| Vido Musso - Swingin'st Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, Harry James, Woody Herman, Bunny Berigan, Tommy Dorsey and Stan Kenton: the list sounds like the honour roll of big band leaders in the 30s and 40s. But it's just a selection of the bands for which tenor sax man Vido Musso played during his twenty year plus recording career. Born in Sicily, Vido moved to the US when his family emigrated in 1920. After a spell in Detroit, the sax man, intent on a musical future, headed to the West Coast to in the early 30s and started to play with local bands. Vido's first breakthrough came with the chance to join the Benny Goodman Orchestra in 1936. His time with the Goodman Orchestra included the famous recording of Sing, Sing, Sing. It was a tune he was to return to when Vido recorded with a smaller swing group in the early to mid 50s for Modern Records. In the period 1937 to the end of the second world war Vido performed and recorded prolifically with the big bands mentioned above. The immediate post-war period saw him start a distinguished association with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. With them he recorded the hit versions of Intermission Riff and Come Back To Sorrento in his distinctive style. These favourites remained in his repertoire and were to feature on the albums he recorded for Modern and Crown Records in the early to mid-50s. THE SWINGIN'ST collects together most of his recorded work at Modern. Playing with Maynard Ferguson on trumpet and Willard McDaniel on piano, his first releases were on the RPM label, followed with outings on the new Crown singles label. An album "The Swingin'st" followed, initially on the Modern label but then re-issued as one of the first Crown LPs. The album included some of the initial singles (sometimes cunningly re-titled) as well as other material. Graced with an avant garde graphical design, it remains a sought-after album with good copies going for more than $100. Vido followed up with a second Crown album in 1957, this time with a more R&B-oriented line-up including organ. Entitled "Teenage Dance Party", it included an spirited, extended version of Bill Doggett's Honky Tonk as well as his re-workings of the Kenton favourites Intermission Riff and Come Back To Sorrento. This compilation includes the full content of both albums, plus three of the singles sides not featured on the album. There is more Vido material in the Modern vaults but there simply wasn't room for it on this compilation. The last two tracks are done in the furious style employed at the Gene Norman Just Jazz concerts Vido had been recorded at the Shrine Auditorium in 1947 along with Wardell Gray and Howard McGhee and attempted to re-create that feeling on these releases from 1953. So from amongst the 227 recording sessions that Vido Musso is credited with in Tom Lord's Jazz Discography, here is the best of the Modern Records period of the man they called The Swingin'st. | Gene Phillips And His Rhythm Aces - Drinkin' & Stinkin' More great late 40s and early 50s Louis Jordan-style jump'n'jive from one of Modern's original R&B stars. When Ray Topping assembled the first Ace CD compilation of Gene Phillips' Modern recordings a few years ago, he promised that a second volume would eventually be forthcoming. It's taken us a couple of years to make good on that promise - some of the acetates for repertoire that Ray didn't use were heavily worn or damaged in some way, and the Sound Mastering audio geniuses have had to devote long (if ultimately rewarding) hours to their restoration. But on the understanding that good things always come to those who wait, we're delighted at last to bring forth - as a valuable addition to our fast-expanding 10-inch series - Drinkin' And Stinkin', a most worthy companion to 1999's Singing The Blues (CDCHD 746). Gene Phillips was one of the first important artists to be signed by the fledgling Modern Music Company back in 1946, and probably ranks as the label's second-most important early signing behind Hadda Brooks. Even though he was only signed to the label as an artist for 3-4 years, he enjoyed a lengthy subsequent association with the Bihari brothers' West Coast R&B indie as a sideman. (It's recently been established that he played on the Oscar McLollie sessions from 1955, and indeed he may well have continued his relationship with Modern beyond then...) This CD, of course, deals with Gene's recordings under his own name. And what recordings they are! Despite an obvious debt to the oeuvre of R&B megastar Louis Jordan - and, let's face it, if your music is going to owe anything to somebody else's, Mr Jordan's is not the worst repertoire in the world to be indebted to - they are, without exception, fabulous examples of proto-R&B as it was beginning to shake the shackles of jazz, and to emerge as a valid music form in its own right. Just a few years after these sides were recorded, the Treniers made a fine record called It Rocks! It Rolls! It Swings! The music of Gene Phillips and his Rhythm Aces was, and still is, tailor-made to suit such a description... In selecting the repertoire for this set, I re-listened to every surviving take on these masters and chose those I felt were the best, regardless of whether or not the takes in question were those originally designated as the "master" by Jules Bihari. Since I've become more deeply involved in the Modern reissue programme I've realised that the Bihari-approved take was, in many case, merely the last complete one of the session in question, rather than the best one, and that there were often far better takes lurking further to the front of any given acetate or tape. In presenting these in preference to a "master" I'm certainly not trying to second-guess the Bihari brothers - I'm merely attempting to give the listener (and, hopefully, the buyer!) the best possible representation of this tremendously underrated R&B pioneer. More than half of these performances have never been reissued in any format, and 8 of the takes I've unearthed for your listening pleasure have never been issued at all! There are many treats here, from the adrenaline-fuelled R&B bounce of Boogie Everywhere, Royal Boogie and 304 Boogie (the latter titled by Mr Topping - in respect of the fact that its matrix number is MM 304!) to the witty Jordanesque blues of Stinkin' Drunk (the lyric of which provides our title here), Women Women Women and a personal favourite, Getting Down Wrong. There are also two rare opportunities to hear Gene live, coming to you from Frank Bull and Gene Norman's 1951 "Blues Jamboree". Despite the fact that these performances were severely truncated for issue (and, sadly, no original unedited acetate survives) they demonstrate what a great thing a Gene Phillips gig must have been back in the day. The 19 tracks here represent the balance of Gene's Modern/RPM catalogue, and their reissue in the 10 inch series means that at least one take of everything he recorded for the Biharis as a bandleader is now available on an Ace CD. And well might they be, for this is great music from beginning to end, and music that the passage of more than half a century has done nothing to impair its vivacity of. Gene Phillips' career as a leader may have been over long before the birth of rock'n'roll, but these stupendous recordings show that, as a vocalist and musician, he has as much claim to have been in on R&R's midwifery as any of his more famous contemporaries. by Tony Rounce (Ace Records) |

| Maya Angelou - Miss Calypso Maya Angelou is known primarily (and deservedly) as a poet, activist and best-selling author, delivering the poem "In the Pulse of the Morning" as part of President Bill Clinton's inauguration ceremonies. She is far less known for her early career as a singer. In 1957, at the age of 27, she made her only sung album to date, Miss Calypso, which consisted of quite respectable calypso songs with pop and world music influences. Very much in line with Harry Belafonte's recordings of this period, and no doubt made with the same lightly subversive civil rights agenda, the album features sparse backing from guitarist Tommy Tedesco ( Top L.A. session musician of the '50s and '60s, best known as a Phil Spector collaborator) and Al Bello (on congos, bongos, and drums), as well as Miss Angelou's surprisingly effective singing voice. Miss Angelou also wrote half the songs on the album. The kitsch masterpiece of a cover features Miss Angelou draped in a slip of a red dress, gyrating next to a fire in the middle of a fake jungle scene. Altogether an unusual sidelight on the work of a great and important literary figure, and let's not forget, a damn fine record too! |
