Charline Arthur - Burn That Candle
180-gram vinyl. DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) Disc Cutting: Günter Pauler at Pauler Acoustics, Northeim, Germany; mastered by Bob Jones, pressed by Pallas, Diepholz. -- Charlene Arthur, the country music rebel! - In the mid-Fifties, women country singers took their cue from Kitty Wells. Then came Charline Arthur who burst forth from a rowdier universe, a place where the boogie was woogied, diamonds were flashed, and men were picked up and cast off. She was one of the few women who could hold her own on-stage with Elvis and the rockabillies. Her unpredictable temperament earned her a somewhat controversial image within the industry, which in turn matched her brassy, larger-than-life vocal style. She and Elvis toured Texas together in 1955, and by the time her RCA contract expired in 1956, Charline was at odds with the music business in general. In 1965, she relocated to the west coast, and then, in 1978, retired to rural Idaho to live in a trailer. Charline Arthur died in her sleep on November 27, 1987.

Johnny Cash - Bootleg Vol. 2 - From Memphis To Hollywood 3LP
3LP Set incl 24 page full colour booklet. 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

Much like the critically-acclaimed PERSONAL FILE (Bootleg Vol. 1), Bootleg Vol. II: From Memphis to Hollywood features home recordings from Johnny Cash's own archives in Hendersonville, Tennessee. This time we get rare and unreleased home recordings from his earliest foray on local radio to recording demos of recently written songs like "I Walk the Line". But that's only half the story.

Side One, Two and Three focus primarily on Cash's formative years performing and recording in Memphis- from 1955 when he began appearing as a trio with his group the Tennessee Two, through his years recording fro Sun Records, up to his signing with Columbia Records in 1958. Side Four, Five and Six are culled from the vaults of Columbia Records and includes various singles, outtakes and B-sides recorded between 1958-1969.

Bootleg Vol. II: From Memphis To Hollywood is both historic a must-have for any fan of American music - and a first-rate exercise in story-telling, a doorway into Johnny Cash' popular legasy as effective and captivating as any greatest hits compilation.

Johnny Cash - The Fabulous Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash's first album on Columbia is also regarded as his best from his late fifties period. After he was released from his Sun Records contract, Cash unleashed his best material for The Fabulous Johnny Cash (1958). Maintaining his stripped-down, bare bones Country Blues style the album is simply all killer, no filler Classic Cash. Great songs like "Frankie's Man, Johnny", "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" and "I Still Miss Someone" proved to be staples in Cash's extensive body of work. Finally available on 180 gram vinyl!

Johnny Cash - Unseen Johnny Cash
1-LP (one-sided, Cash portrait engraved on reverse side, 180-gram pressing) with a 16-page hardcover book. -- Think you've seen it all by Johnny Cash Think you've heard it all by Johnny Cash Think again! An innovative artist like Johnny Cash deserves an innovative package. Here, striking unpublished images from early in Cash's career are packaged with a one-sided LP of Cash on-stage in 1957 and 1959. The flipside of this limited edition LP features a portrait of Johnny Cash, engraved into the LP's audiophile-grade 180 gram vinyl. Packed in a 16-page hardcover book. A true collector's item! Unseen photos, rarely heard audio! Released to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Johnny Cash's birth! -- In 1955, at the dawn of his long career, Sun Records president Sam Phillips sent Johnny Cash to a nearby photographer, William Speer. Cash was fortunate because Speer was an innovative craftsman, influenced by vintage Hollywood photographers who used light in a dramatic new way. Speer shot photo sessions with Cash, between 1955 and 1958. A couple of images were published in the 1950s, but the rest were stored away... until now. Realizing that the photos deserved to be seen full size, Bear FamilyY lustrously restored them and packaged them in a 16-page LP-sized hardcover book, accompanied by a one-sided LP of rare live audio from the same era. The other side of the LP features a portrait of Cash engraved into the audiophile-grade 180 gram vinyl. And so now, eighty years after Johnny Cash was born in rural Arkansas at the height of the Great Depression, we see him in a new light. -- There are many Johnny Cash collectors, and this is Cash in words, music, and... above all... striking unpublished images! -- Also available as a digipak CD with a 28-page booklet.

Louvin Brothers - Handpicked Songs 1955-1962
Simply put, Alabama natives Ira and Charlie Louvin are country music pioneers, Baptist blood brothers known for their trademark close harmony vocal style, mandolin magic, and emotive material ranging from spiritual standards, well-crafted covers to influential originals. The Louvin Brothers’ holy, honest, and soul affirming sound—recorded on a series of formative releases on the Decca label in the early 1940’s—tapped deep into the pair’s rural religious upbringing in a strictly gospel fashion. By the time they signed with Capitol Records in 1952, they were tried and tested road warriors and found themselves branching out into more secular content and delivery. In 1955, the duo was accepted as performers into Nashville country institution the Grand Ole Opry, cementing their reputation as the best in the business.

But there was also a dark underside to the chart-topping hit maker’s righteous exterior. Older brother Ira, a foot taller than the diminutive yet no less formidable Charlie, had developed a serious drinking problem. Amplified by a feisty temper and a series of failed marriages, his wild child nature became more of a liability than asset to the show business pair. In 1963, Charlie had enough, and with self-preservation in mind, quit the Louvin Brothers. Though both soldiered on as solo acts, Ira succumbed to his fiery demons in 1965 and lost his life in a horrific drunk driving accident (ironically, the fault of the driver of the other car). Pushing ahead as a much loved and respected country music ambassador and proud gatekeeper of the Louvin’s legacy until his passing in early 2011, we are still grieving Charlie’s departure. Light In The Attic Records is honored to help share this American institution with fans young and old through a series of archival re-releases.

A star studded curatorial compilation, Handpicked Songs 1955-1962 (LITA 074, LP) is a shot of Louvin Brothers magic. This LP features 14 tracks performed by the Louvin Brothers during their golden era, each personally selected by the likes of Beck, Emmylou Harris, Will Oldham, Kris Kristofferson, Jim James, Dolly Parton and many more, all housed in a deluxe Stoughton gatefold sleeve plus a full color insert with period archival photos, and extensive liner notes along with meticulously re-mastered audio from the original tapes. Morning, noon or night, let the Louvin Brothers take you to a simpler time, when good old country music ruled the airwaves.

VA: - Crossroads In Cowtown 2LP
Crossroads in Cowtown explores a period in country music history when genres were being bent and boundaries smashed. Focusing on “western” music, either produced in or influenced by Californian studios and artists of the fifties, this compilation delves into the classic hillbilly sounds of the period and revels in the oddities created when disparate styles collide in the search for commercial success. By the 1950s, the classic period for western swing had come to an end, the big bands were rapidly declining and rock & roll was in the ascendancy. Many might-have-been country singers were choosing to record rockabilly or rockabilly-influenced hillbilly styles, while western swing stars were starting to make more pop and rhythm & blues influenced (and influencing) material. Western swing had always been a composite music, built from elements of jazz and blues, old-time cowboy and fiddle tunes, and the polkas and waltzes of the old countries. Now, in the fifties, this heady musical cocktail was being produced in state-of-the-art recording studios and was taking on the lustre of the more pop-oriented productions of the time. This is still a form of “country music”, but one where Spade Cooley can orchestrate western strings with big band horn arrangements and Hank Penny can pen a tune that will go on to be a jump blues classic, where the sweet harmonies and pop crooning can replace the nasal twang and still be country.Compiled by Brighton-based DJ Shamblin Sexton, Crossroads in Cowtown collects together a swinging selection of western pop tunes that brings on the hillbilly fever!
