Johnny Cash - Hello, I'm Johnny Cash
The energy that Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three captured on the legendary Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison (MOVLP274) record can probably never be duplicated. That being said, Hello, I'm Johnny Cash comes very close.

This forgotten album is arguably one of the five best albums in the Cash discography. It is fueled by superb original Cash songs and well executed covers. It contains "See Ruby Fall" (co-written with Roy Orbison) and one of his best '70s hits, "Blistered." The lean, minimalist instrumentation of the Tennessee Three ensures the album with great rhythm, leaving Johnny Cash's voice as affective as ever. The album itself reached No. 1 on the country charts and No. 6 on the pop charts.

Although Johnny Cash did not always manage to "walk the line" himself, he still remained a devout Christian all his life and always maintained an interest in sacred music.

Over the years he recorded eleven gospel albums of which 1959's Hymns By Johnny Cash was his first.

Here Cash performs well-known hymns like "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "The Old Account", as well as six of his own religious-themed songs, including "Are All The Children In", written with Evangelist Oliver Greene, and "I Called Him", written with his brother Roy Cash.

Johnny Cash With His Hot And Blue Guitar is a 28-song collection of single and non-single classics during his Sun Records years, 1958-48.

“When one thinks of Johnny Cash’s recordings, one thing is certain. The Columbia years loom larger than any other phase. A star when he arrived in 1958, when he departed, he was an American icon.” (from the liner notes written by Rich Kienzle)

Representing the entirety of the musical performances released by the Man in Black on Columbia Records during his lifetime, JOHNNY CASH: THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUM COLLECTION is a 63-CD treasure trove that will appeal equally to longtime Cash followers, as well as new¬comers to his timeless body of music.
• 59 Columbia albums plus two new supplemental compilations make this the all-time, hands-down granddaddy of all Johnny Cash collections, period.
• 35 titles released for the first time on CD by Columbia/Legacy in the U.S.;

JOHNNY CASH: THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUM COLLECTION contains album rarities galore:

• Koncert V Praze – In Prague Live (1978 Czech recording, licensed to Supraphon, 1983)
• I Walk The Line and Little Fauss and Big Halsey original 1970 movie soundtracks
• The Christmas Spirit (1963) and Christmas – The Johnny Cash Family (1972) holiday celebrations
• and many more!

Checking in with his 59 original album titles for Columbia, from 1958’s The Fabulous Johnny Cash through the two Highwayman albums of 1985 and 1990 (with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson), this impressive box set is living history. It shows Cash in command of his country & western and gospel roots, blues, straight-ahead rock and roll, the traditional balladry and folk music he loved so dearly, and much more.

Adding to those seminal 59 albums are two new compilations:
• The Singles, Plus – a 2-CD, 55-song collection of single sides that did not originally appear on albums, plus guest performances on other artists’ albums, among them Bob Dylan, the Carter Family, mother Maybelle Carter, June Carter Cash, the Earl Scruggs Revue, Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, and Shel Silverstein (spanning 1958-85).
• Johnny Cash With His Hot & Blue Guitar – a 28-song collection of single and non-single tracks released during his Sun Records years, 1954-58, including “Hey Porter,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk The Line,” “Cry! Cry! Cry!,” “Ballad Of A Teenage Queen,” “Big River,” and more.

This massive work was painstakingly compiled by award-winning producers Gregg Geller and Steve Berkowitz, who have supervised Legacy’s historic Johnny Cash reissue program for over a decade. The prestigious box set takes its place alongside similar attention-getting Columbia career retrospectives by Miles Davis, Tony Bennett, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday.
• The physical box resembles the lift-off-lid design of The Complete Miles Davis Columbia Album Collection 70-CD box set issued in 2009.
• Each title is packaged as a mini-LP CD with its original artwork, including the five original gatefold albums in Cash’s Columbia discography.
• The accompanying will include a definitive 5,000-word liner notes essay by veteran annotator Rich Kienzle.
• Also included in the booklet is complete discographic information (songwriters, recording dates and cities, musicians, guest performers, producers, release dates, original catalog numbers and Billboard chart numbers for albums and single tracks, and more).

“Cash staked his claim and established himself at Sun; at Columbia, he defined himself for all time.” (Rich Kienzle)

Johnny Cash - The Fabulous Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash's first album on Columbia is also regarded as his best from his late fifties period. After he was released from his Sun Records contract, Cash unleashed his best material for The Fabulous Johnny Cash (1958). Maintaining his stripped-down, bare bones Country Blues style the album is simply all killer, no filler Classic Cash. Great songs like "Frankie's Man, Johnny", "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" and "I Still Miss Someone" proved to be staples in Cash's extensive body of work. Finally available on 180 gram vinyl!

Johnny Cash - The Singles 1955-1958 2CD
What more can really be said of 'The Man in Black?' The distinctive, basic sound of his deep baritone voice, stark, percussive guitar transcended any one genre and created his own sub-genre between the blunt honesty of folk, the rebellion of rock & roll, and the weariness of country.

Includes the classic hits 'I Walk The Line', 'Ballad of a Teenage Queen' and 'Don't Take Your Guns To Town'.

Johnny Cash is simply an institution in music history and is without doubt one of the most famous and respected country singers and American artists. This collection perfectly captures his journey to international stardom.

Johnny Cash - Unseen Johnny Cash
1-LP (one-sided, Cash portrait engraved on reverse side, 180-gram pressing) with a 16-page hardcover book. -- Think you've seen it all by Johnny Cash Think you've heard it all by Johnny Cash Think again! An innovative artist like Johnny Cash deserves an innovative package. Here, striking unpublished images from early in Cash's career are packaged with a one-sided LP of Cash on-stage in 1957 and 1959. The flipside of this limited edition LP features a portrait of Johnny Cash, engraved into the LP's audiophile-grade 180 gram vinyl. Packed in a 16-page hardcover book. A true collector's item! Unseen photos, rarely heard audio! Released to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Johnny Cash's birth! -- In 1955, at the dawn of his long career, Sun Records president Sam Phillips sent Johnny Cash to a nearby photographer, William Speer. Cash was fortunate because Speer was an innovative craftsman, influenced by vintage Hollywood photographers who used light in a dramatic new way. Speer shot photo sessions with Cash, between 1955 and 1958. A couple of images were published in the 1950s, but the rest were stored away... until now. Realizing that the photos deserved to be seen full size, Bear FamilyY lustrously restored them and packaged them in a 16-page LP-sized hardcover book, accompanied by a one-sided LP of rare live audio from the same era. The other side of the LP features a portrait of Cash engraved into the audiophile-grade 180 gram vinyl. And so now, eighty years after Johnny Cash was born in rural Arkansas at the height of the Great Depression, we see him in a new light. -- There are many Johnny Cash collectors, and this is Cash in words, music, and... above all... striking unpublished images! -- Also available as a digipak CD with a 28-page booklet.

Johnny Copeland - It's Me - Classic Texas Soul 1965-72 2CD
At the time of his death 15 years ago, Johnny Copeland was regarded as one of the world’s premier blues artists, a Grammy-winner with a strong body of work behind him. Success had come late, preceded by almost 30 years of working hard to make a living. In those years he recorded extensively, building a catalogue of 45s that did little to advance his career, despite their unbridled excellence. Many of those 45s fell into the hands of appreciative soul and blues collectors around the world, establishing Johnny as a cult hero whose work was always worth a listen.

Johnny had been working for a decade when he entered into a professional relationship with producer Huey Meaux in 1964, but it wasn’t until he came under Huey’s wing that his records found their way beyond Texas and onto bigger labels. Huey recognised Johnny’s talent and recorded him extensively. The records they made together form the basis of this important new 2CD set.

“It’s Me” is the most comprehensive collection of Johnny’s mid-60s to early 70s recordings ever assembled. Here you’ll find Huey Meaux-produced Wand, Suave, Jet Stream, Boogaloo and Wet Soul singles, material Johnny either sold to or cut directly for Kent-Modern in the early 1970s, two rare duets he recorded with South Texas R&B heroine Miss La Vell White as Johnny & Lilly, sides submitted to Wand for a proposed album that never happened, previously undocumented songs, and some fabulous vocal/guitar demos, some of which have never been issued before. None have ever sounded better than they do here, thanks to extensive vault research undertaken by me and my colleague Alec Palao in 2012. (Due to the disappearance or deterioration of a few tapes, fresh dubs were made and remastered from scratch.)

I first heard Johnny Copeland when my old pal Tony Cummings sat me down and played me ‘Dedicated To The Greatest’ almost 45 years ago. The power and soul in his voice made me an immediate fan. It’s been a true honour to work on a project that at last puts this classic material into the context it’s always deserved.

Johnny Horton - I'm A Fishin' Man
DVD with 24-page booklet, b&w, NTSC, regional code: 0, 28 tracks, playing time approx. 71 mns.

Never before seen performances by Johnny Horton. Rare recordings from collection of Jerry Hope. Ozark Jubilee Shows from the collection of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. A rare live concert.

When Bear Family began work on the Johnny Horton LP box sets back in the mid-1980s, just two videos traded hands among collectors: a grainy copy of 'I'm A Fishin' Man' and an 'Ed Sullivan Show' appearance. Now we have an embarrassment of riches. Finally, we see why Horton was, as his contemporaries said, a natural television performer. Amiable, good-looking, and breezily confident, he was ideal for what was then the new medium of television. Just the kind of guy you'd want to bring into your living room.

This DVD collects most of the known videotaped performances of Johnny Horton from very early in his career until just a few weeks before he was killed. There are 25 filmed performances and three bonus audio performances spanning the years from 1953 until 1960. He not only sings his biggest hits, 'North To Alaska', 'Johnny Reb', 'Sal's Got A Sugar Lip', 'Sink The Bismarck' and of course 'The Battle Of New Orleans', but he also performs songs that won't be as familiar to collectors, like 'Electrified Donkey', 'Be Honest With Me' (as part of a trio with Eddy Arnold and Molly Bee), and 'I'm A Fishing Man'. Even though there are no published interviews with Johnny Horton, on this DVD he talks with the hosts of the Ozark Jubilee show Red Foley, Bobby Lord, and Eddy Arnold. An essential complement to Bear Family's definitive history of Johnny Horton's recordings!

A NOTE ON FILM QUALITY: Bear Family has always made a sustained commitment to quality. This DVD was sourced from original films and kinescopes, now fifty or sixty years old. Some, especially those sourced from 'Jubilee USA' kinescopes, are not as clear as we would have liked, but they are the only known copies. We feel that their historic value outweighs the technical imperfections.

Johnny Otis - Johnny Otis Story Vol. 1 1945-57 Midnight At The Barrelhouse
There can’t be many people who have done more in the name of rhythm & blues than John Alexander Veliotes – Johnny Otis to his friends and fans.

Johnny has packed a lot into his lifetime: author, father, painter, radio DJ, TV host, sculptor, political activist, priest, farmer and much more besides. But whatever he’s known for, it’s the music he’s been making since the mid-1940s that has always endeared him to record collectors and marked him as one of the true originators of R&B.

Johnny turns 90 as 2011 draws to its close, and Ace felt that this momentous occasion should be marked by not one but two CDs in celebration of Johnny’s life and more than thirty years of recording activity. “Midnight At The Barrelhouse” is the first volume, and the repertoire embraces Johnny’s early years as a bandleader through to the peak of his worldwide popularity with his first and biggest Capitol hits. The second volume, “The Show Goes On”, will carry on with more Capitol classics and take us through to Johnny’s 1970s successes on Okeh/Epic and his own Hawk Sound label.

Johnny always downplayed his skills as a vocalist but, as can be heard throughout our programme, his singing was always as enjoyable and recognisable as anyone who ever fronted his band. He can also be heard on drums and vibes throughout the set. Even though he’s not always the featured artist, his role in the creation of each and every one of these tracks is always apparent. Our selections here also showcase the great musicians from his classic early bands such as Pete “Guitar” Lewis and Devonia “Lady Dee” Williams, plus vocalists of the calibre of Marie Adams, Bobby Nunn (and the Robins), Big Mama Thornton and Little Esther. Many of these tracks will be as familiar as family to Johnny Otis devotees, but we have managed to disinter several terrific unissued cuts from the 1950s to gladden the hearts of even the most ardent completist.

Johnny Otis - On The Show - The Johnny Otis Story Vol. 2 1957-1974
Johnny Otis celebrated his 90th birthday on 28 December 2011 – a true landmark for a man who has given most of his life to music. Ace is commemorating the event with the release of this collection, which together with “The Johnny Otis Story Vol 1” (CDCHD 1312) presents a concise overview of his entire career as a composer, musician, singer, producer, talent scout and songwriter.

“On With The Show” lives up to its title by picking up Johnny’s story from just before where the first volume left off, and carrying it through to the mid-70s – the point at which he stopped releasing new music and began diversifying his talents into cultural, spiritual and political areas. As did other R&B pioneers, Johnny had a lean time in the early and mid-1960s, at least as far as the charts went, but a string of Capitol 45s – including ‘Castin’ My Spell’, ‘Crazy Country Hop’ and ‘Mumblin’ Mosie’, all featured here – offer as good a representation of rock’n’roll as you’ll find anywhere. Many of Johnny’s King recordings are also invigorating, as those in this package will demonstrate. It’s hardly his fault that people were buying Fabian, Frankie Avalon, the 4 Seasons and the Beatles instead.

Johnny gave up recording for a few years before returning with the estimable “Cold Shot” album and the R&B/Pop hit ‘Country Girl’, both featuring the burgeoning talents of his young son Shuggie. They led to a full-on revival of the Johnny Otis Show and to further recordings for Epic, the best of which are featured here.

Things began to tail off again in the mid-70s in the wake of the disco boom. The big band funk of his movie-inspired ‘Jaws’ shows that he could have competed in the disco arena, should he have chosen to, but a man with as many things going on as Johnny Otis didn’t have to compete with anyone, and he just expanded his horizons elsewhere instead. Post-‘Jaws’, Johnny has been a radio DJ, ordained minster, artist, author and many other things. Most people would be delighted to have accomplished a fraction of what he has done. Unfortunately, we can’t all be the Godfather of Rhythm & Blues, but we can all enjoy his work for many years to come thanks to the fine compilations available on Ace and elsewhere.

If you don’t know Johnny Otis but want to start, this collection and the previous volume will serve as the perfect introduction to the man and his music.

Johnny Otis, one of the founding fathers of rock ’n’ roll, is next up in Dave Penny’s Architects Of Rock ’N’ Roll series, represented on a stellar collection straddling his multi-faceted career between 1945-1960.By sheer tragic coincidence, Dave had Otis lined up as a prime subject when planning the series over a year ago but January 17, 2012 saw the pioneering singer, songwriter, bandleader, talent spotter, impresario and disc jockey pass away at home in California, aged 90.

These carefully-selected and sequenced 83 tracks spread over three CDs now stand as an ultimate tribute to this pivotal figure. The son of Greek immigrants (real name Ioannis Alexandros Veliotes), Otis grew up in the predominantly black area of Berkeley, telling an interviewer in 1994, ‘Genetically, I’m pure Greek. Psychologically, environmentally, culturally, by choice, I’m a member of the black community.’ As such, he played a major part in creating a new sound for the growing audience of young urban blacks, starting out drumming in swing orchestras at 18. He formed a 16-piece big band in 1945, scoring his first hit with a glorious take on ‘Harlem Nocturne’.

CD1’s sublime smorgasbord of big band jazz and slinky blues, entitled Barrelhouse Stomp after the Watts club he opened in 1948, features further Otis orchestra titles alongside outings with Wynonie Harris, Joe Turner, Lester Young, (future Coasters) the Robins and Little Esther Phillips. In 1949, Otis started recording for the Newark, New Jersey-based Savoy label, scoring 15 Billboard R&B chart hits between 1950-52, including number ones with Little Esther & Mel Walker which dominate CD2’s Rockin’ Blues, joined by names including the Royals and Marilyn Scott. In 1952, Otis discovered Etta James and produced Big Mama Thornton’s original version of Leiber and Stoller’s ‘Hound Dog’, while enjoying a growing career as a songwriter, already presenting the rock ’n’ roll form and attitude soon to sweep the world. While starting his lifelong vocation as a disc jockey in LA, he became a talent scout for King Records, while scoring the late fifties hits (including 1958 US top tenner ‘Willie And The Hand Jive’) featured on CD3’s Going Crazy (1952-1960). Other names included on this most rocking of selections include Etta James, Little Richard, Pete ‘Guitar’ Lewis, Johnny Ace, Sugar Pie, Faye Wilson and Mr Goggle Eyes August.Johnny’s passion, benevolence, warmth and uncanny musical clairvoyance shines through every track on this magnificent set, capturing many of his achievements at this most crucial time in musical history. That aside, it also happens to be one hell of a party album for the summer.

Junior Wells & The Aces - LIve In Boston 1966
The recording quality is surprisingly good, especially when regarding the age of the tapes. This set delivers an intimate look behind the curtain in a small east coast club. Backed by one the greatest Chicago blues bands, ever, The Aces, this performance shows Junior in fine shape. There are a couple of well-known songs like 'That's All Right' or 'Messin' With The Kid'. Then he comes more adventurous on tunes like 'If You Gonna Leave Me' or 'I Don't Know' with extended soloing from Junior and Dave Myers. A beautiful and entertaining document presenting one of the key figures of Chicago blues, live on stage. A must for (almost) every serious blues collector! - Digipak. JUNIOR WELLS - voc/hca, LOUIS MYERS - gtr, DAVE MYERS - bass, FRED BELOW - drums.

Jussi Syren & The Groundbreakers - Shave And Haircut
uusi cd ilmestyy toukokuun 4 pv. Meillä levy myynnissä NYT !

Jussi Syren And The Groundbreakers on yksi arvostetuimmista
bluegrass-yhtyeistä Yhdysvaltain ulkopuolella. Bändin edellinen levy "From
Vyborg To L.A." sai hienot arviot mm. Country Music People-lehdessä.
Seitsemännellä levyllään "Shave And Haircut" yhtye pureutuu
bluegrass-ilmaisuun entistä juurevammin keinoin: Levyllä ei ole lainkaan
päällekkäis-äänityksiä, vaan koko albumi on taltioitu 100% ottona Porvoon
Mankku-studiossa ääninauhalle. Siloitellun ylituottamisen maailmassa tämä
on harvinaista.

Syrenin ja banjisti Tauri Oksalan omien kappaleiden lisäksi levyllä
kuullaan harvinaisia lainoja mm. Buzz Busbyltä ja Hylo Brownilta. Levyn
kolmastoista raita "Tragedy Of Lake Bodom" kertoo hyytävän tositarinan
parhaaseen murha-balladi tyyliin.

Yhtye tekee kuuden keikan levynjulkaisu-kiertueen pääsiäsen aikaan.
Kiertue alkaa PopJazz-konservatorion Galleriasta 20.4. klo 19.30
(Hämeentie 133 HKI)

Jussi Syren And The Groundbreakers - The Old Home Place Ain't The Same Anymore LP +CD
Bluegrass-yhtye Jussi Syren And The Groundbreakersin kahdeksas albumi "The Old Home Place Ain´t The Same Anymore" ilmestyy Snowflake-merkillä 15. lokakuuta. Levy on luontevaa jatkoa viime vuonna Goofin' Recordsin julkaisemalle, kansainvälistäkin huomiota saaneelle "Shave And Haircut"-CDlle.

Yhtye jatkaa edellisten levyjen tapaan juurevan akustisilla linjoilla.
Levy on äänitetty kahdessa päivässä Mankku-studiolla Porvoossa

Laulaja-mandolinisti Syrenin lisäksi yhtyeeseen kuuluu banjisti Tauri
Oksala, kitaristi J.P. Putkonen, sekä basisti Kari Hella. Edellisellä
levyllä vieraillut viulisti Nelli Ikola on tämän levyn myötä siirtynyt
vakiokokoonpanoon. Levyn kansitekstit ovat amerikkalaisen bluegrass-DJ Dennis Jonesin käsialaa.

Justin Townes Earle - Nothing's Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now
Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now, the new album from celebrated singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, will be released March 27 on Bloodshot Records. This is Earle’s fourth release and follows his critically acclaimed 2010 album, Harlem River Blues, which debuted #47 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and led to a “Song of the Year” award at the 2011 Americana Music Awards. In celebration of the release, Earle will perform a series of special shows this winter followed by a full U.S. headlining tour this spring including an appearance at SXSW.

Produced by Earle alongside longtime collaborator Skylar Wilson, the 10-track album was recorded completely live with no overdubs over a 4-day period at an old converted church recording studio in Asheville, NC. Of the new record, Earle comments, “I think that it’s the job of the artist to be in transition and constantly learn more. The new record is completely different than my last one, Harlem River Blues. This time I’ve gone in a Memphis-soul direction.”

And that's true enough. While Harlem River was a love letter to his new hometown of NYC, this new album is a gorgeous, sometimes lush sometimes sparse, paean to a city that's given so much to the world musically. The sweat, the horns, the soul.....
