| 5 Royales - It's Hard But It's Fair - The King Hits And Rarities So, where DOES soul begin? Well, according to popular consensus (and also to the BBC, if their entertaining "Soul Deep" series is anything to go by) it begins with Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. Now, I wouldn't want to disagree with that idea in principle they're fine artists both, and if you want to start digging near the Roots Of Soul, the works of these two giants of popular music are as good a place as any to do that. But if you've already gone beyond brothers Sam and Ray, and you feel it's time to dig a little deeper, it's probably time for you to dig the grand-daddy of all the soul groups that proliferated in the mid 60s, Winston-Salem's magnificent "5" Royales. Led by the sublime dual leads of Johnny and Eugene Tanner, and anchored by the often unbelievable guitar acrobatics of Lowman Pauling, the Royales were arguably the first group to bring the church directly to R&B and, in doing so, create a whole new strand that foresaw its future rather than relying on its past for inspiration. They were a direct influence on James Brown (who re-recorded several of their songs, including Think and Come Over Here), Ray Charles (who re-did their Tell The Truth) and the Temptations (who were coached, in their early days, by Pauling's brother and former Royale Clarence Paul who would play the Temptations his "5" Royales records, ceaselessly, in an attempt to get their vocal harmonies on point). Lowman Pauling also influenced a generation of guitar pickers, most notably the young Steve Cropper who cheerfully admits to copping a lot of his early licks off the man (and who was only too happy to point this out in his lovingly-written foreword to this package). Pauling was also a songwriter of considerable talent, penning the majority of the "5" Royales recordings including their original version of the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame classic, Dedicated To The One I Love. The group sang like angels, and Pauling generally played like he was possessed by the devil. The "5" Royales had it all, and then some. The group had started off on Apollo Records, where they had created such timeless group R&B as Baby Don't Do It and Laundromat Blues. When they came to King in 1954 they were primed and ready to take group R&B to its next stage and they proceeded to do just that over the next six years and across more than 50 great recordings. "IT'S HARD BUT IT'S FAIR" is by no means the first "5" Royales CD anthology, but it's the first to anthologise the biggest hits and the classiest rarities in one package. (Indeed, around half of these tracks have never been on CD before, which makes purchase mandatory.) Even if you have the hits on other packages, you will never have heard them this good before, as this CD's master is compiled exclusively from the fresh digital transfers that Ace's Alec Palao and I made, from the original production masters, during our 2004 trip to the King tape vaults. The "5" Royales had surprisingly few hits on King, but each and every one of their recordings offers something to cherish. The intense soul balladry of the Eugene Tanner-led My Wants For Love is more than complemented by the cool in Johnny T's delivery of ace jivers I Could Love You and Women About To Make Me Go Crazy. How many budding soul harmony groups learned their trade off classics like our title track, or the original versions of Think and Dedicated To The One I Love is probably beyond calculation. And there are probably not enough fingers and toes in Memphis to count how many times Steve Cropper not to mention a myriad other young guitar slingers would have played along with The Slummer The Slum, I'm With You and the truly stellar Get It in the course of honing his own magnificent craft. If you have any interest at all in the deep roots of soul music, you simply cannot afford not to own this fabulous compact disc. A group as important as the "5" Royales will always deserve a definitive anthology. Without a shred of bias I can say that certainly as far as their King recordings go this is all that and more. It's hard, it's fair and it's a must for your selection. By Tony Rounce (Ace Records) |

| Belmonts - Sabina, United Artists & Laurie Sides Vol 2 TELL ME WHY?by Gordon Watson (Editor of "Feelin' No Pain" Doo Wop Magazine Probably best known as the group behind Dion's early hits, the Belmonts remain one of the most popular vocal groups from the rock'n'roll era. When Dion left to pursue his solo career in 1960, the Belmonts continued as a group under their own name. With varying degrees of success, they recorded many good quality records throughout the 60s. Formed in New York City in 1957, the group took their name from Belmont Avenue - the main drag through the Italian section of the Bronx where they honed their street corner style doo wop with which they are synonymous today. The material they recorded with Dion has been well documented and has seen several releases over the years. This collection brings together their lesser known recordings as a group under their own name. With Carlo Mastrangelo taking over as lead vocalist, success came quickly with Tell Me Why charting for the boys in 1961. There was a mini revival of vocal group music in the New York area at the turn of the decade and it seemed the Belmonts could do no wrong-.-five of their first six singles all found a place on the charts. In common with many vocal groups from the golden era, the Belmonts went through a few line up changes and musical styles as their career developed but never deviated too far from the beautiful harmonies which brought them early success. In this collection and its predecessor VOLUME 1 (CDCHD 580) you will not only find all the classic Belmont singles from Sabina, but also the pick of the recordings from their Laurie and United Artist sessions including many previously unreleased tracks, alternate takes and several stereo version which appear for the first time on CD. Listen out for the stereo, alternate take of my personal favourite Belmonts song Diddle-Dee-Dum (What Happens When You're Love Has Gone) and Lookout For Sandy which was changed to Cindy for the official release to avoid clashing with Dion's smash hit Sandy. | Big John Greer - I'm The Fat Man Big John Greer…what a man! Starting off as a key member of Lucky Millinder's legendary band, the Big Man was soon blowing hot sax on a succession of salty, saucy, sexy hits, as rockin' as they were risqué. As well as playing with Millinder, Bullmoose Jackson and others of the most out-there aggregations of the time - Big John was really the daddy of them all: just listen and you will hear! This is a must for all fans of rockin' sax honkin' risque R&B. The success of our series of these on radio, with such knowledgeable and tasteful DJs as Mark Lamarr, I think speaks eloquently for itself… |

| Bobby Sheen - Anthology 1958-1975 At last a Bobby Sheen anthology! Comprising recordings that stretch from Sheen’s debut lead vocal via his Phil Spector period to his final single, this sweeping collection covers a variety of styles that range from doo wop and the Wall of Sound to Northern and Southern soul. The earliest tracks here were cut by Bobby as the lead vocalist of the Robins, the group he joined as a 16 year-old in 1958. The influence of Clyde McPhatter is very evident on these sides, especially ‘Live Wire Suzy’ (a Belgian popcorn favourite) and the group’s lively take on ‘The White Cliffs Of Dover’. By 1962 Sheen was working with Spector, initially on a one-off 45 for Liberty Records. Sharing lead vocal duties with Darlene Love, he reached the Top 10 later that year with ‘Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah’, released as by Bob B Soxx & the Blue Jeans on the producer’s Philles logo. He also contributed a soaring version of ‘The Bells Of St Mary’ to Spector’s classic “A Christmas Gift For You” LP. The McPhatter influence is still evident on ‘I Want You For My Sweetheart’ and ‘My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You’, released as a one-off single on the Dimension label in 1965. A contract with Capitol resulted in a handful of singles including the Northern Soul favourite ‘Dr Love’ (released in the UK in the now very collectable Capitol Discotheque ’66 series). This compilation also boasts two previously unissued Capitol sides: ‘Baby I’ll Come Right Away’ (the wonderful Ashford/Simpson song well-know to soul fans via Mary Love’s reading) and the slow blues ‘Don’t Pass Me By’. As the 60s came to a close, Bobby switched from his high tenor to a more contemporary lower register, cutting great tracks for Warner Bros in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with producers Clayton Ivey and Terry Woodford. His superb recordings of Philip Mitchell’s ‘Something New To Do’ (another Northern anthem) and ‘I May Not Be What You Want’ are among his best work. He sounds totally different again on ‘Don’t Make Me Do Wrong’. The Ivey/Woodford team also produced Bobby swansong single, issued on the Chelsea label in 1975. The performances collected here are proof that Bobby was a singer who deserved a much higher profile than he achieved. Despite his great looks, obvious talent and strong music business connections, he never registered a hit record in his own name. This CD redresses the balance and proves that all Bobby lacked was good luck. Years spent as a member of the Coasters kept him in work until his untimely death from pneumonia in November 2000. His son Charles has become the custodian of his father’s legacy and contributed the wonderful photographs that illustrate the CD’s accompanying booklet, which features an essay by Dennis Garvey built around exclusive interviews with many of Bobby’s friends and colleagues. | Carlo And The Belmonts - Carlo And The Belmonts Pre and post Dion history of the Belmonts and Carlo solo on Mohawk, Laurie, Sabrina, Laurie - hey there was a lot going on in the Bronx in the early 60s. Hear and read it on this fine compilation Carlo Mastrangelo was one of the original Belmonts, the group who backed Dion Di Mucci for the first few years of his career. Dion split to find fame & fortune as a solo act in 1960, leaving the Belmonts a little high & dry. They in turn split from Laurie Records, after one unsuccessful single, and soon found moderate success, with a series of 45s on Sabina (and Sabrina) Records. Dion in turn left Laurie records for Columbia and so Laurie signed up Carlo again as his replacement. This compilation, which is made up of the 16 tracks on the original Carlo & The Belmonts wax release on Ace some years back, with the addition of 8 further sides, features sides from both Carlo's solo career and post-Dion Belmonts, some of which feature Carlo on lead vocals - confusing? Anyway the 24 sides on this bumper bundle CD take you on a trip from The Belmonts 1957 recording of "Santa Margherita" through to their 1975 AOR A Brand New Song/Story Teller single and Carlo solo outings from 1963 to the seriously, psyched out "Nowhere Chick" in 69. Weird, but wonderful. |

| Contours - Dance With The Contours Featuring unissued Motown Recordings 1963-1964. They may not have had the silky skills of some of my later Motown favourites, but their raucous invitations to dance remain as potent now as they did almost 50 years ago. It goes without saying that I’m delighted to have been involved in Kent’s new expanded version of their never-issued 1964 Gordy album “Dance With The Contours” featuring the 12 originally-scheduled tracks and a further dozen from the vaults, all recorded during the same time frame. Of the 26 tracks, 24 have never been issued in any form until now. How great is that? There’s nothing subtle about lead Contour Billy Gordon’s gargles-with-razorblades holler, and songs about the Uncle Willie, Crossfire, Limbo, See Saw and other fly-by-night dance crazes are hardly going to win Ivor Novello Awards, but factor in some agreeably rough and ready vocal harmonies and season with a bunch of cracking vintage Motown backing tracks and you have 66 minutes of dancefloor fun that just won’t quit (although the tempo occasionally slows a bit, in order to let you and the group get your breath back). A few of these cuts have circulated as poor quality bootlegs and mp3s, but everything here is drawn from fresh transfers of original Motown mastertapes – even the two previously issued sides, ‘Can You Do It’ and ‘Can You Jerk Like Me’. “Dance With The Contours” is the first of several officially approved Motown releases that are coming your way on Kent. Forget art. Let’s dance! By Tony Rounce (Ace Records) |

| Crows - Gee An early Harlem street corner harmony group, the Crows arguably had the first hit rock & roll record when a song they had recorded in 1953, "Gee," had a surprising resurgence a year later and crossed over from the R&B charts onto the Top 20 pop list. A little rawer and rougher than the doo wop groups that would follow them, the Crows released eight singles (16 sides) on the Rama Records label between 1952 and 1954, then disbanded after their last single, "Sweet Sue," an amped-up remake of the Earl Burnett hit from 1928, failed to generate much interest with the public. This brief compilation has both of those songs, plus "I Love You So," the strong flip side of "Gee," and given that the Crows were woefully under-recorded, it probably has all that casual listeners will need. ~ Steve Leggett (Collectables Records) |
