| Roy Orbison and Faron Young - Sing Elvis Presley and others ! An unreleased home recording of a rare and offstage behind the scenes glimpse of the early Rock n’ Roll era featuring Roy Orbison and Faron Young. In the fall of 1956, these two musicians visited the home of Judy Baker in Corpus Christi, Texas for some partying and socializing. Someone brought a guitar and requested an impromptu performance. Judy captured the evening on her portable tape recorder. This has become known as the ‘Party of 56’ and photographs are included in the enclosed 20 page CD booklet. The recording shows a testament to the pervasive influence of Elvis Presley on the music and performers of the day. Please note that this is a home recording. Every effort has been taken to achieve optimum sound quality, however since these recordings are previously unreleased, priority is given to its historical content. |

| VA: - Elvis Heard Them Here First From his debut recording session to his last, Elvis Presley loved to reinterpret. The first song he ever cut, ‘My Happiness’, was one he probably learned from the 1948 recording by John and Sondra Steele. The last song, ‘He’ll Have To Go’, probably came via Jim Reeves (although Jim was not the first to record it – that honour went to one Billy Brown). In 24 years of studio and stage activity, Elvis cut over 150 songs that had been recorded previously – and put his own stamp on all of them, regardless of who sang them first. All of which makes him a guaranteed shoo-in for his own ‘special edition’ in Ace’s popular “You Heard It Here First” series. Most people who buy Ace CDs will already know what the originals of songs such as ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, ‘One Night’, ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Blue Moon Of Kentucky’ sound like. We could have gone the obvious route with this project and stuck to Elvis’ revivals of R&B, blues and hillbilly material, but we’ve elected to compile “Elvis Heard Them Here First” from songs he cut after his military service put his career on hold for a while. We’ve tailored our selection to embrace the originals of some of his biggest hits – ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Girl Of My Best Friend’, ‘Guitar Man’ – and some of his most obscure B-sides and albums cuts. Believe us, they don’t come much more obscure than Duane Dee’s ‘True Love Travels On A Gravel Road’, the Bards’ ‘Goodtime Charlie’s Got The Blues’ or Roger Douglass’ ‘Never Ending’. In doing so, we hope more than a few of even the most hardcore Elvis collectors will discover some original versions of songs they may not have even suspected were ever recorded by anyone other than Elvis. We can’t say with 100% certainty that Elvis did hear these versions first, and we’re pretty sure that, in one or two cases, he definitely didn’t. Throughout his life, Elvis grabbed music from everywhere. A voracious collector and listener, he loved nothing more than to put his own stamp on a song that he loved, particularly in the years following the ’68 Comeback Special when he was no longer bound by the constraints of what his notorious management insisted he record. The beautiful vintage Alfred Wertheimer cover shot of the young Elvis, an inevitably jam-packed booklet featuring the usual wealth of rare labels and ephemera, and a detailed sleeve note chronicling the songs in the order he cut his versions, it’s a package no Elvis fan will want to be without, even though he doesn’t sing one note. | VA: - Elvis Suomessa 2 ELVIS IN FINLAND, AGAIN! Dozens of songs of Elvis Presley’s repertoire have been recorded in Finland from the beginning of the 60’s and up ‘till these days – both in Finnish and in English. This obviously includes many sides of Elvis’s versatile recording career: rock tunes, ballads, country and movie songs. The new collection “Elvis in Finland 2” starts with a version of That’s All Right, Mama (Kaikki hyvin mama) by a legendary singer Rauli Somerjoki. This song comes from Elvis’s first and Rauli’s last recording session. Probably the most well-known Elvis movie songs in Finland, Flaming Star (titled Kohtalon tähti) and The Walls Have Ears (Seinillä on korvat) are both naturally included on this cd. Early Finnish rock’n’rollers, like Jussi Raittinen, Rock Jerry and Pekka Loukiala, have their own versions on this collection too. There are also a couple of rarities on the collection. One of them is Summer Kisses, Winter Tears (Kesän suukot talvi vei) which is the only single release by a singer called Richard. Some fine arrangements can be found as well: an a cappella group Veeti And the Velvets delivers a very nice version of King Creole and the late Tapio Heinonen sings beautifully his version of Mary in the Morning (Kaunein aamuisin). “Elvis Suomessa – in Finland vol. 2” celebrates the 25th Anniversary Year of The Official Elvis Presley Fan Club of Finland. Cd includes the following songs in English: Baby Let’s Play House, My Baby Left Me, Don’t Be Cruel, King Creole, Suspicion, Return to Sender and All That I Am. |

| VA: - The Big Beat - The Dave Bartholomew Songbook Great songs really do take on a life of their own and very often, unbeknownst to their creators, they’re discovered and interpreted by a wide range of different artists. One of the unexpected pleasures that Ace’s Songwriters series affords is underlining just how many styles and directions key compositions of yesteryear have taken. This collection of songs by New Orleans’ very own Dave Bartholomew is no exception as it weaves its way through 25 tracks of varied origins and labels. Two of Dave’s own recordings provide essential listening, led off by his original of the double-entendre-filled ‘My Ding-A-Ling’, which he later re-cut several times with different lyrics and which provided the template for Chuck Berry’s revival two decades later. Then you’ll find the much-revered parable ‘The Monkey’, which Elvis Costello memorably reworked some years back. Dave’s rich-toned narrative reigns supreme and is a cornerstone of his Imperial Records output. The set opens with ‘The Fat Man’ by Fats Domino and, although the technical limitations of that 1949 session are still obvious, the vibrancy of the performance is undeniable. Fats once told me that after Imperial-owner, Lew Chudd, received the master, he called and asked him to re-cut it, but a couple of days later he rang again to say he’d changed his mind and it was OK! Was that an understatement or what?! Other milestone Bartholomew productions featured here include Roy Brown’s hard-hitting version of ‘Let The Four Winds Blow’ (which Dave had first cut himself) and the gloriously prophetic ‘I’m Gonna Be A Wheel Someday’ as styled by Bobby Mitchell and co-authored by hillbilly singer Roy Hayes. As much as the multi-talented Bartholomew was writing, recording and producing in the Crescent City throughout the 1950s and beyond, his influence was being felt all over the musical world. This was clearly evident on the Johnny Burnette Trio’s rockabilly workout of Fats Domino’s 1955 charter ‘All By Myself’. Similarly, listen how effortlessly Jerry Lee Lewis slides into ‘Hello Josephine’ and how ‘I’m In Love Again’ fits Tom Rush like a well-worn rhythmic glove. Bartholomew was not aware at the time how influential and popular his music was in Jamaica. Neville Grant’s take on Chris Kenner’s ‘Sick And Tired’ provides ultimate proof that Dave’s big beat was perfectly adaptable to the reggae style. Another standout delight is the previously unissued cover by Annie Laurie of ‘3 x 7 = 21’, which Dave originally wrote and produced for Jewel King. The song became a benchmark in the Bartholomew catalogue and was successfully reworked as ‘21’ in 1954 by the Spiders, the group that cut the first version of ‘Witchcraft’, which Elvis Presley turned into a 1963 chart success, also included here. I must mention two other standouts: ‘Every Night About This Time’ by the World Famous Upsetters, which offers undeniable proof of Little Richard’s ability as a first-class blues wailer, and Dave Edmunds’ 1971 hit remake of “I Hear You Knocking’, which perfectly contemporised the song without diluting the memory of Smiley Lewis’ unbeatable original. The Memphis Jukebox Volume One is a fascinating insight into the musical tastes of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. This is the first ever release to contain the actual music contained on Elvis Presley's personal jukebox at his Graceland home. This unique collection allows listeners to experience and enjoy the music that Elvis Presley listened to whilst relaxing at home.
