King Curtis - Wail Man Wail ! - The Best Of King Curtis 1952-61 3CD The Best Of King Curtis 1952-1961 Saxophone titan King Curtis gets the stellar showcase he deserves on Dave Penny’s latest career-defining set for Fantastic Voyage, continuing the roll which has seen the label raise the benchmark for knowledgeable, expertly-annotated compilations. Over three discs and nearly 100 tracks, Wail Man Wail! traverses the unmistakable tones of the late Curtis Ousley after he arrived from Texas in New York City in 1952, winning amateur night at Harlem’s Apollo before embarking on a recording career which took him to several seminal independent labels and bands with the likes of Lester Young and Lionel Hampton. He settled in New York for 17 years, declaring himself King Curtis and quickly making a name for roaring instrumentals and enhancing countless sessions. With the assistance of K.C. expert Roy Simmonds, Dave Penny has excelled himself in providing both beginner’s guide and record collector’s magnet, starting with Curtis’ riproaring role in the earliest days of rock ’n’ roll on CD1, collating outings under his own name for labels such as RPM, Gem, Apollo, DeLuxe, Atlantic/Atco, ABC-Paramount, Everest and Sue, also encompassing his time with Alan Freed’s rock ’n’ roll orchestra. Titles include his debut, ‘Tenor In The Sky’, ‘Honeydripper’, ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Wicky Wacky’. Discs 2 and 3 chart some of his many memorable recording sessions from between 1952 to 1957, then 1958 to 1961, respectively, names including Solomon Burke, the Willows, Roy Gaines, Neil Sedaka, Wilbert Harrison, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Waylon Jennings, Lionel Hampton, Bobby Darin, Chuck Willis, the Avons, the Willows, Mickey & Sylvia, the Nitecaps and obscurities such as Washboard Bill. King Curtis was yet another name to fall victim to an early demise, in his case stabbed to death in 1971 after challenging two junkies using drugs outside his Manhattan apartment. Just the groin-rasping solo on ‘Jest Smoochin’’ is enough to convince anyone with a heart and soul that they’re in the presence of greatness. There are scores of similar moments on Wail Man Wail!, the latest instalment in Fantastic Voyage’s The Architects Of Rock ’N’ Roll series, and an exemplary tribute to one of the musical giants of the last century.

King Drapes - Kortit On Jaettu Jo vuonna 1997 perustettu timanttinen rockabilly -yhtye King Drapes julkaisi uuden levyn!

King Salami And The Cumberland Three - Fourteen Blazin' Bangers !! London’s newest Rhythm’n’Blues-Punk sensation – okay, so they are perhaps our only Rhythm’n’Blues-Punk outfit – are making fun times where ever they go. With a repertoire encompassing and influenced by many of the greats of the ’50s and ’60s you won’t be able to help but move your feet when the Cumberland 3 are blasting out of your speakers. The King howls like Screaming Jay Hawkins with Bo Diddley chasing his coat-tail whilst Andre Williams tries to offer up some of his bacon fat. This man never stops shakin’ and twistin’ and groovin’ while the Cumberland Three (former members of the Parkinsons, Ulcers, and Chinese Lungs) play their own branded mix of vintage rockabilly, desperate rock’n’roll and a bit of soul with fire, energy, gusto and fun! Their five singles have sold like the proverbial hot cakes and this, their debut album, is sure to do the same. This is an old fashioned singles band, one that puts out one seven inch after another, all designed, and guaranteed, to get you dancing like a madman. Fourteen top tunes on one album is a sure fire dance floor filler at any party. Whether live on stage or on record this is one of the most exciting bands in rock’n’roll right now – they are guys who know what it takes to make us move. Equal parts rock and soul, with a dash of funk and a healthy dose of blues and soul. Whether you’re at a club show or in your living room you won’t be able to help yourself from shaking and shimmying

Kitty In A Casket - Horror Express Meow, finally it's HERE: the hot debut album from the sharpest cats since there are CASKETS! Only since scarcely one three-quarter year KITTY IN A CASKET are excisting. KITTY IN A CASKET play their completely own mixture of Punkrock, Psychobilly and Horrorpunk. Comments: “The first time we met Kitty, we knew she was a star in the making. Then when she said she was starting a band, we thought OK, even if the band isn't top notch, it will still do well. Their songs are well-crafted and I dare you not to sing along with their infectious choruses.” DAR (THE DEEP EYNDE) “I am always interested in what newer bands are bringing to the scene, and in my opinion, KIAC are something different. Its rare a band captures my attention enough to make me take notice, but these guys have done just that. They have found a sound that works, and should definitely be watched very closely in the future. Well done guys, and the best of luck. You have my vote.” Mad Dog Cole (MDC/THE KREWMEN)

Koffin Kats - Our Way & The Highway After more than a thousand shows and eight years of international touring, "the road" is where Detroit-based Koffin Kats now call "home." The Koffin Kats take the Motor City attitude and mix it into a toxic blend of booze, tattoos and thumbing psychobilly punk rock 'n' roll. The trio kicked things off in June 2003 with a mission to not stop for anything. Vic Victor (Lead Vocal, Upright Bass) joined forces with long-time friend Tommy Koffin (Guitar) and started laying the groundwork for the sonic assault known as The Koffin Kats. They put together songs with subjects ranging from Sci-Fi to dealing with the horrors of the real world. With Eric "E Ball" Walls on drums, they began by playing for beer in small local bars, eventually made their way out of the Midwest. The next couple of years proved to be up with numerous North American tours and down with numerous drummer changes. During this time they released their first three albums — S/T (2003), "Inhumane" (2005), and "Straying from the Pack" (2006). These releases and the tours helped get the name of "The Koffin Kats" noticed in the wide world of punk and psychobilly. In 2007, Vic and Tommy hooked back up with Eric for their fourth album, "Drunk in the Daylight" (2008), and began making the Kats what are now known for today...NONSTOP TOURING AND MAKING EVERY SHOW A PARTY. With their love for their fans and for the road they set out to play everywhere someone was willing to listen. In recent years, they have been able to make a name for themselves in Europe as well and have been included on tours with some of the tops acts in psychobilly, such as Mad Sin, Nekromantix and The Meteors. In 2009 they released "Forever For Hire" and at year's end Tommy left the band to pursue a normal life. Shortly thereafter, EZ Ian Jarrell took over the guitar and hopped on tour. While on the road, the trio worked on material for a split album with The 12 Step Rebels, which was released in the spring of 2011. Now The Koffin Kats have signed with Sailors Grave Records for the release of "Our Way & The Highway", a culmination of all things KK with their rich history, road scars, and outlaw psycho punk blood running furiously through every ear-ripping track.

Kristian - Kristian / Indian Girl Hylättyään iskelmätähden uran Kristian teki vuosina 1972 ja 1977 kaksi erittäin kunnianhimoista ja onnistunutta englanninkielistä pitkäsoittoa. Esittäjän taiteilijanimeä kantava pitkäsoitto Kristian ilmestyi vuonna 1972. Vuonna 1977 ilmestynyt Indian Girl puolestaan julkaistiin artistin omalla nimellä Bengt Huhta. Kaupallisesti englanninkieliset levyt menestyivät ilmestyessään vaatimattomasti, mutta vuosien myötä niistä on muodostunut kiiteltyjä ja haluttuja keräilyharvinaisuuksia. Albumeilla esiintyy joukko maamme eturivin muusikoita, muun muassa Antero Jakoila, Ronnie Österberg, Hasse Walli, Pekka Pöyry ja Esa Kotilainen. Albumit ilmestyvät nyt ensimmäistä kertaa cd-muodossa, Rocket Recordsin julkaistessa molemmat pitkäsoitot samalla cd-julkaisulla. Levyn kansilehdestä löytyy Huhdan kirjoittamat saatesanat.

Kulkukoirat & Kalle Kaaja - Matkamies Maan Kalle Kaaja on tullut tutuksi Wagtails-yhtyeen sekä Caravan orkesterin solistina. Tangomarkkinoillekin Kalle on osallistunut kaksi kertaa. Kulkukoirat -yhtyeen suosio suomalaisen tanssikansan parissa on vankkumaton. Lähes 20 vuoden olemassaolonsa aikana yhtyeessä on soittanut pitkä lista suomen eturivin muusikoita.

Kustom Kings - Kustom City U.S.A. Prior to becoming a full-time Beach Boy and well before he wrote the song that made the whole world sing, Bruce Johnston was a key member of the West Coast music scene. In 1959, while still in high school, Johnston played piano on friend Sandy Nelson's hit single, "Teenbeat." This opportunity kicked off an incredibly prolific period for the young musician. Johnston recorded under his own name as well as many group names, playing with the cream of the California session personnel, The Wrecking Crew. He also made records with his friend Terry Melcher until Melcher moved on to pursue record producing full time. Johnston was producing as well but saw no reason to stop his musical pursuits. Songwriter, vocalist, producer, session musician—if the surf and hot rod scene had a renaissance man, surely it was Bruce Johnston. By 1964, Johnston was already a proven veteran. Following up the success of The Rip Chords collaboration with Melcher and its hit single "Hey Little Cobra," Johnston revved up The Kustom Kings. With a mission statement "to present the most authentic hot rod album on the market," the Kustom City U.S.A. album brought together an all-star team. Bruce Johnston wrote and co-wrote much of the LP's material, as did producer/arranger/saxophonist Steve Douglas. Rounding out the band were guitarists Tommy Tedesco and Glen Campbell, Ray Pohlmann on bass, Jay Migliori on second sax and Hal Blaine on drums—WOW! For added authenticity, car designer George Barris, "THE KING OF THE KUSTOMIZERS," jumped on board as a special adviser. He, along with several of his rolling works of art, is pictured on the album's artwork. Looking at the full-color front cover slick, you can practically smell the burning rubber and fresh coats of paint! The too-cool visuals are just a bonus, however, because the REAL story is the music! A hi-octane mix of vocal tracks and charging instrumentals, there is not a second of filler to be found among the twelve tracks. Tedesco and Campbell lock in gripping guitar duels while Douglas and Migliori wail over the timing belt beat of Blaine and Pohlmann. Johnston contributes superb vocal and piano work and together, the Kustom Kings jam the accelerator down to floorboard! An album this magnificent should have ruled the charts, but things were moving quickly in 1964 and the public's attention soon turned elsewhere. Through the ensuing years, word of Kustom City U.S.A. and its brilliance spread through the collector scene, with copies of the LP changing hands for considerable sums. And now, just when you thought the tank was on E, Sundazed roars in with a maniacally marvelous reissue! Sourced from the original stereo masters, Kustom City, U.S.A. has been tuned up and restored to showroom condition.

Lana Sisters - Chantelly Lace The Lana Sisters made all girl commercial harmony pop singles for Fontana during the late 1950’s. Formed by Ris Chantelle, they were joined in 1958 by Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O Brien. Later the artist known as Dusty Springfield. They came closest to a hit with their version of Seven Little Girls, appeared on TV s Drumbeat , and produced 7 singles in all. The NME in 1960 reviewed their Someone Loves You Joe as a lively rocker that moves along at a fair old pace with guitars twanging all around. There s lots of echo and the girls put over the number with plenty of punch . This is a first time reissue for all of the singles and an early part of the Dusty Springfield story. The release falls into place in front of RPM s previous successful reissue of The Springfields (Retro D 820). As a bonus we have five singles by The Chantelles, the follow up Brit girl trio Ris Chantelle lead after Miss O Briens departure. Their media launch was in the film Dateline Diamonds alongside Kiki Dee. As with the film they had a strong connection with Radio London and London My Home Town was a regularly played and fondly remembered theme song which came out of a Radio London jingle. Other highlight s include the Northern Soul stomper There s Something About You, the Spectoresque I Want That Boy and Brit Girl classic Gonna Give Him Some Love.

Laurel Aitken - You Got Me Rockin' / The Blue Beat Years (1960 to 1964) Immediately after landing on British soil in the summer of 1960, Jamaican singing sensation Laurel Aitken was signed by leading independent record company, Melodisc, and over the next few years he provided the ambitious concern with a slew of popular proto-Ska singles that were instrumental in establishing its newly launched Blue Beat subsidiary as the UK’s most recognisable West Indian music imprint. The very best of these historic and hugely influential recordings are gathered on this compilation - most being made available on CD for the very first time - and with original copies of these highly collectable sides almost impossible to obtain at any price, ‘You Got Me Rockin’’ provides an opportunity to enjoy almost all of Laurel’s Melodisc output for a fraction of the price of an old scratched Blue Beat single. Quite simply, this is the most essential original Ska collection of 2010! (from Pressure Drop Records website)

Lavern Baker - Lavern Baker One of the greatest masterpieces of R&B + R&R !! 140 gram LP. Dolores Lavern Baker, responsible for a couple of dozen hits both on the R&B and Pop Charts of the late 50's, proved capable of melding blues, jazz and R&B styles in a way that made possible the emergence of a new idiom: rock and roll. She was also the first black artist to file a legal grievance against a white artist when she sued competing label Mercury recording artist Georgia Gibbs for covering one of her hits. Although she lost that battle, it set an important precedent! She was also one of the first R&B acts to bring rock and roll to the Ed Sullivan Show, opening the genre to a much wider audience. Lavern Baker is still considered one of the most remarkable female vocalists of her era, creating a sultry yet hard image that inspires female R&B singers to this day.

Lazy Lester - Rides Again - Expanded Edition I have been a huge fan of Lazy Lester’s brand of Louisiana swamp blues ever since that fateful day, many years ago now, when John Broven and Mike Leadbitter, of Blues Unlimited fame, introduced me to the Excello label and the production work of J.D. Miller, the label’s owner. I was hooked on Lester’s loping vocal and harmonica styling; the former owing a certain debt to one of the most influential bluesmen of that time, Jimmy Reed, while his harmonica work often appeared to emulate the phrasing and lilt of the accordion, an instrument much maligned, but which has been an all important part of Louisiana’s Cajun and Zydeco cultures. With the use of a pared-down rhythm section, utilising two guitars and assorted percussion to support his vocal and harmonica work, Lester created a sound that was truly unique – and almost irresistible. It had always been part of the master plan for the burgeoning Blue Horizon label – if indeed there had actually been a master plan – to record Lazy Lester, Lightnin’ Slim and Slim Harpo at some future date. It was not until 1987 that I finally succeeded in getting Lazy Lester into a recording studio. Many years of working in the studio in Crowley alongside J.D. Miller made Lester very singular of mind and perceptive as to what was required to get the best results. Those attributes stood him in good stead during these sessions. Musicians to be involved on the planned four-day sessions would be members of the Junkyard Angels, Blues’n’Trouble and special guests Bob Hall, Dave Bronze and John “Big Figure” Martin. The scene was set. I had requested that we should cut no more than three titles that Lester had recorded previously for Excello – and that’s exactly what we got. The others would be chosen from new song demos that had been especially written for the occasion, although only one of those actually made it to the studio and then was never completed – at least, not at that time. Lester had other material that he was anxious to commit to tape and we made the collective decision to also try and jam a couple of items and see what would happen. Now, you will have to take it from me that some US blues musicians can be tricky to work with. Not so with our man Leslie Johnson. He would prove to be open to almost any suggestion but also full of his own ideas – most of them pretty cool too. In an attempt to be as faithful to my good memories of those days back in May 1987, I got in touch with all the musicians that had participated to see if they might have had a different point of view. Everyone was of the same mind: Tim Elliott stating that his abiding memory was of “just how relaxed the sessions were and how everything just flowed – fabulous times”. On the 13 November 1988 “Rides Again” became the recipient of the W.C. Handy 1987-88 Blues Award For Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year (Foreign) presented by the Blues Foundation of Memphis. You could say, that although we might not have expected nor needed that, it was most welcome. By Mike Vernon (Ace Records)

Left Banke - Left Banke Too The Left Banke was one of the most distinctive pop bands of the ’60s, re-nowned for the unique “baroque rock” that allowed them to stand out during that heady musical era. While the band’s 1967 debut album, and its signature hits “Walk Away Renée” and “Pretty Ballerina” have long been acknowledged as classics, the band’s 1968 sophomore effort The Left Banke Too has maintained a persistent under-the-radar mystique, beloved by a loyal cadre of followers yet little-known by the general public. The Left Banke Too emerged from a turbulent period of the band’s brief but eventful history. Despite the success of their 1967 debut album Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina, the Left Banke’s lineup splintered soon after its release, with keyboardist and main songwriter Michael Brown exiting the group. His former bandmates Steve Martin, Tom Finn and George Cameron regrouped and rose to the occasion for The Left Banke Too, crafting a musically inventive, emotionally evocative set that’s every bit as magnificent as its predecessor. The trio’s exquisite vocal interplay and adventurous songwriting are prominent on such intoxicating tracks as “There’s Gonna Be a Storm,” “Goodbye Holly,” “Dark Is the Bark” and the Brown-penned “Desiree,” which is widely regarded as one of the group’s greatest studio achievements. Several of The Left Banke Too’s tracks also feature backing vocals by a young Steven Tyler, several years before he achieved stardom with Aerosmith.

Lesley Gore - Magic Colors - The Lost Album With Bonus Tracks 1967-1969 The superb lost sequel to the New Jersey pop icon’s “California Nights” album, with 15 extra tracks from the same period. Production and orchestrations by maestros Bob Crewe, Jack Nitzsche, Gamble & Huff, Steve Douglas, Herb Bernstein, Paul Leka, Thom Bell et al. New York City, 1981. An audience of New Wave hipsters (and me) has gathered for a screening of The TAMI Show, arguably (not really) the all-time greatest filmed rock concert. When Lesley Gore is introduced, snickers and catcalls resound. What’s this white-bread princess doing on a show with James Brown, Marvin Gaye and the Stones? Minutes later her powerful, intense performance of ‘You Don’t Own Me’ results in a standing ovation. Lesley Gore has always gotten a bum rap. After scoring a #1 on her first effort, the New Jersey teenager reeled off an impressive string of Quincy Jones-produced Brill Building hits while simultaneously pursuing her college education. After the hits subsided and Jones moved on, Lesley enjoyed a 1967 chart comeback with a couple of Bob Crewe productions that placed her squarely in the genre now fondly called Sunshine Pop. The comeback was short-lived, however, and Mercury Records shelved a planned album entitled “Magic Colors”. The world was deprived of a veritable Sunshine Pop masterpiece. Better late than never, Ace is proud to present “Magic Colors” in all its shimmering, swirling glory. The proposed LP was mostly produced by Steve Douglas, whose Wrecking Crew cohorts outdo themselves on the elaborately layered tracks. From the Neil Sedaka-penned title song to a vibrant cover of the Tokens’ Mann-Weil hit ‘It’s A Happening World’ and the inexplicably low-charting single ‘Brink Of Disaster’, the overall effect of “Magic Colors” is dazzling in its sophistication and complexity. Lesley and her brother Michael contribute a pair of songs and Teddy Randazzo’s beautiful ‘You Sent Me Silver Bells’ is a definite highlight, as is a cover of ‘To Sir With Love’ utilising the third verse that Lulu only sang in the movie. Lesley also nails the Rascals’ ‘How Can I Be Sure’ with understated sincerity. In the parlance of 1967, “Magic Colors” is one groovy album. 15 bonus tracks present a series of singles released in 1968 and 1969. The stars didn’t align to produce any hits despite valiant efforts by an array of crack tunesmiths and ace producers. Three tracks crafted by Gamble and Huff are pop/soul gems, and there’s a brilliant cover of Dusty’s ‘All Cried Out’ which went unreleased at the time. It’s hard to fathom why Lesley’s imaginative medley of ’98.6’ and ‘Lazy Day” wasn’t a hit, but easier to understand what went wrong with ‘Wedding Bell Blues’, which was pipped at the post by the 5th Dimension. Thus ended Lesley Gore’s Mercury tenure. The future would hold more great music, more songwriting (she and her brother shared a 1980 Best Song Oscar nomination) and a highly successful performing career that endures to this day, all on her own terms. New York City, 2011. A Broadway musical travesty about the Shirelles (but not even close) portrays Lesley for comic relief, simpering and snivelling through ‘It’s My Party’ before running offstage in tears. The bum rap continues. “Magic Colors” presents a much more realistic snapshot of the multi-faceted artist that is Lesley Gore. By Dennis Garvey (Ace Records)

Link Wray - White Lightning - Lost Cadence Sessions 1958 The kids of 1958 loved ’em, and their first single for Cadence Records shot up the charts like a label owner’s dream. This is the fantastic and fiery album that was supposed to have been released as a follow-up to one of the all-time great instrumental classics, the ultra-menacing “Rumble.” But faster than you can say “Drag Race,” everyone—Cadence label-owner Archie Bleyer included—was talking about this new threat to the morals of American youth. That’s why Link and his boys were off the imprint, and this album of prime distorto-guitar-crunch cool remained unreleased for nearly 50 years. Well here it is, and it’s every bit as dirty and dangerous as you would expect!
