| Fireballs - Exotic Guitars From The Clovis Vaults Norman Petty was way ahead of the game back in the 50s when he realised that he could double his strike rate simply by releasing recordings under the separate identities of the Crickets and Buddy Holly, even though the recordings were basically made by the same group of musicians. This was a tactic he followed with the Fireballs to an even greater extent, changing their name according to fashion or the whim of the day. They began as simply the Fireballs, then became Chuck Tharp & the Fireballs, returned to being the Fireballs again before becoming Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs, which was then distilled down to just Jimmy Gilmer, before finally returning to being the Fireballs once more. Petty's penchant for multiple identities has actually served us very well for our new giant 30-track Fireballs project. Added to a host of never before released instrumentals by the band are further tracks they cut under the alias of Guitars Inc and another 18 recorded while they were masquerading as the String-A-Longs in 1968. By then the original String-A-Longs, who Petty also recorded at his Clovis studios, had disbanded some three years previously. Petty had had the foresight to register the String-A-Longs name to himself and so he decided to mop up any residual interest in the group with an LP titled “Wide World Hits”. This was actually recorded by the Fireballs although released under the String-A-Longs name. Fortunately for us the Fireballs never turn in anything less that an excellent performance no matter who they are supposed to be, so their String-A-Longs recordings are just as valuable as anything else they cut during their long and distinguished career. As well as the complete “Wide World Hits” album we also include here ‘Popi’, a rare 45 that was also released under the String-A-Longs moniker on Atco. To this we add a further five titles – ‘Dock Of The Bay’, ‘Light My Fire’, ‘Love Child’, ‘Hold Me Tight’ and ‘Stormy’ – which were recorded for the project but have lain forgotten in Petty's Clovis vaults ever since then. At the heart of the String-A-Longs sound was the sweet-toned Magnatone amplifier. Fireballs lead guitarist George Tomsco reflects today, “It’s kind of strange that the String-A-Longs sound should begin and end with the Fireballs. We first used Norman’s Magnatone amplifiers back in 1959 when we recorded ‘Nearly Sunrise’. The amp produced a very sweet tone which was just too pretty for me back then – I was 19 just wanted to rock’n’roll!” Petty subsequently pressed the String-A-Longs into using the amp on ‘Wheels’ after the Fireballs had declined to record the tune. It went on to sell millions and George Tomsco is still kicking himself. The Guitars Inc project was another Petty experiment from around 1963. The rare ‘Little Toy’ and ‘Holiday Love’ have never been on CD before and we are delighted to include them here. There was even more good luck when our diligent researcher Alec Palao discovered a dusty old tape box in the Clovis vaults with Guitars Inc scrawled on it. This proved to be another great find and we are thrilled to be able to present the bright and breezy ‘Mexican Firefly’ for the very first time anywhere. All of the titles on “Exotic Guitars From The Clovis Vaults” are taken from Norman Petty's expertly crafted master tapes and they sound as fresh and pristine as the day they were recorded. | Francoise Hardy - Midnight Blues - Paris London 1968-1972 The events of May 1968 across France signalled the end of the yé-yé era and a new seriousness in French pop. Unlike perky domestic stars such as Sheila or France Gall, Françoise Hardy had always had a moody image – in reality she was chronically shy. A keen astrologer, this is something she has always been quick to blame on her star sign, Capricorn: “You have the longest nights, the longest absence. When the sun is in Capricorn, you are not there. You are below the horizon. You are invisible.” 1968 was also the year she retired from public performance after a rare tour of Britain. Françoise had set up her own independent Asparagus Productions in late 1967. Initially, her old label Vogue continued to distribute her records, but in 1969 Françoise signed a deal with the small Sonopresse imprint, where she would stay until 1972. For many of her fans this is the most intriguing and exciting part of her career. From the beginning of her career and into the early 70s, Françoise recorded quite extensively in English, German, Italian and Spanish, but that material is not easy to find these days. This collection, recorded variously in Paris and London between 1968 and 1972, comprises tracks drawn from her albums “En Anglais”, “One-Nine-Seven-Zero” and “Françoise Hardy” (aka “If You Listen”) and offers a very welcome opportunity to hear her perform in English. 1965’s ‘All Over The World’ had given Françoise her only UK Top 20 hit. Although she couldn’t follow it up in Britain, France remained loyal and she was still a huge star there when she made her first full, specially recorded English language album “En Anglais” in 1968. “One-Nine-Seven-Zero” – released worldwide in 1969, but never in France– was recorded at several different sessions in London and Paris, and with a number of disparate collaborators. Though its variety of studios and arrangers could have made it a patchwork, the album is held together by a clutch of songs written and produced by Tommy Brown and Micky Jones. The opening trio – ‘Song Of Winter’, ‘Magic Horse’, ‘Strange Shadows’ – are especially strong, with warm, full arrangements by Jean-Pierre Sabar. Jones and Brown also contributed ‘Bown Bown Bown’ to 1972’s “Françoise Hardy”, recorded at Sound Techniques in Chelsea with folk rock producer Tony Cox. Sound Techniques was a bit like a social club for folk musos from Joe Boyd’s Witchseason stable. The Trees album had been recorded there, as had albums by Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. The latter’s Gerry Conway and Pat Donaldson played on the sessions for Françoise’s album, along with Richard Thompson and Fairport drummer Dave Mattacks. There are precious few enough albums from this golden period of folk rock as it is; this release gives long overdue exposure to a unique coming together of the British folk underground and a French musical legend. | Freddie Hughes - Send My Baby Back One of the best performances on Freddie Hughes’ 1968 album “Send My Baby Back” – the first legitimate reissue of which is now available on Kent – is a song entitled ‘Natural Man’. It is Aretha’s classic reworked from a male perspective, but the tune’s title pretty much sums up Hughes’ abilities and his incredible voice. Though he came from a church background that many soul singers share, Freddie’s gift was one hundred per cent his own, an untutored and breathtaking instrument, with a flexibility and range that makes him completely distinctive. When married to the compelling arrangements of producer Lonnie Hewitt, it’s a match made in 1960s soul heaven. Let’s get one thing straight right away. Our Freddie is NOT the same artist that sang ‘Oo Wee Baby’, or recorded for Vee-Jay or Brunswick. With all due respect to that fellow, he couldn’t hope to scale vocal heights such as those represented on this disc. The lingering fondness for Freddie’s best-known number, the charming and completely soulful mid-tempo ballad ‘Send My Baby Back’ means that many believe it to have been a bigger hit than it actually was (#20 on Billboard R&B in July 1968). Freddie’s artistry is clearly on display on every track of this classy longplayer and if I had to choose a favourite song, by a narrow margin it would have to be the Bacharach-ish lilt of ‘He’s No Good’, a guaranteed heartbreaker any way you slice it. Adding bonus tracks to the album’s rather brief running time was easy in theory, not so in practice. Freddie’s background with San Francisco duos: the Impression-istic Soul Brothers with Ken Pleasants, the storming, searing Casanova II with Wylie Trass, was familiar enough, but the rights to certain cuts were in flux. Just a couple of years ago, there was a breakthrough, which came along with the exciting discovery of several unissued songs from the Soul Brothers. These superlative items, derived from Freddie’s first prolonged period in the studio at Music City of Berkeley, include early arrangements of tunes recorded later, as well as the unknown – and fabulous – ‘She’s Coming Back’ and ‘Station L-O-V-E’. All this additional material gives us not just an intimate glimpse of Freddie’s evolution as an artist in the San Francisco Bay Area, but is some damn fine soul music in its own right. by Alec Palao (ACE Records) |

| Freddy King - Goes Surfin' Syd Nathan, impresario of Cincinatti's King Records, was the epitome of the old-school indie record label owner. Always hustling, Nathan regularly beat the odds to release hit after hit in multiple genres. He'd try anything if he thought it might work, or more precisely, if he thought it would make money. After Chess Records turned down guitarist/vocalist Freddy King several times for sounding too much like B.B, King, Nathan thought that sound might actually be sellable and took a chance, signing Freddy to his Federal subsidiary label. They hit paydirt with an instrumental titled "Hide Away," which reached #5 on the R&B Chart and #29 on the Pop Singles Chart. Encouraged by the single's success, Nathan released a full album of King's instrumentals, Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King. (See what Nathan did there with the title, slipping in a reference to Freddy's big hit single? Always be closing, my friends, always be closing.) The album sold well and helped make Freddy a bankable touring act. While others would have been satisfied to move on to the next project, Syd sensed untapped potential in the LP. Meanwhile, several artists on the West Coast were making noise in the brand new surf music scene (and by "making noise," I mean selling records). Syd didn't have any surf music artists under contract, but he DID have Freddy King. Surely, Syd surmised, if the kid's went nuts for Dick Dale's guitar instrumental workouts, they could do the same for Freddy's. While it may not have happened EXACTLY like that, King Records did release Freddy King Goes Surfin', an album containing the very same songs (in precisely the same running order) as Let's Hide Away... with crowd noise dubbed over the music. Did the ruse work? Though it didn't sell as well as the original, Freddy King Goes Surfin' did find an audience. Like Bo Diddley Is a Gunslinger, the album's title is such a preposterous premise that it surely snagged many buyers on that fact alone. And no amount of ersatz cheering and cocktail glass tinkling could cover up the six-string genius of King and his almighty Texas tone. Need proof? Fellow Lone Star blues maven Billy F. Gibbons picked Freddy King Goes Surfin' as one of his Top Ten Favorite Blues Albums of All Time. As for Sundazed, we know not to mess with a good thing. | Gene "Bo" Davis - Let´s Coast Awhile This is the first ever compilation of Gene Davis who has laid down some great rockabilly & country tracks plus who led a band that is still spoken about on the west coast of America in almost reverential tones. He recorded some great boppin hillbilly songs for King Records in the mid 1950s, before he moved to California and started playing rockabilly. Under the name of Bo Davis he recorded some great rockabilly songs backed by legendary Eddie Cochran. More rocking recordings like Curfew” , “No Rockin & Rollin” followed and soon he was discovered by Buck Ram to appear with his band in some movies like “Carnival Rock” and “Rock All Night” under the name of The Blockbusters. The talented singer and guitar player Gene Davis soon became the house band for the famous LA club The Palomino backing many big names. His band over the years included several soon to be stars. This album includes all of his rocking sides, some country boppers, some duets with Chuck Miles, Faron Young, The Collins Kids, Glen Campbell and finishes with his only chart success “"Oh Those Texas Woman"”. |

| George Jackson - Don't Count Me Out - The Fame Recordings Vol. 1 As a songwriter, George Jackson is a Southern soul giant. He is revered by artists and soul fans alike for his prolific output of high quality soul songs and he was at the peak of his powers during his tenure at the FAME studios from 1968 to 1972. Rick Hall, who owned FAME, knew that if a top soul artist was coming into the studio and some songs were needed, then George was the man. He was valued so much as a songwriter that his career as a singer was sadly neglected, and only two George Jackson 45s were issued during his long association with FAME. Luckily for us, Rick Hall held on to a truckload of the other recordings George cut at FAME which have remained in the vaults until Tony Rounce, Dean Rudland and Alec Palao plucked them from the shelves for this terrific release and several future volumes. I love George Jackson’s singing. His voice has a fragile vulnerability and, combined with his honest, no histrionics delivery, you genuinely believe that George lived the ups and downs of love and life that he writes about in these beautifully crafted Southern soul songs. And I’m not alone in appreciating George’s voice, when I asked songstress Dorothy Moore, she smiled and said “I love me some George Jackson”. George also remembers with pride getting complimented by Wilson Pickett on one of Pickett’s trips to FAME. “Wilson said to me ‘It’s from your heart’, [then] he told Rick Hall and Jerry Wexler ‘Y’all should cut a record on this guy, he’s great’.” Some of these tracks were used for pitching the songs to the artists and as ‘guide’ tapes in the studio once chosen. Southern soul fans will recognise ‘I Can’t Leave Your Love Alone’ and ‘The Feeling Is Right’ released by Clarence Carter, ‘Search Your Heart’ and ‘Back In Your Arms’ recorded by the Wicked Pickett and Candi Staton’s funky ‘Evidence’. If you’re as completely obsessed as I am, you can listen to original by George and follow it up with the released version by the some of the best Southern soul artists of the day. A personal favourite from George’s two Fame singles is the churning ‘Find ‘em, Fool ‘em and Forget ‘em’, so it’s a treat to hear George on an earlier, bluesy incarnation of that song here called ‘3-F Blues’. But best of all is the side which Kent have quite rightly used as the lead track of the CD, George’s own rendition of stunning deep ‘Search Your Heart’. To use that old cliché, it’s worth the price of the CD alone. The surprise of the CD is the quality of the songs that were not snapped up at the time. The emotive deep ‘Let’s Stop Hurting Each Other’ and the catchy uptempo ‘Stuck On Her’ are just two “shelved” sides that would have proudly graced any top soul album of the day. These tracks are all high quality studio recordings that could (and should) have been issued at the time. So you could say that this is the delayed release of George Jackson’s debut Fame album, and as such is one of the most important Southern soul CDs of the year. By Martin Goggin (Ace Records) |

| George Jackson - The Fame Sessions Ah, the joy of vinyl – especially the new Ace Records high quality releases. The 180 gram test pressing landed on my desk with a thump and, once placed on the deck, the needle was placed on the first groove with a satisfying thrum. So you can only imagine how much better the experience got as the sound of Fame’s classic house band of David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett and Roger Hawkins emerged from the speakers. They were behind George Jackson as he demonstrated the power of a new song he had written. Any fan of Southern Soul will know that ‘I’m Just A Prisoner’ became a classic for Candi Staton but, as we have proved time and again over the last few years, George Jackson was more than capable of delivering his own songs. Mississippi-born, George had his first break in music working alongside Dan Greer at Goldwax Records in Memphis, writing songs and releasing a single in a duet with Dan. In 1967 he auditioned at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, where proprietor Rick Hall was looking to replace his top writer Dan Penn, who had moved to Memphis the previous year. In George, Rick found someone who not only wrote prolifically but could sing as well. As an artist, George released two singles on the Fame label and one more Fame-recorded side on Verve. However, it is quite likely that no-one wanted him to be too successful in that role, because his songs were far too important for Fame’s star artists and others who passed through the studio looking for some Muscle Shoals magic. In short order, he wrote hits for Candi Staton, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter and then turned out a #1 for the Osmonds. However, George wrote more songs than he could place with other artists and he also recorded non-stop. Over two CD volumes we have showcased his Fame recordings and we are now proud to present you with his first ever vinyl album from these sessions. In the style of a classic late 60s or early 70s soul album, it features 12 stunning tracks, two of which are (for now) exclusive to this release. It’s difficult to pick out favourites but I have a lot of time for ‘I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew’ (which we’ve discovered was written with James Govan in mind) and ‘Get It When I Want It’, another track written for Candi Staton. These included 'Heartbreak Hotel' and Johnny Horton's 'I'm A One-Woman Man' (a 1988 hit when George re-recorded it for Epic). The wilder side of Jones's life is well known; this collection assembles 35 of his most aggressive performances from Starday and Mercury...many of them featuring the classic east Texas honky tonk sound. | George Jones - The Complete United Artists Solo Singles 32 A&B sides of Hardcore 60s Honky Tonk. “Country music is like a religion to me!” George Jones once told liner notes author Holly George-Warren, and listening to this collection of the great singer’s United Artists singles from 1962-1966 will make a believer out of you. The diversity of material is astounding. You hear Jones master all the flavors of vintage country: lovelorn ballads, inspirational gospel, uptempo honky-tonk, humorous novelty numbers, old-timey murder ballads—even holiday and Western songs. United Artists was the third home for George Jones’ output since his 1954 debut on the Starday label in his native Texas. His manager and producer Harold “Pappy” Daily signed him to United Artists (UA) following a stint at Mercury, where he scored his first #1 hit, “White Lightning,” in 1959, followed by 1961’s “Tender Years.” Most of the UA recordings transpired in Nashville, with Jones backed by Music City’s A-team: guitarist Grady Martin, bassist Bob Moore, drummer Buddy Harman, pianist Pig Robbins, and Hal Rugg on steel guitar, Tommy Jackson on fiddle, and Kelso Herston on electric 6-string bass. The Jordanaires provided the background choruses, part of the Nashville Sound that Jones adopted for his hardcore country. Right out of the box at UA, Jones hit the jackpot again with his third chart-topper, “She Thinks I Still Care” backed with the gorgeous ballad, “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win,” also a hit. Both sides of the plaintive single pointed the way to the kind of material that in Jones’ hands would become his signature style, leading to such landmark recordings as 1980’s “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” “She Thinks I Still Care” almost didn’t get cut, however. It was penned by Dickey Lee, the Texas songwriter whose “Patches” would be a smash for Clarence Carter in 1970. Songwriter and producer Jack Clement, who’d left Memphis’ Sun Records behind to operate Gulf Coast Recording Studio in Beaumont, Texas, pitched it to Jones. But it wasn’t an easy sale for Clement, whose publishing company handled the song. George told him, “I don’t think I like it too much. It’s got too damn many ‘just becauses’ in it. Clement tweaked it, making it a bit more country, according to Bob Allen, who recounts the story in his 1984 Jones biography. “After [Clement] agreed to relinquish half the publishing royalties to George and the hard-bargaining Pappy Daily, George finally relented and recorded it,” writes Allen. Soon after its release, “She Thinks I Still Care” lodged at the top of Billboard’s C&W chart for six weeks. By year’s end, the smash had been chosen 1962’s “Favorite Country Music Single” by the nation’s DJs in Billboard’s annual poll. |
