietala (Nightwish on vocals) and cellist Paavo Lotjonen (Apocalyptica) there are many highlights on an excellent contemporary blues album.
