Includes rare photos and unissued recordings! -- The first ever CD of Bobby Lord's vintage recordings is way overdue! Now Bear Family has carefully selected his finest proto-rockabilly, upbeat country and pop recordings for Columbia from 1954-1960. The collection also features three previously unissued numbers from 1956 and '60, plus the complete January, 1956 session (two days after Elvis recorded 'Heartbreak Hotel') that produced 'Beautiful Baby' and Lord's blazing cover of Johnny Cash's hit 'So Doggone Lonesome'. Elvis's bassist and drummer stayed around to work the session. Also featured is the original recording of 'Boudleaux Bryant's Hawk-Eye', later a chart single for Frankie Laine! The star sidemen include Chet Atkins, Hank Garland, Harold Bradley, Grady Martin, and two of Hank Williams's Drifting Cowboys. -- By the 1970s, Lord had scaled back his musical career to become a successful Florida developer and businessman. He also hosted the Nashville Network's 'Country Sportsman' (later renamed 'Celebrity Outdoors') from 1983-1989. Bobby Lord's death in 2008 at age 74 closed a career that spanned music, TV and business. |

| Bonnie Dobson - Vive La Canadienne (1-CD DigiPac - four panel - with booklet, 24 tracks. Playing time: 81:50) -- A long-overdue reissue of the rare folk recordings of Canadian singer Bonnie Dobson. Her 1961 composition 'Morning Dew' continues to draw attention and praise. Her 1960s recordings such as 'Live At Folk City ' reflect the American folk music boom at the height of its creativity and popularity. Her 1964 and 1972 folk albums are combined here, with previously unissued recordings. -- Bonnie Dobson is best known as the composer of 'Morning Dew'. Written in 1961, 'Morning Dew' was subsequently recorded by artists including The Grateful Dead, Clannad, Nazareth, Tim Rose, Lulu, Jeff Beck and Robert Plant. -- Always a well-respected figure within the folk scene, Dobson was born in Toronto, Canada in 1940. 'I was nurtured on the music of Paul Robeson. I have a memory of standing next to the record player and singing along to 'I Still Suits Me'. I guess I must have been about four years old at the time.' -- When she was barely 20 Dobson went from singing at school assemblies to sharing a stage with Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee at a major US folk festival. Although she lacked professional experience, the pristine quality of her voice attracted promoters and producers to her. Her earliest albums, including a live performance at Gerdes Folk City in New York's Greenwich Village, continue to draw praise. -- Her final American albums drew Dobson away from the pure folk tradition in the direction of popular music. She recalls, 'The last recordings I made were my RCA albums in 1968/69, both of which were heavily orchestrated.' Despite the change in production style, what strikes listeners most about Dobson is the stellar quality of her voice. Producer Bobby Scott writes, 'It has always seemed to this writer that music is the language of this thing we call love. And nothing can compare with the voice of love speaking through a beautifully pure instrument. The voice of Bonnie Dobson is such an instrument. Her gifts are remarkably natural. There is in this Canadian girl's voice an innate enchantment. For some singers the voice must be a developed mechanism. Not so with Miss Dobson. Her voice........can only be called a gift.' -- Bonnie Dobson moved to London, England in 1969 and gave up writing and performing shortly afterwards. She began her second career at the University of London, working and studying in the fields of politics, philosophy and history. -- It's been too long since the name Bonnie Dobson has graced a CD release. To folk fans, her name is familiar and her talent is well respected. If this is your first encounter with her you are in for a rare experience. As producer Bobby Scott concludes, 'Bonnie Dobson is an artist. Not just a singer but a bit of Autumn wind and Summer rain and she is as natural. I am sure that Love has had no sweeter or warmer champion than Bonnie Dobson'. |

| Brenda Lee - Queen Of Rock'n'Roll Here are the tougher rock’n’roll recordings Brenda Lee made at the start of her career before she fully embraced the smooth certainties of the pop market. Comprising early singles and a few choice LP tracks, it is a stand-alone release designed to wrap up all her early rockers and serve as a companion volume to Ace’s existing programme of Brenda Lee album reissues. Even at the height of her ballad phase, Brenda demonstrated that she had never entirely left her rock roots behind by placing rockers on the on the B-sides of her singles. These up-tempo offerings frequently became hits too – tunes such ‘Just A Little’, ‘Anybody But Me’ and ‘That’s All You Gotta Do’, all heard here, are typical examples. Also included is her breakthrough hit, ‘Sweet Nothin’s’ , the perennial ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’, the all-time classic, ‘Let’s Jump The Broomstick’ and early boppers such as ‘Dynamite (the 1957 version not the later re-cut), ‘Rock The Bop’ and Jambalaya’ which display a feisty attack for one so young – she was a mere 13 years-old at the time. Some of Lee’s biggest American ballads were less successful in Britain where she was better known for her up-tempo material. In 1961, Brunswick, the label representing US Decca in the UK decided to re-promote an earlier release, ‘Let’s Jump The Broomstick’, in response to an underlying demand. The revived 45 reached #12 helping to keep Brenda’s name in the limelight here. Similarly, ‘Here Comes That Feeling’ (relegated to a B-side in the States) reached the Top 10 in Britain while barely making a ripple back home. By the time the British Invasion had swept the States in 1964, Brenda’s recording profile had strayed just a little too far into AOR territory and she was keen to reassert her pre-eminence in the fast-changing teen market. British promoter Don Arden put her in touch with hotshot young British producer Mickie Most who’d taken the Animals to the top with ‘House Of The Rising Sun’. It was the first time she’d recorded outside Nashville since 1957. The result was the scorching double-sider, ‘Is It True’ c/w ‘What’d I Say’ featuring Jimmy Page and powerhouse drummer Bobby Graham. In the States, ‘Is It True’ came out with a different flip, ‘Just Behind The Rainbow’, so American fans never got to hear ‘What’d I Say’. Cut in a single take, ‘What’d I Say’ appears here on CD for the first time and makes a tremendous closer to this engaging set by the Queen of Rock’n’Roll’, complemented, as always, by an attractive booklet brimming with rare ads and period pics.
