| VA: - Red Bird Story Vol. 1 2LP 60 original recordings from the celebrated New York label including classic tracks from The Shangri-Las, The Dixie Cups and more. Founded in 1964 by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Red Bird Records may only have been operational for three years but during that time the label became synonymous with the 60s girl group sound, particularly due to the success of The Shangri-Las and The Dixie Cups – both of whom scored No.1 hits for Red Bird in its fledgling year. Rising Phoenix-like from earlier try-outs with Tiger (founded in 1962) and later Daisy (in 1963), Red Bird was unique among indie labels in that its output was of a consistently high standard and almost half of its releases made a commercial impact. The secret to Red Bird’s “hit factory” lay in no small part with the chart-topping Brill Building songwriting team of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry who’d previously penned hits for producer Phil Spector’s Ronettes and Crystals. In the years prior to the British Invasion, the husband and wife wrote prolifically for most of the label’s biggest names including the aforementioned Shangri-Las (‘Leader Of The Pack’, ‘Out In The Streets’) and Dixie Cups (‘Chapel Of Love’) The Butterflys (‘Goodnight Baby’), Sam Hawkins (‘Hold On Baby’), The Ad Libs (‘He Ain’t No Angel’) and Andy Kim (‘I Hear You Say’), as well as occasionally recording in their own right. This deluxe two disc set draws together the best of Red Bird along with tracks from its Blue Cat Soul/R&B subsidiary and material from the short-lived Tiger and Daisy affiliates. Carefully compiled and annotated by Roger Dopson, this compilation is a worthy successor to previous volumes incorporating lesser-heard gems alongside the major hits. |

| VA: - A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records In 1963, visionary producer Phil Spector, then at the peak of his creativity and cultural influence, created one of the first—and still one of the greatest—rock ’n’ roll Christmas albums. Using the artist roster of his Philles label—the Ronettes, the Crystals, Darlene Love and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans—and the legendary studio musicians of the Wrecking Crew, Spector applied his fabled Wall of Sound to a set of Christmas pop standards and holiday-themed originals. The resulting album brilliantly merges the holiday spirit with the singular sonic uplift of the Spector sound. Highlights include the Ronettes’ bubbly reworkings of “Sleigh Ride,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” the Crystals’ upbeat renditions of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and Darlene Love’s soulful readings of “Winter Wonderland,” “White Christmas” and the Ellie Greenwich/Jeff Barry/Phil Spector composition “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” A Christmas Gift for You concludes with a rare on-mike appearance by Spector himself, delivering a spoken holiday message to listeners. A Christmas Gift for You originally had the misfortune of being released on November 22, 1963, the same day as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and was not a major commercial success. In the years since, however, it has been embraced as a beloved pop-culture touchstone, with many of its tracks becoming holiday airplay favorites. In 2003, A Christmas Gift for You was ranked Number 142 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Longtime Spector fan Brian Wilson has named it as his all-time favorite LP. The album’s influence has also been reflected in cover versions by contemporary artists. Bruce Springsteen based his interpretation of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” on the Crystals’ Spectorized version, while U2 closely followed Darlene Love’s original when covering “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” Sundazed’s new edition of A Christmas Gift for You is sourced directly from the original Philles label mono masters and is pressed on 180 gram vinyl. | VA: - Baltimore's Teen Beat A Go Go Reissue of ultra-rare early 60’s Dome Records classic LP compilation of Teen Garage Bands from the Baltimore, MD area. Ralph Johnson, president of Wedge & Dome Records, was also the sponsor of many “Battle Of the Bands” shows throughout Maryland. These shows helped them find the bands that hadn’t already found them, since the grand prize for these shows was to have one of their songs on this album. The second prize at these shows was that they would pay 50% of their expenses to get a track for the album. These bands made up the Baltimore sound of the sixties- Baltimore’s own contribution to the Garage Band Sound. Thanks to Get Hip Records, this material is now available again. The original pressing of 500 copies of this LP went out of print in 1966, and original copies now sell for $200 and up if you’re lucky enough to run across one! |
