Billy Fury - His Wondrous Story
total run ca 80 min. Billy Fury became an overnight music sensation in the late 1950 s when his moody brand of rock and roll earned him the nickname of Britain s Elvis . Fury s stage performances and sexual charisma left his female fans screaming for more. He was Britain s original teen idol and had more top 40 hits than the Beatles during the 1960 s. Hits such as Halfway to Paradise; Jealousy; Maybe Tomorrow; Wondrous Place; A Thousand Stars; In Thoughts of You and many others have ensured Fury s place in pop history, despite his tragically short career. For the first time ever, Billy Fury s musical biography is now available on this magnificent full-length DVD along with a soundtrack of hits from his Decca career. His Wondrous Story highlights the early days of British rock and roll and Fury s dominance of the British pop scene. The programme features archive performance footage and interviews with Fury s family and contemporaries including Sir Jimmy Savile; Alvin Stardust; Vince Eager; Michael Winner; Paul Gambaccini; John Leyton and Clem Cattini.

Cookie And The Cupcakes - Kings Of Swamp Pop
I suspect that during the golden age of swamp pop, which is often said to be from 1958 to 1963, few people in this country had heard of Cookie and the Cupcakes. I confess ignorance until the 70s when I bought their reissue LPs on the Jin label. Today, any aficionado will immediately quote Mathilda as the Cupcakes' outstanding offering. In his book "South To Louisiana", John Broven describes it thus: If swamp-pop has a signature tune, an anthem, it has to be the quintessential "Mathilda". Recorded for George Khoury's Lyric label and leased to Judd (owned by Judd Phillips of Memphis), the single climbed to #47 in the Billboard chart in early 1959. Mathilda would surely have gone higher with a bigger company behind it. Cookie's crying vocal was stunning. Billboard was right when it noted that "the cat has a sound and he belts it as tho' from the swamps" The Cupcakes' instrumental backing - baying saxes, tripleting piano, and swirling guitar over a wallowing beat - was just as majestic, while the song itself was memorably melodic. Even today, everybody accepts that if a local band plays Mathilda and nobody dances, the musicians may just as well pack up and go home. Johnnie Allan speaks of Cookie's great influence on other performers and of how Mathilda was played on all the radio stations, Cajun, country and western, rock'n'roll and R&B. Written around 1956, but not recorded until 1958 after being turned down by Eddie Shuler and Don Robey among others, it's this hit version that closes the CD and should not be confused with the 1962 remake which is also included. Starting as the Boogie Ramblers and with Huey 'Cookie' Thierry only recently joined, the Cupcakes signed for Eddie Shuler's Goldband label in July 1952 but for some reason the single Cindy Lou /Such As Love, with original member Shelton Dunaway on vocals, was not released until 1955. That historic offering is presented here. Cookie became joint leader with Shelton, sharing vocals and both playing tenor sax. Other members were Sidney 'Hot Rod' Reynaud, tenor sax-.-Marshall LeDee, guitar-.-Ernest Jacobs, piano-.-Joe 'Blue' Landry, bass guitar-.-and Ivory Jackson, drums. Around 1963 Little Alfred (Babino) joined the band after his success with Walking Down The Aisle which was recorded with the Berry Cups who were modelled on the Cupcakes. A slew of emotional swamp-pop classics appeared between 1959 and 1964, including Until Then, I've Been So Lonely, Even Though, the lively I Cried and the wonderful Belinda. Cover versions also appeared, adapted to the inimitable Cupcakes' style but usually faithful to the original, such as the traditional Betty & Dupree-.-Got You On My Mind, the Big John Greer R.&B hit from 1952-.-Ivory Joe Hunter's I Almost Lost My Mind-.-Jiving Gene's Breaking Up Is Hard To Do-.-Shirley and Lee's Feel So Good-.-Pat Philips' Sea Of Love-.-Joe Turner's Honey Hush-.-Chuck Willis' Charged With Cheating-.-and the Platters' The Great Pretender featuring Carol Fran. All tracks have been remastered to achieve the best possible sound and this is apparent in comparison with the 1990 Japanese P-Vine CD, the only other release in that format that I am aware of which makes available some of the 30 tracks included here. Shane K Bernard's booklet notes also tell the story of Cookie's disappearance from South Louisiana in the mid-60s (he moved to Los Angeles)-.-of the rumours of his disabilities or even death-.-and of his rediscovery by Cupcakes' pianist Ernest Jacobs in 1992. Disabled he was, but able to walk with the aid of a stick which is how he performed magnificently at the 1995 Blues Estafette in Utrecht, backed by the revived nine-piece Cupcakes who included Shelton Dunaway, Ernest Jacobs, 'Hot Rod' Reynaud, Little Alfred and Marshall LeDee. It was a memorable gig and this is a memorable CD.

John Zacherle - Monster Mash / Scary Tales
Operating out of Philadelphia, Cameo-Parkway was among the most successful independent record companies of the early 1960s, turning out a veritable production line of teen-friendly singles by artists such as Chubby Checker, the Orlons, the Dovells, Dee Dee Sharp and Bobby Rydell. This month sees the release on Ace of the latest batch of collections from the vaults of Cameo and sister logo Parkway in the shape of twofers from Dee Dee Sharp, the Dovells and self-appointed “Cool Ghoul” John Zacherle.

John Sebastian did the notes for the John Zacherle set. Yep, that John Sebastian, he of the Lovin’ Spoonful. It seems he was a bit of a Boris Karloff fan, which is how he first became aware of John Zacherle, who hosted re-runs of old horror movies on WCAU-TV out of Philadelphia in the late 1950s. The craze for scary movies spread to the record biz, which led to Zacherle reaching #6 with ‘Dinner With Drac’ in 1958. (OK, we’re a bit late for Hallowe’en with this release, but hey, there’s always next year.)

Routers - A-Ooga!!! Stamp & Shake
Limited edition of 1500.

Most UK football fans would be surprised to learn that one of the most instantly recognisable hand-clapping chants heard throughout England’s soccer grounds during the 60s was created by two brothers born on a small farm in rural Illinois, Lanny and Robert Duncan. Having settled in Los Angeles, Lanny was signed by A&R man Joe Saraceno, who was looking for likely pop stars in the early 60s teen idol mould. Lanny was not only a pop star in waiting but, when paired with songwriting partner Robert, also a source of catchy instrumentals, such as the Routers’ ‘Let’s Go’ – an irresistibly infectious tune delivered by the twangy guitar of Tommy Tedesco, the rasping sax of Plas Johnson and the big beat of drummer Earl Palmer. Layered on top of everything was the most maddeningly contagious sequence of handclaps that virtually begged you to clap along. And the world did.

Joe Saraceno and his right-hand man, writer and musician Michael Z Gordon, had already scored a couple of instrumental hits with their independent productions released on Liberty under the name of the Marketts. The duo had everything at their fingertips to create more of the same; top arrangers Ernie Freeman and Rene Hall and the cream of LA session guys were on call. They had so many good commercial ideas that they created a second vehicle for their productions under the name of the Routers. Saraceno took the master for ‘Let’s Go’ to Joe Smith at Warner Bros and watched as the disc rose to #19 towards the end of 1962, and then make it up to #32 early the following year in the UK. Saraceno preferred his easygoing relationship with Smith and so transferred the Marketts’ future releases to Warner Bros (the best of which can be heard on their Ace CD “Outer Space, Hot Rods & Superheroes” CDLUX 006).

As well as providing ideas, helping with arrangements and production and writing some of the material, Michael Z Gordon also took charge of promotion by leading several line-ups of touring musicians (including Scott Walker at one time) out on the road as both the Marketts and the Routers. In the CD booklet Michael recalls some of his experiences on the road. He also very kindly provided several photos of the touring bands he led, several of which have not been seen before.

“A-Ooga!!! Stamp & Shake With The Routers” collects together the band’s best recordings, including the hits ‘Let’s Go’ and ‘Sting Ray’, all of the rare non-LP 45s and highlights from their four albums. Best of all, there are four unreleased tracks which we are delighted to present here for the first time anywhere. We confidently declare it the best Routers CD ever.

Roy Young - The Best Of 50 Years 2CD
One of rock'n' roll's greatest entertainers celebrating his half century as a professional musician has put together this 2 CD set of tracks spanning that entire period of rock 'n' roll, blues and soul described by one critic as "a mixture between Little Richard, Ray Charles and Joe Cocker".
Roy auditioned back in 1959 for Jack Good and performed on the now legendary BBC TV Show "Oh Boy!" Other TV Shows followed and Roy found himself opening for The BEATLES in Hamburg and subsequently spent 4 years playing on the Reeperbahn. Brian Epstein asked Roy to return to London with The Beatles as he could arrange a recording contract for him-Roy declined as he was committed to his performances in Germany.

After returning to the UK Roy joined CLIFF BENNETT & The REBEL ROUSERS and performed on their hits. He released solo albums "The Roy Young Band" in 1971 and "Mr Funky" in 1972 and tracks from those albums are included on this 2CD set.

In 1977 DAVID BOWIE asked Roy to play keyboards on his album "Low" which they recorded in Paris.

After many years of living in the USA Roy returned to UK in 2000 and returned to live performances including Beatles Festival in Berlin and Star Club, Hamburg 40th anniversary.

A new solo album was released in 2002 "Still Young" with tracks written by DENNIS MORGAN one of the most successful songwriters in the world. (from Angel Air website)
