| O.C. Tolbert - Black Diamond - Dave Hamilton's Detroit Masters It is odd to have lived with an artist’s work for many years, admiring their talents, gleaning little bits of information about them here and there, but failing to get a full picture of their career. Then suddenly things drop into place and the mists clear. That is how the process has been in seeing O.C. Tolbert’s solo compilation come to fruition over the last few months. Firstly, a 1-inch master tape was randomly copied and turned out to feature some great songs that we had not previously realised were Dave Hamilton’s work. Then the Damn Sam The Miracle Man Tayster LP and the Tolbert Rojac singles became better known and documented. Finally a trawl through some of Dave Hamilton’s half-inch tapes revealed more un-annotated recordings. But we were still missing the vital ingredient: a family member who could fill us in on O.C.’s career details from birth to his death in 1996. I had regularly tried the soul scene’s various web sites and information groups for details of O.C.’s life, but consistently came up with blanks. Then Eric LeBlanc – a music historian, good friend of Ace and something of a sleuth – provided me with five addresses of close relations, to whom I sent detailed letters requesting any information they could muster. Months passed and there was no word, so I decided to carry on regardless and do the best job I could on Dave Hamilton’s top male singer. Out of the blue an e-mail arrived from a Danish journalist resident in New York named Andreas Vingaard, who was researching Jack Taylor, the second of O.C.’s producers, and wondered what information we could provide him with for a forthcoming article. We got together, pooled our resources to quite an extent, and chased the family even harder. This paid off with only a couple of weeks to go to the deadline, when Andreas made contact with O.C.’s widow, Velma, and a telephone interview was arranged. Apart from filling out the early and later years of O.C.’s life, about which we knew very little, Velma was actually involved as a co-writer on several tracks that we were to feature. Though never a part of the recording sessions, she remembered the songwriting and sequence of musical events very well. She furnished us with photos that have further improved a very substantial booklet and put us right on several points; though it turned out that a lot of the speculation was near to the truth. Her granddaughter, Myesha, was involved in getting the music, photos and information between the two countries and the whole saga was an emotional journey for all concerned. For Velma, hearing tracks such as the original take of ‘Let Me Be Your Only Man’ and the tender ballad ‘I’ll Take It All’ was very bittersweet and rekindled all sorts of memories. For us soul fans it is a pleasure to have all his first major works on one compilation. Although the recordings stretch from 1968 to 1988, the power of O.C.’s tremendous voice makes the date of the recording low in relevance compared to the majesty of his singing. Tracks that have been dotted about on producer Dave Hamilton’s various artist compilations have had their audio revisited and further enhanced and putting them into one collection highlights their brilliance. ‘You Got Me Turned Around’ is shown to be a true powerhouse of a song, while ‘I’m Shooting High’ is mid-tempo Detroit soul at its very best. Gospel numbers such as ‘Rough Side Of The Mountain’ and ‘Somebody Is Here With Me’ fit in with the secular songs and his religious opus, ‘Give It To Glory’, is nothing short of sensational and ripe for more serious DJ attention; it is a new mix from the multi-track master that we feature this time around. Both sides of the excellent Rolyak 45 are heard in a new, brass-led, mix and we found a finished vocal version of ‘The Grown Folks Thing’, previously only known in an abbreviated form. ‘Fix It’ is a brand new slab of funk-edged soul and ‘Message To The Black Woman’ is as good a 70s dancer with a moral as you will hear. Though primarily a 70s artist in musical style, Dave Hamilton recorded him initially on some earlier backing tracks circa 1966 and his reading of ‘All I Want Is You’ is magnificent mid-tempo deep soul singing. The similarly constructed but contemporaneously recorded ‘That’s Enough’ and ‘That’s All She Wrote’ are equally worthy. Less than a third of the songs have actually been issued on Kent and most of those are in improved sound quality. This release will inevitably tease out a few more O.C. and Dave Hamilton facts from family and friends. Luckily we have found plenty more Dave Hamilton recordings to be able to update soul fans and music historians on future CDs. Until then revel in a truly unique and inspiring soul singer. | Original Golden Stars Of Greenwood, S.C. - Southern Carolina Gospel - Reverend Norris Turner This is a CD of black quartet gospel (13 songs) by the Original Golden Stars of Greenwood, S.C., and solo singing with a choral group (13 songs), by the exciting lead voice of Reverend Norris Turner. Here is more than 76 minutes of soulful, vibrating gospel singing from the black southern church, recorded between 1958 and 1979. The music was originally released on local South Carolina record labels like Pitch and HSE and was then exclusively distributed in the black community. It is now reissued, for the first time, for the benefit of gospel lovers all around the world. This has been possible after the producer's visit to South Carolina in 2005 and after almost five years of research, to which some of the leading authorities of the genre have helpfully contributed. |

Oscar & The Majestics - No Chance Baby ! For anyone with an overindulged appetite for '60s garage compilations, Oscar & the Majestics must seem like old friends. Certainly, that’s the way we feel about ‘em. In Sundazed’s exhaustive dig through the prized USA & Destination Records catalogs (2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage & Psychedelia from USA and Destination Records LP/CD), no other act—and that includes hit makers like the Buckinghams and Cryin’ Shames—came close to the coverage afforded Oscar Hamod & the Majestics. If the group had left more than five tracks in the USA vaults, no doubt we would have included more. Well, that was before Oscar opened up his vast personal archives, undisturbed for over 40 years, allowing for this first-ever collection of his complete ‘60s output. This includes the band’s best known USA sides, like the impossibly cool, fuzzed-out “Soul Finger”, as well as ultra-rare, Oscar-pressed singles (including the first official reissue of “House of the Rising Sun 1969”; an over the top rearrangement that suffers no shortage of Oscar-fuzz/Oscar-attitude. Most rewarding of all, this set unleashes the unreleased “Baby Under My Skin” and “I Feel Good”; both seriously Kinky krunchers from the USA era. As a bonus, we blow the lid off the untold history of Mr. Hamod & his rockin’ crew in a package also crammed with vintage photos and rare 45 label scans

Pat Boone - Pat Rocks (1-CD DigiPac with 48-page booklet, 34 tracks, playing time: 77:17) -- Second best-selling artist of the 1950s...Second only to Elvis! A unique collection of his rock 'n' roll songs! Includes rarities and obscurities! -- The latest volume in the Bear Family 'Rocks' series is a collection of surprisingly fine rock 'n' roll by Pat Boone. Much criticised and unfairly maligned by rock n roll 'authorities' over the years, Boone's rock 'n' roll catalogue was supremely popular in the U.S., the U.K., Germany and the rest of the world at the height of the rock 'n' roll era! In 1955 and '56, Boone visited the charts on both sides of the Atlantic regularly with a treasure trove of rockin' titles. His critics shout 'But they were nearly all cover versions!' Indeed they were, but they were very well sung, very well recorded, AND they were extremely successful! -- This new compilation features 34 recordings from the period 1955 through to 1962. Here are classic covers and revivals of Fats Domino's 'Ain't That A Shame', 'I'm In Love Again' and 'The Fat Man', Little Richard's 'Long Tall Sally' and 'Tutti Frutti', Big Joe's 'Honey Hush', Tennessee Ernie's 'Shotgun Boogie', and Red Foley's 'Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy'. -- Listen and enjoy once again the rockin' Pat Boone, the artist who was second only to Elvis Presley in the charts of the Fifties, the decade when rock 'n' roll ruled the world! -- The set is rounded off by a generously full booklet featuring period photographs and detailed in-person recollections from the man himself

Patrice Holloway - Love & Desire - The Patrice Holloway Anthology Patrice was beautiful, she was sassy. She was extraordinarily creative and way ahead of her generation. I loved her very, very much.” Motown producer Frank Wilson What an adventure it was to write the liner notes for “Love & Desire: The Patrice Holloway Anthology”! I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the life of this fascinating unsung artist through interviews with a host of her legendary colleagues: stellar session vocalists such as Clydie King and Edna Wright as well as Motown icon Brenda Holloway, Patrice’s sister. What emerged was a portrait of a singularly talented, spirited and fascinating young woman who was truly beloved by all who knew her. What didn’t emerge was the answer to an age-old riddle: Who sang backup behind Diana Ross on ‘Someday We’ll Be Together’? Brenda Holloway clearly hears her sister on the track, and Merry Clayton shared a vivid anecdote about rehearsing and recording it with Patrice. After the notes were sent to the printer, Motown stalwart Gloria Jones insisted that she had cut the vocals with Carolyn Willis and Patrice. Of course, the late producer Johnny Bristol claimed it was the Waters. File this one under Unsolved Mysteries. But here’s the biggest mystery: How did Patrice Holloway not become a superstar? “Love & Desire” showcases this brilliant vocal stylist on 25 rare tracks bursting with charisma and personality. Her complete output for Capitol is here: nine tracks released on five singles during two tenures with the label. ‘Stolen Hours’, ‘Ecstasy’ and ‘Love And Desire’ have long been Northern Soul favourites, and 1971’s ‘Evidence’ and ‘That’s The Chance You Gotta Take’ personify the “value for money” single. Another highlight is 1967’s ‘That’s All You Gotta Do’, written by future Motown luminary Willie Hutch. Did I say Motown? An excursion into the Hitsville vaults has yielded a treasure trove of exciting rarities. A few have sneaked out on compilations in recent years, such as Patrice’s original version of ‘The Touch Of Venus’, her duet with sister Brenda on ‘Come Into My Palace’ and her seldom-heard double-sided tribute to her teenage heartthrob, ‘Stevie’ and ‘The Boy Of My Dreams’. (Incidentally, Brenda spills the beans in the booklet notes on her little sister’s romance with young Mr Wonder.) Ten Motown tracks see light for the first time anywhere. There’s further flirtation with Stevie on a lively cover of his ‘Surf Stomp’, a Smokey-produced version of the Miracles’ ‘All That’s Good’ and an authoritative take on Mary Wells’ ‘My 2 Arms – You = Tears’. Barely in her teens when she committed these tracks to tape, Patrice is yearning and tender on ‘Love Walked Right In’ and boisterous on ‘Flippitty Flop’. Versatility abounds over a wide variety of styles including doo wop (‘Crying’), mid-60s pop (‘The Go Gang’) and testifying soul (the powerful ‘I Got To Change’). As I said, everyone who knew Patrice loved her. I, too, came to love her while working on “Love & Desire”. Now it’s your turn. By Dennis Garvey (Ace Records)

Paul Gayten - Ain't Nothin' Happenin' 30 track (77:51) multi label collection 1947-57. The unsung Crescent City bandleader Paul Gayten made the first New Orleans R&B recordings of the post war era and had the first local hit there in 1947. As a producer, he was responsible for grooming hit singers such as Annie Laurie, Larry Darnell, Chubby Newsome, Bobby Charles und Clarence 'Frogman' Henry and became an important individual in the Chess empire before forming his own label in the late 1960s. This thirty-track compilation traces the first half of his high-voltage career in the recording business and proves how necessary he was to the birth and development of New Orleans R&B and rock'n'roll.

Paul Heaton - Acid Country The warm, mellifluous voice of Paul Heaton often masks the jagged satirical content of his lyrics. From pointed political jabs like “The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death” to darkly comical love stories such as “Something That You Said,” Heaton′s work with the Housemartins and the Beautiful South has had countless listeners obliviously humming along to his biting wit. In the ′80s, Heaton was the leader of the Housemartins. Like the Smiths, the Housemartins were college radio all-stars in the U.S.; although the group′s jangly riffs and brainy, humorous songs couldn′t draw mainstream acceptance in America, the band shared a portion of the Smiths′ sizable cult of devotees. In 1986, the video for the Housemartins′ “Happy Hour” was selected as a Hip Clip of the Week on MTV; the rollicking single is still a favorite of′80s flashback shows on modern rock stations. After the Housemartins disbanded in the late ′80s, Heaton then fronted the Beautiful South, a group that mirrored the Housemartins′ no-frills approach. Nevertheless, the Beautiful South expanded Heaton′s musical canvas, exploring jazz and even country influences. While many critics and student-run radio stations in the U.S. continued to laud Heaton′s talent, the Beautiful South became far more successful in England, where they charted several number one albums. The group called it quits in 2007 and Heaton shifted his focus to his solo career. Although Paul′s first solo release was back in 2001 [albeit under the pseudonym Biscuit Boy], it wasn′t until 2008, with the release of The Cross Eyed Rambler, that Heaton started putting out records under his own name. Paul is currently finishing off his third solo album proper and training hard for his ambitious Pedals and Pumps tour, a cycling tour of 16 traditional English pubs in 20 days supporting the greenest form of transport whilst fighting the pub closures. This tour is now expected to cover over 900 miles. Summer will see the release of the new solo album and Paul appear at several of the country′s festivals.

| Paul Kelly - Hot Runnin' Soul Southern soul singer-songwriter Paul Kelly is a real hero of mine, and I’m sure that many Right Track readers and Kent customers feel the same way. He has been poorly served by the CD market, so it’s a real pleasure to make amends with this collection of his early solo 45s, a more than worthy representation of the first six years of his lengthy recording career. His catalogue has long cried out for reissue – particularly these early years, which have never been fully chronicled – and I’m very proud that the honour of bringing all this great music together fell to me. Paul recorded less frequently than many of his peers, but the upshot of that is that all of his solo recordings from 1965 to 1971 can fit onto one CD. The fact that most of his tracks were cut independently by one producer, the great Buddy Killen, and leased to a variety of imprints means that there were virtually no licensing difficulties to surmount – once we’d decided to do it, the project fell into place swiftly and easily. Our collection contains all of Paul’s singles for the Lloyd, Dial, Philips and Happy Tiger labels, exactly as they were issued – mostly mono, but in stereo when they were originally released that way. Most Kelly fans will tell you that Paul is never better than when he’s singing something slow, and cite tracks such as ‘If This Old House Could Talk’, ‘The Day After Forever’, the under-rated ‘Sailin’’ and the simply magnificent ‘Nine Out Of Ten Times’ as proof. While it’s hard to contest that, Paul was equally at home with up-tempo material, and you need look no further than the club classics ‘Chills And Fever’ and ‘Sweet Sweet Lovin’’ to confirm that: Paul’s career song, ‘Stealing In the Name Of The Lord’, is a dancer of sorts, while the brilliant ‘509’ demonstrates that the faster side of his repertoire is, at its best, more than a match for his slower numbers. With the exception of ‘Stealing’, none of these records were massive chart hits, although they deserved to be. They most likely failed to chart because they were competing with so many other great records, and there simply wasn’t room for every classic 45 to make a mark on the R&B charts back then. Happily for Paul, southern soul fans never put much stock in chart positions. Regardless of how many copies they sold on release, the best of the tracks on “Hot Runnin’ Soul” – and that’s almost all of them – will continued to be revered in soul circles for many years to come. | Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel - Two Teenagers - The Singles 1957-1961 There have been many collections of these pre Simon & Garfunkel releases but this is the first chronological compilation to feature all of their commercially released singles between 1957 and 1961. Includes tracks originally recorded as Tom & Jerry, Jerry Landis, Artie Garr and Tico & The Triumphs plus rare solo singles from both Art and Paul. The music on this disc is a far cry from the music that Simon and Garfunkel produced over the last forty years yet all of it captures the American pop music world in the years just before the pop British Invasion better than any greatest hits collection of the era ever could. Fully detailed liner notes with biography and career achievements. |

Peacocks - Don't Ask The first THE PEACOCKS show took place back in 1990. The band was Hasu on guitar, Adi on drums and Michi on double bass. The music was very rockabilly orientated poppy psychobilly with lots of cover songs. After playing a few birthday parties THE PEACOCKS broke up because Michi left the band, but one year later THE PEACOCKS restarted again as a three piece completed by Simon, Hasu's brother, who learned the double bass. This constellation lasted out for five years while they recorded three seven inches on their own, that have been sold out now for ages. Afterwards it was time for THE PEACOCKS to record their first regular album called "Come With Us" in 1995. Right before the first US/Canada tour, Adi decided to leave the band. The tour only could happen because the third Langhardt brother David knew all THE PEACOCKS songs so far, and jumped in as drummer. The tour was quite successful and a new drummer called Toni joined the band after they returned to Switzerland. Around 1997 THE PEACOCKS started to tour almost everywhere in the world, including Japan, the U.S., Canada and every European country. THE PEACOCKS recorded two more albums "In without knocking"(1998) and "Angel"(2001). Both records did alright and with "Angel", the band signed to Asian Man Records. Early in 2002 Toni had to leave the band because he couldn't tour anymore. With 3 kids he decided it's better to have a proper job. It took quite a long time for THE PEACOCKS to find a new drummer, but at the end of 2002 Jürg joined THE PEACOCKS and the band started again rockin'. In 2004 THE PEACOCKS released "It’s time for...The Peacocks" on five different record labels in five different countries and also three different continents. THE PEACOCKS toured again in almost every country in Europe, heading also successfully back to Canada and Japan. In 2006 Hairball 8 records did a best-of release for the U.S. market, followed by huge tour through 14 states. The band decided to stay in the US after the tour to record a new album at Sonic Iguana in Lafayette Indiana. Next important step in the bands history was the signing to “PEOPLE LIKE YOU RECORDS” in 2007, they released their label debut “Touch And Go” right away followed by a lot of touring through Europe in their old van. The “Touch And Go” sessions left a lot of material which was decided to put out as a ten inch called “The Best Of The Rest And The Left Overs” in 2008. Two years were needed, filled with a lot of amazing shows in the whole world, after THE PEACOCKS decided to head back in the studio to record a brand new record. After a couple of months “After All” was finished, it was released in March 2010 on PEOPLE LIKE YOU RECORDS. In September 2010 “After All” will hit the U.S. stores in cooperation again with PEOPLE LIKE YOU RECORDS THE PEACOCKS are now around for nearly 20 years. And they will stay forever. They’re cool and they look smart. But the most important thing is that they love what they do and are still hungry to play live! If you can’t believe this, convince yourself by visiting one of their amazing rockin’ live shows. Their genius mixture of punk, rockabilly and psychobilly garnished with cool beats and a pinch of pop, will keep you dancing all night long.

Pete Gage - Tough Talk A STUNNING NEW ALBUM BY PETE GAGE - "TOUGH TALK" IS OUT NOW! ALSO FEATURES LEGENDARY GYPIE MAY0 ON GUITAR! Pete Gage, who was born in Paddington London in February 1946, is a multitalented and charismatic artist. He has a stunning, deep and rich voice, and he's also a very capable piano and harmonica player. Here we have a real bluesman, whose interpretations are always full of feeling and are coming straight from the heart and guts. His music chorea started already in the mid 60's. Semi-legendary band called The Sloane Squares had already earned a cult status with their raging live shows, when ex-Shadows bass player Jet Harris hired them as his band. A single by Jet Harris, "My lady" was released in 1967, and features Pete Gage on vocals. Many will remember Pete from the 90's, when he was a frontman for Dr Feelgood for five years, and was taking care of vocal duties for example on their "On the road again" -album. A couple of solo-albums has been released too, "Give it with a feeling" in 1994, and piano-blues-album "Out of hours" in 1997. The latter was recorded in Finland, and released by finnish record company Goofin' Records, and got a very good reviews all over the world. Last couple of years Pete Gage has taken it easy in his native region in Frome England, but still all the time has toured with different line-ups, doing all kinds of gigs, from small clubs to a big blues-festivals. Mainly in England, but also in other countries like Spain and Finland. In Finland he has always had a large and loyal fan base, and is a very much loved and wanted performer especially in all kind of blues happenings and festivals. Recording wise things are also happening at the moment. Pete has recorded a brand new album "Tough Talk" (GRCD 6165) at Juha Takanen's famous Äänistudio in Finland. It has now been released by famous finnish rootsmusic label Goofin' Records. On the album Pete is taking care of all vocal duties, he also plays piano throughout the album, and adds some tasty harmonica on a couple of tracks. Most of songs are new ones written by artist himself. There's twelve original songs along with three covers, one of them being the old favorite "Standing at the crossroads" written by Mickey Jupp, which is given the all time rockin' treatment. The style is bluesy and very rootsy; blues, rhythm & blues and rock'n'roll are having an important role all through the record, and also some hints of cajun, country and jazz are there to spice up the whole thing. "Tough Talk" features a bunch of best players from the finnish roots scene. Also a legendary english guitarist Gypie Mayo (ex-Dr Feelgood, ex-Yardbirds) is playing on six tracks.

Peter Sellers And Sophia Loren - Peter And Sophia Peter Sellers' comic genius is undeniable. His work influenced everyone from the Beatles to Peter Cook to Monty Python. Amid such memorable Amid such memorable screen roles as his buffoonish Communist shop steward, Fred Kite in I’m All Right Jack, his perverted Clare Quilty in Lolita, his Tatiesque Hurundi V Bakshi in The Party, his famously hapless Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther, the three vivid characters he played in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr.Strangelove and the vacant Chauncey Gardiner in Being There, reside some of the greatest comic performances in cinema history. In 1960, Peter Sellers co-starred with Sophia Loren in The Millionairess. At the same time, Peter and Sophia teamed with George Martin (who would soon and throughout the sixties become the Beatles exclusive producer) to record a song inspired by the theme of the film entitled, Goodness Gracious Me. Goodness Gracious Me was released as a single and with the nation behind it, roared to the top of the charts. The album Peter and Sophia immediately followed it up the hit parade, as did the memorable follow up, Bangers and Mash. Our edition comprises, all of the Peter and Sophia recordings. A selection of Sellers songs also produced by George Martin and songs and music from such Sellers hits as I'm All Right Jack, Two Way Stretch, The Ladykillers and Sophia Loren’s It Started In Naples.
