Brother Claude Ely - Satan, Get Back! The restless white gospel of Brother Claude caught live in the early 50s by King Records. Thank the Lord! Brother Claude Ely was a hot Southern preacher who recorded for King Records in 1953, '54 and '62. No words, notes sleevewriter Tony Russell, adequately describe "the extraordinary power and fervour of Brother Claude Ely". Accompanied by The Cumberland Five and The Cumberland Four, unknown mandolin, guitar and occasionally steel guitar, bass and drums, Satan, Get Back! is country gospel at its most powerful (Ace Records).

Fairfield Four - Bells Are Tolling Founded as a family trio at the Sunday school of the Fairfield Baptist Church on Hermitage Avenue in the early 1920s, the quartet won a Colonial Coffee Company contest to appear on a regular radio spot at Nashville's powerful 50,000 watt WLAC. Sponsored by Sunway Vitamins, their CBS network hook-up broadcasts were heard throughout the United States. The quartet, who sang in a style that embraced both the older gospel jubilees and the newer emotional extemporisations, became extremely popular in the South and Midwest and acquired a prestige with the public no other quartet could match. By the 1940s, they were touring extensively and on the home front hosted major gospel extravaganzas at the Ryman Auditorium featuring the major luminaries of the day. Their first recordings were made in 1946 for Bullet on Lower Broad Street, Nashville. Seminal members in the group then were lead tenors Sam McCrary and John Battle, baritone Willie Frank Lewis, tenor George Gracy, basso Rufus Carrethers and his brother Harold. By the time the group had switched to the Delta label, McCrary and Lewis had recruited a super-group composed of baritone James Hill of Bessamer, Alabama, tenor/house-wrecker Edward Preacher Thomas from Louisiana, tenor Preston York from Atlanta plus basso-supreme Isaac "Dickie" Freeman from St John's, Alabama. With this all-star line-up the group became invincible in "Battles of Song" against other leading quartets. A rift occurred in 1950, and Thomas, Freeman and Hill defected to the Skylarks. McCrary struggled to keep a fully professional group on the road and by late 1958 was compelled to press-gang an excellent young group, the Silver Quintet of Gary, Indiana (who had recorded for Vee Jay in Chicago) and make them into the Fairfield Four. Under Hoss Allen's supervision the new group cut at least two sessions at Nashville's famous RCA Victor Studios in late spring 1960. The lead singers here are Sam McCrary, Clarence Mills and Joe Henderson (who soon had a U.S. Top 10 hit with the Brook Benton-like Snap Your Fingers). As a cappella was fast becoming a thing of the past, a three-piece rhythm section was added to the mix. The result was an exciting, fervent collection of both new and old standards on an album for Hy Weiss's Old Town label that, due to unwarranted poor sales, became as rare as hen's teeth. This long overdue release serves to justly rectify the matter. by Opal Louis Nations (Ace Records)

Five Blind Boys Of Mississippi - Something To Shout About The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi hold a high ranking in the realms of gospel groups from the Golden Age, having featured the distinctive hard tenor lead vocal of Archie Brownlee since the start of their recording career (as the Jackson Harmoneers) in 1945. They sang up a storm around the southern sates of the USA through the 1950s, having signed with Peacock Records in 1950, and their eight singles for the label yielded an R&B chart hit with Our Father in 1950. Two of the Blind Boys LPs for Peacock, Precious Memories and Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee are combined for this re-issue, having been collectors items for many years. The dynamic call-and-response vocals, laced with Brownlee s searing screams which would influence countless soul singers, served to inspire their audiences through the decade. Following the death of Brownlee in 1960, Henry Johnson carried on the torrid tradition, as can be witnessed in the opening eleven tracks of this anthology, with the great Archie Brownlee featuring on the other selections.

Five Keys - Out Of Sight Out Of Mind 2CD The Five Keys are one of the most revered vocal groups of the 50’s. They started and achieved legendary status with their recordings on Aladdin and Capitol. While their Aladdin recordings have been compiled many times, we found that their Capitol output was not that easy to find in its entirety, just a few albums with the hits, but leaving out many great tracks. Now, for the first time, in this package, you have all the sides they released on Capitol from 1954 until 1958 - 47 tracks, plus seven tracks backing jazz great, Jack Teagarden and two extra bonus recordings of the group on the Alan Freed Radio show. We believe that this is the greatest Five Keys Capitol package ever produced!

Johnny Cash - Hymns By Johnny Cash LP + CD 180 gram vinyl albums featuring a bonus CD of the same album. Although Johnny Cash did not always manage to "walk the line" himself, he still remained a devout Christian all his life and always maintained an interest in sacred music. Over the years he recorded eleven gospel albums of which 1959's Hymns By Johnny Cash was his first. Here Cash performs well-known hymns like "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "The Old Account", as well as six of his own religious-themed songs, including "Are All The Children In", written with Evangelist Oliver Greene, and "I Called Him", written with his brother Roy Cash.

Such was their influence that there probably would never have been an Everly Brothers without them! Here we have the four complete albums: Tragic Songs of Life; Ira & Charlie; Satan is Real and My Baby's Gone. Both, Tragic Songs of Life and Satan is Real are truly classic LPs of Americana. This is an amazing mix of country gospel and hedonistic honky tonk. |

Original Golden Stars Of Greenwood, S.C. - Southern Carolina Gospel - Reverend Norris Turner This is a CD of black quartet gospel (13 songs) by the Original Golden Stars of Greenwood, S.C., and solo singing with a choral group (13 songs), by the exciting lead voice of Reverend Norris Turner. Here is more than 76 minutes of soulful, vibrating gospel singing from the black southern church, recorded between 1958 and 1979. The music was originally released on local South Carolina record labels like Pitch and HSE and was then exclusively distributed in the black community. It is now reissued, for the first time, for the benefit of gospel lovers all around the world. This has been possible after the producer's visit to South Carolina in 2005 and after almost five years of research, to which some of the leading authorities of the genre have helpfully contributed.
