B.J. Thomas - Scepter Records Hits And More 1964-73
B.J. Thomas was one of the most consistent - and consistently good! - purveyors of American pop for more than a decade. A major chart star for most of the second half of the 1960s and through to the mid '70s, B.J.seemed to always be able to anticipate the needs of the US Top 40 at every career twist and turn, and his great records like Hooked On A Feeling and Mighty Clouds Of Joy were ever a positive enhancement to the AM radio waves of their time (as they are to oldies FM radio stations across the USA in the 21st Century). For around eight of those years, B.J. recorded exclusively for the go-ahead, New York-based independent Scepter Records, and its his best recordings for Scepter that are the subject of Ace's first-ever UK anthology to seriously appraise, and afford historical significance to, Billy Joe Thomas.

Born in Oklahoma and raised near Houston, B.J. had been a local East Texas phenomenon for a few years when Scepter picked up his locally-released, blue-eyed soul revival of Hank Williams, Sr's I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and turned it into a national Top 10 hit. From then on in he was the world's property, scoring again and again on the national and international charts with the tracks that form the bulk of this compilation. (Rather strangely, the majority of his Scepter 45s did not make the UK charts. This is not a comment on their quality - as you'll hear, they have 'quality' in abundance! - but rather on the restrictive nature of UK radio in the late 60s and early 70s. That, and the taste of a public that could regularly chart Des O'Connor and Val Doonican in 1967 and 1968 but that could seemingly find no room for Hooked On A Feeling until it was massacred a few years later by Jonathan King.)

This is the most comprehensive collection of B.J. Thomas' Scepter hits and significant sides to be released on CD to date. It's the only one that encompasses his first success for the label and his final ones. The track selection serves to remind the listener that he might just have been the most versatile pop singer of his generation, able to move, seemingly effortlessly, from blue-eyed Texas soul to Bacharach-David singalong to Memphis pop with country overtones and make it all sound great.

Highlights of this CD include a trilogy of Memphis-recorded songs that tend to be associated with the late Elvis Presley, but it was B.J. Thomas who cut the original, and in every way superior, versions of It's Only Love and I Just Can't Help Believing. Had things gone his way, B.J. might also have been the originator of Suspicious Minds, but his regular writer Mark James had already given The King first refusal - and the rest you know. As you'll hear, though, B.J.'s own version (with its 'suspicious'-ly similar backing track!) is no mere 'make do'. Scepter would regularly send B.J. to Memphis or Muscle Shoals in his hitmaking heyday, and the presence of some great Southern musicians make these, and great recordings like The Eyes Of A New York Woman and Most Of All, even greater than they would have been if cut elsewhere.

More great stuff can be found in the first section of this CD, recorded when B.J.was still working out of and around Houston and still infusing his sessions with a mixture of the sounds and styles he heard while growing up in East Texas. Among these tracks you'll find bluesy workouts of country classics (Tomorrow Never Comes and I Can't Help It), pacey Northern Soul-style pop (I Don't Have A Mind Of My Own) and two of the more interesting 'death discs' you'll ever hear, Billy And Sue and Plain Jane - the latter of which surely influenced Stephen King's 'Carrie' in many ways!

Further highlights here include another unofficial 'trilogy', this time of Bacharach and David songs. Everyone surely knows Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head and here it is, on this CD, in its definitive B.J.Thomas version. Even better, though, are the ambitious Long Ago Tomorrow and the quite wonderful, and brilliantly scored, Everybody's Out Of Town. Collectively they are three of the best late-period B & D songs, and it's hard to imagine anyone putting them over better than B.J. Thomas does.

Much the same could be said about any of these songs, and BJ's performances thereof. Whether dipping back into vintage country via Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb, putting his own spin on a then-unreleased Stevie Wonder masterpiece or dipping into the stellar catalogue of Brill Building giants Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, B.J.Thomas makes his versions count in a way that lesser singers could only dream of doing. That's why these recordings sound as vital today as they did more than 30 years ago. That's why any serious connoisseur of American Popular music will need to find space on their shelf for this 'must-have' CD. And that's something I'd be prepared to say regardless of whether or not I compiled and/or wrote the notes for it (which I did).

If you know the name, but not the music, there's never been a better time to get 'Hooked' on B.J. Thomas than now - and here!

Billy Fury - His Wondrous Story
total run ca 80 min. Billy Fury became an overnight music sensation in the late 1950 s when his moody brand of rock and roll earned him the nickname of Britain s Elvis . Fury s stage performances and sexual charisma left his female fans screaming for more. He was Britain s original teen idol and had more top 40 hits than the Beatles during the 1960 s. Hits such as Halfway to Paradise; Jealousy; Maybe Tomorrow; Wondrous Place; A Thousand Stars; In Thoughts of You and many others have ensured Fury s place in pop history, despite his tragically short career. For the first time ever, Billy Fury s musical biography is now available on this magnificent full-length DVD along with a soundtrack of hits from his Decca career. His Wondrous Story highlights the early days of British rock and roll and Fury s dominance of the British pop scene. The programme features archive performance footage and interviews with Fury s family and contemporaries including Sir Jimmy Savile; Alvin Stardust; Vince Eager; Michael Winner; Paul Gambaccini; John Leyton and Clem Cattini.

Bonnie Dobson - Vive La Canadienne
(1-CD DigiPac - four panel - with booklet, 24 tracks. Playing time: 81:50) -- A long-overdue reissue of the rare folk recordings of Canadian singer Bonnie Dobson. Her 1961 composition 'Morning Dew' continues to draw attention and praise. Her 1960s recordings such as 'Live At Folk City ' reflect the American folk music boom at the height of its creativity and popularity. Her 1964 and 1972 folk albums are combined here, with previously unissued recordings. -- Bonnie Dobson is best known as the composer of 'Morning Dew'. Written in 1961, 'Morning Dew' was subsequently recorded by artists including The Grateful Dead, Clannad, Nazareth, Tim Rose, Lulu, Jeff Beck and Robert Plant. -- Always a well-respected figure within the folk scene, Dobson was born in Toronto, Canada in 1940. 'I was nurtured on the music of Paul Robeson. I have a memory of standing next to the record player and singing along to 'I Still Suits Me'. I guess I must have been about four years old at the time.' -- When she was barely 20 Dobson went from singing at school assemblies to sharing a stage with Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee at a major US folk festival. Although she lacked professional experience, the pristine quality of her voice attracted promoters and producers to her. Her earliest albums, including a live performance at Gerdes Folk City in New York's Greenwich Village, continue to draw praise. -- Her final American albums drew Dobson away from the pure folk tradition in the direction of popular music. She recalls, 'The last recordings I made were my RCA albums in 1968/69, both of which were heavily orchestrated.' Despite the change in production style, what strikes listeners most about Dobson is the stellar quality of her voice. Producer Bobby Scott writes, 'It has always seemed to this writer that music is the language of this thing we call love. And nothing can compare with the voice of love speaking through a beautifully pure instrument. The voice of Bonnie Dobson is such an instrument. Her gifts are remarkably natural. There is in this Canadian girl's voice an innate enchantment. For some singers the voice must be a developed mechanism. Not so with Miss Dobson. Her voice........can only be called a gift.' -- Bonnie Dobson moved to London, England in 1969 and gave up writing and performing shortly afterwards. She began her second career at the University of London, working and studying in the fields of politics, philosophy and history. -- It's been too long since the name Bonnie Dobson has graced a CD release. To folk fans, her name is familiar and her talent is well respected. If this is your first encounter with her you are in for a rare experience. As producer Bobby Scott concludes, 'Bonnie Dobson is an artist. Not just a singer but a bit of Autumn wind and Summer rain and she is as natural. I am sure that Love has had no sweeter or warmer champion than Bonnie Dobson'.

Francoise Hardy - Midnight Blues - Paris London 1968-1972
The events of May 1968 across France signalled the end of the yé-yé era and a new seriousness in French pop. Unlike perky domestic stars such as Sheila or France Gall, Françoise Hardy had always had a moody image – in reality she was chronically shy. A keen astrologer, this is something she has always been quick to blame on her star sign, Capricorn: “You have the longest nights, the longest absence. When the sun is in Capricorn, you are not there. You are below the horizon. You are invisible.” 1968 was also the year she retired from public performance after a rare tour of Britain.

Françoise had set up her own independent Asparagus Productions in late 1967. Initially, her old label Vogue continued to distribute her records, but in 1969 Françoise signed a deal with the small Sonopresse imprint, where she would stay until 1972. For many of her fans this is the most intriguing and exciting part of her career.

From the beginning of her career and into the early 70s, Françoise recorded quite extensively in English, German, Italian and Spanish, but that material is not easy to find these days. This collection, recorded variously in Paris and London between 1968 and 1972, comprises tracks drawn from her albums “En Anglais”, “One-Nine-Seven-Zero” and “Françoise Hardy” (aka “If You Listen”) and offers a very welcome opportunity to hear her perform in English.

1965’s ‘All Over The World’ had given Françoise her only UK Top 20 hit. Although she couldn’t follow it up in Britain, France remained loyal and she was still a huge star there when she made her first full, specially recorded English language album “En Anglais” in 1968.

“One-Nine-Seven-Zero” – released worldwide in 1969, but never in France– was recorded at several different sessions in London and Paris, and with a number of disparate collaborators. Though its variety of studios and arrangers could have made it a patchwork, the album is held together by a clutch of songs written and produced by Tommy Brown and Micky Jones. The opening trio – ‘Song Of Winter’, ‘Magic Horse’, ‘Strange Shadows’ – are especially strong, with warm, full arrangements by Jean-Pierre Sabar.

Jones and Brown also contributed ‘Bown Bown Bown’ to 1972’s “Françoise Hardy”, recorded at Sound Techniques in Chelsea with folk rock producer Tony Cox. Sound Techniques was a bit like a social club for folk musos from Joe Boyd’s Witchseason stable. The Trees album had been recorded there, as had albums by Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. The latter’s Gerry Conway and Pat Donaldson played on the sessions for Françoise’s album, along with Richard Thompson and Fairport drummer Dave Mattacks.

There are precious few enough albums from this golden period of folk rock as it is; this release gives long overdue exposure to a unique coming together of the British folk underground and a French musical legend.

Jimi Hendrix - Blues
Originally released in 1994, the Jimi Hendrix Blues album features 11 blues performances recorded by Jimi between 1966 and 1970 showcasing the guitarist's mastery of the 12-bar form. This double-LP audiophile edition of Blues is arguably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives.

Framed by his 1967 acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train 'A Comin'" and a 1970 Trio performance of the same song, these 11 rough and ready tracks illustrate Hendrix's deep spiritual connections to his blues roots and his daring experimental take on the shape of future blues to come. And they've never sounded so vital, necessary or dynamic!

This 2LP version will forever stand as the definitive-sounding, high-performance edition of this historic collection.

Rationals - Rationals
Big Beat’s Rationals compilation “Think Rational” delivered some long overdue kudos to these seminal Michigan rockers. As promised we are proud to present the group’s 1970 album in the same well-annotated and lavishly illustrated manner; the first time these recordings have been reissued legitimately.

At the time of the album’s release, Detroit rock was epitomised by the Grande Ballroom and the powerful sounds of the groups associated with it, such as the MC5, Stooges, SRC, Amboy Dukes and Frost. The Rationals were younger than the majority of the musicians in these groups, and they ploughed their own rock/R&B furrow, resisting the heavyweight arrangements deemed mandatory, and eschewing the fashionable hirsute image of the time for a neat, latter-day mod look. Not that the Rationals were unpopular at the “high energy” Grande – far from it. The group appeared as a regular, and no doubt refreshing, alternative to the bluster of many of their harder-edged contemporaries. Their classic 1969 single ‘Guitar Army’ became an anthem of sorts for Detroit rock, with its universal truth that seemed to have been submerged in the overheated revolutionary rhetoric of the time – that the music was the message.

Having left their mentor Jeep Holland, of A-Square Records,in 1968, the Rationals cast around for a contract and a producer, eventually settling for a deal with Bob Crewe’s short-lived Crewe label. The result, this album, were as soulful as their earlier recordings but it demonstrated better the breadth of the group’s talents. Intricate, complex originals like ‘Ha Ha’ and ‘Deep Red’ nestled easily with tried and tested R&B chestnuts from their stage act and inspired covers like Dr John’s ‘Glowin’’ and Mike d’Abo’s soon-to-be-classic ‘Handbags And Gladrags’. All showcased the amazing pipes of vocalist Scott Morgan to great effect.

Sadly, the Rationals’ long-overdue shot at recording a long-player did not translate into record sales and by the end of the year the group had split. They remain a cherished memory for their devoted hometown audience of Ann Arbor who had been by their side since they first emerged in 1965.

Our reissue of “The Rationals” adds the rare single mixes of ‘Guitar Army’ and ‘Sunset’, along with two previously unissued tracks, including an amazing ten minute live-in-the-studio take of ‘Wang Dang Doodle’ that goes some way to explaining the roots of that devotion. The Rationals were truly one of the era’s finest.

Roy Young - The Best Of 50 Years 2CD
One of rock'n' roll's greatest entertainers celebrating his half century as a professional musician has put together this 2 CD set of tracks spanning that entire period of rock 'n' roll, blues and soul described by one critic as "a mixture between Little Richard, Ray Charles and Joe Cocker".
Roy auditioned back in 1959 for Jack Good and performed on the now legendary BBC TV Show "Oh Boy!" Other TV Shows followed and Roy found himself opening for The BEATLES in Hamburg and subsequently spent 4 years playing on the Reeperbahn. Brian Epstein asked Roy to return to London with The Beatles as he could arrange a recording contract for him-Roy declined as he was committed to his performances in Germany.

After returning to the UK Roy joined CLIFF BENNETT & The REBEL ROUSERS and performed on their hits. He released solo albums "The Roy Young Band" in 1971 and "Mr Funky" in 1972 and tracks from those albums are included on this 2CD set.

In 1977 DAVID BOWIE asked Roy to play keyboards on his album "Low" which they recorded in Paris.

After many years of living in the USA Roy returned to UK in 2000 and returned to live performances including Beatles Festival in Berlin and Star Club, Hamburg 40th anniversary.

A new solo album was released in 2002 "Still Young" with tracks written by DENNIS MORGAN one of the most successful songwriters in the world. (from Angel Air website)

Shocking Blue from the Beat-scene of the Hague of the 1960s was the first Dutch band to have a #1 hit in the US, 'Venus'.
After a number of other hits and international tours, the band sadly split in 1975.

Their influence on music passed on to new generations; both Nirvana and The Prodigy covered the song 'Love Buzz' at some time in their careers. 'Love Buzz', the new vinyl-only compilation released specially by Music On Vinyl, is a collection of their best hits.
It's ssued in a gatefold sleeve on two 10" with a swelteringly sexy poster of singer Mariska Veres.

A special treat awaits the early birds: the first batch of 500 copies will be pressed on shockingly blue vinyl!
