| Harry Fontana - Lonely Sun Harry Fontana, a native of Helsinki, Finland, started his musical career at 7 years old. Inspired by the James Dean Movie "Rebel Without a Cause", he formed his first professional band, The Thunderbirds, at 13. His second band, formed at age 15, The Billyboy Rockers appeared at public and private venues around Helsinki until 1989 when Harry signed his first recording contract with K-Tel International and formed his new band, The Blast to the Past. It was with this band that his first record was released. He first came to Nashville in 1992 where he formed the band Lonesome Train, which appeared at the Acuff Theater at Opryland in 1992. In 1993 he formed the Tennessee Toneboys, playing on Second Ave. in Nashville on the street. After a short period of time, the crowds were large enough to necessitate the police blocking two lanes to make room. He was recruited off Second Ave. and invited to the United Artists building on Music Square to sign a contract with Heaven Spun Records. 1994 he formed the Harry Fontana Rockabilly Trio in Helsinki for overseas tours, which released an EP with "Confidential, "Wildcat", "Sweet Love On My Mind" and "You Look That Good To Me" that same year. In 1998 Harry released his "Rockabilly House" album from Colvert Brothers Records, Nashville, TN. Also in 1998, Harry’s contribution to Rockabilly music was mentioned in “The History of Rockabilly, A Forty Year Journey” (Hal-Leonard) by Billy Poore. In 2003 he was contacted by a charitable organization, "The Pietarinkadun Oilers" to write a song, "3 X 20", for the Finnish ice hockey team to be played during the International World Ice Hockey Championships held in Helsinki. In 2004 he was featured in Bill Rouda’s, “Nashville’s Lower Broad, The Street That Music Made” (Smithsonian Books). His photograph from this book is also featured in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. In 2006 he was invited to appear on the Johnny Cash tribute album "Train of Love, A Tribute to Johnny Cash", contributing his version of "Get Rhythm". In 2009 he was contacted to be a part of the “Slap That Bass, Finnish Rockabilly 1979-2009” box set, to be released in February 2010. It features his bio and one of his early recordings “OH-OH, Get Out Of The Car” from 1990. Harry has played regular shows on Lower Broadway in Nashville at Roberts Western World, Laylas Bluegrass Inn and Wolfies, in addition to having appeared at World Famous Tooties Orchid Lounge, Legends, Full Moon Saloon, Printers Alley, The Wildhorse Saloon and all over Nashville. He has played with Hank Williams III, Chuck Berry, DJ Fontana, Charlie Feathers, Paul Burlison, Kenny Vaughn, Brian Setzer, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Marty Stuart, Billy Burnette, James Intveld and last but not least, recorded “Confidential” with Pentti Lasanen. |

With his Finnish dream team, the Bluelight Records All Stars lead by Olli Haavisto, Thompson takes us back to the 50’s and 60’s with inborn poise and fresh approach. Recorded in Petrax, a top trim studio built in an old cowhouse, this thrilling compilation of carefully selected and intuitively arranged rarities and favorites alike offers a heartfelt portrait of a Southern country boy in the Windy City. For a Hayden Thompson connoisseur this album holds many treats: “Cheese & Crackers”, a blues humoresque originally cut by Roscoe Gordon for Sun Records in 1957, is now recorded by the Great Storyteller himself for the first time. The catchy, melancholy rumba “Watcha Gonna Do”, also written by Hayden, will most certainly pack the dance floor. The other revision on the album, Hayden’s signature song “Love My Baby” (by Junior Parker), obtained a slightly darker finish than the early Sun Records recording by Hayden in 1957, mainly due to the ample baritone rhythm guitar. The easy-access presentation of the first Cash choice, “Without Love”, sets an intriguing contrast to the stark jeremiad of the lyrics, whereas the happy rolling piano boogie of “Hey Porter” makes the Tennessee train ride a pleasure indeed. A tireless locomotive consisting of the guitar, drums and the slap bass drives the other railroad song, the bluesy “Long Black Train”, written by Thompson’s label mate Conway Twitty. Piano joins the engine again for the steaming Brook Benton cover “Hurtin’ Inside” and the exhilarating cowboy shuffle “Pretty Lou”. “Honey ‘Cause I Love You” from the Carl Perkins songbook, and the Bob Luman ballad “Still Loving You”, exhibit Hayden Thompson’s nuance palette from the gentler side, and the Elvis standard “You’re A Heartbreaker” receives a surprisingly endearing quality with only two nylon-string acoustic guitars carrying Hayden’s velvety, whispering voice. Residing with his wife Georgia in the Chicago area, but born in Booneville, Mississippi in 1938, Hayden Thompson is one of the original rockabilly cats who recorded for the legendary Sun Records label in the mid 1950’s. The revival of the genre brought him back to music, and since 1984 he has continued to periodically tour Europe and Japan, as well as to perform in the U.S. The Finnish recordings clearly demonstrate his voice is as strong as ever, hence the playful nickname “Iron Hayden” given by the band. As you can easily detect, we don’t only have a brilliant vocalist accompanied by skilful players here, but a true organic combo with genuine energy and drive, as well as a visionary production team. In the world of overproduced and slick bluegrass music this album stands out. No overdubs - no head phones! The whole album was recorded in two days on tape. Jussi Syren & The Groundbreakers put the edge back to bluegrass! Liner notes by Bob Mitchell: The group came to my attention on a European World of Bluegrass recording. Jussi Syren & The Groundbreakers live in Finland, a long way from Bill Monroe’s home in Kentucky. But, make no mistake, they understand and are committed to the essential elements of traditional bluegrass: lots of drive, tight harmonies, first rate musicianship, and lyrics that are not overpowered by unnecessary showmanship. To insure a more traditional and natural sound, this new project was recorded live on tape - with no overdubs. Their sound is comparable to Red Allen and The Kentuckians, and the Lilly Brothers. Jussi says, “That´s because we played a lot in bars and honky-tonks , just as they did.... It´s a noisy environment and you have to be loud and hard driving. The group is anchored by Syren’s distinctive vocals and mandolin styling. Tauri Oksala contributes driving, impressive banjo, finger picking guitar, and harmony vocals. J.P. | Mac Curtis - Songs I Wish I Wrote Mac Curtis recorded this album in Finland in fall 2010. Release date is April 15th. Pre-orders are welcome. Bluelight Records will release a CD by the Texas rockabilly legend Mac Curtis in April 2011. Mac Curtis, born in Fort Worth in 1939, began his career in the mid 1950’s with a sequence of singles that later became top rockabilly classics, such as “Grandaddy’s Rockin’”, “If I Had Me A Woman” and “You Ain’t Treatin’ Me Right”. Later in the 1960’s he started a career as a radio DJ and became a respected and nationally known figure in the country music industry. In the next decade he joined the rockabilly revival circuit and created a steady stream of releases on the legendary Rollin’ Rock label, and he has been performing in rockabilly concerts in the USA, Europe and Japan ever since. Although best known for his 1950’s rockabilly recordings – the frenziest of the era – cutting a country album is nothing new for Mac. In the late 1960’s his stint on Epic and GRT labels produced two excellent country LP’s, “Sunshine Man” and “Early In The Morning”, plus a string of charting singles. When Bluelight Records proposed the new country album, he stated only half-jokingly “Actually I’ve been thinking about cutting a hillbilly album”. Not quite hillbilly, but rather a set of what you can call 1960’s uptown country is what the new album turned out to be. The album, titled “Songs I Wish I Wrote” by the artist, is a compilation of carefully selected and arranged covers and fresh interpretations of some of Mac Curtis’ own recordings. The covers include treats like “Beautiful Annabel Lee” and “Singer Of Sad Songs” from the Waylon Jennings songbook, Bob Dylan’s “One More Time”, “Restless” by Carl Perkins, “This Time Tomorrow” by Sonny Curtis, and “So What Let It Rain” by Lefty Frizzell, and of the old Mac Curtis repertoire we’ll hear “Sunshine Man”, “100 Pounds Of Honey”, and “Turn Away From Me”. The album was cut in Finland with an innovative team of musicians. The same crew has been in charge for the two latest and highly acclaimed albums by another veteran rocker Hayden Thompson. The recording location, an old cowhouse converted into a top-of-the-line studio on an operational farm, is surely an ideal setting for recording a classy country album with a dash of hillbilly flavor. |

MARTÍ BROM, a performer internationally acclaimed for her hard-driving rockabilly and sultry traditional country vocals, collaborated on the album with premier Washington area musicians and Grammy-winning producer PETER BONTA to create a contender for best roots rock, hardcore country, rock „n‟ roll, rockabilly, Americana album of the decade. According to MARTÍ, however, her goal was more modest - simply to record a DC-themed thank you note for the Washington music community‟s hospitality during her family‟s military tour of duty here. " NOT FOR NOTHIN´ " MARTÍ‟s core support consisted of DC mainstays PEDRO SERA on guitar, LOUIE NEWMYER on bass, and SAUL McCORMACK on drums - with Boogie Man DARYL DAVIS on piano. This energized crew was supplemented with key contributions from Dieselbilly BILL KIRCHEN on guitar and vocals, bluegrass fiddle player TAD MARKS, rockabilly BILLY HANCOCK on guitar, DAVE VAN ALLEN on twangin‟ steel guitar, veteran DEL PUSCHERT on tenor sax, down and dirty CHRIS WATLING on baritone sax, and bluegrass BRYAN SMITH on slappin‟ doghouse bass. Martí selected all natural ingredients in making this tribute to the current and historical musical resources of the Washington area. Not only was the musical roster home-grown, so was the studio (BIAS), production team, engineer (Grammy Award winner JIM ROBESON). GOOFIN RECORDS also approached the DC label of RIPSAW RECORDS as a partner to ensure 100% DC bona fides. Songwriters with a D.C. area connection include rockabillies TEX RUBINOWITZ, JANIS MARTIN, and SEAN MENCHER, BILL KIRCHEN and his wife LOUISE, as well as Baltimore‟s honky-tonkin‟ ARTY HILL and Virginia‟s Austin, Texas transplant and long-time Marti songwriter, TERI JOYCE. MARTÍ also gives her signature spin to tunes popularized by Winchester‟s PATSY CLINE, rhythm and blues hall of famer RUTH BROWN, rockabilly/punk rocker MARTHA HULL, bluegrass hall of famer BILL HARRELL, and legendary Baltimore rocker PAT BROWN. |
