Eartha Kitt & Shorty Rogers - St. Louis Blues
32-page booklet, 12 tracks. Playing time approx. 35 minutes. -- The 'Velvet Lounge' is a remarkable series of re-releases dedicated to music that is always elegant and entertaining - and sometimes even exotic. The series is a comfortable and welcoming home for treasures from the fabulous Fifties and the strange Sixties. It is a mark of quality placed on music we've rediscovered from long ago and far away, from a time and place between Rock and Beat ecstasy and psychedelic populism. -- This newest addition to the Bear Family contains music that comes straight from the archives of both large and small record companies, and is re-mastered to Bear Family's excellent quality, normally as a direct digitalisation of a master-tape but always with the best possible sound. What you hear is what you get, and the listener is tempted in by this music, asked to relax and savour the music, while maybe putting up their feet and slowly stirring a long drink. -- And who you hear is important; the artists' names alone make for a formidable series. Eartha Kitt, 'the most exciting woman in the world' according to Orson Welles, does her purring 'thang' on the album 'St. Louis Blues', alongside legendary West-Coast-trumpeter Milton 'Shorty' Rogers and an extravagantly exciting and highly entertaining blues program. And then on the album 'Personalities' another trumpeter Al 'Jumbo' Hirt dedicates himself to a sort of 'symbolization in sound' of sex-bomb Ann Margret, some twenty years his junior, on songs like My Baby Just Cares For Me or Baby, It's Cold Outside. Despite numerical evidence to the contrary, 'jazz' was not a four letter word back then, and even 'entertainment' did not smell funny, yet. The motto was 'anything goes' rather than 'is that allowed ' This artistic free-for-all and high quality craftsmanship produced songs that had every right to be called 'standards'. Artist-arrangers like Marty Paich or Juan Esquivel, for instance, not only showcased the abilities of some of the best studio musicians of their time, but also the songwriters. -- The 'Velvet Lounge' engages more than the ears, though. You'll need your stomach muscles, at least those involved in extensive laughter. On 'What were they thinking ' an overdue compilation with all kinds of 'odd couples', pleasure becomes a principle and the absurd gets to be ordinary. Country stars meet Exotica heroes or Easy Listening troubadours. Pop crooners like Perry Como are coupled with the Sons Of The Pioneers, and even Lotte Lenya, Kurt Weill's wife, and Bertolt Brecht's favorite mime, gets to share some hilarious studio-time with the sensational Louis Armstrong. -- Because the 'Velvet Lounge' series comes under the Bear Family banner, it is a given that the graphic design is perfectly fitting and fittingly perfect, featuring rare original photographs, exact discographies, and extensive liner notes. Everything about this series has a touch of exuberance and luxury. Everyone from the collecting specialist to the cultural crusader can feel most welcome and at home in this 'Velvet Lounge'.

Jackie DeShannon - Come And Get me - The Complete LIberty And Imperial Singles
Ace’s first volume of Jackie DeShannon’s Liberty and Imperial singles left her at the end of 1963. The same girl who performed a blistering set of folk and blues at LA’s Ash Grove venue had, a few weeks later, effortlessly climbed the Wall of Sound with Jack Nitzsche to produce one of the generation’s great pop records, ‘When You Walk In The Room’.

1964 saw Jackie composing more quality pop with new writing partner Randy Newman, then touring the States as specially requested support act to the Beatles hollering out ‘Shout’ to the screaming fans, and finishing the year in England exploring the boundaries of rock and folk with Jimmy Page.

1965 started gloriously with Jackie’s breathtaking recording of Bacharach and David’s homage to world peace ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’. She co-starred with Bobby Vee in the teen movie C’mon Let’s Live A Little, laid down a riveting and still unreleased demo album of her own songs in the folk style, toured on the Caravan of Stars with the Drifters and Peter and Gordon, and took a break to study at the renowned Chouinard Art Institute.

In 1966 she recorded with the Byrds, released the sophisticated album “Are You Ready For This?” and signed a new recording and songwriting contract with Liberty.

This second volume of Jackie’s collected 45s leaves her at the start of 1967, when she laid down two ultra smooth and classy recordings of major film themes.

I’ve had the enormous pleasure of meeting Jackie a couple of times. Always excited, always enthusiastic, her conversation moves from spot-on analysis of the latest singers and bands, to recollections of every aspect of her life, to the thrill and tension of live performance.

Jackie DeShannon’s unwillingness to be typecast or pinned down to a single style has been the backbone of her splendid career and the reason why her loyal band of admirers – and all of those who have caught up with her over the years – find her performances, her songwriting and her recordings, a constant source of pleasure. Explore “Come And Get Me” at your leisure, you won’t be let down, you’ll smile with recognition and open your eyes wide at the unexpected, but most of all you’ll spend an hour and a bit with a young woman fully engaged in her career of making music of the highest quality.

Lesley Gore - Magic Colors - The Lost Album With Bonus Tracks 1967-1969
The superb lost sequel to the New Jersey pop icon’s “California Nights” album, with 15 extra tracks from the same period. Production and orchestrations by maestros Bob Crewe, Jack Nitzsche, Gamble & Huff, Steve Douglas, Herb Bernstein, Paul Leka, Thom Bell et al.

New York City, 1981. An audience of New Wave hipsters (and me) has gathered for a screening of The TAMI Show, arguably (not really) the all-time greatest filmed rock concert. When Lesley Gore is introduced, snickers and catcalls resound. What’s this white-bread princess doing on a show with James Brown, Marvin Gaye and the Stones? Minutes later her powerful, intense performance of ‘You Don’t Own Me’ results in a standing ovation.

Lesley Gore has always gotten a bum rap. After scoring a #1 on her first effort, the New Jersey teenager reeled off an impressive string of Quincy Jones-produced Brill Building hits while simultaneously pursuing her college education. After the hits subsided and Jones moved on, Lesley enjoyed a 1967 chart comeback with a couple of Bob Crewe productions that placed her squarely in the genre now fondly called Sunshine Pop.

The comeback was short-lived, however, and Mercury Records shelved a planned album entitled “Magic Colors”. The world was deprived of a veritable Sunshine Pop masterpiece. Better late than never, Ace is proud to present “Magic Colors” in all its shimmering, swirling glory. The proposed LP was mostly produced by Steve Douglas, whose Wrecking Crew cohorts outdo themselves on the elaborately layered tracks.

From the Neil Sedaka-penned title song to a vibrant cover of the Tokens’ Mann-Weil hit ‘It’s A Happening World’ and the inexplicably low-charting single ‘Brink Of Disaster’, the overall effect of “Magic Colors” is dazzling in its sophistication and complexity. Lesley and her brother Michael contribute a pair of songs and Teddy Randazzo’s beautiful ‘You Sent Me Silver Bells’ is a definite highlight, as is a cover of ‘To Sir With Love’ utilising the third verse that Lulu only sang in the movie. Lesley also nails the Rascals’ ‘How Can I Be Sure’ with understated sincerity. In the parlance of 1967, “Magic Colors” is one groovy album.

15 bonus tracks present a series of singles released in 1968 and 1969. The stars didn’t align to produce any hits despite valiant efforts by an array of crack tunesmiths and ace producers. Three tracks crafted by Gamble and Huff are pop/soul gems, and there’s a brilliant cover of Dusty’s ‘All Cried Out’ which went unreleased at the time. It’s hard to fathom why Lesley’s imaginative medley of ’98.6’ and ‘Lazy Day” wasn’t a hit, but easier to understand what went wrong with ‘Wedding Bell Blues’, which was pipped at the post by the 5th Dimension.

Thus ended Lesley Gore’s Mercury tenure. The future would hold more great music, more songwriting (she and her brother shared a 1980 Best Song Oscar nomination) and a highly successful performing career that endures to this day, all on her own terms.

New York City, 2011. A Broadway musical travesty about the Shirelles (but not even close) portrays Lesley for comic relief, simpering and snivelling through ‘It’s My Party’ before running offstage in tears. The bum rap continues.

“Magic Colors” presents a much more realistic snapshot of the multi-faceted artist that is Lesley Gore.

Louis Prima with Sam Butera & Keely Smith - Jump, Jive An' Wail
DigiPac (4-plated) with 36-page booklet, 30 tracksPlaying time approx. 87 minutes. - David Lee Roth copied the Louis Prima arrangement of 'Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody' while Brian Setzer won a Grammy for his version of 'Jump, Jive An' Wail'. The amazing originals are here. Also contains Prima's big hits with the succulent Keely Smith: 'That Old Black Magic' and 'I've Got You Under My Skin' are the epitome of Las Vegas cool. Plus a clutch of lethal tenor-man Sam Butera's rock 'n' roll vocals including 'Ten Little Women' and the full kilter 'Bim Bam'. All told, there's no better collection of Louis Prima's seriously frantic fusion of rock 'n' roll, Dixieland and Neopolitan mayhem. Fans will also appreciate the generous number of tracks and the booklet's numerous photos. --Louis Prima can't be pigeon-holed. Jump blues, vaudeville, Dixieland jazz, Sicilian boogie, swing and flat-out rock 'n' roll; they were all reflected in the riotous lounge act which he pioneered if not invented. Despite his age (born 1910) and a recording career which spanned four decades, Prima understood rock 'n' roll. 'It's got that beat' he said. 'There's nothing, but nothing, wrong with rock 'n' roll'. -- This collection doesn't overlook his jazz-inflected pop hits with Keely Smith but it relies primarily on his very best recordings for Capitol, those which capture the exalted frenzy of his live show and the rumbustious spirit of '50s rock 'n' roll. It includes his own full-steam ahead classic, 'Jump, Jive An' Wail', several innovative medleys and a clutch of attractive rockers by his accompanists, tenor sax player Sam Butera and his band, the Witnesses. Spurned by critics at the time, this anthology of ground-breaking, house-rocking music restores Louis Prima to his rightful, well-deserved place in the reissue spotlight.

Nino Tempo & April Stevens - Hey, Baby ! - The Nino Tempo & April Stevens Anthology
When I was a four year-old pre-school music fan, I would often borrow records from our neighbours. One of my favourites from their collection was ‘Deep Purple’ by Nino Tempo & April Stevens. I don’t suppose I could have explained how it made me feel at that age, but for what is essentially a beat ballad, ‘Deep Purple’ created a strangely ethereal mood. Hearing it again all these years later, together with the other recordings collected on “Hey, Baby!”, it’s clear that the key ingredient to Nino & April’s sound was the warmth conjured up by the sibling harmonies of the brother/sister duo.

Nino & April had each experienced a degree of success both independently and as a duo by the time ‘Deep Purple’ hit, Nino cutting his teeth as a session sax player and occasional film actor, while April enjoyed an on-off career as a feline, temptress-styled chanteuse. A selection of Stevens’ early sides is included here, sounding a little kitsch nearly 60 years on, but still rather alluring.

Following a series of near-miss 45s together, the duo casually knocked off a cover of the 30s chestnut ‘Deep Purple’ at the close of a session. Almost by accident, they’d hit on something. In spite of label boss Ahmet Ertegun’s doubts about the recording’s hit potential (“the worst thing they ever recorded,” he claimed at the time), it climbed to the top of the US chart, winning the Grammy for Best Rock & Roll Recording a few months later. The success of ‘Deep Purple’ led to the duo recording a slew of updated pre-rock standards, timed – rather unfortunately – to coincide perfectly with the British Invasion. Suddenly their audience had no interest in the hits of yesteryear, and it seemed that Nino & April’s moment had passed as quickly as it had arrived.

However, Tempo’s days as an in-demand saxophonist had led to a friendship with Phil Spector. This bond clearly paid off big time: the Tempo & Stevens magnum opus from ’66 – ‘All Strung Out’, originally written for the Righteous Brothers – is a powerful piece of work, and possibly the best Spector-influenced recording of the era, though the equally wall-of-sound-alike ‘The Habit Of Lovin’ You Baby’ gives it a run for its money.

Still other influences abound throughout this collection. The ache and yearn of Tempo's ‘Boys Town’ cuts so true it could be a “Pet Sounds” out-take. ‘Out Of Nowhere’ acknowledges – if not quite embraces – the Liverpool sound. And, while also tipping the hat to Holland-Dozier-Holland, April’s solo ‘Wanting You’ 45 from 1967 seems to look ahead to the UK studio sound of the end of the decade (think Macaulay-MacLeod or Cook-Greenaway).

This career-spanning compilation of Nino & April’s work is a real eye-opener if your familiarity with their output starts and ends with the hits. And on a personal level, hearing ‘Deep Purple’ 40-plus years on takes me straight back to being a four year-old, gazing at the Dansette in pure awe. Timeless and evocative, “Hey, Baby!” is a joy.

VA: - London American Label Year By Year 1963
The USA was the first country in which a London label appeared. It was the flagship of British Decca’s American operations as far back as 1934. In 1949 the first batch of these American records was made available in the UK on the new London American imprint. In 2009 Ace launched its “London American Label Year By Year” series, which with this volume devoted to 1963, stands at five volumes.

1963 was a very good year for Phil Spector, the releases on whose Philles label appeared on London American in the UK. Until very recently, Philles recordings were out of bounds for compilations such as this one, but with the record producer presently out of circulation, his catalogue has very recently become available for license. Every cloud, eh? Let’s face it, this particular edition would not have been an accurate representation of 1963 without the Ronettes, the Crystals, Darlene Love and Bob B Soxx & the Blue Jeans, all of whom are present and correct. Yay!

The inclusion of Darlene Love’s ‘A Fine Fine Boy’ here marks the first time the original 45 version has been legally available on CD. (All other digital issues contain a re-edit that is the result of irreparable damage to the original master.) Spector owed a lot of his success to Ellie Greenwich and her husband Jeff Barry, with whom he collaborated almost exclusively throughout 1963. The threesome co-wrote ‘A Fine Fine Boy’, ‘Then He Kissed Me’, ‘Be My Baby’ that year, and many more besides. Greenwich and Barry also penned bathos specialist Ray Peterson’s death-disc ‘Give Us Your Blessing’ and the Raindrops’ ‘What A Guy’, included here too. (Ellie and Jeff were the Raindrops, but you knew that.)

1963 was also a prime year for girl groups and female singers in general, a fact reflected here via the Sherrys, Little Eva, Marcie Blane, Robin Ward, Shirley Ellis and Ruby & the Romantics, not forgetting 50s R&B star LaVern Baker and South African ex-pat Miriam Makeba.

There’s a lot more to this CD than Phil Spector, girl groups and Brill Building songwriters, but hey, that’s me for you. In all, this collection contains the A-sides of 28 of the 178 singles released on the London American label in 1963. As the series is expanding in two directions, we’re unsure if the next volume will focus on 1964 or 1958, both of which were very good years for American music. Watch this space to find out. Either way, it’ll be a winner.

VA: - Rock Your Baby
t’s an odd truism in music that the songs that last the longest aren’t the Grammy winners, or the Mull of Kintyres or the multi million-selling soundtracks, but the songs that are sung in the playground and passed down from generation to generation. Maybe things have changed since I was a loveable scamp, but certainly in the 70s I was gleefully singing songs about the various bells of London or mass death via the plague. Just as oddly, if I were somehow elevated a minimum of two inches higher than my classmates I would proudly declare them dirty rascals, despite the fact this hadn’t been an effective insult for over a century. Perhaps today a government department sponsored by an alcopop manufacturer gives credits according to which corporate-owned nastiness kids choose to jig about to, but I for one hanker after a more innocent time. Which is exactly where this album comes in.

I love my kids, really I do. Even when I think I don’t, deep down I know I do. I love my kids and I love my car and I love my music, so this album was put together for those infuriating long journeys and those infuriating short journeys, when Clive and Natasha are creating in the backseat. We all fancy a singalong but I’m not in the mood for the tweenies, but I am in the mood for a long list of names that almost rhyme with food, or songs about idiot amphibians or dance tunes about monkeys. This will keep us all entertained for a couple of hours, till the little poppets have worn themselves out and I can rest easy, safe in the knowledge that I’m a great dad, and that my kids are entirely fictional.

Which is a relief, as he doesn’t really look much like me and I’m not entirely sure if that’s how you spell her name. So here we go, a new musical curriculum for the young and the simple of mind.

VA: - Sweet Inspiration - The Songs Of Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham

We have received many requests to add Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham to our songwriter series. It’s never really been about if we would, so much as when. With 2011 being something of a “Year Of Southern Soul” for Ace and Kent, what better way to kick it off than with a genius gathering of 24 of the best songs ever to bear their names below the title.

“Sweet Inspiration” does a bang-up job of assembling the key songs Dan and Spooner wrote together during the 1960s and early 1970s. A quick look at the track listing will show prospective buyers that my co-compiler Bob Dunham and I have tried hard to make sure that there’s a version of every major Penn and Oldham composition included. We haven’t always chosen the obvious versions, so there will be some nice surprises here for even the most avid collectors. It was difficult to bring what started out as a massive wish list down to just 24 selections, but we think our choices do justice to the performers of the songs and, most importantly, the writers.

Everyone will have their own highlights. Mine would include Arthur Conley’s Fame recording of ‘In The Same Old Way’ (which was originally written as a straight ahead country song) and country thrush Jeanne Newman’s riveting, previously unissued Goldwax recording of ‘It Tears Me Up’, one of the earliest songs Penn and Oldham wrote together. I’m also very partial to the Southern sincerity of the Box Tops’ ‘Everything I Am’ (a UK Top 3 hit for Plastic Penny in late 1967) and Tommy Roe’s little-known 1966 take on ‘Wish You Didn’t Have To Go’, a number made more famous a year later by James and Bobby Purify. But greatness abounds from beginning to end of this set, and it’s unlikely that any prospective purchaser will not be totally impressed by everything it contains.

A companion volume – which will also include songs co-written by Dan and/or Spooner with collaborators such as Donnie Fritts, Rick Hall, Marlin Greene and Chips Moman – will hopefully see the light of day next year. In the meantime, here’s over an hour of the sweetly inspired songwriting of Wallace Daniel Pennington and Lindon Dewey Oldham. Oh, what a power!

VA: - Teenage - Teenagers & Youth In Music 1951-1960
1-CD DigiPac (4-plated) with 68-page booklet, 34 tracks. Playing time approx. 83 mns. - Compiled by writer, journalist & film-maker Jon Savage. An aural (and visual) close study on the teenager phenomenon of the 50s. The teenager's role & position in 50s pop culture presented like never before. Endless classics (Chuck Berry's 'Sweet Little Sixteen', Dion & The Belmonts' 'Teenager In Love') mixed with more obscure masterpieces like Al Casey's raw 'Teenage Blues' and Portuguese Joe's wild and uncontrollable 'Teenage Riot'. Combined together they paint the full picture. - If anyone is suited to compile a CD themed about teenagers and their role in 50s rock 'n' roll and pop culture, it's UK music-historian, writer, journalist and film-maker Jon Savage. In 2007 Savage published a book about the teenage phenomenon ('Teenage: The Creation Of Youth 1875-1945') and Jon is currently working on a cinema release documentary based on this book. But first up is 'Teenage' on Bear Family Records. - 'Teenage' is a full length CD anthology that shines its spotlight on the teenagers of the 1950s, when the word 'Teenage' became the marketing hook of the new youth music: rock 'n' roll, ballads, doo wop, rockabilly, instrumentals and updated blues. - 'Teenage' covers the years 1951 to 1960. The thick booklet is lavishly illustrated with photos of rare 'teenage related' artifacts and memorabilia. Savage's in depth liner notes provide a fascinating read about the 'teenage' cultural phenomenon of the 50s as well as a detailed and personal track by track presentation of the songs. - It follows the Trikont release, 'Teenage: The Creation Of Youth 1911-1946'.

VA: - Where The Boys Are - The Songs Of Neil Sedaka and Howard Gre
Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield were the first songwriters to sign with Al Nevins and Don Kirshner’s Aldon Music. ‘Stupid Cupid’, their initial song for the company, was recorded by Connie Francis. It shot up the charts in 1958 and before long Aldon was the most successful music publisher in the USA, with scores of international hits in their catalogue and a stable of writers that included Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and many of the other top exponents of the day.

In 2005, Ken Emerson published his book Always Magic In The Air, in which he chronicled the lives and careers of seven eminent New York-based songwriting duos of the Brill Building era. Here at Ace Records, we launched our songwriter series the previous year with a collection of tracks penned by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the book’s main characters. Since then, the series has expanded to include, amongst many others, six of the writing teams featured by Emerson. With this latest edition, which spotlights the songs of Sedaka and Greenfield, the soundtrack of his book becomes complete.

The CD – which also includes a few numbers co-penned by third parties Carole King, Jack Keller, Roger Atkins, Helen Miller and Carole Bayer – comes with a bumper booklet featuring an exclusive interview with Neil Sedaka, who concludes: “Howie Greenfield and I wrote very commercially. Howie was one of the best lyricists in the business. His lyrics were very slick and polished, like tiny, compact novels, self-contained dramas. I think he was very underrated. The critics didn’t like him as much as the public did. The proof of the pudding is in the great two and a half minute songs we mastered. I would usually come with two or three finished tunes. He would choose the tune according to his mood at that moment. I liked to give him a choice. We fought, but we always made up. There were disagreements over phrases or musical notes. I think you have to have those fights. We stayed together for over 30 years. I’m very proud of the many, many songs we wrote together. They’re all my dear children. I still miss Howie a lot.”

Bobby Rydell - Bobby Rydell Salutes The Great Ones / Rydell At The Copa
Before Tamla/Motown, there was Cameo/Parkway. A groundbreaking Philadelphia imprint, the label churned out an astonishing number of huge hits (most written in-house) during its 12-year heyday and turned a gaggle of unknown young locals into stars. Sound familiar?

Although primarily remembered for its myriad dance craze hits, the catalogue actually encompasses the whole of rock’s golden era: instrumentals, novelties, doo wop, girl groups, soul, teen idols, British Invasion, garage bands and bubblegum, etc. Label honchos Bernie Lowe, Kal Mann and Dave Appell spared no expense, releasing singles with beautiful colour picture sleeves and flooding the market with an unprecedented torrent of LPs.

Cameo-Parkway material has been unavailable for decades, and collectors have waited impatiently for many years for the hits to make their digital debut. A label overview in 2005 and a few subsequent hits packages skimmed the surface. Out this month on Ace are 10 full albums on five CDs, along with a compilation of vocal group classics. The floodgates are now open, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Bobby Rydell was the quintessential teen idol, but there was a lot of talent under that pompadour. These two 1961 LPs find a 19 year-old Rydell courting our parents by singing “real” music, a path already well-worn by such artists as Sam Cooke, Bobby Darin and Jackie Wilson. “Salutes The Great Ones” harkens back to the Al Jolson era and Rydell has the vocal chops to pull it off. “At The Copa” displays the comedy and impersonation skills that made Rydell a movie star and frequent sitcom guest and packages his teen hits in an imaginative medley.

Dee Dee Sharp - It's Mashed Potato Time / Do The Bird
Operating out of Philadelphia, Cameo-Parkway was among the most successful independent record companies of the early 1960s, turning out a veritable production line of teen-friendly singles by artists such as Chubby Checker, the Orlons, the Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp and Bobby Rydell. This month sees the release on Ace of the latest batch of collections from the vaults of Cameo and sister logo Parkway in the shape of twofers from Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells and self-appointed “Cool Ghoul” John Zacherle.

Gospel-trained Dee Dee Sharp had three years experience in the record biz by the time she made her first showing on the charts singing anonymously alongside Chubby Checker on ‘Slow Twistin’’ in 1962, having paid her dues providing background vocals on records by artists such as Freddy Cannon, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Lloyd Price and Fabian. Her first solo single, released when she was just 16, zoomed up the Hot 100 too, as did a clutch of others over the next couple of years. When the Beatles came along, the hits dried up for Dee Dee, but she was soon snapped up by Atlantic Records, only to find herself in competition with Aretha Franklin. Sometimes life just ain’t fair. Here on this paring of her first two long-players, you get three of her biggest charters, some original tunes from the Cameo song factory plus knockout versions of other hits of the day. To hear her wail Ted Taylor’s ‘Be Ever Wonderful’ is a joy to behold. The booklet contains an essay by Ed Osborne featuring some fun quotes from Dee Dee herself.
