Connie Francis - Everybody's Somebody's Fool 2CD The Very Best of Connie Francis 1959-1961 Connie Francis is the original Madonna, the only female artist of her generation who was able to surpass many of her male contemporaries and top the charts, and still to this day troubles the modern ilk as the biggest selling female recording artist of all time. This new set is the follow up to Jasmine's very successful 'Fallin' - The Best of the Early Years' (JASCD 530) and across the two discs are a plethora of international hits, many of which were million sellers, plus LP and EP tracks, B-sides and hard to find material including a number of tracks which were never released! The hits include: 'Lipstick on Your Collar', 'Among My Souvenirs', 'Everybody's Somebody's Fool', 'My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own', 'Many Tears Ago', 'Where The Boys Are' and many more! This unique set is unlike any other Connie Francis hits-orientated collection or compilation and is a must for fans of this truly fantastic star!

Connie Francis - Fallin' - The Best Of The Early Years 2CD Alongside Brenda Lee, Connie Francis was the most popular female singer of the R&B era, and like Brenda she was a child prodigy made good. This special 2CD set presents a comprehensive overview of Connie's early career, all these sides being recorded between 1955 - 1958. Disc one features the ten discs she cut before her commercial breakthrough, including 'The Majesty Of Love', a duet with Marvin Rainwater which would eventually go on to sell a million copies and also her first two hits, the million selling 'Who's Sorry Now?' and 'I'm Sorry I Made You Cry'. Disc two kicks off with the multi million selling 'Stupid Cupid' & 'Carolina Moon', and includes Connie's further worldwide hits 'Fallin'', 'My Happiness', 'I'll Get By' and 'You Always Hurt The One You Love', alongside her first LP Who's Sorry Now?' and several collectors rarities.

Connie Francis - Rockin' Connie You’d think versatility would be a plus for a singer’s career, wouldn’t you? Well, tell that to Connie Francis. By leaps and bounds the most successful female singer of the early rock era, Connie has never even been nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I could plead her case at length, but with nowhere near the eloquence of “Rockin’ Connie”, Ace’s new CD that showcases 28 sterling examples of this Jill-of-all-trades’ mastery of the genre she helped popularise and define. Connie’s endless résumé begins with her career as a child performer in the early days of television, and she was still in her teens when she scored her first hit, ‘Who’s Sorry Now’, in 1958. By the end of the decade she had charted with a series of rockers, teen-angst ballads, old standards, Italian songs, even ‘God Bless America’. Her LP catalogue includes collections of Irish, German, Jewish, Spanish and, especially, Italian favourites, alongside sets devoted to folk, country, big band, waltzes, Christmas and kids’ songs. In the midst of this torrent of wildly eclectic concept albums, Connie also became a popular movie star, was a mainstay in nightclubs of the Vegas-Copa ilk and was ubiquitous on American TV, singing and performing comedy skits with older stars like Jimmy Durante and Jack Benny. This all-things-to-all-people approach may explain why few seem to recall that among the Hawaiian and Broadway releases were interspersed titles like “Rock & Roll Million Sellers” and “Do The Twist”. Leave it to Ace to remind us. Compiled and annotated by Mick Patrick and David Bell, “Rockin’ Connie” delivers exactly what it promises. Connie rocks, all right. She also rolls, bops, stomps, twists and boogies, tackling rock-oriented material with the same gusto and conviction she applied to Neapolitan ballads and patriotic anthems. No hulas or horas here. Connie faces down the big boys of early rock on covers of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and ‘Ain’t That A Shame’. Among the songwriters are such stalwart pop scribes as Neil Sedaka, John D Loudermilk, Phil Medley, Hank Hunter, Mark Barkan, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Connie particularly excelled on tunes in the girl group genre, as shimmering cuts like ‘My Best Friend Barbara’, ‘Don’t Ever Leave Me’ and several others aptly demonstrate. Rarities abound, depending on your location. Due to Connie’s unprecedented global reach, some releases were unique to particular countries. UK fans will meet several American 45 mixes for the first time. This Yank is having a grand old time playing and re-playing the incredible overseas-only ‘Robot Man’ and a Greenwich-Powers gem, ‘Look At Him’, that we were denied back in the day. Of particular interest is ‘It’s A Different World’, produced by Tom Wilson concurrent with his Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel and Mothers Of Invention sessions. How’s that for rock cred? As we’ve come to expect from Ace, the accompanying booklet is a treasure trove of rare photos, meticulous annotation and can’t-put-’em-down liner notes. Then there’s the music. Take it from me: “Rockin’ Connie” rocks! by DENNIS GARVEY (ACE RECORDS)

Conway Twitty - Ballads Of Conway Twitty 1-CD DigiPac - four panel - mit 36-page booklet. 33 tracks. Playing time: 79:24) -- They called him 'The Best Friend A Song Ever Had.' Here are 33 reasons why. An exclusive compilation drawn from Conway's early years, before his country stardom which includes the original version of the worldwide mega-hit 'It's Only Make Believe'! A companion to Bear Family's top-selling 'Conway Twitty Rocks'! -- The statistic books rank Conway Twitty among the Top 5 country artists of all time, but before he was a country singer, he was a rock 'n' roll balladeer. One of the best, in fact. This exclusive compilation is drawn from his recordings for Sun, Mercury, and MGM Records between 1956 and 1963, and includes his original version of one of the greatest power ballads of all time, 'It's Only Make Believe'. And fans of great singing need this compilation to discover why Conway Twitty was called 'The Best Friend A Song Ever Had.'

Dee Dee Sharp - It's Mashed Potato Time / Do The Bird Operating out of Philadelphia, Cameo-Parkway was among the most successful independent record companies of the early 1960s, turning out a veritable production line of teen-friendly singles by artists such as Chubby Checker, the Orlons, the Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp and Bobby Rydell. This month sees the release on Ace of the latest batch of collections from the vaults of Cameo and sister logo Parkway in the shape of twofers from Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells and self-appointed “Cool Ghoul” John Zacherle. Gospel-trained Dee Dee Sharp had three years experience in the record biz by the time she made her first showing on the charts singing anonymously alongside Chubby Checker on ‘Slow Twistin’’ in 1962, having paid her dues providing background vocals on records by artists such as Freddy Cannon, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Lloyd Price and Fabian. Her first solo single, released when she was just 16, zoomed up the Hot 100 too, as did a clutch of others over the next couple of years. When the Beatles came along, the hits dried up for Dee Dee, but she was soon snapped up by Atlantic Records, only to find herself in competition with Aretha Franklin. Sometimes life just ain’t fair. Here on this paring of her first two long-players, you get three of her biggest charters, some original tunes from the Cameo song factory plus knockout versions of other hits of the day. To hear her wail Ted Taylor’s ‘Be Ever Wonderful’ is a joy to behold. The booklet contains an essay by Ed Osborne featuring some fun quotes from Dee Dee herself. By Mick Patrick (ACE RECORDS)

Del Shannon - The Complete UK Singles (and more) 1961-1966 2CD Del Shannon’s formidable hit list qualifies him as one of the truly great artists of the 1960s. Del made #1 on both sides of the Atlantic with his first 45, ‘Runaway’, and for the next few years he delivered the chart goods again and again with some of the best singles ever made – most of which he wrote or co-wrote. This new Ace set is, we believe, the first to present Del’s UK 45s, as released between 1960 and 1966, in the order they appeared here and in the same couplings used on the original London and Stateside pressings (which often differed from their US counterparts). Listening to them in sequence, it’s easy to build a mental picture of an artist who was always looking to stretch his creativity and to find new sounds to keep him in the charts long after many of his peers had waved goodbye to the Hot 100. It would be easy to say that Del never released a better record than ‘Runaway’, but that’s not to disparage other early classics such as ‘Hats Off To Larry’ and ‘So Long Baby’, which would be high-water marks of any discography, or later gems such as ‘Keep Searchin’ (We’ll Follow The Sun)’ and the ferocious ‘Move It On Over’, as good a record as anything to come out of Detroit’s garage scene at the time. Whether these are your favourites or you prefer the more soulful slant of ‘Little Town Flirt’ and ‘Two Kinds Of Teardrops’ or well-remembered flipsides such as ‘Kelly’ and ‘Don’t Gild The Lily, Lily’, there were no bad Del Shannon singles; having them all in one collection merely reinforces that statement. As well as the UK singles we’ve included Del’s original version of ‘His Latest Flame’ and his cover of ‘From Me To You’, recorded while the Beatles where still in the UK Top 40 with it – both of which came out on UK EPs. To make sure that every UK single is represented accurately, we’ve also added Del’s pal Max Crook’s ‘The Snake’, which was mispressed as ‘Jody’ on the flip of early copies of ‘Runaway’. The EP covers and the labels of each and every A and B-side are featured in the booklet, along with songsheets, period ads and photos taken during Del’s many UK tours. By Tony Rounce (Ace Records)

| Dion - 70s: From Acoustic To The Wall Of Sound Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie has proclaimed Dion's "Born To Be With You" to be one of the greatest records ever made, Spiritualized's "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" album was made in its shadow and James Walsh from Starsailor recently took over a whole page of the NME to explain why Dion DiMucci's 70s recordings show him as the "greatest singer that ever lived" It is this music and more that is captured in "Dion: 70s". By the late 60s Dion was an artist enjoying an artistic rebirth. He had scored big rock'n'roll hits a decade earlier, with and without the Belmonts, on such classics as Runaround Sue and The Wanderer. A move to Columbia, despite some early hits had not gone quite the way that the label had expected, when Dion proved himself to be no Bobby Darin clone crooner-.-being a far grittier character with a few personal problems. Nonetheless he discovered blues, and became a regular on the Greenwich Village folk scene. He made a sensational set of masters, probably being the first artist to electrify a Dylan song. Some of these cuts made it out on 45, but most languished in the vaults. At around the time he was ridding himself of his addictions Laurie Records released Abraham, Martin and John which became a Top 5 single. Dion signed to Warner Brothers in the first half of the 70s. He opened his account with a stone classic, Your Own Back Yard, a look back on his descent into and ascent out of addiction. It's a wonderous collaboration between Dion, his accoustic guitar and the Dixie Flyers that is probably the greatest drug song ever, and one of the best of any kind. Dion recorded four albums that mix a troubador-like spirit with some fantastic songs, all setting off Dion's awe-inspiring voice. The music ranges from the simply acoustic numbers such as Sanctuary, through carefully arranged ballads like It All Fits Together through to the good time revivalism of Doctor Rock and Roll. Then came what should have been the dream collaboration: Dion and Phil Spector. "The Born To Be With You" sessions were an unhappy experience for Dion, that never resulted in a finished album (the final product had its time made up by the inclusion of two earlier singles. Spector was an old friend of Dion's but totally out of control. That said, where it reached up high it truly soared, as on the title track and the wonderful Only You Know. One final album "Streetheart" was a more homely affair where a mature Dion reflects upon growing up. This is very special music, by a true rock'n'roll great, on one CD for the very first time.
