Marv Johnson - I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose
Our collector-oriented series of officially authorised Motown releases continues with this first-time-on-CD reissue of Marv Johnson’s “I’ll Pick A Rose For My Rose” album, as first released on the British Tamla-Motown label in 1969. The first CD there has ever been of this great artist’s Motown recordings, the collection features a further 15 tracks, including five previously unissued rarities from the vaults.

Marv Johnson was there at the birth of Berry Gordy’s fabled Detroit empire with his Tamla single, ‘Come To Me’, in 1959, which Gordy placed with the established United Artists label for national release, using the proceeds of the deal to finance recording sessions. Marv remained at UA until 1964, when he returned to the Motown fold.

Over the next few years he released three tremendous singles on the Gordy imprint – ‘Why Do You Want To Let Me Go’, 'I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose' and the ultra-stompy ‘I Miss You Baby (How I Miss You)’ – but found it hard to re-establish himself, at least in the USA.

It was a different story here in the Motown-hungry UK, where ‘I’ll Pick A Rose For My Rose’ reached the Top 10 early in 1969. To satisfy demand, US Motown dug into what they had in the can on Marv and sent over enough tracks to create a similarly titled LP for the British market. The album was never issued in the USA. The first 11 tracks on this CD represent that long-player in its entirety, mastered from the original stereo tapes used by EMI to manufacture the album in 1969.

The next nine tracks are presented in recording date order. They include the four numbers that have surfaced on multi-artist CD collections in recent years, plus a clutch of exclusive previously unissued masters. Some of these have been circulating on underground bootlegs for a while, but here they are superbly mastered from brand new digital transfers of the precious original tapes. In other words, our CD collects together Marv Johnson's complete Motown recordings from 1964 to 1971.

Motown took particular care when it came to their single mixes, and for the many aficionados out there who prefer them, the final six tracks comprise the original punchy mono mixes of Marv's three Gordy 45s.

Like our recent “The Satintones Sing!” and “Dance With The Contours” CDs (and our Monitors collection, out next month), “I’ll Pick A Rose For My Rose” is compiled and annotated by renowned Mojo award-winning Motown historian Keith Hughes.

By the time Playboy was released in July 1962, it was the third Marvelettes album in just eight months, althoughboth of the predecessors had struggled for acceptance.Playboy is a much more consistent album than Please Mr Postman, despite lacking that number one smash, and unlike Smash Hits of 62 features an abundance of material written with the group in mind, such as Playboy,Beechwood 4-5789 and Someday Someway.Whilst the achievements of The Marvelettes would eventually be surpassed by The Supremes, this album showsthey were worthy of their lofty mantle in 1962 - Motowns first breakthrough act.

Memphis Slim - Rockin' The House- The Best Of The R&B Years 2CD
The Best Of The R&B Years – Dazzling R&B piano pioneer Memphis Slim is the subject of the latest release in Fantastic Voyage’s highly-popular Definitive Collection series of blues sets.

Compiled and annotated by blues authority Neil Slaven, the two discs of Rockin’ The House straddle Slim’s post-war years up until he became one of the foremost figures in the early ’60s folk-blues revival, spotlighting his top-notch R&B band. The 50 tracks take in recordings he made for labels such as Hy-Tone, Miracle, Premium, Mercury, Peacock, United, Vee-Jay, United Artists and Strand, and include all seven of his R&B hits Born John L. Chatman in Memphis in 1915, Slim cut his musical teeth playing anywhere from levee camps to Arkansas roadhouses then Beale Street bars, mentored by Roosevelt Sykes. He arrived in Chicago in 1937, initially bootlegging whiskey, said to have been a pimp, playing piano to pay for his gambling until cutting several singles and hooking up with Big Bill Broonzy in 1940. After World War Two, Slim started leading his R&B band, which, at times, boasted the great bassist-songwriter Willie Dixon and future Blues Brother Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy.

The compilation starts in 1946 with ‘Mistake In Life’, Slim’s first release on the local Hy-Tone label, followed by further tracks for the label including the rollicking ‘Slim’s Boogie’ and trademark melancholic blues template ‘Cheatin’ Around’. He first encountered Willie Dixon recording for the Miracle label, the pair sparking their relationship on the blistering ‘Rockin’ The House’ and sublime ‘Lend Me Your Love’. From here the highlights come thick and fast: hits for Miracle, including chart-topping ‘Messin’ Around’, ‘Blue And Lonesome‘, ‘Help Me Some’, ‘Angel Child’, sonorous Premium release ‘Mother Earth’, ‘The Come Back’ (predating the stop-start groove of ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’), the autobiographical boogie of ‘Harlem Bound’, sax-enhanced outings such as ‘Train Is Comin’’, ‘Worried Life Blues’ (as covered by Keith Richards), lascivious Nick Cave fave ‘Grinder Man Blues’, the steaming vamp of ‘Steppin’ Out’ (later Eric Clapton’s showstopping showcase with John Mayall) and aching ‘Nobody Loves Me’ (the original title by which he first recorded the classic ‘Every Day I Have The Blues’, as made famous by B.B. King). The early 1950s tracks with Murphy’s riveting guitar to the fore are also represented, through to later sessions for Vee-Jay and three tracks from the 1959 Carnegie Hall concert with Muddy Waters which marked the start of the blues’ burgeoning acceptance by white audiences. From levee camps and roadhouses to Beale Street and white clubs, Slim was working his way up and was early in the charge as blues ambassador to Europe, recording several albums there before returning to Chicago to cut an exemplary batch of songs including ‘Lonesome (Blue Blues)’, ‘Four Walls’, ’Big Bertha’ and ’I’ll Keep Singing The Blues’. Based in Paris from 1962 until his death in 1988, he left a voluminous and captivating recorded legacy, of which one of its most fertile and seminal stretches is featured on this stellar set.

Merle Haggard - The Complete '60s Capitol Singles
Merle Haggard is a household name, one of the best-known country music singers of all time. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the awards, honors, and accolades in his long career are too numerous to list. Haggard is simply one of the greatest country music stars in the history of the genre.

From “Swinging Doors” in 1965 until the end of the decade, Haggard had an incredible string of hit records. “The Fugitive” (b/w “Someone Told My Story”) was his first #1 single, and was a composition by Liz Anderson, Lynn Anderson’s mother. “I Threw Away The Rose” b/w “Loneliness Is Eating Me Alive” went to #2 on the charts in late 1966. “Branded Man” went to #1, and was backed by a remake of an earlier Tally number (co-written by Joe “Red” Simpson), “You Don’t Have Very Far To Go.” “Sing Me Back Home” b/w “Good Times” was another #1 smash, in the fall of 1967. “The Legend Of Bonnie And Clyde” b/w “I Started Loving You Again” was yet another chart topper.

As told in an interview with the collection’s liner notes author, Haggard wrote “Workin’ Man Blues” because he “needed my own ‘Folsom Prison Blues,’ I needed a song that would express my way of life—I wanted it to be a blues song, and I wanted it to be in the key of A.” Astute musicians will note that the song was originally recorded in the key of A flat, but regardless, “Workin’ Man Blues” became a blue-collar anthem, and is still one of his most popular songs. When the song was released in June 1969, backed with “Silver Wings,” it again topped the chart at #1.

This collection closes with Merle Haggard’s final single of the 1960s: “Okie From Muskogee.” The song drew strong reactions as Haggard and The Strangers were testing it out on audiences before recording it, and according to pedal steel guitarist Norm Hamlet (Strangers 1967-present), “The first time we played it, the audience just went crazy. We knew it was going to be huge.” The single was indeed another #1 smash, but it was also something else entirely. It was the song that would change Merle Haggard’s career.

Meteors - Doing The Lords Work
THE METEORS started thirty years ago as a reaction against the soft rockabilly that was popular at that time, and they have now evolved to become the acknowledged "Kings of Psychobilly".

Their audience has continually expanded, and includes not just psychobillies, but everybody from rockabillies and punks, to bikers, and most alternatives. They are the original creators of Psychobilly Music, and although they have spawned hundreds of imitations, THE METEORS are proud to be the only pure Psychobilly band ever. Their songs are inspired by their personal experiences and interests; Horror, Perversion, and Death in general. They list their hobbies as motorbikes, rock’n’roll, and burying the living; amongst their heroes are Michael Myers, Charles Manson and Mark Chapman the man who shot John Lennon.

They have now made no less than 40 official albums, and countless singles, not to mention dozens of compilations and re-issues. Many were made in their own recording studio, "In Heaven" a fully working pro studio used by 100’s of bands including some very famous household names and lead-man PAUL FENECH has also released six successful solo albums. (They have also featured in many films and numerous TV shows) Worldwide sales have increased steadily over the years, and they have toured almost continuously to support these releases.

Their live show is wild and addictive, (they have done it over thousands of times in fact this year passing their four thousand five hundredth) and has been seen in just about every country in the world, including Japan, several tours of America, and every major city in Europe and Scandinavia even spending a sell out week in Israel, Everybody is welcome at THE METEORS show, and the band make a point that THE METEORS Live is a political or religious free zone. People should come to enjoy the music, and to wreck if they are brave enough! It's wild and sweaty, but nobody gets seriously hurt.

They are supported by a flourishing fan base, with thousands of supporters worldwide, who are kept in touch by the website www.kingsofpsychobilly.com which is updated daily with tours, band news and new merchandise, and there are several internet web sites devoted to them. And they receive daily e-mail from fans from the 4 corners of the earth. Although there have been line-up changes over the years, (PAUL FENECH being the only original member) the search for the perfect combination is now over. THE METEORS are a known name, experienced, professional working band, with an established audience. Their most recent release is "Hell Train Rollin’" from 2009.

ROCKABILLY- YHTYE MIKE BELL & THE BELLTONES JULKAISEE UUDEN "PAYBACK"- ALBUMIN 1.6 2012

Goofin´ Records julkaisee helsinkiläisen Mike Bell & The Belltones -yhtyeen uuden albumin "Payback" 1.6.2012. Euroopan mittakaavassa tällä hetkellä eturivin rockabilly-yhtyeisiin kuuluva bändi julkaisi ensimmäisen pitkäsoittonsa "Scream & Holler" vuonna 2010. Levy sai suurta huomiota roots-musiikin piireissä ympäri maailman ja sen herättämän kiinnostuksen vuoksi bändille on tullut buukkauksia alan isoimmille festivaaleille Englantiin, Espanjaan, Ruotsiin ja Saksaan. Lisäksi bändi on parin vuoden ajan tehnyt klubikeikkoja Sveitsissä, Itävallassa, Ruotsissa Irlannissa, Venäjällä ja Hollannissa. Kotimaan keikkarintamalla yhtye on tarkoituksella pitänyt rauhallisempaa tahtia ja tänä vuonna bändi tekee Suomessa keikkoja vain noin kymmenen.

Levynjulkaisukiertue:

1.6 High School Hop -Festival; Västerås, Ruotsi

2.6 Real Gone Wild Party; Kaisaniemi, Helsinki

6.6 Screamin´ Festival; Barcelona, Espanja

29.6 Hultsfreed Hayride -Festival, Ruotsi

Levyn 14:sta kappaleesta 13 on laulaja Miikka Siiran (a.k.a. Mike Bell) omasta kynästä. Siiran omista biiseistä huokuu tyylitajuinen 50-luvun rock´n´ roll ja country, mutta myös vivahteita vanhoista pop-melodioista. Uusi levy läpiluotaa koko Mike Bell & The Belltonesin musiikillisen kirjon ja pitää sisällään monta eri roots-musiikin aluetta. Levyltä löytyy rockabillyä, rock´n´rollia, bluesia, countrya, 50-luvun poppia sekä jopa garagevaikutteinen levyn nimikkobiisi "Payback".

Bändillä on ollut levyillään ja live-esiintymisillään uskomato n taito saada ihmiset kiinnostumaan musiikistaan yli genrerajojen. Keikoilla ei suinkaan nähdä pelkkiä rasvatukkia, vaan yleisö koostuu useiden eri musiikkityylien kuuntelijoista . Ýksi yhtyeen historian kohokohtiin kuuluu ehdottomasti levytyssessio sekä keikat 50-luvun rockabilly-legenda Huelyn Duvallin kanssa. Yhteistyötä on varmasti luvassa jatkossakin, sillä artisti itse pyrkii saamaan Belltonesin taustalleen jatkossakin Euroopan keikoillaan. Tämän lisäksi yhtye on keikkaillut yhdessä monien tämän hetken kirkkaimpien juurimusiikki-art istien, kuten J.D McPhersonin ja Nick Curranin kanssa.

Mimi Roman - I'm Ready If You're Willing
1-CD Digipak (4-plated) with 25-page booklet, 25 tracks, playing time approx. 62 mns. -- She was a Jewish girl from New York who attended the same school as Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond, but wanted to be a country singer. Her first record was a rare Hank Williams song that he wrote for Ray Price. Mimi performed on big country radio jamborees, changing her name from Rothman to Roman, and telling people that she was from California. Some of her songs have appeared in compilations from Bear Family and on other labels. This is the first full-length CD devoted to her music. -- Owen Bradley, head of Decca-Records in Nashville for years, would joke that he was charged with 'a country singer who wanted to go pop, and a pop singer who wanted to sing country.' The country singer was Patsy Cline. The pop singer was Mimi Roman. Changing her name from Rothman, she recorded for Decca in New York and Nashville, but never got the all-important break. She even worked the grueling Philip Morris caravan, touring with legends like Carl Smith and Ronnie Self, and recorded right on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry. Somehow, it didn't work out for her, although her records have become highly collectible. For the first time, here is her story and here are her finest records in one place. A little untold gem of Fifties musical history. Mixed bag of high quality Honky Tonkers, Patsy Cline style strollers, teenage smoothies ala' Connie Francis plus obscure and completely unknown pop-pearls like "Dance With Me (Cha Cha Cha)" Great Discovery!

Minits - Follow Your Heart - The Sounds Of Memphis Recordings
From the 1950s right through to the 1970s Memphis was a record town, awash with studios, record companies and distributors. Its industry proved to be an irresistible magnet for artists from all over the South and often beyond, especially black artists. Country acts would head the few hundred miles up the road to Nashville, and the West Coast was a hub for rock’n’roll’s golden dream, while Memphis – sometimes known as Soul City USA – attracted aspiring soul or R&B performers. The closer you were to Memphis, the greater the pull.

The Minits were from not too far away in Montgomery, Alabama. The three-girl vocal group we celebrate in this CD headed to Memphis and released a mere three singles on the Sounds Of Memphis label. Their records were moments of pure pop-soul magic. Their second 45, ‘Still A Part Of Me’, commands a price of well into three figures due to its dancefloor appeal.

Left in the vault were five further numbers which we have released slowly over the past few years. ‘Hook Line and Sinker’ is a Dan Greer tune with a snappy pop hook that must have been a candidate for a single but remained unissued until recently. ‘Natural Reaction’ and ‘Stepping Stone’ are both in a similar high quality pop-soul vein. The trio’s version of Aretha Franklin’s ‘Pullin’’ is another thing altogether – the rhythm section hits a groove and takes this one straight to the dancefloor. ‘If You Don’t Like My Apples (Don’t Shake My Tree)’ was found in the vaults only last year and has become my favourite Minits discovery so far. It’s a slamming slice of double entendre sister funk that should make it into DJ sets as soon as it starts to become known.

For some reason their records failed to catch on and the Minits never became the stars their records suggest they should have been. The girls are almost completely forgotten today, yet the music they left behind reveals an act that should have achieved more. It may well have been that, despite top of the range production values and high quality songs, there is just too much of the south left in the recordings for them to have sat comfortably on pop radio. Then again, it may just be that they were never championed by the right people at the right time. What is for sure is that their recorded legacy makes for one hell of a listen.

A lot of money was clearly spent on styling and taking wonderful photographs of the girls in a bid to represent them as stars. It wasn’t to be but those wonderful photographs now allow us to give you not just some great music but a stunning booklet to go with it.

Miss Mary Ann & the Ragtime Wranglers - Danger Moved West
Here’s the long-awaited new release of Miss Mary Ann & the Ragtime Wranglers “Danger Moved West”. It contains 16 songs: catchy ones writ-
ten by Miss Mary Ann herself, some by Californians Carl Sonny Leyland and Dave Stuckey plus some covers like the title track. Style of the
album: rockabilly / rock and roll. The recordings have been made with vintage equipement while playing live in the studio. The band managed to
catch a much stronger live feel onto tape then on their earlier albums. Easy for the band this time, because all of the studio sessions took place
in between tours through Europe and concerts in the USA and Russia. This time Miss Mary Ann decided to write and record more danceable
songs, like “Little Ole You”, “You Made a Hit” and “Do You Wanna Rock”; songs that are just asking to be picked-up by the dj’s. These are alter-
nated with some mid-tempo songs in which Mary Ann’s stunning voice stands out even more; just listen to “Strange Things” or “Make the Most
of It”.
Guest musicians on the album are New Ranch Girl “Pepper”, singing superb harmony vocals at 2 tracks, plus “Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer”
Carl Sonny Leyland at the piano on his own song “Honey” and one extra. Both guests already shared stage with the band at various festivals;
they fit in just perfectly.

Monitors - Say You - The Motown Anthology 1963-1968
You have to feel for those artists that didn’t get the breaks at Motown. Most that didn’t were every bit as good as those that did. Their lack of success was the result of being some way down a pecking order dominated by acts such as the Temptations, Four Tops and Supremes. Even the second wave of higher profile acts had to battle to be heard above the big noise made by the hits of those groups. With hindsight, the Monitors hardly stood a chance.

Their lack of real success is no reflection of how excellent Richard Street, Warren Harris and Maurice and Sandra Fagin were as a group. Richard Street’s pleadingly soulful lead was good enough to win him a gig with the Temptations in 1971, where he replaced the group’s original lead singer Paul Williams. The material the Monitors recorded, some of which Street co-wrote, was frequently supplied by some of Motown’s biggest names, including Smokey Robinson and Mickey Stevenson. They were recorded under the same conditions as their bigger counterparts, and the end results were invariably as satisfying. That their discography can boast merely a couple of modest soul chart hits is a mystery that even Sherlock Holmes would be at pains to unravel.

Chart hits or not, the Monitors have always been revered by the Motown collector cognoscenti, and a CD devoted to their extremely fine recordings has long been overdue. As part of our series of officially approved compilations from the Motown vaults, Kent is delighted to present ‘Say You!’, an extensive overview of the group’s time at the company. Their one album, “Greetings! We’re The Monitors”, is featured in its entirety in stereo. Motown diehards will be delighted to know that the same tape used to manufacture the original UK vinyl LP has been used to master our CD.

The album, which includes stereo mixes of all their V.I.P. and Soul A-sides (and some Bs), is joined here by two exceptional non-LP flipsides and a staggering 12 previously unissued tracks spanning the group’s entire tenure with Motown. Ten of these have never been issued before in any shape or form, while the versions of ‘Crying In The Night’ and ‘Cry’ are considerably different to those available on other CDs. All of these unissued masters are featured in their original mixes, made in the 1960s at the time of their recording. Whatever it was that caused Motown to pass over these tracks for release in the 1960s, it wasn’t a lack of excellence.

“Say You!” is a superb addition to Kent’s small but growing list of vintage Motown collections, a list you can expect to be added to very soon.

Perusjäseniltään kuusimiehinen The Moontones on toiminut vaihtelevalla
aktiviteetilla aina noista rockabillyn boomi-vuosista saakka.
Kokoonpanon muodostavat Leif Knief (laulu), Pekka Miettinen (laulu ja
kitara), Petteri Littu (kitara), Jari Pätsikkö (basso, foni), Timo
Qvintus (foni) ja Reijo Kolu (rummut). Solisteja lukuun ottamatta koko
remmi hakkaa käsillään tahtia ja osallistuvat taustalauluun.
Vahvistusta settiin antavat fonisti Arto Mutanen sekä pianisti Hannu
Elonen.

Kummitusmusiikkia! Sillä nimellä tällaista tavaraa takavuosina
kutsuttiin. Pelin henki on jump & jive sekä r&b, eli rock and rollia
halunnut soitella omaksi ilokseen. Äärimmäisen tyylikkäästä
lopputuotteesta kuuluu läpi lajityypin pitkä harrastus sekä asiaan
hartaudella paneutuminen. Niitä kaikista tutuimpia coverointeja on
vältelty sutjakkaasti, eikä bändi pyri rikkomaan mitään nopeus- saati
volyymiennätyksiä. Hyväksi vertailukohdaksi käy KnockOut Greg Blue
Weather -yhtyeineen.

Roy Brown on
toisella esityksellä (10), biisin tempo on lähes pelottava.

uusiotuotannosta on kuultavissa, kuinka tarkkaan lajityypin aihepiirit
on tutkailtu. Perinnettä kunnioitetaan, mutta sitä ollaan myös
valmiita viemään eteenpäin. Raidan (2) tekijä on mystinen ”Boba”, nimi
joka löytyy jokaiselta uusioraidalta. Itse biisi liikahtelee säröisän
riffin varassa letkeästi jumppaillen. Kierrokset nousevat selvästi
raidalla (7), rockaavan jumpin meno maistuu makoisalta nytkin, eikä
seassa ole mitään jäähdyttelyfiiliksiä. Raita (11) on puolestaan
silkkaa noveltya ja keskitempo-esityksessä on oikein reippaasti kieli
poskessa -meininkiä. Setistä irtoaa vielä komea r&b-slovari (3, Zuzu
Bollin?), joka viljelee vahvaa tunnelatausta. Blues-numero (8, Jimmy
Hughes) on uhkaava, jopa hieman pelottava biisi,
jota kannattelee vallan mainio säröllään oleva riffi. Ja onhan täällä
yksi duettokin: siivu (9, Little Anthony & Blues Imperials?) liikkuu
keskitempoisena ja vähän alakulotunnelmissa, mutta toimii hienosti.
Vierailevana solistinaan vahvaääninen Kati Markkanen, jonka kanssa
duetoi Leif Knief.

Jos nyt aloit pohtia tarvitsetko tämän levyn, niin katso mitä otsikko
sanoo: ”Yes You Do!”

Mr. Breathless & Varjokuva - Live At Parola
Single on nimeltään Extrapallo.
Varjokuva feat. Mr. Breathless - loppuvuoden 2012 tulevia yhteiskeikkoja on luvassa mm.:

Mr. Gasser & The Weirdos - Hot Rod Hootenanny
Hot Rod Hootenany featured an eye-popping, full-color cover illustration by Roth. Upon release in 1963, it created quite a stir among surf/hot rod aficionados and entered the lower reaches of the Hot 100. Falling out of print after the crest of the hot rod craze, this album quickly became a prized collectable. Out of print for decades, Sundazed Music is gassed to roll this LP out of the garage and back onto your turntable! Pressed on competition-ready vinyl and compact disc, packaged in a retina-searing reproduction of the original Big Daddy artwork, it will go from zero to 33 1/3 RPM in seconds! FLOOR IT!!!

A true "renaissance man," Ed "Big Daddy" Roth excelled in a number of pursuits. Artist, cartoonist, car-customizer and pinstriper were but a few of his specialties. Growing up in California, surrounded by the surf and hot rod movements of the late '50s, Roth's expansive imagination was set in motion and popular culture would never be the same.

Working closely with Ed Roth, who assumed the nom du disc "Mr. Gasser," Fred Rice carefully selected vocalists and musicians for the recording session. Gary Usher assembled and led the vocal talent, which included Jackie "Robyn" Ward, Chuck Girard, Richard Burns and Darlene Love. And how's this for a guitar line-up: Glen Campbell, Jerry Cole and Howard Roberts! On drums you've the great Hal Blaine. Meanwhile, Cliff Hils anchored the bass position and Leon Russell played piano while Steve Douglas wailed on sax. What a fabulous group of "Weirdos"! The combination of A-list players and a top-notch studio produced a superior-sounding LP, every bit the sonic equal of contemporary recordings from stars like the Super Stocks and the Beach Boys.

Mr. Gasser & The Weirdos - Rods N' Ratfinks
When it came time to follow up the success of Hot Rod Hootenanny, Capitol's Fred Rice wisely stuck to the arithmetic of the first LP: great Ed "Big Daddy" Roth-inspired songs + the best session musicians + Capitol Studios = another outrageous LP! Rods n' Ratfinks continued the party started on the first album under the direction of Gary Usher. Piling in the Weirdos' woodie for this road trip were Glen Campbell, James Burton and Billy Strange on guitar, Ernie Freeman on piano, Carol Kaye and Steve LaFever on bass, Earl Palmer on drums and Steve Douglas on sax. Gary Usher, Richard Burns and Chuck Girard returned to do vocal duty. And, of course, "Big Daddy" himself created another screaming-technicolor-suitable-for-framing LP cover! Looking at the illustration, if you peep past the wacked-out jalopy, you'll spy Rat Fink hanging at least two as he shoots the curl. Take that, Sponge Bob!

Mr. Gasser And The Weirdos - Surfink !
originally released in 1964 on Capitol Records.

In April 1964, Mr. Gasser and the Weirdos reconvened in Capitol Studios to record the third installment of their surf rod trilogy, Surfink! It was their hottest album yet, combining clever parody songs like "Surfer Ghoul" with knock-out instrumentals like "Midnight Run" and "Santa Barbara" that stand alongside the best singles of the surf era. Fuel-injecting the Weirdo wagon this time around were Jerry Cole, David Gates and Neil Levang on guitars, Leon Russell on piano, Steve LeFever on bass, Earl Campbell on drums and Steve Douglas on saxophone. The vocal department again featured Gary Usher, Richard Burns and Chuck Girard.

The sonic quality of the original recordings is astounding! Saxman Douglas rips, honks and wails with absolute authority while the guitars of Cole, Gates and Levang cover the gamut of classic six-string tones. Palmer's drum kit and cymbals sound so crisp you'd swear he was right there in the room and LeFever's bass anchors the bottom beautifully. The album is a testament to vintage analog recording and one that could also serve double duty as an audiophile test LP.

Myrna Lorrie - Hello Baby
1-CD Digipak (4-plated) with 28-page booklet, 22 tracks, playing time approx. 52 mns. -- A Canadian legend. Her first contract took her to Nashville in 1955 when she was fifteen, and when Elvis Presley was being signed to RCA. She too was signed to RCA. Her ultra-rare 1950s and '60s recordings have never been reissued. Now the best of them have been carefully remastered for this definitive CD. -- Myrna Lorrie was from the remote Canadian city of Thunder Bay north. Mentored by greats like Hank Snow and Cowboy Copas who saw her talent, she was signed by the man who discovered Loretta Lynn, and made her first recordings for Abbott, where Jim Reeves and the Browns started, and like them she too departed for RCA. After RCA sessions in New York and Nashville produced some great music breakthrough, she returned to Canada. A television star in Canada for years, Myrna Lorrie helped new singers just as she'd been helped. Among them was Shania Twain. 'It would have turned out differently, if I'd stayed in the States,' Myrna Lorrie told Todd Everett, who wrote the notes for this compilation. 'But I was patriotic and stayed in Canada.' -- Now it's time for the rest of the world to discover what Canadians already know: Myrna Lorrie is a Juke Box Pearl. Amazing collection (6 unreleased) of top notch 1950s Hillbilly, Honky Tonk and some Pop-crossovers like the Tiki Bar cult classic "On A Little Bamboo Bridge". Produced by Fabor Robison & Chet Atkins. Nathan Abshire - Master Of The Cajun Accordion
After some 20 years, Ace Records’ Nathan Abshire 2 LPs-on-1 CD has been totally revamped by John Broven. With stunning new mastering, the track sequencing better reflects the recording chronology in the distinct periods with the Pine Grove Boys and then the Balfa Brothers, with the addition of ‘French Blues’ to complete the Swallow output. The now-sumptuous booklet features an essay by Lyle Ferbrache based on his original research with members and families of Abshire’s Pine Grove Boys; a comprehensive song analysis with sterling contributions from Ann Savoy and Neal Pomea; a first-ever attempt at a discography with personnel; many vintage photographs; and LP and label scans. The end result is one of the most listenable and enjoyable Cajun CD releases ever, by one of the music’s most revered musicians.

Lyle Ferbrache on his landmark research on Nathan Abshire’s Pine Grove Boys:

During my first visit to Louisiana in 1987, the Tower record store in New Orleans had just opened and I bought a handful of Swallow 45s. The one that stood out was Nathan Abshire and his Pine Grove Boys performing ‘Offshore Blues’ with Thomas Langley vocalising. I liked the record so much I bought 10 copies from Floyd’s record shop in Ville Platte and gave them to friends. Who was this band? In the period that followed I bought various artists Cajun LPs and was always frustrated by the lack of comprehensive liner notes – this was in the pre-Internet days.

By this time Cajun music had really gotten a hold on me. I was so fascinated by the sound of the music I sold my near-complete collection of Excello records and went on a Cajun buying spree. I started going to Louisiana more often and soon tracked down the only surviving member of the original band, Ernest Thibodeaux, along with Bernella Frugé, wife of the band’s first steel guitarist, Atlas Frugé. With their help I was able to piece together the early history of the band … but there was nothing on Thomas Langley. The more musicians I met, the more convinced I was that I had made the right decision to concentrate on Cajun music.

My quest to research the poorly documented recording information on Nathan Abshire and his Pine Grove Boys led me to publish the magazine Louisiana Music with Andrew Brown in 2010. For the first time, accurate recording and personnel information had been accounted for. But the story only took in the band’s early years at O.T., Hot Rod and Khoury’s from 1949 through 1958. My next mission was to do the same research for the Kajun and Swallow recordings of the 1960s and 70s. My big break came when I obtained the phone number of Helen Langley, Thomas’ wife. I was saddened to learn that I was a little too late; Thomas had died a few months before. Fortunately, Helen was a big fan of the Pine Grove Boys and had most of the important information I needed to complete the band’s history. Over the years of doing interviews with her I was able to understand the band and its members, from their time recording for J.D. Miller’s Kajun label in Crowley to their final recordings at Swallow Records with Floyd Soileau in Ville Platte.

I am very proud of Ace for taking on this historically important project and giving it the respect it deserves.

Nick 13 - Nick 13
NICK 13 is a singer/songwriter whose work recalls the vintage American sounds of hillbilly, honky-tonk and classic California country music from the middle of last century. While this vanishing world echoes in his music, he puts a modern twist on it all his own.

Nick 13’s self-titled debut album for Sugar Hill Records demonstrates the sound and artistic vision that has already earned him invitations to Stagecoach, Austin City Limits and SXSW.

Nick 13 is best known around the world as the singer, songwriter, guitarist and founder of the band Tiger Army. His fans have come to expect powerful, heartfelt music that combines the strongest elements of the past with forward-thinking vision. The band is capable of multi-night stands in major cities and appeared in the New York Times, Spin and on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

A solo album of pure Americana / country where rock bombast of any kind is notably absent may seem strange from someone who has led a “psychobilly” band across four albums and several international tours during the past decade, but Nick 13 is simply retracing his own course of musical discovery.
