VA: - Toast Of The Coast 1950s R&B From Dolphin's Of Hollywood Vol 1950s R&B From Dolphin's Of Hollywood Vol. 2 ! We’re often asked why we don’t put out as many R&B compilations as we used to. In part, our extensive release schedule in the past has meant that, while the well is still by no means dry, it’s not as full as it used to be. Additionally, demand has dwindled a little, as its audience gets older and less interested in ownership of CDs. Also, the relentless onslaught of lesser quality “out of copyright” issues has eaten away at the core market for R&B and given a false perspective on the true worth of material that’s being, for want of a better term, legally bootlegged. We still love R&B, and we will continue to support it as long as people keep calling for it. This month, we’re delighted to bring you another volume in our series of CDs devoted to the labels of the late John Grattan Dolphin. Our previous Dolphin compilation highlighted repertoire that Lovin’ John had recorded for release on his first label, Recorded In Hollywood. This time, the repertoire is largely drawn from the stack of tapes that Dolphin produced or bought with the intention of issuing them on his later labels, Money and Cash. With one exception, all tracks come from original mastertapes that Ace acquired from Dolphin’s widow, Ruth, some years ago. Dolphin’s scattergun approach to running his labels meant that he would be recording and releasing high profile acts like Memphis Slim, Pee Wee Crayton, Joe Houston and Jimmy Witherspoon one day, and extremely obscure ones like Vernon Anders and Al Calloway the next. For every two sides that he issued, he left two in the can. Indeed, some singers heard here, such as Ervin “Big Boy” Groves’ protégée Little Margie, recorded many sides over several sessions without so much as one finding its way onto the market. He may not have released everything he cut, but Dolphin held onto the majority of his reels of tape. Because of this, Ace can bring you another helping of quality R&B, in the direct-from-the-studio-floor quality. (There’s plenty more where this comes from. Even as you’re reading these words, another volume is being planned for release in early 2010). As we are wont to do on these occasions, we’ve enlisted the help of top notch west coast researcher-annotator Jim Dawson to tell the story behind the songs and artists - and as ever, Jim’s left no stone unturned in his quest to uncover new facts about the most terminally obscure names on this set. Half a century may have passed since John Dolphin really was the Toast Of the Coast, but his musical legacy has outlived him. Thanks to our being able to bring you compilations such as this one, it will continue to do so for many years to come. By Tony Rounce (Ace Records)

VA: - Too Late To Be Good - Vocal Harmony Vanguard 1937-52 Vocal group harmony enjoyed its golden years from the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s when groups such as The Platters, The Drifters and The 4 Seasons regularly topped the national Billboard Pop and R&B Charts, but the tradition goes back much further than that, right back to the dawn of recorded sound and beyond in fact. This CD, however, concentrates on the post-war rise of the vocal ensemble in a variety of different settings - quartets, quintets, ensemble jive and jazz groups, acapella harmony units and big band vocal groups - but all architects of the modern style that would come to be known, for better or worse, as Doo Wop.

VA: - You Heard It Here First! Vol. 2 As a concept it’s a revelation – the original versions of (mostly) familiar songs that went on to become big hits by other artists. Familiarity is turned on its head as mental receptors attuned to the better-known hit versions – the received wisdom, if you like – are challenged for attention by the performers who made the original recordings to little or no acclaim. It’s a parallel universe where the reassuringly familiar landscape is a beautiful illusion. Volume 1 of “You Heard It Here First” was among our best sellers of last year and we believe that this sequel is an even stronger package. Here again are pop hits as the soundtrack to our lives – but not as we know them. Many of these original versions are exceedingly rare in vinyl form, notably Dan Penn’s self-penned original version of ‘I’m Your Puppet’ (on which Penn actually sings the line ‘I’m The Puppet’, in contrast to all the versions which followed) and the Corporation’s barnstorming ‘Candida’, subsequently a US #3 for Tony Orlando’s Dawn, though one wonders why the Corporation’s torrid original failed to make the same impact. Tony Joe White’s ‘Polk Salad Annie’, a top 10 hit on the Monument label in 1969, laid down the template for the so-called swamp rock sound and was later popularised by Elvis who had a UK hit with the song in 1973. But for all his seeming self-assurance, White had struggled to make the song work , having cut it for Monument as ‘Old Man Willis’ a year earlier before re-recording it with a fresh set of lyrics as ‘Polk Salad Annie’. Here’s how it sounded before the re-write – a truly intriguing juxtaposition. Most of Brian Hyland’s hits were written for him so it comes as a surprise to learn that his signature tune, ‘Sealed With A Kiss’, had first been recorded some two years earlier by the Four Voices, a clean-cut vocal group. That is the version which displays the apparent debt the song owed to ‘The Green Leaves of Summer’, a big hit of the day. Transmogrified by successive generations of folk and pop artists into ‘Wimoweh’ ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’, Solomon Linda’s African tribal chant, ‘Mbube’, must be one of the most misappropriated tunes in post-war pop music, though in recent years Linda began to receive the acknowledgement for his memorable if inadvertent contribution to the pop canon and we are proud to present it here. Sixties wheeler-dealer Simon Napier-Bell and TV maven Vicki Wickham took it upon themselves to pen English lyrics to a contemporary Italian hit, ’Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te)’ in the back of a cab on their way to an evening meal at a restaurant in London’s West End in early 1966 – or so the redoubtable Napier-Bell has claimed in various autobiographies. Those twenty or so usefully occupied minutes produced ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’, under which title the song has provided something of a lifelong annuity for the pair. Pino Donaggio’s gorgeous Italian original of this classic power ballad is among the highlights of the set. ‘Sorrow’ was knocked out without much conscious effort as a filler for the McCoys’ first album in the wake of their 1965 mega-hit ‘Hang On Sloopy’. Maybe the producers (who also happened to write the song) missed a trick by consigning ‘Sorrow’ to makeweight status, but no matter as Brit duo the Sorrows took the song into the UK Top 10 a few months later. That was the version that inspired David Bowie’s recording but it’s the McCoys’ stripped-down original which probably packs the mightiest charm of all. The songs, compellingly sequenced, are all hits, the technicolour packaging incorporating all the prerequisite fax’n’info, gives off a warm comforting glow, and the entire concept constitutes a little bit of pop history in the making. What’s not to like? By Rob Finnis (Ace Records)

Walter Horton - Mouth Harp Maestro A straight lift on to CD for a previous vinyl only compilation, once again from the Modern vaults. This was always a very good seller at Ace, and now the sound has been cleaned up further. Norton issued two singles through Modern, the second of which appeared on their RPM subsidiary. The RPM sides "Jumpin' Blues/Black Gal" are presented here as issued, as is "Little Boy Blues", from one side of the debut outing, but "Now Tell Me Baby" appears as an alternate version. Horton cut a total of 13 sides for Modern at Sam Phillips studio in Memphis, all of which are presented here. A cut from Jim Lockhart, recorded about the same time at Phillip studio is added as are two sides from the little known Alfred 'Blue King' Harris. These were probably recorded on an early 50s field trip to the south and fit musically with the rest of the selections.

Wynonie Harris - Rock, Mr Blues ! The King & Atco Recordings 1949-1956 Let us now move on to the 1950s, or should that be back? In any case, here we have Mr. Wynonie Harris with 'Rock Mr. Blues' in his day a superstar of LA's Central Avenue, playing for a sophisticated adult audience and making hit after hit. A bit of a wild-man by all accounts, few records made a stronger seismic impact than Harris' 1948 chart-topper 'Good Rockin' Tonight'. With a rocking, socking backbeat, the record provided an easily followed blueprint for the imminent rise of rock & roll. It also gave Elvis Presley something to place on the A side of his second Sun single provided the blueprint for his music, and meant he would cover his songs faithfully throughout his legendary career. Harris was a dynamic, hit-making performer with a great voice who made good money purveying blatantly adult songs to adult night club patrons the length and breadth of the USA. Here at Cherry Red we shall certainly be listening to this quite a bit!
