Eric Burdon & The New Animals - Beat Beat Beat - Episode Six
Beat Beat Beat was a German music programme that ran during the sixties. Not to be confused with the other well known German pop programme Beat Club, Beat Beat Beat was broadcast out of Frankfurt commencing in 1966. The programme ran to 26 episodes between its launch in 1966 and the final programme in January 1969 all of which are still in the German television archives. The shows were eclectic affairs and included performances by artists as diverse as Eric Burdon and the New Animals, The Move, Sam and Dave, Cat Stevens and Barry Ryan to name just a few.

This disc in the series of Beat Beat Beat releases features just one band - Eric Burdon and The New Animals. Eric Burdon had achieved massive worldwide success with the original Animals in 1964. By 1967 the original band had split and Eric influenced by the new sounds coming out of America's West Coast formed the New Animals which were more psychedelically inclined. The band performs five tracks including a cover of the song Morning Dew made famous by Tim Rose. Other songs include Trumpets Blow, See See Rider and a harking back to the style of the older Animals with the John D Loudermilk song Tobacco Road and Road Runner. Rarely seen before this footage is not only historical but an amazing document of the times

Fever Tree - Live 1969
PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED LIVE RECORDING SHOWCASING THE FINAL STAGE APPEARANCE BY THIS LEGENDARY GARAGE COMBO’S ORIGINAL LINEUP!

The never-released 1969 live effort from Fever Tree! Gulf Coast punk phenoms the Bostwick Vines see Cream and Hendrix and bring their tough interpretation of that combination to Hollywood, California. With three unique studio albums to their name, Fever Tree splinters after this live gig in Texas, but not before laying down one final testament to their evermore worth as swooning psychedelic rockers.

Sharpening their chops on the Gulf Coast circuit, followed by a high-profile opening night gig at Hollywood’s legendary Kaleidoscope, Fever Tree developed a keen sense of musical drama and dynamics. This versatility is in sharp display on the concert’s rendition of their underground radio hit “San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native).” For the rest, Live 1969 focuses on groovers, a perfect set-up for the gliding fuzztones of lead guitarist Michael Knust, the sonic organ of Rob Landes, the thick rhythms provided by E.E. “Bud” Wolfe III on bass and John Tuttle on drumsand the dynamic, driving lead vocals of Dennis Keller.

“Don’t Come Crying to Me Girl,” a song originally found on the band’s second album, levitates the band beyond any earthly confines. Elsewhere, the set moves between a soaring cover of Donovan’s “Hey Gyp,” their own power pop “Grand Candy Young Sweet” and a whirlng psych take on Wilson Pickett’s “Ninety-Nine and One Half (Won’t Do).” Playing as if their lives depended on it, Live 1969 captures a band at the height of its powers, forever preserved on this final audio testament.

Five Americans - Early Americans
The Five Americans, five Oklahoma kids who blew the roof off the national charts when they moved to Dallas in 1966 and cut smashes like “I See the Light” and “Western Union,” recorded plenty of swaggering garage material just before their chart-topping days at Abnak Records. With the full cooperation of the band, Sundazed has unearthed a Texas-sized load of fuzzy ’n primitive Americans sides that have never seen the light of day, as well as the master tapes for the band’s ultra-rare Jetstar singles, circa ’64-’66. Put ’em all together and you have our new Early Americans compilation — a powerhouse, high-definition BeatRocket LP that’s guaranteed to get anyone in the vicinity dancing till dawn’s early light.

Francoise Hardy - Midnight Blues - Paris London 1968-1972
The events of May 1968 across France signalled the end of the yé-yé era and a new seriousness in French pop. Unlike perky domestic stars such as Sheila or France Gall, Françoise Hardy had always had a moody image – in reality she was chronically shy. A keen astrologer, this is something she has always been quick to blame on her star sign, Capricorn: “You have the longest nights, the longest absence. When the sun is in Capricorn, you are not there. You are below the horizon. You are invisible.” 1968 was also the year she retired from public performance after a rare tour of Britain.

Françoise had set up her own independent Asparagus Productions in late 1967. Initially, her old label Vogue continued to distribute her records, but in 1969 Françoise signed a deal with the small Sonopresse imprint, where she would stay until 1972. For many of her fans this is the most intriguing and exciting part of her career.

From the beginning of her career and into the early 70s, Françoise recorded quite extensively in English, German, Italian and Spanish, but that material is not easy to find these days. This collection, recorded variously in Paris and London between 1968 and 1972, comprises tracks drawn from her albums “En Anglais”, “One-Nine-Seven-Zero” and “Françoise Hardy” (aka “If You Listen”) and offers a very welcome opportunity to hear her perform in English.

1965’s ‘All Over The World’ had given Françoise her only UK Top 20 hit. Although she couldn’t follow it up in Britain, France remained loyal and she was still a huge star there when she made her first full, specially recorded English language album “En Anglais” in 1968.

“One-Nine-Seven-Zero” – released worldwide in 1969, but never in France– was recorded at several different sessions in London and Paris, and with a number of disparate collaborators. Though its variety of studios and arrangers could have made it a patchwork, the album is held together by a clutch of songs written and produced by Tommy Brown and Micky Jones. The opening trio – ‘Song Of Winter’, ‘Magic Horse’, ‘Strange Shadows’ – are especially strong, with warm, full arrangements by Jean-Pierre Sabar.

Jones and Brown also contributed ‘Bown Bown Bown’ to 1972’s “Françoise Hardy”, recorded at Sound Techniques in Chelsea with folk rock producer Tony Cox. Sound Techniques was a bit like a social club for folk musos from Joe Boyd’s Witchseason stable. The Trees album had been recorded there, as had albums by Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. The latter’s Gerry Conway and Pat Donaldson played on the sessions for Françoise’s album, along with Richard Thompson and Fairport drummer Dave Mattacks.

There are precious few enough albums from this golden period of folk rock as it is; this release gives long overdue exposure to a unique coming together of the British folk underground and a French musical legend.

Hailing from PA, George Darro and the Vikings were apparently not on altogether amicable terms. However, they were able to channel their negative energy into two hot tracks as evident on this record. “Viking Twist” is a wild instro with honking sax, twangy guitar and incessant drumming. The flip, is a ‘50s rocker which features the vocals of George

Georgie Fame - Mod Classics: 1964-1966
Georgie Fame, the Flamingo All-nighter, mods and GIs. These are the things that dreams are made of. Whilst a mid sixties Rod Stewart might have claimed that it was his ambition to sing with Count Basie, it was Georgie who actually did it. And whilst the Who and the Small Faces had a legion of moddy boy fans in the middle of the decade, it was Georgie who was championed by the Soho ace faces a couple of years earlier. Although the Fame monicker was the invention of Larry Parnes, it was the erstwhile Clive Powell who made it his own by taking a Jon Hendricks jazz song to the top of the UK jazz charts in 1964. Georgie had the hippest musical credentials and the ability to take jazz, soul and R&B to the top of the pop charts without compromising or selling out. Polydor Records has a wonderful “Beat Classics” CD available that covers Georgie’s biggest hits so we have devised our “Mod Classics” as an alternative view with only a little crossover with that release. We take in the period between early 1964 and late 1966 when Georgie’s records appeared on Columbia Records and he was backed on record by either the Blue Flames or the cream of the UK’s jazz musicians in the Harry South Big Band.

We have decided to pass by Georgie’s ska recordings as they are for another time and place, so we have filled the grooves with Georgie’s takes on soul, jazz and R&B hits. From his first LP “Live At The Flamingo” we have the band swinging their way through Oscar Brown’s ‘Work Song’ and ‘Parchman Farm’ whose composer, Mose Allison, was one of Georgie’s heroes and influences. By the time of his second album “Fame At Last” Georgie was tackling obscure records from the then unknown Stax label – William Bell’s ‘Monkeying Around’ – taking on Louis Jordan’s arrangement of ‘Point Of No Return’ and also numbers by Major Lance and Ray Charles. In each case he made each song his own, stamping his own vocal mark on each and every one. His next album was 1966s ‘Sweet Thing’ which featured less jazz and more soul, as Don Covay’s ‘See Saw’, the Spinners’ title track, cuts by Stevie Wonder, The Mar-Keys and Sam Cooke were all taken on. We’ve also included a version of Earl Van Dyke’s ‘Soul Stomp’ from around the same period that has only previously been released on a Japanese CD.

1966 saw a second album, “Sound Venture”, which is perhaps Georgie’s finest moment. Recorded with the Harry South Big Band, Georgie’s voice more than holds its own. On ‘Dawn Yawn’ Georgie writes a wonderfully evocative tale of Soho’s night-life and the inevitable come-down the day after, whilst his version of Willie Nelson’s ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ is a masterpiece of vocal delivery, and the best version of this much-covered song bar none.

We have also rounded up EP cuts from Georgie Fame’s Fats domino tribute EP, some excellent cuts that were only on 45 such as ‘Yeah Yeah’’s B-side ‘Preach and Teach’, the B-side of Georgie’s second Columbia number one ‘Getaway’ a thunderous latin-tinged instrumental called ‘El Bandido’ which is a sure-fire dancefloor winner, and the self-penned single ‘Something’. We feel that a compilation like this was a must for many years and we are very glad that we are the ones to have done it.
