Bob Lind - Finding You Again
Spread the news. Reclusive folk-rock singer/songwriter Bob Lind – he of the classic 1966 megahit ‘Elusive Butterfly’ – has just released his first studio album in more than 40 years! “Finding You Again” demonstrates conclusively that genius can continue to flourish, even into an artist’s advancing years.

Long known by music-business insiders for his self-destructive battles with the record industry, Bob Lind was, by his own admission, “poison to work with”. Now, thanks to veteran rock guitarist/producer Jamie Hoover, he has emerged with an album of new music that proves his craftsmanship has not only held up but improved and evolved since the 60s. Hoover’s sensitive, versatile production perfectly complements the songs – giving each cut the care and specific shading it deserves.

Clean and sober more than 35 years, Lind reveals a late-blooming but tangible personal and artistic maturity in these new songs. He retains the astonishing lyrical virtuosity that brought him critical acclaim when he was in his early 20s, but his melodic scope has broadened and become even more accessible. Amazingly, his voice is stronger and more expressive than ever.

The 13-song disc easily bypasses the criticism sometimes levied at singer/songwriters: that their songs all sound the same. Just contrast the rough-rocking self-condemnation of ‘How Dare You Love Me’ and the poignant, tentative soul-searching of ‘Maybe It’s The Rain’. Each song is different from the others, yet all contain the special stamp of one of America’s most passionate songwriters.

Lind’s fearless self-honesty is almost uncomfortable to listen to at times. He reveals his darkest corners without ever coming off as self-indulgent, as evident on ‘The Gravity Of The World’. But there’s also a lot of joy in this album. ‘Let It Go’, ‘Exeter (The Wedding Waltz)’ and the vigorous, percussive Caribbean-flavoured title song demonstrate that Lind has not become closed-up and bitter with the passing of time. And there’s a first-ever in the inclusion of a song Lind didn’t write: Peter Allen and David Lasley’s ‘Somebody’s Angel’.

Addressing the groundswell of excitement surrounding this release, Lind says, “It’s just endurance. That’s all it is. If you don’t quit and you don’t die, sooner or later the world – or at least a special part of the world – takes notice. I’m just grateful that Jamie and Ace Records came along at this perfect time.”

George Thorogood And The Destroyers - 2120 South Michigan Ave. 2LP
2120 South Michigan Avenue, home of Chicago’s Chess Records, may be the most important address in the bloodline of the blues and rock ‘n’ roll. That address – immortalized in the Rolling Stones’ like-named instrumental, recorded at an epochal session at Chess in June 1964 and included on the band’s album 12 X 5 – serves as the title to George Thorogood’s electrifying Capitol/EMI salute to the Chess label and its immortal artists.

Thorogood has been essaying the Chess repertoire since his 1977 debut album, which included songs by Elmore James and Bo Diddley that originated on the label. He has cut 18 Chess covers over the years; three appeared on his last studio release, 2009’s The Dirty Dozen.

On 2120 South Michigan Avenue, he offers a full-length homage to the label that bred his style with interpretations of 10 Chess classics. The album also includes original tributes to the Windy City and Chess’ crucial songwriter-producer-bassist Willie Dixon, penned by Thorogood, producer Tom Hambridge, and Richard Fleming, plus a cranked-up version of the Stones’ titular instrumental.

Produced by Tom Hambridge, three time Grammy nominee, 2010 Grammy winner the album also include featured guests Buddy Guy and Charlie Musselwhite, also both 2010 Grammy winners!

….this is the album George Thorogood was born to make!

This 2 LP vinyl set also includes a bonus track “Sweet Little Rock And Roller”

Paul Heaton - Acid Country
The warm, mellifluous voice of Paul Heaton often masks the jagged satirical content of his lyrics. From pointed political jabs like “The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death” to darkly comical love stories such as “Something That You Said,” Heaton′s work with the Housemartins and the Beautiful South has had countless listeners obliviously humming along to his biting wit. In the ′80s, Heaton was the leader of the Housemartins. Like the Smiths, the Housemartins were college radio all-stars in the U.S.; although the group′s jangly riffs and brainy, humorous songs couldn′t draw mainstream acceptance in America, the band shared a portion of the Smiths′ sizable cult of devotees. In 1986, the video for the Housemartins′ “Happy Hour” was selected as a Hip Clip of the Week on MTV; the rollicking single is still a favorite of′80s flashback shows on modern rock stations.

After the Housemartins disbanded in the late ′80s, Heaton then fronted the Beautiful South, a group that mirrored the Housemartins′ no-frills approach. Nevertheless, the Beautiful South expanded Heaton′s musical canvas, exploring jazz and even country influences. While many critics and student-run radio stations in the U.S. continued to laud Heaton′s talent, the Beautiful South became far more successful in England, where they charted several number one albums. The group called it quits in 2007 and Heaton shifted his focus to his solo career. Although Paul′s first solo release was back in 2001 [albeit under the pseudonym Biscuit Boy], it wasn′t until 2008, with the release of The Cross Eyed Rambler, that Heaton started putting out records under his own name.

Paul is currently finishing off his third solo album proper and training hard for his ambitious Pedals and Pumps tour, a cycling tour of 16 traditional English pubs in 20 days supporting the greenest form of transport whilst fighting the pub closures. This tour is now expected to cover over 900 miles. Summer will see the release of the new solo album and Paul appear at several of the country′s festivals.

Roky Erickson with Okkervil River - True Love Cast Out All Evil
Chemikal Underground offers the inestimable Mr Roky Erickson a fond, Glaswegian embrace: thrilled to be working with a bona fide living legend, we're honoured to have The 13th Floor Elevators' frontman allow us to release his first album in 15 years. That the album 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' also features Okkervil River on production and backing duties just makes the whole enterprise all the sweeter...

Roky Erickson's life and career is the stuff of darkly fantastic fiction: while his early teenage success with The 13th Floor Elevators pioneered psychedelic garage rock and ensured him a place at the table with rock's most influential artists, the thirty years that followed were a grotesque cavalcade of bankruptcy, drug addiction, mental illness, electro-shock therapy, deteriorating health and social withdrawal. That Roky has endured these hardships is a thing of wonder; that he has managed to not only endure but triumph, re-marrying his wife of 35 years (who now shares their home in South Austin), forging a relationship with his previously estranged son (who was instrumental in Roky's recovery) and ultimately returning to the studio to make music again is nothing short of miraculous.

The roll call of bands influenced by Roky's music is simply too long to list here: from REM to Spacemen 3, The Jesus And Mary Chain to Julian Cope, ZZ Top to Primal Scream - all of them and more owe a debt to the scuzzed-up garage rock of Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators. All the more exciting then, to have him return to the studio, this time with Will Sheff from Okkervil River producing and his band provide an impeccably sensitive backdrop for Roky's heart-rending vocals. The result, 'True Love Cast Out All Evil', is a profoundly moving and honest potrayal of a life, once blighted by addiction, incarceration and mental illness, but now rediscovered through the patient help and support of family and friends.

Not ones to be overly sycophantic with such things we at Chemikal have to come right out and say that the themes of loss and redemption on this album, Roky's vocal performances and the jaw-dropping back-story to its creation make 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' one of our most significant releases and we couldn't be more proud to be involved.

Ronski Gang - The Elevens
Legendaarinen The Ronski Gang julkaisee odotetun uutuusalbumin "The Elevens" 19.10.

Esimakua tulevalta pitkäsoitolta julkaistiin kesän kynnyksellä "All night
long"-singlen muodossa. Nyt takaisin kehään palannut bändi on kaikessa
hiljaisuudessa äänittänyt kokonaisen albumillisen energisiä rock-biisejä.
Edeltävästä virallisesta studioalbumista on ehtinyt vierähtää jo lähes kolmekymmentä
vuotta, kun 2005 julkaistiin tuplakokoelma vanhoista hiteistä.

Uusi levy "The Elevens" sisältää nostalgiannälkäisille alkuperäisille faneille
takuuvarmasti mieluista materiaalia, perinteiseen Ronski Gang-tyyliin.

"Levyn äänityksissä on pyritty saamaan
samankaltaista meininkiä kuin keikoilla, jotta levy ei kuulostaisi tekemällä
tehdyltä", sanoo bändin keulahahmo Ronski. "Lähes kaikki albumin biisit on bändin
omaa tuotantoa. Näiden lisäksi levyllä on kaksi lainabiisiä, jotka on jo keikoilla
muovautuneet bändin käsittelyssä kuin ne olisivat omia biisejämme", kertoo rumpali

Menestyksekäs historia

The Ronski Gang on suomirockin legendaarisimpia ja pitkäikäisimpiä yhtyeitä. Bändi
teki ensimmäiset keikkansa jo vuonna 1968. Kaksi vuotta myöhemmin tuli voitto Lahden
Suurlavalla järjestetyissä Suomen popbändikisoissa. Sen myötä keikkailu tiivistyi,
suosio kasvoi ja vuonna 1975 ilmestyi ensimmäinen albumi "Ronski & Exotic". Kolme
ensimmäistä levyä julkaistiin kyseisen bändin nimellä, kunnes lopulta nimeksi
vakiintui The Ronski Gang. 70-luvun lopulla ja 80-luvun ensimmäisinä vuosina
Ronskin ryhmä oli yksi Suomen suosituimmista live-kokoonpanoista, yleisöennätyksiä
rikottiin ympäri Suomea. Vuonna 1984 bändi jäi tauolle, mutta teki paluun
keikka-areenoille 90-luvulle tultaessa. 2000-luvun alusta lähtien bändi on
keikkaillut harvakseen tehden muutamia keikkoja vuosittain.

Nyt lukuisten fanien toive toteutuu ja odotus palkitaan, kun The Ronski Gang
aktivoituu todenteolla - 43 vuotta perustamisensa jälkeen!
Nykykokoonpanon peruskiven muodostavat kolme alkuperäisjäsentä, eli veljekset
laulaja Harry "Ronski" Sjöblom ja rumpali Hans "Hate" Sjöblom sekä basisti Kaj
"Misteri" Eklund. Tuplakitara -osastosta ovat jo vuodesta 2004 saakka vastanneet
Vesa Kääpä tai Mikko Rintanen ja Kiffe "Haten poika" Sjöblom. Alkuperäisen äijärockin kuninkaat ovat palanneet kovassa iskussa.

VA: - More Miles Than Money 2CD
More Miles Than Money: Journeys Through American Music is a book I researched and wrote between 2006-2008. In many ways I’d been waiting my entire life to write More Miles. Growing up in Mt Roskill – a working class suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, where there were no music venues, cinemas, pubs, nothing but churches and rugby fields – I took refuge in Mark Twain and Jack Kerouac’s adventures while AM radio (modelled on US radio) spun hits by Freddy Fender, the Amazing Rhythm Aces, Little Feat et al. I dreamed of escaping Auckland’s suburbs to ride Route 66 and Highway 61, ears and eyes open. Eventually I got to live my dream and More Miles is the story of those travels.

I didn’t know it back then but Kiwi radio was often playing music akin to that which Charlie Gillett played on his Honky Tonk radio show in London. Discovering Charlie’s book The Sound Of The City sent me scouring through secondhand bookstores in search of old copies of Cream, Creem and Let It Rock, where the writings of Charlie and other likeminded journalists appeared. I’d go so far as to say that a feature Charlie wrote on the great New Orleans producer-arranger Harold Battiste (Cream #5, Sept 1971) was what initially inspired me to want to search out the largely unsung heroes of American music.

At the same time as reading Charlie Gillett I was buying US imports on a variety of labels, with Arhoolie being my favourite. Mexican culture fascinated me, especially that which arose from the borderlands, the Tex-Mex/Tejano music. (Blame this on my dad taking me to see Sam Peckinpah’s westerns.) Discovering a bin full of Arhoolie Records in a downtown record shop introduced me to a treasure trove of magical Mexican American music and reading about Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz’s efforts to record the finest American vernacular music provided even more inspiration. Later on, Canyon Records would open my ears to how Native American culture celebrated its survival. Around the same time an uncle who loved jazz gave me Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” album – he found it too funky for his tastes. Talk about life-changing records: to this day Curtis remains my favourite US soul singer.

I dedicated More Miles Than Money to Charlie, Chris and the indomitable spirit of Curtis Mayfield. Tragically, Charlie died earlier this year. He, like Curtis, lives on as an indomitable spirit and continues to inspire me. This compilation is, again, dedicated to Charlie, Chris and Curtis: the three Cs who helped me hear America.

More Miles Than Money reflects on an America that made the mightiest music of the 20th Century. This compilation aims then to salute those who inspired me to ride US highways and document those I encountered as I wandered through honky-tonks, juke joints and barrios. Enjoy!
