Big Heat - Boogiemen
The Big Heat are eight-piece Rhythm & Blues outfit who have rapidly become one of the UK's mightiest music machines. The pump out Jumpin', Swingin', Red Hot & Rockin' Jump Blues - their style taken from late 1940s & '50s - the prime time of Rhythm & Blues.
The Big Heat's foundation stone is the solid rhythm section of driving boogie piano, double bass and drums. Then the tough sounding Blues guitar explodes, complimented by a honkin' horn section of tenor & baritone saxes topped with a wailing trumpet. Powerhouse vocals provided by John 'Widemouth' Wilson complete the lineup.
Prepare for a fabulous musical journey from New York to New Orleans, from East to West across the golden age of music. The Big Heat have one of the classiest repertoires in the business mixing superb original material with as a barrel-load of powerhouse rhythms of great Blues artists such as Amos Milburn, T-Bone Walker, Freddy King, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Big Joe Turner and Wynonie Harris.
Grab the CD, and then catch The Big Heat on stage as they travel far and wide around the land, performing at festivals and music venues, which to date have included such high-profile events as Birmingham Jazz Festival, The Jiving Jamboree, The Rhythm Review, Edinburgh Jump Weekender, Bures Jazz & Blues Festival, Sheffield Blues & Jazz Festival, The Swing Cats Ball, Burnley Blues Festival, Vegas Scotland and many others.

Big Joe Turner - Rocks
1-CD DigiPac (4-plated) with comprehensive booklet, 28 tracks, playing time: 70:35. -- Contains 'Roll 'Em Pete' with Pete Johnson, a record that propelled bobby-soxers into a boogie-woogie frenzy. 'Shake, Rattle And Roll' helped jump-start the rock 'n' roll revolution. It's here along with a truck-load of R&B hits including 'Honey Hush', 'Flip, Flop And Fly', 'Hide And Seek', 'Corrine Corrina', 'Lipstick, Powder And Paint' and many more. These immortal rock-till-it-hurts classics inspired an uncountable number of rockabilly covers from Elvis Presley to Jerry Lee Lewis to Shakin' Stevens. 'The quintessential American singer' said Doc Pomus. 'Rock 'n' roll would never have happened without him'. -- Big Joe Turner first shouted timeless blues couplets in the Kansas City of the '30s, partnering stomping pianist, Pete Johnson, for almost two decades. Together they ignited the boogie-woogie craze that led to the post-war emergence of R&B and ultimately, the revolution that was rock 'n' roll. This set, compiled by Trevor Cajiao, Editor of 'Now Dig This,' embraces all phases of Joe's career but concentrates, inevitably, on the hard-rocking records which made Joe a rock 'n' roll star and unlikely teen idol at the age of 43. Discs like 'Honey Hush', 'Shake, Rattle And Roll' (bowdlerised by Bill Haley), 'Flip, Flop And Fly', 'Boogie Woogie Country Girl', 'Teen Age Letter' and 'Lipstick, Powder And Paint' were among the most exciting records of the '50s and led to literally hundreds of covers by legions of rockabilly singers. -- Jump blues veteran turned rock 'n' roll patriarch, Big Joe Turner out-rocked them all!

Big John Greer - I'm The Fat Man
Big John Greer…what a man! Starting off as a key member of Lucky Millinder's legendary band, the Big Man was soon blowing hot sax on a succession of salty, saucy, sexy hits, as rockin' as they were risqué. As well as playing with Millinder, Bullmoose Jackson and others of the most out-there aggregations of the time - Big John was really the daddy of them all: just listen and you will hear!

This is a must for all fans of rockin' sax honkin' risque R&B. The success of our series of these on radio, with such knowledgeable and tasteful DJs as Mark Lamarr, I think speaks eloquently for itself…

Big Town Playboys - Hip Joint
The best revival R&B band in Britain are back on disc after a six-year break from recording. Hailing orginally from the West Midlands, the Big Town Playboys is fronted by the great pianist and vocalist Mike Sanchez and underpinned by the bass of long-time cohort Ian Jennings. In the band's early days ex-Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack bassist Andy Sylvester and leader Ricky Cool were also involved. Now ex-Amen Corner singer Andy Fairweather-Low has joined the group on guitar and vocals bringing his formidable talents to the outfit. The Playboys' appearance at the 1996 Eric Clapton shows is the third time as Eric's special guests but the band's history is interwoven with great names - many who have invited them to put their unique skills on record (Eric Clapton on his Colour Of Money score, Jeff Beck on the Crazy Legs CD and Anne Dudley on her Pope Must Die soundtrack, for instance). Add to that regular support for such visiting American greats as Little Willie Littlefield, Jimmy Nelson and Champion Jack Dupree, and you have one of the most sharp, most jumping R&B bands this side of the Atlantic.

Big Town Playboys - Now Appearing
The CD album of the best live R&B band on the club scene. They opened for Eric Clapton on his three blues nights during one of his mammoth 18 show stints at the Albert Hall. Not only did they go down well with the punters at this event, but blues guitar star Robert Cray was so impressed that he invited them to play his wedding the following week. Robert Plant also used the boys as a backing band for a TV special and they were the regular backing band for Little Willie Littlefield on his visits to the UK. Singer, pianist and all round smoothest dude in town, Mike Sanchez leads the other 4 Playboys through a dozen stomping R&B originals and covers, including Roy Montrell's "That Mellow Saxophone", Willie Eagan's "What A Shame" and the McCracklin classic,"The Wobble". So throw away your prejudices about whether or not rhythm and blues men can play the whites and flip your wig to the uptown sound of the Big Town Playboys. If it's good enough for the likes of Willie Littlefield and Robert Cray, then be assured, it's good enough for you

Billy "Red" Love - Gee... I Wish - The Sun Years Plus
1-CD Digipak (4-plated) with 48-page booklet, 26 tracks. Playing time approx. 73 minutes. -- A landmark first CD reissue of one of the best... but least known... R&B singer-pianists from Memphis! Twenty six high class boogie, blues and R&B sides recorded between 1951 and 1954 by Sam Phillips at Sun Records! Includes all 4 Billy 'Red' Love sides recorded by Sun and issued by Chess Records in 1951 and '52 including the extremely rare, never before reissued - 'My Teddy Bear Baby/Poor Man' ! Few collectors have even SEEN this record! Includes Love's classic recording of 'Juiced', issued under the name of Jackie Brenston as the follow up to 'Rocket 88', plus both sides of the Sun single that never was - 'Hey Now/Way After Midnight'. Includes the rare promotional disc for Hart's Bakery in Memphis - 'Hart's Bread Boogie' ! 10 tracks not originally issued in the 1950s and 10 more tracks issued here for the first time! Features the cream of Memphis R&B musicians. The booklet by Martin Hawkins contains the first ever biography of Love's unusual career and amazing life. Rare photographs including the first ever solo shot of Billy Love! -- Bear Family has carved out an amazing niche: issuing CDs by Sun Records artists who didn't record enough for Sun to fill a CD. Bear Family looks high and low for other recordings, rarities, and test pressings... all the stuff collectors love! This time, it's Billy Love, and his story fills a void in the story of Memphis music. Love was Sun's R&B session pianist and led Rosco Gordon's road band for some years. In and out of the forces, in and out of employment, in and out of jazz clubs, and in and out of the attention of law enforcement officers, Billy Love led a full, short, frustrating and strange life. But in his singing, songwriting, arranging and piano playing he was up there with the best. This CD tells it all!

Billy Lee Riley - The Mojo Albums, plus
(1-CD DigiPac, four panel, with 32-Page booklet, 29 tracks. Playing time: 87:59). --Both of Riley's rare and sought-after Mojo albums available now for the first time in 30 years. - The'Vintage' rock 'n' roll album features rockabilly legend Larry Donn whose red-hot rockin' piano helps Riley rip through ten rock 'n' roll classics in half an hour. Way to go! 'Southern Soul At The Brave-Falcon' serves up another 12 hypnotic tracks in a visceral, bluesy set of shuffling, rocking rhythms. You can practically smell the magnolia. Also included are the rare Mojo single as by Skip Wiley and a clutch of unissued tracks including a longer version of the Chuck Berry Medley. -- The late Billy Lee Riley was one of the titanic but unsung pioneers of rock 'n' roll. He was better looking than Carl Perkins, his multi-instrumental ability surpassed Elvis's, his confidence equalled Jerry Lee Lewis's. And he was important to Sun Records in ways other were not. Riley's musicians, co-opted as studio session-men, plotted the course of rock 'n 'roll as much as many a more celebrated band. - Like the household names, Riley had a life after Sun and this 29-track CD contains two diverse but equally versatile albums made some 14 years apart. 'Vintage', from 1980, is a solid, renascent set of immortal rock 'n 'roll classics inspired by the renewed European interesting rockabilly and Sun Records. Then there's 'Southern Soul At The Brave-Falcon' which features R&B standards, Top 40 tunes and Riley's own songs in a live nightclub recording which captures the best sounds of the era. It's sexy, blues 'n' boogie based soulful music and when Riley hollers 'Do the Temptation Walk' it's the mid-60s all over again. - As Bear Family always goes that extra, obsessional mile, we've included a longer undubbed version of the Chuck Berry Medley, several other previously unissued performances and a rare Mojo single issued under de pseudonym of Skip Wiley.
