| Jimmy Spellman - Doggonit 40-page booklet, 28 tracks. Playing time approx. 58 minutes. - For the first time all of Spellman's Viv, Dot, Vik, Rev, and Redstart recordings in one package, with Al Casey featured on guitar. As usual, Bear Family goes all out with the best high quality visual graphics with Digipac packaging and high end digital sound by original Audio Recorders engineer Jack Miller. Includes unreleased tracks, plus six song demos. Extensive liner notes by Johnny Vallis and Arizona Music historian John Dixon. -- On September 20, 2004, Jimmy Spellman was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Best known for his rockin' 'Doggonit' on Dot and series of primitive country classics cut for Lee Hazlewood's Viv label, this cult favorite has also been honored by the Madison Square Garden Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside such notable local talents Duane Eddy, Jimmy Dell, Sanford Clark, Al Casey, Chuck Mayfield, Wayne Newton and Loy Clingman. -- Despite a central role in Phoenix, Arizona's fertile rockabilly scene of the 1950s, Jimmy Spellman's musical career has never been examined in-depth. That changes with Bear Family's comprehensive package, collecting for the first time all of Spellman's well-regarded Viv, Dot, Vik, Rev and Redstart recordings. Spellman was the first artist chosen to record for Hazlewood's Viv Records imprint in 1955. Before hitmakers Sanford Clark and Duane Eddy, Hazlewood spent more time and money on Spellman as the conduit for his early compositions. In his short aix years of recording (1955-1960), Spellman covers the Country, Rock and Pop styles of music with class. |

| Joe Barry - A Fool To Care: Classic Recordings 1960-1977 2CD t may surprise some readers to learn that many musicians from South Louisiana do not like their music to be categorised as swamp pop (a term coined originally by music writer Bill Millar). For the rest of us, it feels like the perfect way to describe the rolling rhythms and unique vocals that define the great records which came out of the area between the latter 1950s and the mid-60s. Whether he would have liked to be defined by said term or not, Louisiana’s Joe Barry is one of the greatest exponents of the genre, and the recordings that he made between 1959 and 1964 in particular embrace many of its most treasured moments. Joe only charted nationally a couple of times, his greatest hit being the wonderfully languid revival of hillbilly standard ‘I’m A Fool To Care’, which many thought was the work of Fats Domino until they saw Joe on TV or in photos. But his lengthy career amounted to more than a couple of hit 45s. This new 2CD set, named after Joe’s career record, compiles almost 40 sides from Joe’s first period of recording, plus the dozen tracks cut during his brief comeback of the mid-1970s – almost all of them taped under the supervision of his long-time producer Huey Meaux. To ensure that “I’m A Fool To Care” would be the definitive collection of Joe’s collaborations with Meaux, Alec Palao and I went back to the producer’s original tapes and re-copied every single one in what turned out to be something of a marathon session inHoustonlast March. Everything here is mastered from those new transfers, with the exception of two Sho-Biz sides, which had to be transferred from a 45 as no tape seems to have survived. Alec was also able to mix a few of the tracks (some previously unreleased) into true stereo for the first time, from a handful of surviving Cosimo’s multi-tracks. We have not repeated the mistakes of some previous compilations, which included tracks not sung by Joe. Although there have been previous anthologies of his work released during the last 15 years, we guarantee than none of them will offer anything like the level of audio excellence this one does. With an extensive essay based around an interview conducted by John Broven in the late 70s, and a booklet that contains lots or rare images and label shots of almost every 45 featured on the collection, this 2CD set will be the perfect way to remember this beloved exponent of South Louisiana R&B … or swamp pop, if you don’t happen to be from down that way. | John Zacherle - Monster Mash / Scary Tales Operating out of Philadelphia, Cameo-Parkway was among the most successful independent record companies of the early 1960s, turning out a veritable production line of teen-friendly singles by artists such as Chubby Checker, the Orlons, the Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp and Bobby Rydell. This month sees the release on Ace of the latest batch of collections from the vaults of Cameo and sister logo Parkway in the shape of twofers from Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells and self-appointed “Cool Ghoul” John Zacherle. John Sebastian did the notes for the John Zacherle set. Yep, that John Sebastian, he of the Lovin’ Spoonful. It seems he was a bit of a Boris Karloff fan, which is how he first became aware of John Zacherle, who hosted re-runs of old horror movies on WCAU-TV out of Philadelphia in the late 1950s. The craze for scary movies spread to the record biz, which led to Zacherle reaching #6 with ‘Dinner With Drac’ in 1958. (OK, we’re a bit late for Hallowe’en with this release, but hey, there’s always next year.) By Mick Patrick (ACE Records) |

| Johnny Burnette - Ballads Of Johnny Burnette 1-CD DigiPac - four panel - mit 36-page booklet. 30 tracks. Playing time: 72:48) -- The softer side of a rock 'n' roll god! Includes two early '60s classics, 'You're Sixteen' (later revived by Ringo Starr) and 'Dreamin''. Fabulous early '60s Los Angeles pop, produced by the legendary Snuff Garrett. -- These days, Johnny Burnette is justly renowned as one of the all-time wildest rockabillies, who made maybe the greatest-ever rockabilly recordings. But there was another side to Johnny Burnette. After his rockabilly singles failed, he moved to Los Angeles, wrote songs for Ricky Nelson, and soon became a teen idol in his own right. This set includes his five Hot 100 entries from the early '60s, all produced by the legendary Snuff Garrett with the cream of the Los Angeles session men, plus rarities, obscurities, and simply great performances. In addition to his own fine songs and big hits, this compilation includes classic songs like 'My Special Angel', 'Please Help Me I'm Falling', 'Roses Are Red', 'Moody River', and many others. There's a bonus in the shape of 'Clown Shoes', a neglected classic written by James Marcus Smith, who would later find fame in England as P. J. Proby. -- Johnny Burnette died in a boating accident in 1964. He'd led a short, often wild, life, but this is the other side of his considerable legacy. |

| Johnny Horton - I'm A Fishin' Man DVD with 24-page booklet, b&w, NTSC, regional code: 0, 28 tracks, playing time approx. 71 mns. Never before seen performances by Johnny Horton. Rare recordings from collection of Jerry Hope. Ozark Jubilee Shows from the collection of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. A rare live concert. When Bear Family began work on the Johnny Horton LP box sets back in the mid-1980s, just two videos traded hands among collectors: a grainy copy of 'I'm A Fishin' Man' and an 'Ed Sullivan Show' appearance. Now we have an embarrassment of riches. Finally, we see why Horton was, as his contemporaries said, a natural television performer. Amiable, good-looking, and breezily confident, he was ideal for what was then the new medium of television. Just the kind of guy you'd want to bring into your living room. This DVD collects most of the known videotaped performances of Johnny Horton from very early in his career until just a few weeks before he was killed. There are 25 filmed performances and three bonus audio performances spanning the years from 1953 until 1960. He not only sings his biggest hits, 'North To Alaska', 'Johnny Reb', 'Sal's Got A Sugar Lip', 'Sink The Bismarck' and of course 'The Battle Of New Orleans', but he also performs songs that won't be as familiar to collectors, like 'Electrified Donkey', 'Be Honest With Me' (as part of a trio with Eddy Arnold and Molly Bee), and 'I'm A Fishing Man'. Even though there are no published interviews with Johnny Horton, on this DVD he talks with the hosts of the Ozark Jubilee show Red Foley, Bobby Lord, and Eddy Arnold. An essential complement to Bear Family's definitive history of Johnny Horton's recordings! A NOTE ON FILM QUALITY: Bear Family has always made a sustained commitment to quality. This DVD was sourced from original films and kinescopes, now fifty or sixty years old. Some, especially those sourced from 'Jubilee USA' kinescopes, are not as clear as we would have liked, but they are the only known copies. We feel that their historic value outweighs the technical imperfections. |
