Jimmy Spellman - Doggonit 40-page booklet, 28 tracks. Playing time approx. 58 minutes. - For the first time all of Spellman's Viv, Dot, Vik, Rev, and Redstart recordings in one package, with Al Casey featured on guitar. As usual, Bear Family goes all out with the best high quality visual graphics with Digipac packaging and high end digital sound by original Audio Recorders engineer Jack Miller. Includes unreleased tracks, plus six song demos. Extensive liner notes by Johnny Vallis and Arizona Music historian John Dixon. -- On September 20, 2004, Jimmy Spellman was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Best known for his rockin' 'Doggonit' on Dot and series of primitive country classics cut for Lee Hazlewood's Viv label, this cult favorite has also been honored by the Madison Square Garden Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside such notable local talents Duane Eddy, Jimmy Dell, Sanford Clark, Al Casey, Chuck Mayfield, Wayne Newton and Loy Clingman. -- Despite a central role in Phoenix, Arizona's fertile rockabilly scene of the 1950s, Jimmy Spellman's musical career has never been examined in-depth. That changes with Bear Family's comprehensive package, collecting for the first time all of Spellman's well-regarded Viv, Dot, Vik, Rev and Redstart recordings. Spellman was the first artist chosen to record for Hazlewood's Viv Records imprint in 1955. Before hitmakers Sanford Clark and Duane Eddy, Hazlewood spent more time and money on Spellman as the conduit for his early compositions. In his short aix years of recording (1955-1960), Spellman covers the Country, Rock and Pop styles of music with class.

Jodimars - Well Now, Dig This ! original Ember LP + five bonus tracks. 17 great big beat rockers & jivers, this group was made up from Bill Haley's Comets. The Jodimars made six singles for Capitol Records, and although none were major national hits, the group went on to enjoy cult status among Rock 'n' Roll aficionados, and the original 12-track LP anthology released by Ember in 1970 is a collectors' item. This special 'Expanded Edition' comprises all the sides released on their six Capitol singles along with 5 bonus tracks, which are the two demos which originally won The Jodimars their Capitol contract plus three Capitol outtakes. It's clear from the recordings that the band's lack of chart success wasn't down to a lack of quality or commercial hooks - they are great examples of early R&R combining originality with a real professional delivery. They were classic victims of a record company that didn't know how to promote this strange new genre of music. However, R&R lovers have the chance to enjoy it now, and it will be well received by media and collectors alike.

| Joe Barry - A Fool To Care: Classic Recordings 1960-1977 2CD t may surprise some readers to learn that many musicians from South Louisiana do not like their music to be categorised as swamp pop (a term coined originally by music writer Bill Millar). For the rest of us, it feels like the perfect way to describe the rolling rhythms and unique vocals that define the great records which came out of the area between the latter 1950s and the mid-60s. Whether he would have liked to be defined by said term or not, Louisiana’s Joe Barry is one of the greatest exponents of the genre, and the recordings that he made between 1959 and 1964 in particular embrace many of its most treasured moments. Joe only charted nationally a couple of times, his greatest hit being the wonderfully languid revival of hillbilly standard ‘I’m A Fool To Care’, which many thought was the work of Fats Domino until they saw Joe on TV or in photos. But his lengthy career amounted to more than a couple of hit 45s. This new 2CD set, named after Joe’s career record, compiles almost 40 sides from Joe’s first period of recording, plus the dozen tracks cut during his brief comeback of the mid-1970s – almost all of them taped under the supervision of his long-time producer Huey Meaux. To ensure that “I’m A Fool To Care” would be the definitive collection of Joe’s collaborations with Meaux, Alec Palao and I went back to the producer’s original tapes and re-copied every single one in what turned out to be something of a marathon session inHoustonlast March. Everything here is mastered from those new transfers, with the exception of two Sho-Biz sides, which had to be transferred from a 45 as no tape seems to have survived. Alec was also able to mix a few of the tracks (some previously unreleased) into true stereo for the first time, from a handful of surviving Cosimo’s multi-tracks. We have not repeated the mistakes of some previous compilations, which included tracks not sung by Joe. Although there have been previous anthologies of his work released during the last 15 years, we guarantee than none of them will offer anything like the level of audio excellence this one does. With an extensive essay based around an interview conducted by John Broven in the late 70s, and a booklet that contains lots or rare images and label shots of almost every 45 featured on the collection, this 2CD set will be the perfect way to remember this beloved exponent of South Louisiana R&B … or swamp pop, if you don’t happen to be from down that way. | Joe Clay - Duck Tail 180-gram vinyl. DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) Disc Cutting: Günter Pauler at Pauler Acoustics, Northeim, Germany; mastered by Bob Jones, pressed by Pallas, Diepholz. -- In a brief recording career spanning just one solitary month in the Spring of 1956, Joe Clay cut this collection of savage, wild, primeval rockabilly music for Vik Records, a subsidiary of RCA Victor. He seemed destined to be no more than a footnote in rock 'n' roll history but the quality of his work would not allow him to be completely forgotten. -- This collection contains his timeless nuggets of pure rockabilly gold. 'Sixteen Chicks', 'Duck Tail', 'Slipping Out And Sneaking In' - classic records that should be a part of everybody's collection. |

John Lewis Trio - The Billy Banks Sessions NEW album from John Lewis - the frontman of the Rimshots. In America they called it “soul”, In Wales we call it “hwyl”, singing with heart felt emotion. commitment and passion. Penarth’s very own Retro-esque Indie musician /singer/songwriter John Lewis has it in spades. John is one of the organisers and founder of the near legendary Penarth Pilot Sunday night jam session. His former band the Rimshots made a huge splash across Europe. John has recorded for labels in Holland, Japan, Australia, London (the oh so cool Vinyl Japan), and Germany – a made in Wales Hank Williams Tribute that won a prestigious British Music Award as album of the year. As well as backing and recording with many of his heroes, rock and cult legends on weekend festivals all over the globe. John also headlined many London gigs where stars came to watch the messianic eyed charismatic lead singer and chief songwriter in action. Under his alter ego name of Johnny Bach, he has four CDs available, recorded along with Gretsch Twangmeister Darrel Higham, last seen touring with the Amazing Imelda May, which John has supported many a time solo Haven’t seen him, where can I catch this local treasure before St Fagan’s grabs him? Weeeeeeeeell John Lewis tours Solo or with his Trio all over. He also can be seen doing the odd Johnny Bach and The Moonshine Boozers gig and Rimshots re-union. As well as session work and playing guitar with Pontchartrain, So no excuses

John Zacherle - Monster Mash / Scary Tales Operating out of Philadelphia, Cameo-Parkway was among the most successful independent record companies of the early 1960s, turning out a veritable production line of teen-friendly singles by artists such as Chubby Checker, the Orlons, the Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp and Bobby Rydell. This month sees the release on Ace of the latest batch of collections from the vaults of Cameo and sister logo Parkway in the shape of twofers from Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells and self-appointed “Cool Ghoul” John Zacherle. John Sebastian did the notes for the John Zacherle set. Yep, that John Sebastian, he of the Lovin’ Spoonful. It seems he was a bit of a Boris Karloff fan, which is how he first became aware of John Zacherle, who hosted re-runs of old horror movies on WCAU-TV out of Philadelphia in the late 1950s. The craze for scary movies spread to the record biz, which led to Zacherle reaching #6 with ‘Dinner With Drac’ in 1958. (OK, we’re a bit late for Hallowe’en with this release, but hey, there’s always next year.) By Mick Patrick (ACE Records)
