Chubby Checker - It's Pony Time / Let's Twist Again
Before Tamla/Motown, there was Cameo/Parkway. A groundbreaking Philadelphia imprint, the label churned out an astonishing number of huge hits (most written in-house) during its 12-year heyday and turned a gaggle of unknown young locals into stars. Sound familiar?

Although primarily remembered for its myriad dance craze hits, the catalogue actually encompasses the whole of rock’s golden era: instrumentals, novelties, doo wop, girl groups, soul, teen idols, British Invasion, garage bands and bubblegum, etc. Label honchos Bernie Lowe, Kal Mann and Dave Appell spared no expense, releasing singles with beautiful colour picture sleeves and flooding the market with an unprecedented torrent of LPs.

Cameo-Parkway material has been unavailable for decades, and collectors have waited impatiently for many years for the hits to make their digital debut. A label overview in 2005 and a few subsequent hits packages skimmed the surface. Out this month on Ace are 10 full albums on five CDs, along with a compilation of vocal group classics. The floodgates are now open, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Who can fathom why Cameo-Parkway’s flagship star Chubby Checker is so derided by the revisionist historians that make up the rock establishment? ‘It’s Pony Time’ and ‘Let’s Twist Again’, both bestsellers in 1961, kept dance floors hopping with the Hully Gully, the Mess Around, the Mashed Potato and the Stroll. Chubby made life fun in the early 60s, and who, besides the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee, can ask for more?

An exclusive compilation drawn from Conway's early years, before his country stardom which includes the original version of the worldwide mega-hit 'It's Only Make Believe'! A companion to Bear Family's top-selling 'Conway Twitty Rocks'! -- The statistic books rank Conway Twitty among the Top 5 country artists of all time, but before he was a country singer, he was a rock 'n' roll balladeer. One of the best, in fact. This exclusive compilation is drawn from his recordings for Sun, Mercury, and MGM Records between 1956 and 1963, and includes his original version of one of the greatest power ballads of all time, 'It's Only Make Believe'. It also includes 'Lonely Blue Boy', a song originally written for Elvis, as well as 'Is A Bluebird Blue', the first hit by the great soul songwriter, Dan Penn. Mixed in among Conway's originals are stellar versions of classic songs like 'You'll Never Walk Alone', 'You Win Again', 'C'Est Si Bon', and 'What Am I Living For'. -- Country fans need to explore where Conway found his way with a song, and this is the compilation that shows how and where he developed his unique style. -- Rock 'n' roll fans need this for their quieter moments. And fans of great singing need this compilation to discover why Conway Twitty was called 'The Best Friend A Song Ever Had.'

Hear two unissued 1950s acetates! Contains bonus tracks of songs written by Don Woody for Brenda Lee and Billy Eustis! Features the incredible guitar solos of Grady Martin! Includes You're Barking Up The Wrong Tree, one of the greatest original rockers and one of the foremost songs of the rockabilly revival years! Hear these songs live when Don appears at Hemsby, England, May 2010! Don says, -The fans seem to like the sound effects and that's partly what's kept the songs so popular all these years. They help me out now when I sing 'You're Barking Up The Wrong Tree' by doing the 'barking'.- -- This CD collects together all the commercial recordings and surviving demos of a man who has had two brief but entertaining careers in rock 'n' roll. In the 1950s DonWoody was a DJ who wrote some distinctively good songs. He penned Brenda Lee's first hit. Then Decca persuaded him to have a shot at being a rockabilly singer himself. During the 1970s rockabilly revival he was 'rediscovered' and recently he has started performing again. -- The CD booklet by Martin Hawkins tells the fascinating story of DonWoody, with unpublished interviews and rare photographs

Eddie Cochran - C'mon Everybody 2CD
Although only 21 years of age when he died (in a car smash in April 1960), Eddie Cochran was one of the most important artists of the R&R era - most notably as an inventive, influential guitarist.

Like Buddy Holly, who died a year earlier, Eddie was one of the first Rock & Rollers to experiment in the studio with overdubbing techniques, and he was also active as a writer, producer, arranger and session musician. Also like Holly, Cochran wrote many of his own hits, including such pivotal R&R anthems as 'Twenty Flight Rock', 'Summertime Blues', 'C'mon Everybody', 'Somethin' Else', 'Three Steps To Heaven', and 'My Way'. Alongside his celebrated hits are many collectors' rarities together with alternate takes and demos.

This unique compilation spanning a massive 64 tracks traces Eddie's career from a couple of his earliest, mid-50s C&W sides through to his all-too brief career as a R&R icon

Eddie Cochran - Eddie Rocks
This set is the first to include all of Eddie's solo 'rockin'' sides. -- It includes all the rockin' tracks from his 1957 LP 'Singin' To My Baby'. -- It includes less familiar tracks such as Completely Sweet and Stockings And Shoes -- Eddie Cochran needs no introduction to rock 'n' roll fans - he was one of the original architects of rock 'n' roll, and he has been reissued extensively since his tragic death in April 1960. This compilation, however, is the first to compile all of Eddie's solo 'rockin' tracks in one place - without the usual mishmash of hillbilly tunes, instrumentals, and ballads. Quite simply, this CD rocks from start to finish! -- From Eddie's first rock 'n' roll solo recordings in early 1956 to his last recording session in January 1960, you'll hear such treasures as the original, undubbed versions of Skinny Jim, Twenty Flight Rock, Blue Suede Shoes, and Long Tall Sally. This compilation also includes all of the rocking tracks from Eddie's 1957 LP Album 'Singin' To My Baby' such as the less familiar Completely Sweet and Stockings And Shoes. The pounding hits from Summertime Blues and C'mon Everybody to Somethin' Else are all here too. Of course you will hear posthumously released classics such as Nervous Breakdown, Let's Get Together, My Way, Teenage Heaven and Ah, Pretty Girl which is the rarer version with Eddie providing the guitar overdub. The closing number is the classic Cut Across Shorty, heard here at its original speed instead of the oft heard released speeded up recording. -- All in all even if you've heard these tracks before, this compilation is worth having to blast at your next backyard party. And if this is your introduction to the great music of Eddie Cochran, prepare to have your mind blown - Eddie Cochran rocks!

Ella Mae Morse - Ella Rocks
(1-CD DigiPac with 52-Page Booklet, 34 tracks. Playing time: 84:33). - 'What is my type of song ' Ella Mae Morse once asked her mentor, the songwriter, singer and record label owner Johnny Mercer when he told her that a certain song didn't fit her style. He wasn't alone in pigeonholing her. 'Cliffie Stone said, 'You're a country singer.' And Benny Carter said, 'You're a jazz singer.' T-Bone Walker said, 'You're a rock 'n' roll, blues black singer -- that's what you are.' They were all right -- and her versatility was both Morse's greatest asset and her biggest problem. Morse came of age in the Swing Era and her own tastes tended toward blues-tinged swing jazz and torchy ballads, but her breakthrough hit from 1942, the jivey, bluesy novelty Cow Cow Boogie aside, she has ironically been less remembered for her early forays in these styles than for her 1950s stabs at R&B, rock 'n' roll and hillbilly boogie. - This collection gathers many of Morse's most rocking and hard-swinging sides, as compiled by the noted music historian Bill Millar. It runs the gamut, from the song that made Morse a star, Cow Cow Boogie, to covers of classic early '50s R&B and early rock 'n' roll like Money Honey, Have Mercy Baby and Ain't That A Shame. The telling link between these two styles were classic, forward-looking piano and vocal showcases from the early postwar period like The House Of Blue Lights and A Little Further Down The Road A Piece, many of them cut with Freddie Slack, the boogie woogie stylist with whom Morse had originally hit the big time.

Gene "Bo" Davis - Let´s Coast Awhile
This is the first ever compilation of Gene Davis who has laid down some great rockabilly & country tracks plus who led a band that is still spoken about on the west coast of America in almost reverential tones. He
recorded some great boppin hillbilly songs for King Records in the mid 1950s, before he moved to California and started playing rockabilly.

Under the name of Bo Davis he recorded some great rockabilly songs backed by legendary Eddie Cochran. More rocking recordings like
Curfew” , “No Rockin & Rollin” followed and soon he was discovered by Buck Ram to appear with his band in some movies like “Carnival
Rock” and “Rock All Night” under the name of The Blockbusters. The talented singer and guitar player Gene Davis soon became the house
band for the famous LA club The Palomino backing many big names.

His band over the years included several soon to be stars. This album includes all of his rocking sides, some country boppers, some duets
with Chuck Miles, Faron Young, The Collins Kids, Glen Campbell and finishes with his only chart success “"Oh Those Texas Woman"”.

Gene Vincent - Gene Rocks
Another outstanding release in Bear Family's 'Rocks' series, this one features thirty of the greatest rock 'n' roll recordings by the most diehard, dedicated rock 'n' roller of them all. -- Includes all five US hits: Race With The Devil, Bluejean Bop, Lotta Lovin', Dance To The Bop and - one of the -- greatest moments in the history of recorded sound - Be-Bop-A-Lula. -- Cliff Gallup's complex, futuristic lead guitar influenced dozens of major stars including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Dave Edmunds and Albert Lee. -- Comprehensive notes by fan Ian Wallis, author of the best selling 'American Rock 'n' Roll: The UK Tours 1956-72' (Music Mentor Books). -- There are heaps of Gene Vincent compilations. So many, you practically trip over them. This one is different and then some: It's simply the finest concentrated distillation of Gene Vincent's out 'n' out rock 'n' roll tracks you will ever hear. - These magnificent recordings have a febrile, lascivious quality unmatched by any of his competitors. They're nonsense songs about sex, hotrods, frenzied bopping and uncontrollable limbs in red-blue jeans, always epitomizing the hub-cab stealing ne'erdo-well of a dozen high-school exploitation movies. -- There was no singer quite like him. His lean, mean, high-pitched vocals, laced with screams and yelps on a cushion of fluttery echo, provided the blueprint for every late-blooming rockabilly band and beat-group singer, John Lennon included. And his guitarists were equally radical: Cliff Gallup, the Blue Caps spark-plug, became a huge influence on six-string stuntmen the world over. -- Vincent was a strange, self-destructive mess of a man whose road was always rocky. He drank to excess, limped with a rotting leg, fathered the rock 'n' roll life style and died at 36. But no one has made better rock 'n' roll music before or since.

NEW HAYDEN THOMPSON CD NOW AVAILABLE. FIRST 600 COPIES COMES WITH 5 TRACK MINICD. IT INCLUDES LIVE RECORDINGS . HAYDEN THOMPSON AND THE BARNSHAKERS !

He did it again. Hayden Thompson cut yet another superlative record in Finland.
Bluelight Records repeats the miracle by honoring Thompson with a superb production
highlighting the expressive voice and impeccable style of this charismatic
performer.

The follow-up to the acclaimed 2007 country album “Hayden Thompson” digs deep into
the rockabilly roots of the performer. With his Finnish dream team, the Bluelight
Records All Stars lead by Olli Haavisto, Thompson takes us back to the 50’s and 60’s
with inborn poise and fresh approach. Recorded in Petrax, a top trim studio built in
an old cowhouse, this thrilling compilation of carefully selected and intuitively
arranged rarities and favorites alike offers a heartfelt portrait of a Southern
country boy in the Windy City.

For a Hayden Thompson connoisseur this album holds many treats: “Cheese & Crackers”,
a blues humoresque originally cut by Roscoe Gordon for Sun Records in 1957, is now
recorded by the Great Storyteller himself for the first time. The catchy, melancholy
rumba “Watcha Gonna Do”, also written by Hayden, will most certainly pack the dance
floor. The other revision on the album, Hayden’s signature song “Love My Baby” (by
Junior Parker), obtained a slightly darker finish than the early Sun Records
recording by Hayden in 1957, mainly due to the ample baritone rhythm guitar.

The easy-access presentation of the first Cash choice, “Without Love”, sets an
intriguing contrast to the stark jeremiad of the lyrics, whereas the happy rolling
piano boogie of “Hey Porter” makes the Tennessee train ride a pleasure indeed. A
tireless locomotive consisting of the guitar, drums and the slap bass drives the
other railroad song, the bluesy “Long Black Train”, written by Thompson’s label mate
Conway Twitty. Piano joins the engine again for the steaming Brook Benton cover
“Hurtin’ Inside” and the exhilarating cowboy shuffle “Pretty Lou”.

“Honey ‘Cause I Love You” from the Carl Perkins songbook, and the Bob Luman ballad
“Still Loving You”, exhibit Hayden Thompson’s nuance palette from the gentler side,
and the Elvis standard “You’re A Heartbreaker” receives a surprisingly endearing
quality with only two nylon-string acoustic guitars carrying Hayden’s velvety,
whispering voice.

Residing with his wife Georgia in the Chicago area, but born in Booneville,
Mississippi in 1938, Hayden Thompson is one of the original rockabilly cats who
recorded for the legendary Sun Records label in the mid 1950’s. The revival of the
genre brought him back to music, and since 1984 he has continued to periodically
tour Europe and Japan, as well as to perform in the U.S. The Finnish recordings
clearly demonstrate his voice is as strong as ever, hence the playful nickname “Iron
Hayden” given by the band.

As you can easily detect, we don’t only have a brilliant vocalist accompanied by
skilful players here, but a true organic combo with genuine energy and drive, as
well as a visionary production team. It is safe to say that the Helsinki – Chicago
alliance will continue.

Jimmy Donley - The Shape You Left Me In
Never before on CD!A tragic story matched only by the fabulous swamp pop music!Wrote several of Fats Domino's classic records!Contains every title, issued and unissued, recorded 1957 - 1960 by the legendary Jimmy Donley, plus multiple takes of previously known singles.Includes an extensive, newly researched biography, discography and many never seen pictures from Jimmy's sister.Jimmy Donley has become a cult figure, his fame spreading well beyond the boundaries of Louisiana swamp pop and rockabilly. A prolific songwriter - compared by some to Hank Williams - Donley never enjoyed success with his own recordings. Much of his legacy rests on the unlikely musical and personal bond he forged with Fats Domino, who recorded more than half a dozen of his songs. Music aside, the details of Jimmy Donley's tragic life have made him one of the most notorious figures of his era. He is remembered today for the extreme and incessant violence in his life. Prior to his suicide in 1963, Donley's aggression was freely directed at his numerous wives, girlfriends, as well as casual patrons in the Gulf Coast bars where he performed. You didn't want to come near him when he was drinking, recalls Donley's sister. The trouble was, Jimmy Donley drank nearly all the time.--Donley's music has never been reissued with the care and attention to detail it deserves. Bear Family remedies all that with the release of this CD, featuring an extensive bio based on new interview material by Hank Davis, a generous collection of Donley's classic sides for Decca Nashville, as well as a special glimpse at the behind-the-scenes events at one of Donley's recording sessions. It's all here: every title Donley recorded between 1957 and 1960, including multiple takes and previously unissued material. This set offers the best available look into the life and music of one of the Deep South's legendary figures.

John Zacherle - Monster Mash / Scary Tales
Operating out of Philadelphia, Cameo-Parkway was among the most successful independent record companies of the early 1960s, turning out a veritable production line of teen-friendly singles by artists such as Chubby Checker, the Orlons, the Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp and Bobby Rydell. This month sees the release on Ace of the latest batch of collections from the vaults of Cameo and sister logo Parkway in the shape of twofers from Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells and self-appointed “Cool Ghoul” John Zacherle.

John Sebastian did the notes for the John Zacherle set. Yep, that John Sebastian, he of the Lovin’ Spoonful. It seems he was a bit of a Boris Karloff fan, which is how he first became aware of John Zacherle, who hosted re-runs of old horror movies on WCAU-TV out of Philadelphia in the late 1950s. The craze for scary movies spread to the record biz, which led to Zacherle reaching #6 with ‘Dinner With Drac’ in 1958. (OK, we’re a bit late for Hallowe’en with this release, but hey, there’s always next year.)

Includes two early '60s classics, 'You're Sixteen' (later revived by Ringo Starr) and 'Dreamin''. Fabulous early '60s Los Angeles pop, produced by the legendary Snuff Garrett. -- These days, Johnny Burnette is justly renowned as one of the all-time wildest rockabillies, who made maybe the greatest-ever rockabilly recordings. But there was another side to Johnny Burnette. After his rockabilly singles failed, he moved to Los Angeles, wrote songs for Ricky Nelson, and soon became a teen idol in his own right. This set includes his five Hot 100 entries from the early '60s, all produced by the legendary Snuff Garrett with the cream of the Los Angeles session men, plus rarities, obscurities, and simply great performances. In addition to his own fine songs and big hits, this compilation includes classic songs like 'My Special Angel', 'Please Help Me I'm Falling', 'Roses Are Red', 'Moody River', and many others. Little Richard - Here's Little Richard
It's impossible to over-emphasise the impact Little Richard and the music on his first two albums for Specialty Records from March 1957 and July 1958 had on the future sound of R&B, rock and soul. “Here's Little Richard” and “Little Richard Volume 2” have just about every classic Little Richard side on them. This is the music that influenced and paved the way for the hundreds of beat groups of the 60's, and coupled with the larger-than-life anarchic, excessive and erratic personality of Little Richard himself, is the bedrock spirit of everything that followed in rock’n’roll, its sound, its image and its energy. Just count the tracks from these albums that got cover versions: The Beatles, Elvis, Otis, Stones, Springsteen and innumerable others recorded and performed these songs for years and years to come. Otis Redding and James Brown, arguably the two biggest male soul stars the world ever saw, both wore their Richard influence as a medal of honour and Michael Jackson and Prince have long been acknowledged as the carriers of Richard's flaming, otherworldly and showmanistic torch.

This is Rock’n’Roll in it's purest form. The raw musical power contained here has, quite simply never been surpassed, they still compel you to shout and dance and put into their original context of the 1950s they are nothing less than astonishing, because as much as Elvis shook up the world, ultimately he was able to be white, safe and accessible. Not so with Little Richard who remained and remains a free spirit, an enigma and a unique being.

Those first two albums are a hard, verging on impossible, act to follow. “Little Richard Volume 2” and the third album, “The Fabulous Little Richard” were both released after Richard had left Specialty in late 1957 and temporarily retired from recording rock’n’roll for the first time. Whereas all but one of the tracks on Volume 2 (‘By The Light Of The Silvery Moon’) had been issued on US 45 before, “The Fabulous” released in 1959, was put together from early recordings that didn't make the first two albums, some of which were recorded before ‘Tutti Frutti’, and recordings that, up until that point had been unheard by the world at large, taken from Richard's last 1950s Specialty session. Some of the earlier recordings were overdubbed with vocals from the Stewart Sisters, perhaps in an attempt to update them in the wake of ex Specialty artist Sam Cooke's pop success, and these overdub versions have come in for some criticism in the past. To be fair, the girl voices are not always entirely welcome. But if you can retune your ears after the full on assault from the first two LP's, “The Fabulous” will reap rewards.

This, really is where it all began.

Little Richard - The Fabulous Little Richard

Marti Brom - Not For Nothin'
GOOFIN RECORDS, in joint venture with RIPSAW RECORDS, will release "NOT FOR NOTHIN‟," a 15 track CD by MARTÍ BROM (www.myspace.com/martirockabil ly), in Europe end of October 2010.

MARTÍ BROM, a performer internationally acclaimed for her hard-driving rockabilly and sultry traditional country vocals, collaborated on the album with premier Washington area musicians and Grammy-winning producer PETER BONTA to create a contender for best roots rock, hardcore country, rock „n‟ roll, rockabilly, Americana album of the decade. According to MARTÍ, however, her goal was more modest - simply to record a DC-themed thank you note for the Washington music community‟s hospitality during her family‟s military tour of duty here.

" NOT FOR NOTHIN´ "

MARTÍ‟s core support consisted of DC mainstays PEDRO SERA on guitar, LOUIE

NEWMYER on bass, and SAUL McCORMACK on drums - with Boogie Man DARYL DAVIS on piano. This energized crew was supplemented with key contributions from Dieselbilly BILL KIRCHEN on guitar and vocals, bluegrass fiddle player TAD MARKS, rockabilly BILLY HANCOCK on guitar, DAVE VAN ALLEN on twangin‟ steel guitar, veteran DEL PUSCHERT on tenor sax, down and dirty CHRIS WATLING on baritone sax, and bluegrass BRYAN SMITH on slappin‟ doghouse bass.

Martí selected all natural ingredients in making this tribute to the current and historical musical resources of the Washington area. Not only was the musical roster home-grown, so was the studio (BIAS), production team, engineer (Grammy Award winner JIM ROBESON). GOOFIN RECORDS also approached the DC label of RIPSAW RECORDS as a partner to ensure 100% DC bona fides.

Songwriters with a D.C. area connection include rockabillies TEX RUBINOWITZ, JANIS MARTIN, and SEAN MENCHER, BILL KIRCHEN and his wife LOUISE, as well as Baltimore‟s honky-tonkin‟ ARTY HILL and Virginia‟s Austin, Texas

transplant and long-time Marti songwriter, TERI JOYCE. MARTÍ also gives her signature spin to tunes popularized by Winchester‟s PATSY CLINE, rhythm and blues hall of famer RUTH BROWN, rockabilly/punk rocker MARTHA HULL, bluegrass hall of famer BILL HARRELL, and legendary Baltimore rocker PAT BROWN.

MYSTERY TRAIN on yksi Suomen vanhimmista, vielä aktiivisista "50's
Rock'n'Roll/rockabilly" - bändeistä, toiminnassa jo vuodesta 1977 asti. Bändi
ammentaa vaikutteita niin rock'n'rollista ja rockabillystä kuin rhythm&bluesistakin,
kuulostaen kuitenkin aina MYSTERY TRAIN:ilta ja tuoden oman soundinsa myös
lainabiiseihin.

Nimensä MYSTERY TRAIN nappasi Elviksen biisistä, kun bändin ensimmäistä levyä oltiin
julkaisemassa vuonna 1980.

Kesällä 2010 bändin "Keep Up the Beat" -biisi "ENJOY THIS BOOGIE!" -albumilta
tullaan kuulemaan amerikkalaisen kokoillan elokuvan "DEUCE OF SPADES" avausraitana.
"DEUCE OF SPADES" on herättänyt runsaasti huomiota ympäri maailmaa jo ennen
ilmestymistään ja siitä povataankin hot rod -teemansa takia uutta American
Graffitti:a!
