| VA: - Miami Rockabilly Wall to wall beaches, balmy weather, palm trees swaying in ocean breezes, and floral splendour are the images associated with Miami and its sister city, Miami Beach which in less than a century rose from a mosquito-infested swamp that is the Everglades to blossom into a sub-tropical metropolis. Miami enjoyed its heyday in the 40s and 50s. Planes trailing long streamers would fly over the beach advertising multi-course meals for $1.50 and the cafeterias teamed with people from all walks of life, many of them retirees or honeymooners earning Miami the dubious reputation as a "land of the newly wed or the nearly dead". For many years after the war, Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, one of the most popular shows on American TV, was broadcast from a Miami hotel, further publicising Miami's delights to a nation-wide audience. Unlike major recording centres such as Memphis or Nashville, Miami lacked a musical identity and attracted very few out-of-town acts. Despite this the area was home to several wild and rocking combos. MIAMI ROCKABILLY, which showcases most of the local rockabilly and rock'n'roll talent active in the area between 1956 and 1960, has been a long time in the making. Ted Carroll tracked down some of the material several years ago and later struck a deal for the remaining songs over a kitchen table in the backwoods of Southern Florida. Rob Finnis made sense of it all and researched an in-depth sleevenote. The result is a value-for-money 32-tracker crammed with ultra-rare rockabilly gems most of which are making their CD debut here, remastered from original tapes or acetates by Sound Mastering's Ace boffins (pun intended). If one or two of these tracks sound a bit cheesy, then that's the way it was in the studio on the day. Perhaps the best known recording on MIAMI ROCKABILLY is Tommy Spurlin's Hang Loose. Originally issued in 1956 (only in the USA) it became hugely popular during the British rockabilly revival of the late 70s and a timely re-issue on a specialist label was a perennial seller. Another of Spurlin's songs, Heart Throb was featured in the frat movie smash "Porky's" some 25 years after it was recorded. Also included are Curley Jim Morrison's ultra-rare UK release Airforce Blues and such obscurities as Wes Hardin's Any Way and Ross Minimi's frantic 1959 workout, Baby Rock. These last two would cost in the region of $1200 if one wished to acquire the original AFS and Gulfstream label 45s. And if you like your rockabilly wild, woolly and uncompromising then Ray Pate & The Rhythm Rockets' adrenaline charged 2-sider, My Shadow c/w Lucky Day will suit. | VA: - Midsummer Rock'n'Roll Jamboree 2008 Huelyn Duvall (USA), Flat Git It Gang, Vince & The Peaktones, High Speed Generation, West 45 Huleyn Duvall Huelyn Duvall, a true legend of 50’s rock’n’roll music. “Three Month To Kill” was recorded in 1958 at the Owen Bradley Studios in Nashville, Tennessee with such highlight musicians as Hank Garland and Grady Martin on guitar, Floyd Cramer on piano, Buddy Harmon on Drums and The Jordanaires on backup vocals. It must have been a big thrill for a 17 year old kid to cut these great rock’n’roll tunes with such great pickers. It’s No wonder was recorded in 1958 at The Clifford Herring Studios in Forth Worth, Texas. Sugar Coated Love and Green River was recorded in Frisco, Texas in 2005 and are released here for the first time. Sugar Coated Love is an old Lazy Lester blues tune that Huelyn changed to rockabilly. Green River is the well known Creedence song cut here in a great raw version.Check out his new CD, Get Carried Away on Goofin’ Record where he is backed by Wildfire Willie and The Ramblers. Vince with the Peaktones Vince with the Peaktones are a 50’s rock’n’roll, teenbeat band,invented by Antii Pikanen (guitarist from Baymores bandits) and Lars Strandheim trom Tail Records, all guyes in the band exept the base player, Fredrik Stenlund been doin this music for a long time. Tage `Knoen´ Pikanen on drums, Micke “Big Dick” Ek on piano, Lasse on saxophone every know and then, the leadsinger, Vince are also touring with two other trios! Mostly rockabilly performances, Wreckless is one of the trios, Billy And The Kids are the other trio. The two songs on this compilation are recorded live, like music should be recorded. In spring 2009 they will release a full cd on Tail Records! Until then, keep rockin,loud and weird. Flat Git It Gang The Flat Git it Gang is a 8 piece Country / Hillbilly band from Sweden who focus on the early 50`s pre-rockabilly music with a high energy touch. Their influences are Maddox Family, Red Foley and Ray Price to mention a few. Most of the memebers are well known from other Swedish 1950`s rockin’ band. They are working hard to write their own material and planning to do a full length album here on Vintjärn records in the near future. If you ever wanted to se a real 1950`s authentic Country / Hillbilly show you should really check out the Flat Git it Gang. Its Grand Old Opry Time High-Speed Generation This young rockabilly trio from Gästrikland and Dalarna have been playin' together since the end of last summer (2007). Anton and Christopher earlier ben playing togeter in the runawayboys trio, and the bassman Michael came from nowhere with a great spirit. They are all just 18 years old and together they're mixing own material with old covers in a bit neo kind of modern rockabilly/rock’n’ roll style. With influences like Gene Vincent, Stray Cats, Go Cat Go, Burnette etc they're doing everything they can to keep rockabilly alive.. |
