| VA: - Floyd's Early Cajun Singles Swallow Records, still run by the personable Floyd Soileau and based in Ville Platte, Louisiana, is the most important and prolific Cajun record label of all. In the 1980s, Ace Records was the first UK label to delve deeply into the Swallow Records catalogue and so bring Cajun music to the masses. With Floyd's Early Cajun Singles we go to the very beginning of Floyd Soileau's career as a record man. Starting out as a teenage disc jockey with Radio KVPI, Ville Platte, he began selling records as a sideline in 1956 before founding the famous Floyd's Record Shop. Realizing there was a dearth of Cajun product, Floyd released in late 1957 a single on 78 and 45 on Big Mamou Records by accordionist Milton Molitor with Austin Pitre on fiddle. Then Soileau started the Vee-Pee label (named after the initials of his home town) with accordion stars Lawrence Walker and Aldus Roger. In 1958 Floyd formed the Jin and Swallow labels with no clear musical divisions. After scoring big regional hits by Rod Bernard and Jivin' Gene on Jin, Floyd earmarked Jin exclusively for his popular singles, with Swallow being strictly Cajun music. In this late 1950s period, Cajun artists were absorbing the 'honky tonk' country influence, with the fiddle and steel guitar prominent alongside the imperious accordion. The music here is of joyous two-steps and poignant waltzes in an age when the local dance hall was still the fulcrum of Cajun society. Our CD booklet features colourful reminiscences from Floyd Soileau and rare photographs from the Johnnie Allan collection. Needless to say, the original 45s and 78s are gold-plated, impossible-to-find collectors' items. But this is not just a CD release for record collectors and music historians, it should also appeal to lovers of any downhome music and the throng of Cajun dancers. Most of all, it is a terrific tribute to Floyd Soileau who helped to preserve this music at a time when few others cared. Another first for Ace! By John Broven (Ace Records) |

| VA: - Harp Blues It's hard to think of another musical instrument that is so closely associated with the blues as the humble harmonica or "harp". Since the 1920s - one hundred years after its invention - blues musicians have taken advantage of its low cost, volume and portability and have made some of the most influential of 20th century music. In the hands of early masters like DeFord Bailey and Jaybird Coleman the harp rose above its earlier status of a simple novelty instrument, while Jazz Gillum and John Lee "Sonny Boy #1" Williamson helped to define the sound of post-war blues bands. From the early 1950s, the harmonica became a key component of the blues almost entirely due to the recordings of the musicians on this compilation. A quick glance at the track listing reveals that just about every post-war harmonica player of note is here together with some rather more (undeservedly) obscure names. (No Sonny Terry, you say? Well, he's blowing on Cousin Leroy's Up The River). Legendary figures rub shoulders with rather less familiar names. To the initiated, however, Eddie Hope's A Fool No More, Papa Lightfoot's Wine, Women And Whiskey and Little Willy Foster's Little Girl are long-time classics. Legendary Sun recordings like Jimmy (de Berry) & Walter (Horton)'s Easy and Dr Ross' Chicago Breakdown are interspersed with masterpieces from the Chess studios by Little Walter (Juke) and Jimmy Rogers (If It Ain't Me) and Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Champion Jack Dupree, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley and Eddie Taylor are among the accompanists. Recorded between 1947 and 1968, this collection includes several of the greatest examples of harp blues ever recorded and with several tracks appearing on CD for the first time, it's bound to be a popular blues release on Ace. | VA: - Red River Blues The Ram Series continues with a fine collection of blues and R&B recordings, highlighted by the complete sessions of the late Jeff (Sonny Boy) Williamson - the only known recording of this Louisiana harp player. The tiny Shreveport Ram label was the brainchild of the late Myra Smith who, in the mid-50s, recorded country rockabilly and blues at her tiny handbuilt studio. Myra was also a brilliant guitarist who played old-time Carlton family-style guitar and loved downhome blues. On many of her sessions she would turn the tape machine on and then step out into the studio and play on the sessions. Strapped for money, she was not able to release all her masters on singles and in the 60s she gave up the Ram label to concentrate on publishing and songwriting with her partner, Margaret Lewis. The pair set up operation in Nashville making demos, including the big hit Reconsider Me for Shelby Singleton. This latest volume of the Ram story, Red River Blues, concentrates on the blues and R&B sessions that she produced in the late 50s and early 60s with artists such as Jeff (Sonny Boy) Williamson, TV Slim, Elgie Brown and Vincent Williams. These masters were the fruits of my research at Shreveport several years ago. They add to our knowledge of Shreveport blues, whose history goes back to the early days of blues recording, when the city produced such greats as Leadbelly, the Shreveport Homewreckers and Black Ivory King. Forthcoming CDs in this series will deal with rockabilly and hillbilly, and the rocking girls at Ram who performed at the world famous Louisiana Hay Ride which broadcast out of Shreveport. Through the 50s the Hay Ride helped to establish the careers of Hank Williams, Elvis Presley and Johnny Horton. The Myra Smith Ram legacy rolls on and her part in the indie story is assured. | Etta James - Hickory Dickory Dock The title track of this Etta James album, HICKORY DICKORY DOCK, is currently playing alongside the images of British Telecom's latest TV advert. Etta needs no introduction - she is one of America's finest voices-.-a household name and one of a few classic R&B/rock'n'roll female vocalists with a powerful, confident singing style, renowned for its perfect sense of timing. This mid-price CD contains her early recordings and draws attention to the roots of her musical influences. Etta James grew up in 40s and 50s west coast America-.-at a time when a sudden influx of immigrants looking for work at shipyards encouraged a rapid growth in the local entertainment industry, with a thriving music hub in Los Angeles. From an early age she was exposed to early, wild and gritty music which became rhythm & blues. By the age of 15, Etta had formed a vocal trio with two friends and a chance performance caught by Johnny Otis, initiated her journey to success. Otis took the girls into Modern Records' studios to record Roll With Me Henry. Richard Berry was brought in mid-way through the session to re-arrange the song. The result was the retitled The Wallflower, a James-Berry duet, which subsequently scored a #2 position in the R&B charts. It was covered by Georgia Gibbs for the pop charts (the pop version was toned-down and entitled Dance With Me Henry). The song led Etta to touring with a host of R&R stars who included Little Richard, Nappy Brown and Bill Doggett. She returned to the studio to record a raunchy follow-up, Hey Henry, and her second hit, Good Rockin' Daddy (which peaked at #12 in the R&B chart). In early 1956, the Bihari brothers brought Etta and Jimmy Beasley (Modern's answer to Fats Domino) together in a session in New Orleans. They wanted to mastermind a collaboration which would compete against Little Richard, rival label Specialty's hottest R&R act. The outstanding track was Tough Lover, featuring a blistering tenor solo from Lee Allen, reminiscent of his performance on Long Tall Sally. Most of the sides contained here were recorded in New Orleans or Los Angeles during the late 50s, providing her entire Modern recordings. After her stint at Modern, Etta moved to the Chess labels, recording several polished, emotion-drenched ballads. She continued to be successful in the R&B charts well into the late 70s and is still active on the live performance circuit. In 1993, Etta James was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame taking her rightful place in R&R history. |
