Remo Four - Smile, Peter Gunn... And More (1-CD Digipak, four panel, with booklet. 17 tracks). -- One of the greatest Star-Club groups! Managed by Brian Epstein and later backed George Harrison on his 'Wonderwall Music' album ! Includes two top musicians of the UK Pop History, Tony Ashton and Colin Manley! British R&B par excellence. A sought after collectors' item! Rare bonus titles! -- Many Star-Club bands were audience favourites without becoming as big as the Beatles, who also started there. But there was one group that towered above their competitors for their outstanding musical quality, and it was another band from Liverpool, The Remo Four. In the early and mid-sixties the Remo Four became backing musicians for solo singers - and were among the best bands to ever touch the hallowed stage of the legendary Hamburg club. By 1967, they were among the best bands from England. - Charismatic singer/organ player Tony Ashton (1944-2001) and guitarist Colin Manley (1942-1999) were brilliant instrumentalists, and their solos were solidly backed by the band's rhythm section: ace drummer Roy Dyke and bass-player Phil Rogers. The Remo Four were the first among equals with an excellent fusion of rhythm, blues, brass-free soul and even gospel snippets - with Tony proving how such a mixture could be sung perfectly and soulfully alike. - Songs such as Sing Hallelujah, Brother Where Are You, the fantastic Jive Samba, to name but a few, are excellent examples of the quartet's outstanding groove. Their greatest success had come in 1966 with the Peter Gunn instrumental, which made them stars in Germany after a legendary live performance on the famous 'Beat-Club' TV show. - These days The Remo Four's only album 'Smile!' is insanely rare and expensive as an original, but even the CD edition - off the market for many years - has become a sought-after rarity. Now this outstanding slice of mid-Sixties music is available again with eight extra songs (A&B sides of two singles plus four tracks unreleased at the time). With this fabulous release, Bear Family finally fills in a missing link in the musical story of the 'Swinging Sixties'.

Robert Cray Band - Nothin' But Love With 5 Grammy Awards, 15 nominations, over 12 million of records sold worldwide, and thousands of sold out performances, rock blues icon Robert Cray is considered “one of the greatest guitarists of his generation.” Rolling Stone Magazine in their April 2011 issue credits Cray with reinventing the blues with his “distinct razor sharp guitar playing” that “introduced a new generation of mainstream rock fans to the language and form of the blues” with the release of his Strong Persuader album in 1986. Since then, Cray has gone on to record fifteen Billboard charting studio albums and has written or performed with everyone from Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan, from Bonnie Raitt to John Lee Hooker. Recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame at the age of 57, he is the youngest living legend to receive the prestigious honor. And while he can look back over an astonishing three-decade career punctuated by his trademark sound and distinct playing style, Robert Cray is too busy moving forward on an amazing journey that has him releasing his sixteenth studio album and embarking on yet another world tour. Nothin But Love will be both his first collaboration with the Provogue Records label and super-producer Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, The Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa). This ten-song stand includes material from all four Robert Cray Band members; Cray (vocals / guitar), Jim Pugh (keyboards), Richard Cousins (bass) and Tony Braunagel (drums) that blends blues, rock, soul and jazz with a lyric-sheet that examines the triumphs, fallouts and follies of love. “Kevin did an amazing job producing this album and I’m really happy with the outcome,” says Cray, “he captured the real essence of the Robert Cray Band, that live energy we deliver on the road that is usually so difficult to nail down in the studio. I think it’s one of the strongest records that we’ve done.” And he’s right. In terms of production, long-time fans will be thrilled with a recording featuring what Shirley calls “the dirt under the fingernails.” Recorded live over a two-week burst at the Revolver Studios in LA, Nothin But Love features the soaring breakup blues of “Won’t Be Coming Home”, the jazz chops of “I’ll Always Remember You”, the soul-drenched ode to repossession that is “Great Big Old House” to the frantic ’50s-flavoured rocker “Side Dish.” Cray still remembers the first love that led him here. “My dad was in the army, so we moved around quite a bit,” he explains. “I had a lot of time and the guitar became my friend. Also, when I first picked up a guitar, The Beatles were just out, and that’s why I got one. That’s why a lot of kids got guitars. The whole atmosphere of that time was, ‘Hey, I learnt this’. ‘Well, let me show you this…’ So that’s what sparked my interest, and it never really went away.” Cray cites Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy and B. B. King as formative guitar influences, alongside singers like Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, but just as pivotal for the aspiring bluesman was witnessing Albert Collins play a set at his high-school dance. It was that Collins performance that led to the formation of the Robert Cray Band in 1974, a four piece touring band featuring Cray on lead vocals and guitar and longtime friend Richard Cousins on bass, whose thrillingly modern take on the blues was the talk of the circuit, even if the singer was a bit of an introvert on stage. “I just couldn’t speak to the audience,” says Robert with a smile, “so Richard would do all the introductions. These days I think I’m better at it.” In 1976 after two years of touring and in the first of many pinch-yourself moments the band was invited to be the house band for Albert Collins; a stellar musical apprenticeship and schoolboy fantasy that lasted over 18 months. Opening their account with 1980’s Who’s Been Talkin’, the Robert Cray Band fired off three albums in quick succession, and although 1985’s False Accusations hijacked the charts and won an industry blues award, it was the following year’s Strong Persuader that achieved lift-off, hitting a US#13 chart position that was unprecedented for a blues record in the synthesizer age. “I guess Strong Persuader just captured a good spirit and energy,” Cray reflects. “People are still calling out for some of those songs at shows. It gave us a good springboard. I guess it was the songs, but it was also the era, because radio and MTV gave us a foothold, and we had videos out too.” Cray had arrived in the big league. As singles like “Smoking Gun” scaled the singles charts across the planet and word spread of his incendiary live shows, his name began to be mentioned in the same breath as the blues heavyweights, and he was regularly to be found working alongside them. He spent the years that followed guesting on Eric Clapton’s Journeyman album, jamming live with Keith Richards, appearing in Tina Turner’s TV special Break Every Rule, posthumously inducting Howlin’ Wolf into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, and supplying solos for the late John Lee Hooker. “We became good friends,” says Cray of this latter hero. “We were with the same agency, so we did a lot of shows together. I went to Japan with John Lee and watched as the Japanese fans mobbed him. It was fantastic. He was a real one-off.” The oft-quoted line reads ‘bluesmen improve with age’, and Cray’s evolving output through the next two decades gives weight to the theory. “In the ’90s, we had the I Was Warned album (1992), and then Sweet Potato Pie (1997), which was a Memphis kind of thing that got into the soul bag,” he recalls. “I really liked those two records: there was some good songwriting.” In 2000 he took home a Grammy for the album Take Your Shoes Off and went on to release two additional Grammy nominated albums Twenty (2005) featuring the poignant anti-Iraq war song of the same name, and This Time (2009) featuring the soul drenched favorite “I Can’t Fail.” The following year, the Robert Cray Band release the live album Cookin’ In Mobile (2010) and once again toured worldwide to sellout crowds. “We have been very lucky,” says Cray, “with music becoming mostly digital in recent years and artists not selling the same number of physical records, we’re afforded the luxury of having a great loyal and amazing fan base around the world, allowing a band like ours to continue to work.” It’s quite a humble and unassuming statement, given his illustrious career – but that’s always been Cray’s style. He doesn’t take anything for granted, doesn’t rest on his laurels. So on this sixteenth studio release, Robert Cray is once again laying down his cards, testing his talent, fusing that dazzling voice to some of the most powerful material in his three-decade back catalogue and offering his fans Nothin But Love. Nothin’ But Love is not the kind of album you have a casual fling with. It’s the kind of album you fall for.

Rock Ola - Beautiful Rough – Best Of Olan uusi kokoelma CD missä mukana myös muutama julkaisematon biisi. Onnea Rock-Ola 50v !! Holidayn vaikutus tuo Olan tulkintoihin sellaista herkkyyttä, jota harvemmin rock'n'rollin laulajilla kuullaan. Soittajanuransa Ola aloitti rumpalina, mikä kuuluu edelleen hänen laulunsa oivaltavassa rytmityksessä. Maanlaajuiseen maineeseen Ola sai kosketusta suosikkiyhtye Johnny And The New Dodgersissa, mutta kun Suomen suosituimman rockabilly-yhtyeen Teddy And The Tigersin johtaja Teddy Guitar pyysi häntä rumpaliksi uuteen Lonestars-ryhmäänsä, alkoi Ola saada ansaitsemaansa huomiota myös solistina. Vasta vuonna '96 - viitisentoista vuotta levyn äänitysten jälkeen Jungle Records julkaisi kappaleet CD:llä Slap That Bass. Vaikka Rock-Ola tunnettiin mestarillisena laulajana ja uskolliset ihailijat pysyivät yleisössä, jäi levytysten määrä yllättävän vähäiseksi. Vähäiselle määrälle toi toki positiivista vastapainoa niiden korkea laatu. Seitsemäntuumaisia vinyylilevyjä ilmestyi eri yhtiöiden kautta parin vuoden välein ja Ola jatkoi yhteistyötä mm. Bippin' Pete Trion, Lost Soulsin ja Butterfingersin kanssa. Vuonna -90 Rock-Ola teki uuden aluevaltauksen liittyessään instrumentaaliyhtyeenä tunnetun The Charadesin laulusolistiksi. Perinteisestä rock'n'rollista siirryttiin reippaasti melodisempaan rockiin, mikä jäi pysyvästi kuulumaan Olan tulkinnoissa jatkossakin. Sooloura sai uutta puhtia lopulta vuonna -96, kun Bluelight Records julkaisi albumin Yesterday Is Gone. Se toi esiin Rock-Olan entistäkin monipuolisempana tulkitsijana, mutta valitettavasti levyllä soittanut kokoonpano jäi jälleen lyhytikäiseksi. Kun Ola sai vihdoinkin kasaan uuden yhtyeensä Rock-Ola And The Freewheelers, nousi se oitis suomalaisen rock'n'rollin kärkikaartiin. Komeasti sujui bänditoiminta jatkossakin, sillä vuonna 2004 julkaistu konserttitaltiointi Live On The Rocks oli vahva näyttö ryhmän keikkakunnosta. - Honey Aaltonen

Roky Erickson with Okkervil River - True Love Cast Out All Evil Chemikal Underground offers the inestimable Mr Roky Erickson a fond, Glaswegian embrace: thrilled to be working with a bona fide living legend, we're honoured to have The 13th Floor Elevators' frontman allow us to release his first album in 15 years. That the album 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' also features Okkervil River on production and backing duties just makes the whole enterprise all the sweeter... Roky Erickson's life and career is the stuff of darkly fantastic fiction: while his early teenage success with The 13th Floor Elevators pioneered psychedelic garage rock and ensured him a place at the table with rock's most influential artists, the thirty years that followed were a grotesque cavalcade of bankruptcy, drug addiction, mental illness, electro-shock therapy, deteriorating health and social withdrawal. That Roky has endured these hardships is a thing of wonder; that he has managed to not only endure but triumph, re-marrying his wife of 35 years (who now shares their home in South Austin), forging a relationship with his previously estranged son (who was instrumental in Roky's recovery) and ultimately returning to the studio to make music again is nothing short of miraculous. The roll call of bands influenced by Roky's music is simply too long to list here: from REM to Spacemen 3, The Jesus And Mary Chain to Julian Cope, ZZ Top to Primal Scream - all of them and more owe a debt to the scuzzed-up garage rock of Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators. All the more exciting then, to have him return to the studio, this time with Will Sheff from Okkervil River producing and his band provide an impeccably sensitive backdrop for Roky's heart-rending vocals. The result, 'True Love Cast Out All Evil', is a profoundly moving and honest potrayal of a life, once blighted by addiction, incarceration and mental illness, but now rediscovered through the patient help and support of family and friends. Not ones to be overly sycophantic with such things we at Chemikal have to come right out and say that the themes of loss and redemption on this album, Roky's vocal performances and the jaw-dropping back-story to its creation make 'True Love Cast Out All Evil' one of our most significant releases and we couldn't be more proud to be involved.

Ronnie And His Twanging Little Fellow - Ronnie And His Twanging Little Fellow Ronnien räväkän instrurockin keitos muodostuu, kun Sonicsien, Dick Dalen ja Link Wrayn sekaan paistetaan hieman Huevos Rancherosta. Yhdessä päivässä idyllisessä miljöössä äänitetty levy on läpileikkaus nelikon musiikilliseen sielunmaisemaan vuosien ajalta. These recordings are previously unpublished and are being released for the first time anywhere. -- This is Ronnie Dawson at his absolute rockin' best! His stellar backing band includes, High Noon's Shaun Young, Sean Mencher and Kevin Smith along with Lisa Pankratz. These are the same great Texas musicians who appeared with Ronnie on national television for a live performance on 'The Conan O'Brien Show' in 1995. Ronnie began his career as a teen sensation in late 1950s Dallas, Texas. Known as the 'Blonde Bomber', he had some success with early Rockabilly favorites like 'Action Packed' and 'Rockin' Bones'. Thanks to those early recordings, a renewed interest in Ronnie developed in England and Europe in the late 1980s. Thus began the most prolific years of his life. Ronnie Dawson was fresh, relevant and exciting, not an 'oldies' performer resting on his laurels. All throughout the 1990s and up to his untimely demise at age 64 in 2003, Ronnie continued to amaze with exciting new material and unforgettable performances. The recordings released here for the first time, capture what could surely be called the epitome of Ronnie Dawson during the most thriving and creative years of his life.

Ronnie Hawkins And The Hawks - Forty Days Known variously as “Rompin’ Ronnie”, “Mr Dynamo”, “The Hawk” or “The Camel-Walker”, Ronnie Hawkins is one of the truly legendary figures of Rockabilly and R’n’R. Although his crossover commercial successes have been relatively few and far between, his influence - notably on the Canadian Rock scene (he has lived in Canada for more than fifty years) - is immeasurable, the most renowned line-up of his ever-changing backing group, The Hawks, famously going on to world acclaim as The Band. This compilation features Ronnie’s first two Roulette LPs, 'Ronnie Hawkins' (1958) and 'Mr Dynamo' (1960) in their entirety (NB: these are widely acknowledged as his finest recordings), plus a quartet of genuine collectors’ rarities in the shape of two contemporaneous non-album singles. Ronnie’s two early US Top 50 hits ‘Forty Days’ and ‘Mary Lou’ are included herein; both were far bigger hits in Canada, where they made the Top 10, as did ‘Southern Love’, whilst ‘The Ballad Of Caryl Chessman’ (perhaps the first example of a R’n’R singer tackling a controversial political and social issue) made the Canadian Top 50. Like all 50s Rock’n’Rollers, Ronnie retains a massive fanbase and near-legendary status in the UK and Europe. For many years these two LPs were unavailable, and back in the vinyl era were the subject of some fairly heavy bootlegging. It is our very great privilege to be able to include them in this series.

Ronski Gang - The Elevens Legendaarinen The Ronski Gang julkaisee odotetun uutuusalbumin "The Elevens" 19.10. Esimakua tulevalta pitkäsoitolta julkaistiin kesän kynnyksellä "All night long"-singlen muodossa. Nyt takaisin kehään palannut bändi on kaikessa hiljaisuudessa äänittänyt kokonaisen albumillisen energisiä rock-biisejä. Edeltävästä virallisesta studioalbumista on ehtinyt vierähtää jo lähes kolmekymmentä vuotta, kun 2005 julkaistiin tuplakokoelma vanhoista hiteistä. Uusi levy "The Elevens" sisältää nostalgiannälkäisille alkuperäisille faneille takuuvarmasti mieluista materiaalia, perinteiseen Ronski Gang-tyyliin. "Lähes kaikki albumin biisit on bändin omaa tuotantoa. Kolme ensimmäistä levyä julkaistiin kyseisen bändin nimellä, kunnes lopulta nimeksi vakiintui The Ronski Gang. 70-luvun lopulla ja 80-luvun ensimmäisinä vuosina Ronskin ryhmä oli yksi Suomen suosituimmista live-kokoonpanoista, yleisöennätyksiä rikottiin ympäri Suomea. Vuonna 1984 bändi jäi tauolle, mutta teki paluun keikka-areenoille 90-luvulle tultaessa. 2000-luvun alusta lähtien bändi on keikkaillut harvakseen tehden muutamia keikkoja vuosittain.

Roomates - Dawning It was around the end of 1986, when the new wave rockabilly scene had passed its peak, that four friends and I, who had all been on the scene in one way or another since the late 70s, decided to start a doo wop group. It wasn’t until we were choosing which songs to attempt that we realised we all had a love of groups such as the Passions, Elegants, Mystics, Imaginations, Jay & the Americans and, last but not least, Dion & the Belmonts. After a few name and personnel changes we find ourselves 25 years and 11 CDs later. “Dawning” includes many of the songs we used to rehearse a cappella down any subway we could find back in those early days, plus some especially written new ones. Some of the songs will be well-known to doo wop collectors. There are also some obscure titles and a couple not associated with vocal groups, including Andy Williams’ ‘Music To Watch Girls By’, my own personal choice. Some of our most complex harmonies to date can be heard on our version of the Beach Boys’ classic ‘In My Room’. As on all Roomates CDs, we have recorded some Dion tracks, both with and without the Belmonts. Some of the numbers we found by accident on cassette tapes Nick used to make for us to take home after our early rehearsal sessions. Many songs we have recorded throughout our 25 years, including some of those here, were suggested to us by our fans around the world. It seems a long time ago since those early days when we would get together for fun at Nick’s with never any intention of singing on stage, travelling to different countries, meeting fans of our music and even getting to know some of the original members of the groups who have inspired the Roomates sound, which culminated with us getting to sing with our long-time hero Dion DiMucci back in November 2007. It’s been nearly five years since the last full Roomates CD. We think “Dawning” is probably our best to date and I’m sure our fans will also. By Steve Webb (Ace Records)

Rory Storm And The Hurricanes - LIve At The Jive Hive March 1960 "Although the history of Merseybeat & the growth of the Beatles have been examined in forensic detail there are still discoveries to be made & sometimes something special comes along that is both unexpected and exciting. How come over 50 years on we now have a full set from Rory Storm & The Hurricanes in 1960? They are on great form and whats more the set has been professionally recorded". "As someone who has followed every niche of Merseybeat I have never come across anything like this & I am delighted to be telling you about it. Although up to 125 Liverpool beat groups were performing at any one time over the city and it's suburbs precious few live recordings were made & this is the first time that a full set from a Merseyside group recorded before 1963 has been released.

Rosie Flores & The Pine Valley Cosmonauts - Girl Of The Century With over half a century of hard roots-rabbling between them, Rosie Flores—the Rockabilly Filly, and Jon Langford—head Mekon, Waco Brother and conductor of the Chicago-based collective the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, blast a sonic contrail stretching from Texas to Wales, from the dusty hill country to the dusky fetter cairns. These two long-celebrated musical forces, one with her cowboy boots firmly in the dance halls and the other with his work boots sloshing around puddles of beer in the pubs, come together for Girl of the Century, an album of spirited and soulful romps through the back roads of American music. Recorded live-in-the-studio hot with the Cosmos tackling their task at the knees, Girl of the Century crackles with effusive energy. Anchored by the crack rhythm section of Tom Ray (Neko Case, Devil in a Woodpile) on bass and Joe Camarillo (Waco Brothers, Dollar Store) on drums, the Cosmos find a groove and lock it in, be it the suave blues of “Chauffeur,” the Bob Wills smooth swing of “Little Bells” or the wild rockabilly of “This Little Girls Gone Rockin’.” Throughout, Pat Brennan’s stone-cold honky-tonk piano and John Rice’s count-in fiddle keep the boots firmly on the rail. Rosie’s front and center vocals have never sounded better. From her saucy growls to kittenish sass to clarion Ronnie Spector smarts, there’s a versatility here she’s only hinted at on previous albums. Smooth, cheek to cheek balladry like “Last Song” and “Dark Enough,” a torch number so swampy it’s easy to imagine her draped over a mossy piano, sashay against a more playful and powerful side when she gets her pop rocks off Maggie May-ish blue-eyed soul style on the Langford penned “Halfway Home” or the Little Sisterera Elvis rocker “This Cat’s in the Doghouse” co-written by Patricia Vonne. For a little slice of heaven from the Conway and Loretta playbook, look no further than the old school duet with Langford “Whose Gonna Take Your Garbage Out?” It’s all Texas twang and blustery, rolling rrrr’s. Given that this is a Rosie Flores album, though, one expects guitar heroics. With Langford’s chunky punk roots, John Rice’s clean lines and Rosie’s off the charts vivacity and dexterity, Girl of the Century delivers with a handful of spades. There’s revved up runs straight outta Sun Records on “This Little Girls Gone Rockin’,” the exaggerated wah wah on” I Ain’t Got You,” and urgent straight up rock and roll in “You’re the One.” Check out the jolt she provides on the oft-covered Johnny Cash’s “Get Rhythm.” This album is a gas, friends. We're ever so happy to bring these two super cool artists together.
