VA: - Saint Etienne Present Songs for The Dog & Duck
Ace have never previously put out any CDs featuring UK glam rock next to rockabilly and sweet soul: I’m sure not many people thought we ever would. But this is the soundtrack to an evening in a Soho boozer - an eclectic selection of great music across the pop oeuvre on an imaginary jukebox stationed in a (real) pub called the Dog And Duck. Bob Stanley and his Saint Etienne team-mates, Dog And Duck habitués, have picked their dream musical moments to accompany a night of serious drinking and pop philosophising.

The mood is set with a catchy early 60s pop instrumental by KPM regular John Scott, whose ‘Hi Flutin’ Boogie’ sounds like it came from a TV series that I know really well, but can’t for the life of me think which. It was produced by someone called George Martin apparently. This is followed by one of those great, quirky, UK pop numbers, though admittedly written by US citizen Randy Newman. It’s performed by London music biz veteran Duffy Power and comes complete with flugelhorns; quite a departure for an erstwhile rocker.

Now I knew that the Heavenly crowd had a soft spot for girl groups and the inclusion of the Darlettes’ ‘Lost’ is an expected treat, cunningly followed by Bettye’s ‘Make Me Yours’; clever, these guys could be DJs if the day job slows down. Next up is home territory for me, Herbert Hunter’s Nashville-created, Northern England-acclaimed dance number, ‘I Was Born To Love You’. Who said northerners ain’t got soul?

Then it’s back to the girls, though Claudine Clark’s husky tones don’t have the sweet allure of her backing vocalists. She was singing about a burial ground, so perhaps she had a fright. Texas rockers Elroy Dietzel & the Rhythm Bandits hit us with some good ole rock’n’roll swiftly followed up by Hal Harris’ hiccoughing rockabilly portrait of his ‘Jitterbop Baby’. That sounds like perfect pub music for a Saturday night tear-up to me. Rocker Little Richard gives us a later-career, soul-party stomper from his Vee-Jay era, neatly illustrated by a rare demo that was flown in all the way from our basement warehouse for scanning: thanks Simon. The song wasn’t officially released until 1970; these popsters sure know their onions.

I could have guessed they would have gone for some Zombies. ‘She Does Everything For Me’ is a great choice. Colin Blunstone’s unique vocals get me every time. It’s so clean. A Northern Soul ender is more of a shock, but the well-crafted song and superb production on Dan Folger’s ‘The Way Of The Crowd’ deserves to be appreciated across the genres.

Then there was Bill Oddie. Stranger things have happened, but not many. Who would have thought the ex-Goodie and bird-peeper would be appearing on Ace, especially as a serious artist? And he’s actually good at both the writing and performing end of this very different discipline; the song could have come straight out of the Brill. A shock of that magnitude needs to be followed by some solid ground and our Mary (Ms Love) and her evergreen soul staple ‘Lay This Burden Down’ is just that. Fellow Kent stable-mate Little Ann then provides the enigmatic ‘Sweep It Out In The Shed’, courtesy of Dave Hamilton’s Detroit master tapes and she is followed in turn by the prettily-voiced Barbara Lewis on ‘How Can I Tell You’. I must have missed out on that one first and second time around; it’s wonderful, but I’m not sure I should be getting soul lessons from indie rockers.

Barbara’s track does have a pop sensibility link, with Brian Hyland and Del Shannon having written it; the next musical leap to ex-Box Top Alex Chilton’s tender ‘The EMI Song’ is seamless. I still haven’t figured out what it’s about but I’m very glad to have been turned on to it. What’s not to like about Sniff’n’The Tears’ ‘Driver’s Seat’? Nothing: but now it’s on a hip compilation you’re allowed to hum it in public. From out of the left field comes an RAK B-side ‘Flight 2’ by Angelo & Eighteen which takes me back to the fascinating rhythms of John Kongos’ hit ‘Tokoloshe Man’. Glam-inspired Mustard used the approved super solid beat of the day by presumably using a couple of drummers and getting anyone passing the studio to come on in and clap and stomp; it’s infectious enough to kickstart a revival. Or perhaps it already was a revival, Gino with Johnny Greek’s ‘Hand Clappin’ Time’ was recorded a decade before, but sounds right in the same bag. Jump back another six years and Huey Smith was already ‘Having A Good Time’.

That’s three rave-ups in a row, so it’s time for a smoocher and it comes from the unlikely Ohio Players. Those cats were associated with spaced-out funk, but their paean to a lay-dee named Varee is in the classic soul lover ballad, complete with rap intro and some sweet shoop-shooping setting the mood behind a killer lead. That sort of quality didn’t happen overnight and we are shown the roots of slow dance in Robert & Johnny’s intense drama ‘We Belong Together’. There’s more lingering melody from the redoubtable Les Paul & Mary Ford with the now socially taboo ‘Smoke Rings’ which leads us neatly to the moody 70s smash ‘Pinball’ by Brian Protheroe. It’s OK, you can admit you like it too, it’s just passed its silver jubilee.

Eclectic, esoteric, inspired? I’m not sure which, but like Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour, a lot of people are about to discover some very fine new music.

VA: - Winter Dance Party - 50th Anniversary Special
Special issue commemorating the 50th anniversary of “The Day The Music Died”

It was late January, 1959, when the tragic Winter Dance Party began; a gruelling twenty-four day tour of the mid-west by a rock 'n' roll revue which included Buddy Holly and his group, J P "Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens. Poorly funded and inefficiently organized, the tour began a disaster and steadily got worse, with a motley successionof clapped-out coaches being the only transportation provided to the artists by the booking agency. Eleven days into the tour and facing another tortuous 400 mile road trip to the next venue on a freezing bus, Holly decided to charter a plane after their unscheduled appearance at ClearLake, Iowa. He and the two other headliners took off for Fargo, NorthDakota, in the teeth of a blizzard during the early hours of 3rd February1959... it was a date that would come to be known as one of the darkest in the whole history of rock 'n' roll...

VA: - You Heard Them Here First - Rock's Icons Before They Were Fa
Everyone has to start somewhere, even famous rock stars. Not many of them achieved stardom with their first record. That’s the theme of “You Heard Them Here First”, a collection of two-dozen cuts by big name acts, all recorded before anyone knew them from Adam.

Take Arthur Lee, wigged-out lynchpin of the band Love, who in his early dues-paying days briefly fronted an obscure instrumental combo. The MGs were a big noise in Memphis, but few folk in Los Angeles got to hear the L.A.G.s. Now’s your chance. Or Marty Balin, who, long before Jefferson Airplane took off, tried his hand at teen idol-dom, seemingly unaware the world already had a Gene Pitney, a Ricky Nelson and a Bobby Vee. Who knew?

Everyone knows the Righteous Brothers, but not many are familiar with Bill Medley’s previous group the Paramours, blue-eyed Coasters clones extraordinaire. Motown kyboshed the Mynah Byrds’ chances of stardom by cancelling the release of their single; no one knew who Neil Young and Rick James were at the time. Young’s later back-up band Crazy Horse recorded in earlier guises too, amongst them the Rockets, while the Beefeaters osmosed into the Byrds, Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal started out in an unknown group named the Rising Sons and Gram Parsons cut his teeth in the International Submarine Band. Bob Dylan knew a good thing when he heard it and he heard it in Levon & the Hawks, who teamed up with him and changed their name to the Band. The Pigeons found few takers until they slowed things down and re-launched themselves as Vanilla Fudge. Hear all these bands here.

Danny Lee, anyone? We know him now as genius songwriter Dan Penn. What about Link Cromwell? Where would Patti Smith be without Lenny Kaye? How does Mark Robinson grab you? Just a quick listen is all it takes to identify the unmistakeable bass voice of Lee Hazlewood. Nilsson’s first chart record dates from 1969, but he’d been scratching around in the music biz for years by then, writing songs for the Ronettes, singing demos for Little Richard and recording singles under pseudonyms like Bo Pete.

Collectors will tell you it’s invariably the records made by well-known artists before they were famous that are the hardest to find and the most expensive to buy. Expect to fork out over £500 for an original copy of ‘Liza Jane’ by Davie Jones with the King Bees, the fabled first single released by the lad who grew up to David Bowie, for example. By purchasing this CD, you save yourself a small fortune and get pre-fame recordings by Lou Reed, Joe Cocker, Cher, Mike Nesmith, Peter Frampton, J.J. Cale, Warren Zevon and P.F. Sloan thrown in for good measure.

Vince Taylor - Jet Black Leather Machine
Who Vince Taylor was depended on who you were, and who he wanted you to think he was. To his parents, he was Brian Holden from Middlesex. London’s rock’n’rollers of the late 1950s saw Vince Taylor, the dapper American encapsulation of the music. To France of the early 60s he was the black leather rebel, their very own Gene Vincent, wild and never to be tamed. His bandmates of 1965 saw the new Jesus, the son of God.

For David Bowie, the rise and fall of Vince Taylor was the inspiration behind Ziggy Stardust. In 1996 Bowie told the BBC’s Alan Yentob that Taylor was “out of his gourd. Totally flipped. He came out on stage in white robes and said he was Jesus Christ. It was the end of Vince – his career and everything else.” Bowie recalled meeting Taylor in mid-60s London, outside Charing Cross Station. Opening a map on the pavement, Taylor got a magnifying glass out and showed the aspiring rock star the sites where UFOs would land.

Beyond the stories, you have the music. Taylor composed the classic ‘Brand New Cadillac’ – one of the few moments in British rock’n’roll that stands with its American influences. The Clash covered it, Mungo Jerry rewrote it as ‘Baby Jump’ and it was a standard for mid-60s beat groups like the Renegades. The second release on Chiswick Records – the forerunner of this label – was a March 1976 reissue of ‘Brand New Cadillac’. It had become one of the most popular records on the rock’n’roll circuit and was a sure seller. This compilation brings Vince Taylor home.

Jet Black Leather Machine is the first compilation to tell the Vince Taylor story, drawing from all his important musical moments, all the important phases of his music. His complete British recordings are married to the cream of his French-made material for the first time. ‘Jet Black Machine’, a UK single from 1960, is incredibly kinetic rock’n’roll. His powerful 1965 version of ‘My Baby Left Me’ is unmediated, as wild as it can get – did his French label think that this roar was the logical evolution of pop? His take on ‘Long Tall Sally’ is equally abandoned. ‘Hi Heel Sneakers’, also from 1965, is animalistic. Then there’s the creepy ‘Rock’n’Roll Station’, a 1976 collaboration with experimental musician Jac Berrocal.

Extreme, multi-faceted and hyper-real, often at the same time, Vince Taylor was the Jet Black Leather Machine.

Bob Luman - Bob Rocks
Contains a generous 36 tracks: the equivalent of a two-CD set. - Presents the best of his 'rockin' sides. - Contains rare Texas demos and originally unissued Imperial and Capitol tracks from 1957 and '58. - A feast for guitar fans, featuring the work of legendary pickers like James Burton, Eddie Cochran and Roy Buchanan. - Offers Bear Family's critically acclaimed sound quality – these original tapes have never sounded so good! - Big, good looking, a fine singer, and a hell of an entertainer. Women loved him and men admired him. Bob Luman had it all. Bob's entire recording career has been documented by Bear Family Records on two critically acclaimed box sets and a DVD of vintage performances. Now, the rockin' best of these two sets is available on a single CD, drawn largely from Luman's earliest years. These tracks – including originally unissued material - offer ample proof of why Luman is an icon to rockabilly collectors today. You'll hear not only the finest in Luman's virile vocals, including his biggest hit Let's Think About Living, but also the stunning lead guitar work by the legendary James Burton. Sample the performances that led fellow Imperial Records artist Ricky Nelson to wrestle Luman's band away from him after the two men first met in Los Angeles in 1957. Included with this 36 track set is a detailed biography of the Texas rocker by music historian Hank Davis, based on exclusive interviews with Luman's friends, fellow musicians (including Burton) and family members. Learn how an aspiring baseball player and country singer changed his tune almost overnight after witnessing a vintage Elvis Presley performance in August, 1955. Luman's story is almost mythical and this collection is a worthy addition to Bear Family's highly regarded 'Rocks' collection of pioneering individual artists. It's all here, on a single generously programmed CD, offering the very best of Bob Luman. There is no better collection of its kind on the market.

Eddie Cochran - I'm Ready
All tracks were recorded during the years 1954-1956. The first four have vocals by Eddie accompanied by his mentor, steel guitar player Chuck Foreman. Then there is the first of two fine instrumentals before eight tracks by Don Deal recorded at the famous Gold Star Studio in Hollywood, where Eddie later cut many of his hits. The album also has 10 tracks featuring Hank Cochran, who went on to become a successful country artist and songwriter in his own right. The earliest four of these were issued as by Hank Hammer; four others when he and Eddie performed together as The Cochran Brothers (although they were not related). Finally there are two tracks apiece fronted by the relatively obscure country singers Jess Willard and Tom Forse, and four by Jerry Capehart who became Eddie's manager and co-writer of his most successful recordings.
