Ronnie And His Twanging Little Fellow - Ronnie And His Twanging Little Fellow
levy on läpileikkaus nelikon musiikilliseen sielunmaisemaan vuosien ajalta. Yhtyeen
muodostavat Antti Kukkola, Sami Huotilainen, Tema Lampinen ja Kalle Kotiranta.

Ronny and The Daytonas - G.T.O.
When Ronny & The Daytonas cut “G.T.O.” -- the all-time “turn it on, wind it up, blow it out” hot rod classic -- and an album of similar nitro-burning 1964 scorchers, it was clear the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean had no monopoly on rubber-burning dragstrip rock. Pressed on surfboard-thick High-Definition Vinyl and featuring liner notes based on candid interviews, along with exclusive photos of the band. The songs are so real you can almost hear the screeching tires.

Routers - A-Ooga!!! Stamp & Shake
Limited edition of 1500.

Most UK football fans would be surprised to learn that one of the most instantly recognisable hand-clapping chants heard throughout England’s soccer grounds during the 60s was created by two brothers born on a small farm in rural Illinois, Lanny and Robert Duncan. Having settled in Los Angeles, Lanny was signed by A&R man Joe Saraceno, who was looking for likely pop stars in the early 60s teen idol mould. Lanny was not only a pop star in waiting but, when paired with songwriting partner Robert, also a source of catchy instrumentals, such as the Routers’ ‘Let’s Go’ – an irresistibly infectious tune delivered by the twangy guitar of Tommy Tedesco, the rasping sax of Plas Johnson and the big beat of drummer Earl Palmer. Layered on top of everything was the most maddeningly contagious sequence of handclaps that virtually begged you to clap along. And the world did.

Joe Saraceno and his right-hand man, writer and musician Michael Z Gordon, had already scored a couple of instrumental hits with their independent productions released on Liberty under the name of the Marketts. The duo had everything at their fingertips to create more of the same; top arrangers Ernie Freeman and Rene Hall and the cream of LA session guys were on call. They had so many good commercial ideas that they created a second vehicle for their productions under the name of the Routers. Saraceno took the master for ‘Let’s Go’ to Joe Smith at Warner Bros and watched as the disc rose to #19 towards the end of 1962, and then make it up to #32 early the following year in the UK. Saraceno preferred his easygoing relationship with Smith and so transferred the Marketts’ future releases to Warner Bros (the best of which can be heard on their Ace CD “Outer Space, Hot Rods & Superheroes” CDLUX 006).

As well as providing ideas, helping with arrangements and production and writing some of the material, Michael Z Gordon also took charge of promotion by leading several line-ups of touring musicians (including Scott Walker at one time) out on the road as both the Marketts and the Routers. In the CD booklet Michael recalls some of his experiences on the road. He also very kindly provided several photos of the touring bands he led, several of which have not been seen before.

“A-Ooga!!! Stamp & Shake With The Routers” collects together the band’s best recordings, including the hits ‘Let’s Go’ and ‘Sting Ray’, all of the rare non-LP 45s and highlights from their four albums. Best of all, there are four unreleased tracks which we are delighted to present here for the first time anywhere. We confidently declare it the best Routers CD ever.

Rumblers - It's A Gas
Boss! When Californian group the Rumblers hit the American charts with their single ‘Boss’ in February 1963 the word, used locally by the surfing community to describe anything they regarded as cool, was adopted by teenagers across the nation. This word-association with surf culture, and the concurrent success of the group’s label-mates the Chantays with their Top 5 hit ‘Pipeline’, led to the Rumblers being classified by many as a surf group. But this was far from the truth. With Joe Houston’s ‘All Night Long’ as their theme song they were a sharp R&B band, described by their bass player Wayne Matteson as a black group with white skin: “We did a lot of James Brown tunes … We dressed well, and we had all of our songs choreographed.”

Naming themselves after Link Wray’s 1958 hit ‘Rumble’, the group’s first release paired the instrumentals ‘Stomping Time’ and ‘Intersection’ on the small Highland label which secured them sessions at the famed studio in Downey, California attached to Wenzel’s Music Town record store. Here, a take-off of the Strangers’ 1959 hit ‘Caterpillar Crawl’ evolved into the number they named ‘Boss’. And no wonder it became a hit, the opening bars carry one of the all-time catchiest intros. A frantically whammied low note from guitarist Mike Kelishes precedes a four-to-the-bar bass drum beat that is developed into a hypnotic riff by bass guitar, building in intensity as first guitars and then sax join in. Half a dozen bars of primal pounding and you’re hooked. Simple, but oh so effective.

A couple of early Rumblers compilation CDs have long since become sought after collector’s items, but “It’s A Gas!” surpasses them all by being a far more comprehensive selection. And in true Ace fashion it is taken direct from the best sources bringing vastly improved sound quality. The accompanying booklet features an informative essay from compiler Brian Nevill telling the full story of the group plus loads of never-before-seen pictures from the collections of the Rumblers themselves. In addition to the best of the group’s singles for Downey and Dot and selections from their “Boss” LP, there are CD debuts for both sides of the Highland single and a later 45 released under the name of the Interns. If that wasn’t enough there are no less than 10 tracks new to a Rumblers CD including four totally unreleased recordings in the shape of ‘Warhead’, ‘Why Did You Make Me Cry’, ‘Freight Train’ and ‘Strawboss’.

With all their best in one package, “It’s A Gas!” is the definitive collection of the Rumblers and is a compilation that surf and instrumental fans will find irresistible – it’s a boss gas, man!

Rumblers - Rumblin' & Rare
This new Rumblers set makes the group’s entire output available on CD. (To complete your Rumblers collection, you’ll need our previous Rumblers comp “It’s a Gas”, plus a couple of free-floating oddities exclusive to two of our other compilations of Downey material.)

All but eight of the tracks here are hitherto unissued. Of the previously released material, ‘Boss Drums’, ‘Harlem Nocturne’, ‘Walking With The Boss’, ‘Boss Blues’ and ‘Lost Weekend’ are from the only album the group issued in its lifetime (the rest of which is available on “It’s A Gas”). The latter three titles have never been reissued before. ‘Sorry’, ‘Til Always’ and ‘Gospel Truth’ are from single releases. The first two are vocals and the last was the B-side of the 45 the group released under the moniker the Nylons.

Nine cuts are released here for the first time anywhere. Of these, ‘Poor Boy’, ‘Underwater’ and ‘Wockytok’ are from the group’s initial Downey sessions, and are contemporary with their big hit ‘Boss’. ‘Slingshot’, ‘Rumblin’ And Stumblin’’, ‘Wedgee’, ‘Charger’ and ‘Saxwax’ are from the second line-up of the band (which cut the great ‘Soulful Jerk’). Then there’s ‘Lots To Learn’, an unreleased vocal track lifted from the session the group did using the name Bel Canto’s, under the production eye of a young Barry White.

The booklet contains a host of rarely seen photos supplied by members of the group.

Sandy Nelson - Big Sixties Frat Party!!!
Chock full of prime dance-floor movers, with no mid-60s favourite left unturned, “Big Sixties Frat Party!!!” is conclusive proof that Sandy Nelson could make you dance to even the most gloomy Leonard Cohen tune. Although Sandy's New Orleans-style sax-led instros were mostly behind him by the time that he recorded the material here, his embrace of black music continued just the same as he took on Motown marvels such as the Temptations’ ‘Ain’t Too Proud To Beg’ and the Supremes’ ‘My World Is Empty Without You’, soul heavyweight Wilson Pickett’s ‘Mustang Sally’, the Larks’ poised R&B on ‘The Jerk’ and Jimmy Smith's jazzy reworking of ‘I Got My Mojo Working’ with the vocal line replaced by an enormously fuzzed-up guitar. Best of all is Sandy stomping through Stevie Wonder’s ‘Nothing’s Too Good For My Baby’ featuring deep baritone sax, high-flying trumpets, shrieking Hammond organ and a beat that could power a rocket to Jupiter.

We also get beaty covers of the McCoys’ ‘Hang On Sloopy’, Paul Revere & the Raiders’ ‘Good Thing’ and ‘Just Like Me’, Tommy James & the Shondells’ bubblegum classic ‘Hanky Panky’, the Lovin’ Spoonful’s classy ‘Summer In The City’ and the Mamas & Papas’ haunting ‘Monday Monday’. Less expected are dynamite versions of Question Mark’s ‘I Need Somebody’, all stinging guitars delivered with a punk attitude, and a barmy treatment of Khachaturian’s ‘Sabre Dance’ taken at breakneck speed with Sandy’s tom-tom riff laying down the template for Al Capps’ imaginative arrangement. Who would have thought it was originally written as music for a ballet.

There’s a healthy dose of instrumental classics too with a thrilling chase through an echoey ‘Batman’, a ton of paradiddles on drum feature ‘Tim Tom Drum’, a brace of surfing classics with Dick Dale’s ‘Let’s Go Trippin’’ and all-time anthem ‘Pipeline’. Henry Mancini’s dramatic ‘Peter Gunn’ is a tour-de-force only ever previously heard on 45, and entirely different to the LP version. The jewel in the crown is ‘Casbah’, which reunites Sandy with Richie Podolor, who’d helped him create all of his big hit singles; Richie’s tune is a mesmerising blend of Eastern and surfing sensibilities and is a stone classic.

Sandy scored no less than 11 entries into the US album charts between 1962 and 1966, and with this compilation we draw from 10 of them. Although his style of music may have changed over the years, Sandy always gave it his all – plus he used the best producers, arrangers and musicians. Within you will hear the accomplished skills of producers Joe Sarceno, Dave Pell, Dallas Smith and Ted Glasser; arrangers Nick deCaro, Rene Hall, Don Peake, Al Capps and Mike Post as well as top Hollywood musicians such as guitarists Bill Pitman, Tommy Tedesco, Ben Benay, Dennis Budimir, Barney Kessell, Mike Deasy, Howard Roberts, Lou Morrell; saxmen Plas Johnson, Steve Douglas, Jim Horn, Jackie Kelso and Billy Green; bassists Carol Kaye, Larry Knechtel, Lyle Ritz, Red Callender and keyboard players Gene Garf, Mike Rubini, Ray Johnson, Jim Hobbs, Don Randi and Kay Klassy.

Sandy Nelson And The Sin City Termites - Nelsonized
Some of this will make you want to dance...some of it will make you want to fight and at least one or 2 songs will make you wonder what the hell is going on. But the whole thing is the result of Eddie Angel teaming up with the legendary drummer Sandy Nelson plus Remi Gits and Billy Favata from Torturing Elvis. Begun in the summer of 2000 as more of an experiment with Sandy, Remi and Billy, it eventually turned into an album of instrumental songs a few years later when Eddie joined up to really bring it together. The songs are a mix of psychobilly, surf, garage rock, rockabilly and just plain weird.

Santo & Johnny - Sleepwalk
When Les Paul hit the scene at the end of the '40s and then Duane Eddy in the '50s, it became apparent that the use of the guitar and its sound had begun to change. The next in line to push the new sound further were Santo & Johnny.

Listen and marvel at the hits, 'Teardrop', 'Caravan' and their first ever release, the timeless, 'Sleepwalk' which became their first number one hit!

There is no better introduction to Santo and Johnny and their repertoire than this collection of standards and rock & roll numbers all in wonderful stereo.
