Del Shannon - The Complete UK Singles (and more) 1961-1966 2CD
Del Shannon’s formidable hit list qualifies him as one of the truly great artists of the 1960s. Del made #1 on both sides of the Atlantic with his first 45, ‘Runaway’, and for the next few years he delivered the chart goods again and again with some of the best singles ever made – most of which he wrote or co-wrote.

This new Ace set is, we believe, the first to present Del’s UK 45s, as released between 1960 and 1966, in the order they appeared here and in the same couplings used on the original London and Stateside pressings (which often differed from their US counterparts). Listening to them in sequence, it’s easy to build a mental picture of an artist who was always looking to stretch his creativity and to find new sounds to keep him in the charts long after many of his peers had waved goodbye to the Hot 100.

It would be easy to say that Del never released a better record than ‘Runaway’, but that’s not to disparage other early classics such as ‘Hats Off To Larry’ and ‘So Long Baby’, which would be high-water marks of any discography, or later gems such as ‘Keep Searchin’ (We’ll Follow The Sun)’ and the ferocious ‘Move It On Over’, as good a record as anything to come out of Detroit’s garage scene at the time. Whether these are your favourites or you prefer the more soulful slant of ‘Little Town Flirt’ and ‘Two Kinds Of Teardrops’ or well-remembered flipsides such as ‘Kelly’ and ‘Don’t Gild The Lily, Lily’, there were no bad Del Shannon singles; having them all in one collection merely reinforces that statement.

As well as the UK singles we’ve included Del’s original version of ‘His Latest Flame’ and his cover of ‘From Me To You’, recorded while the Beatles where still in the UK Top 40 with it – both of which came out on UK EPs. To make sure that every UK single is represented accurately, we’ve also added Del’s pal Max Crook’s ‘The Snake’, which was mispressed as ‘Jody’ on the flip of early copies of ‘Runaway’. The EP covers and the labels of each and every A and B-side are featured in the booklet, along with songsheets, period ads and photos taken during Del’s many UK tours.

Eino Grön - Samettisilmäinen Tyttöni - levytyksiä 1958-1961

SALIX julkaisee nyt EINO GRÖNIN CD – levyn, jonka ensimmäinen kappale on juuri mainittu ”Venäläinen tango”. Se on kansansävel ja sovittajana toimi TOIVO KÄRKI ja sanoitus tietenkin REINO HELISMAAN. Francoise Hardy - Midnight Blues - Paris London 1968-1972
The events of May 1968 across France signalled the end of the yé-yé era and a new seriousness in French pop. Unlike perky domestic stars such as Sheila or France Gall, Françoise Hardy had always had a moody image – in reality she was chronically shy. A keen astrologer, this is something she has always been quick to blame on her star sign, Capricorn: “You have the longest nights, the longest absence. When the sun is in Capricorn, you are not there. You are below the horizon. You are invisible.” 1968 was also the year she retired from public performance after a rare tour of Britain.

Françoise had set up her own independent Asparagus Productions in late 1967. Initially, her old label Vogue continued to distribute her records, but in 1969 Françoise signed a deal with the small Sonopresse imprint, where she would stay until 1972. For many of her fans this is the most intriguing and exciting part of her career.

From the beginning of her career and into the early 70s, Françoise recorded quite extensively in English, German, Italian and Spanish, but that material is not easy to find these days. This collection, recorded variously in Paris and London between 1968 and 1972, comprises tracks drawn from her albums “En Anglais”, “One-Nine-Seven-Zero” and “Françoise Hardy” (aka “If You Listen”) and offers a very welcome opportunity to hear her perform in English.

1965’s ‘All Over The World’ had given Françoise her only UK Top 20 hit. Although she couldn’t follow it up in Britain, France remained loyal and she was still a huge star there when she made her first full, specially recorded English language album “En Anglais” in 1968.

“One-Nine-Seven-Zero” – released worldwide in 1969, but never in France– was recorded at several different sessions in London and Paris, and with a number of disparate collaborators. Though its variety of studios and arrangers could have made it a patchwork, the album is held together by a clutch of songs written and produced by Tommy Brown and Micky Jones. The opening trio – ‘Song Of Winter’, ‘Magic Horse’, ‘Strange Shadows’ – are especially strong, with warm, full arrangements by Jean-Pierre Sabar.

Jones and Brown also contributed ‘Bown Bown Bown’ to 1972’s “Françoise Hardy”, recorded at Sound Techniques in Chelsea with folk rock producer Tony Cox. Sound Techniques was a bit like a social club for folk musos from Joe Boyd’s Witchseason stable. The Trees album had been recorded there, as had albums by Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. The latter’s Gerry Conway and Pat Donaldson played on the sessions for Françoise’s album, along with Richard Thompson and Fairport drummer Dave Mattacks.

There are precious few enough albums from this golden period of folk rock as it is; this release gives long overdue exposure to a unique coming together of the British folk underground and a French musical legend.

George Jackson - The Fame Sessions
Ah, the joy of vinyl – especially the new Ace Records high quality releases. The 180 gram test pressing landed on my desk with a thump and, once placed on the deck, the needle was placed on the first groove with a satisfying thrum. So you can only imagine how much better the experience got as the sound of Fame’s classic house band of David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett and Roger Hawkins emerged from the speakers. They were behind George Jackson as he demonstrated the power of a new song he had written. Any fan of Southern Soul will know that ‘I’m Just A Prisoner’ became a classic for Candi Staton but, as we have proved time and again over the last few years, George Jackson was more than capable of delivering his own songs.

Mississippi-born, George had his first break in music working alongside Dan Greer at Goldwax Records in Memphis, writing songs and releasing a single in a duet with Dan. In 1967 he auditioned at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, where proprietor Rick Hall was looking to replace his top writer Dan Penn, who had moved to Memphis the previous year. In George, Rick found someone who not only wrote prolifically but could sing as well. As an artist, George released two singles on the Fame label and one more Fame-recorded side on Verve. However, it is quite likely that no-one wanted him to be too successful in that role, because his songs were far too important for Fame’s star artists and others who passed through the studio looking for some Muscle Shoals magic. In short order, he wrote hits for Candi Staton, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter and then turned out a #1 for the Osmonds.

However, George wrote more songs than he could place with other artists and he also recorded non-stop. Over two CD volumes we have showcased his Fame recordings and we are now proud to present you with his first ever vinyl album from these sessions. In the style of a classic late 60s or early 70s soul album, it features 12 stunning tracks, two of which are (for now) exclusive to this release. It’s difficult to pick out favourites but I have a lot of time for ‘I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew’ (which we’ve discovered was written with James Govan in mind) and ‘Get It When I Want It’, another track written for Candi Staton. Of the new tracks, ‘Add A Little Sunshine’ and ‘That From The Heart’ are more than worthy additions to the George Jackson canon.

George Jones - The Complete United Artists Solo Singles
32 A&B sides of Hardcore 60s Honky Tonk.

“Country music is like a religion to me!” George Jones once told liner notes author Holly George-Warren, and listening to this collection of the great singer’s United Artists singles from 1962-1966 will make a believer out of you. The diversity of material is astounding. You hear Jones master all the flavors of vintage country: lovelorn ballads, inspirational gospel, uptempo honky-tonk, humorous novelty numbers, old-timey murder ballads—even holiday and Western songs.

United Artists was the third home for George Jones’ output since his 1954 debut on the Starday label in his native Texas. His manager and producer Harold “Pappy” Daily signed him to United Artists (UA) following a stint at Mercury, where he scored his first #1 hit, “White Lightning,” in 1959, followed by 1961’s “Tender Years.” Most of the UA recordings transpired in Nashville, with Jones backed by Music City’s A-team: guitarist Grady Martin, bassist Bob Moore, drummer Buddy Harman, pianist Pig Robbins, and Hal Rugg on steel guitar, Tommy Jackson on fiddle, and Kelso Herston on electric 6-string bass. The Jordanaires provided the background choruses, part of the Nashville Sound that Jones adopted for his hardcore country.

Right out of the box at UA, Jones hit the jackpot again with his third chart-topper, “She Thinks I Still Care” backed with the gorgeous ballad, “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win,” also a hit. Both sides of the plaintive single pointed the way to the kind of material that in Jones’ hands would become his signature style, leading to such landmark recordings as 1980’s “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”

“She Thinks I Still Care” almost didn’t get cut, however. It was penned by Dickey Lee, the Texas songwriter whose “Patches” would be a smash for Clarence Carter in 1970. Songwriter and producer Jack Clement, who’d left Memphis’ Sun Records behind to operate Gulf Coast Recording Studio in Beaumont, Texas, pitched it to Jones. But it wasn’t an easy sale for Clement, whose publishing company handled the song. George told him, “I don’t think I like it too much. It’s got too damn many ‘just becauses’ in it. Clement tweaked it, making it a bit more country, according to Bob Allen, who recounts the story in his 1984 Jones biography. “After [Clement] agreed to relinquish half the publishing royalties to George and the hard-bargaining Pappy Daily, George finally relented and recorded it,” writes Allen. Soon after its release, “She Thinks I Still Care” lodged at the top of Billboard’s C&W chart for six weeks. By year’s end, the smash had been chosen 1962’s “Favorite Country Music Single” by the nation’s DJs in Billboard’s annual poll.

Johnny Copeland - It's Me - Classic Texas Soul 1965-72 2CD
At the time of his death 15 years ago, Johnny Copeland was regarded as one of the world’s premier blues artists, a Grammy-winner with a strong body of work behind him. Success had come late, preceded by almost 30 years of working hard to make a living. In those years he recorded extensively, building a catalogue of 45s that did little to advance his career, despite their unbridled excellence. Many of those 45s fell into the hands of appreciative soul and blues collectors around the world, establishing Johnny as a cult hero whose work was always worth a listen.

Johnny had been working for a decade when he entered into a professional relationship with producer Huey Meaux in 1964, but it wasn’t until he came under Huey’s wing that his records found their way beyond Texas and onto bigger labels. Huey recognised Johnny’s talent and recorded him extensively. The records they made together form the basis of this important new 2CD set.

“It’s Me” is the most comprehensive collection of Johnny’s mid-60s to early 70s recordings ever assembled. Here you’ll find Huey Meaux-produced Wand, Suave, Jet Stream, Boogaloo and Wet Soul singles, material Johnny either sold to or cut directly for Kent-Modern in the early 1970s, two rare duets he recorded with South Texas R&B heroine Miss La Vell White as Johnny & Lilly, sides submitted to Wand for a proposed album that never happened, previously undocumented songs, and some fabulous vocal/guitar demos, some of which have never been issued before. None have ever sounded better than they do here, thanks to extensive vault research undertaken by me and my colleague Alec Palao in 2012. (Due to the disappearance or deterioration of a few tapes, fresh dubs were made and remastered from scratch.)

I first heard Johnny Copeland when my old pal Tony Cummings sat me down and played me ‘Dedicated To The Greatest’ almost 45 years ago. The power and soul in his voice made me an immediate fan. It’s been a true honour to work on a project that at last puts this classic material into the context it’s always deserved.

Johnny Rivers - This Could Be The One
Although it wasn't until 1964 when Johnny Rivers finally became a star with his hit 'Memphis' he had a career going back to 1958.

Here we have the earliest recordings of the 60s superstar getting their most comprehensive reissue yet!

Kustom Kings - Kustom City U.S.A.
Prior to becoming a full-time Beach Boy and well before he wrote the song that made the whole world sing, Bruce Johnston was a key member of the West Coast music scene. In 1959, while still in high school, Johnston played piano on friend Sandy Nelson's hit single, "Teenbeat." This opportunity kicked off an incredibly prolific period for the young musician. Johnston recorded under his own name as well as many group names, playing with the cream of the California session personnel, The Wrecking Crew. He also made records with his friend Terry Melcher until Melcher moved on to pursue record producing full time. Johnston was producing as well but saw no reason to stop his musical pursuits. Songwriter, vocalist, producer, session musician—if the surf and hot rod scene had a renaissance man, surely it was Bruce Johnston.

By 1964, Johnston was already a proven veteran. Following up the success of The Rip Chords collaboration with Melcher and its hit single "Hey Little Cobra," Johnston revved up The Kustom Kings. With a mission statement "to present the most authentic hot rod album on the market," the Kustom City U.S.A. album brought together an all-star team. Bruce Johnston wrote and co-wrote much of the LP's material, as did producer/arranger/saxophonist Steve Douglas. Rounding out the band were guitarists Tommy Tedesco and Glen Campbell, Ray Pohlmann on bass, Jay Migliori on second sax and Hal Blaine on drums—WOW! For added authenticity, car designer George Barris, "THE KING OF THE KUSTOMIZERS," jumped on board as a special adviser. He, along with several of his rolling works of art, is pictured on the album's artwork. Looking at the full-color front cover slick, you can practically smell the burning rubber and fresh coats of paint!

The too-cool visuals are just a bonus, however, because the REAL story is the music! A hi-octane mix of vocal tracks and charging instrumentals, there is not a second of filler to be found among the twelve tracks. Tedesco and Campbell lock in gripping guitar duels while Douglas and Migliori wail over the timing belt beat of Blaine and Pohlmann. Johnston contributes superb vocal and piano work and together, the Kustom Kings jam the accelerator down to floorboard! An album this magnificent should have ruled the charts, but things were moving quickly in 1964 and the public's attention soon turned elsewhere. Through the ensuing years, word of Kustom City U.S.A. and its brilliance spread through the collector scene, with copies of the LP changing hands for considerable sums. And now, just when you thought the tank was on E, Sundazed roars in with a maniacally marvelous reissue! Sourced from the original stereo masters, Kustom City, U.S.A. has been tuned up and restored to showroom condition.

From “Swinging Doors” in 1965 until the end of the decade, Haggard had an incredible string of hit records. “The Fugitive” (b/w “Someone Told My Story”) was his first #1 single, and was a composition by Liz Anderson, Lynn Anderson’s mother. “I Threw Away The Rose” b/w “Loneliness Is Eating Me Alive” went to #2 on the charts in late 1966. “Branded Man” went to #1, and was backed by a remake of an earlier Tally number (co-written by Joe “Red” Simpson), “You Don’t Have Very Far To Go.” “Sing Me Back Home” b/w “Good Times” was another #1 smash, in the fall of 1967. “The Legend Of Bonnie And Clyde” b/w “I Started Loving You Again” was yet another chart topper.

As told in an interview with the collection’s liner notes author, Haggard wrote “Workin’ Man Blues” because he “needed my own ‘Folsom Prison Blues,’ I needed a song that would express my way of life—I wanted it to be a blues song, and I wanted it to be in the key of A.” Astute musicians will note that the song was originally recorded in the key of A flat, but regardless, “Workin’ Man Blues” became a blue-collar anthem, and is still one of his most popular songs. When the song was released in June 1969, backed with “Silver Wings,” it again topped the chart at #1.

This collection closes with Merle Haggard’s final single of the 1960s: “Okie From Muskogee.” The song drew strong reactions as Haggard and The Strangers were testing it out on audiences before recording it, and according to pedal steel guitarist Norm Hamlet (Strangers 1967-present), “The first time we played it, the audience just went crazy. We knew it was going to be huge.” The single was indeed another #1 smash, but it was also something else entirely. It was the song that would change Merle Haggard’s career.

Mouse And The Traps - Fraternity Years
Mouse & the Traps are known principally for their “Nuggets” classic ‘A Public Execution’, a Dylan cop so brazenly authentic it even had the hallowed bard’s promo men fooled. Based in the city of Tyler, Texas and evolving from a group of pickers who populated Robin Hood Brians’ recording studio, Mouse (Ronnie Weiss) and his band ruled the region in the latter half of the 60s.

The Traps made a name for themselves not only with some incendiary performances but several regional hits, with ‘Execution’ making the national charts in 1966. Signed to the venerable Cincinnati indie Fraternity, for whom they were to cut a dozen singles, for years there were rumours amongst collectors that a Mouse & the Traps LP existed on the label. There never was, but now Big Beat has decided to condense the contents of their well-received Mouse & the Traps CD anthology “The Fraternity Years” into one all-killer vinyl edition.

It’s the kind of power-packed set fans would have hoped for back in the day, as the record showcases the band’s two very different but nevertheless compatible sides. On stage they were known for a tight and rocking showmanship, yet in the studio they expertly crafted folk-rock and pop gems with a deft production touch from Brians that oozed commercial appeal.

Each single release coupled speaker-shredders such as ‘Maid Of Sugar’ and ‘Lie, Beg, Borrow And Steal’, with radio-friendly items such as ‘Like I Know You Do’, ‘Cryin’ Inside’ and an almost-but-not-quite smash in ‘Sometimes You Just Can’t Win’ (as a bonus, it is featured here in a rare and previously unissued incarnation from late 1966, before being sweetened for eventual release).

Now, the best of the band’s recorded output has been newly remastered for wax. With such a precise distillation of their recorded legacy, the world can once again marvel at the quality and consistency that seemed to come naturally to Mouse & the Traps. “The Fraternity Years” LP is a fitting tribute to these fine musicians.

Merging the sounds of '50s R&B with the power of gospel vocals may have been conceived by some as the devils work, but as we all know, Ray forged quite the career out of it and became a pioneer and a major influence by devising a whole new form of black pop music. It is here though that we have both volumes of 'Modern Sounds in Country Music' with their wonderful, unique and groundbreaking fusion of jazz, R&B and C&W.

The first volume topped the US LP charts for 14 weeks, selling an estimated two million copies, and span off two multi-million-selling singles: 'I Can't Stop Loving You'/'Born to Lose' and 'You Don't Own Me'/'Careless Love'. Sonics - The Witch EP

Ty Karim - Wear Your Natural, Baby
With the resurgence of vinyl, Kent has returned to its extensive back catalogue and conjured up a sultry soul stomper of an LP from Ty Karim. It features all her famed dancefloor favourites from the exciting and super-rare 60s single ‘You Just Don’t Know’ and smooth 70s soul floater ‘Lightin’ Up’ to the hipper-than-hip call to ‘Wear Your Natural, Baby’, which from the fabulous cover photo we can see Ty did with style.

There are a couple of slower, soulful moments in the shape of the haunting big beat ballad ‘All At Once’ and the unlikely, yet successful, cover of James Taylor’s ‘Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight’. It’s the first time on vinyl for the bluesy ‘Don’t Make Me Do Wrong’ and Ty’s solo version of ‘If I Can’t Stop You (I Can Slow You Down)’, which is going to please DJs. VA: - Boppin' By The Bayou Again
A SECOND DIP into the gumbo that was South Louisiana’s take on rock’n’roll in the 50s and early 60s, the spicy mix of rockabilly and Southern rockers, heavily influenced by the sounds of R&B wafting from New Orleans and a lifetime of Cajun music.

Following the success of the first CD we are pleased to bring you another compilation full of the obscure and previously unissued. Most of our artists are Cajun born and bred. They grew up in the world where live music was a release from a tough existence: fishing, farming or toiling in the oil fields – but also reflected it. Hence Cajun music was split almost entirely into two genres: raucous good-time dance music or the sentimental, almost wrist-slitting ballads of broken hearts.

The advent of rock’n’roll put a modern twist to these themes; the uptempo rockers had the teenagers a-hoppin’ and a-boppin’ and the songs of shattered love were often the basis of swamp pop. In this series we are concentrating on the former, but it is highly likely that swamp pop collections could follow.

This disc brings you more goodies from Al Ferrier, Johnny Jano, Pee Wee Trahan (aka Tommy Todd), Jay Chevalier, Rod Bernard, Warren Storm, Rocket Morgan and Vince Anthony, all of whom appeared on the first Boppin’ By The Bayou (Ace CDCHD1345), plus treats from Mickey Gilley, Gene Terry, Jim Oertling, Perry LaPointe, Milton Allen, Rusty Kershaw, Cajun Joe, Tony Perreau, J. C. Politz, Bert Bradley, Glenn Owens, Robert Owens, Wiley Jeffers and a previously unheard group (I believe) called The Teen Hearts.

We have been able to present 28 tracks, 12 of which are previously unissued, through our special access to the tapes of the late J. D. Miller, the late Eddie Shuler and our good friend Floyd Soileau. I have been fortunate enough to travel the highways of South Louisiana and that Cajun corner of South East Texas, meeting many of the artists and forging deals with label owners such as Luke Thompson (Hammond) Carl Graffagnino (Carl) and Sarah Rentz (Pel). Oh yes, there are others in the pipeline so we plan further issues with absolutely no drop of standard.

Following in the footsteps and, thanks to improved digital transfer techniques, building on the pioneering work of John Broven, and of Bruce Bastin of Flyright Records, we are capturing the raw energy of a music form peculiar to a relatively small but hugely influential area of the United States of America.

For those who are also who are also bitten by the bug of rockin’ blues and R&B from South Louisiana, keep a watch for the sister series featuring those genres, the first of which Rhythm’n’Bluesin’ By The Bayou is slated for imminent release.

VA: - Boy Meets Girl TV Shows Vol. 1
This historic release of original live TV recordings by British /American Rock and Roll legends is a fine complement to anyone's collection of the classic Dreamboats and Petticoats series.

For the first time ever two complete Boy Meets Girls TV Shows from the 16th and 23rd February 1960 which have been digitally remastered from the original soundtrack recordings, featuring many previously unreleased songs by the compare Marty Wilde and guests including Billy Fury, Michael Cox, Johnny Gentle and the Vernon Girls. Also, taking time out from his UK tour, special guest rockstar Eddie Cochran who is accompanied by Joe Brown and the Firing Squad, the same musicians who backed Billy Fury on his famous 1960 10" rockabilly LP ? 'The Sound of Fury'.

The show also includes introductions and some very interesting interviews with some of the artists. There are also four bonus tracks from various shows between late 1959 and early 1960 by Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, Ronnie Hawkins and the show's cast which feature Billy Fury, Marty Wilde, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Joe Brown, Adam Faith and Jess Conrad. The CD contains a twelve page booklet which includes many original photos from the shows some not seen before and liner notes by Derek Genister.

VA: - Cliff Heard Them Here First
Although the majority of Cliff Richard’s hits have come with songs written expressly for him, or that he was the first to cut, the outside repertoire that he has recorded throughout his career has been more interesting than the choices of many of his contemporaries. Sir Cliff was not the only home-grown rocker to cover US material but, unlike his peers, he seldom went into a studio and simply made over the latest fast-rising American hit. With the help of his long time A&R man and producer Norrie Paramor, Cliff found a formidable number of fantastic songs hidden away on obscure US 45s and albums unavailable here.

Having previously celebrated the good taste in covers of his early hero in “Elvis Heard It Here First”, Ace felt it only fair to follow up with a companion volume that does likewise for the Peter Pan of pop. The tracks selected for “Cliff Heard Them Here First” show just how broad Cliff’s tastes were.

Most of his early singles featured original songs, but the material on to his many albums was something else again. “Cliff Heard Them Here First” brings you the original versions of two dozen songs which found their way into Cliff’s discography, ranging from gospel-influenced R&B (Ruth Brown’s ‘Somebody Touched Me’) to rockin’ doo wop (the Jayos’ ‘Tough Enough’), and from ultra-obscure west coast teen pop (Pete Votrian’s ‘We Have It Made’) to a little known Elvis Presley track (‘Angel’).

The booklet reflects the importance of the music that’s preserved here, with copious notes, label shots and ephemera for each track. All but one is new to Ace CD and several of them have never been reissued before in any format. Although the majority of our tracks stem from the first ten years of Cliff’s recording career, there are also examples of songs that Cliff came across and recorded in the early 70s, which show that his ear for a good song and a great record have never deserted him.

These tracks have stood the test of time as well as Cliff’s own career. “Cliff Heard Them Here First” is our salute to the man and the great taste he showed in embracing these songs.

VA: - Finders Keepers - Motown Girls 1961-67
It was Ace Records’ good fortune in 2009 to become the first independent record company in the world to acquire the rights to release previously unissued Motown material from the 1960s. Our tenth and latest Motown project is “Finders Keeper”, a compilation titled for the Marvelettes’ 1964 recording that first surfaced on the British Tamla Motown logo in 1980.

Women were a fundamental part of Motown’s early success: Raynoma Gordy was contributing harmonies and arranging skills before the company even got going; Janie Bradford co-wrote what became Motown’s most covered song, ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’; Mable John was Berry Gordy’s chauffeur as well as the first female artist he signed; Mary Wells was the first to take a Motown label record into the charts ... and the list goes on.

In this, Ace’s first various artists Motown CD, we focus on the company’s female acts – the well-known ones, the not-so-famous but much loved and a couple about whom we know next to nothing at all. It’s a half-and-half mixture of previously issued and unreleased titles. In the case of the reissued titles, we’ve taken the road less travelled and selected tracks which we feel haven’t had the attention they deserve down the years, amongst them very rare 45s from the Andantes and Saundra Mallett.

Collectors will particularly relish the dozen unissued tunes, which include superb offerings from Motown heroines Brenda Holloway, Martha and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight and Kim Weston and gems by the lesser-known Carolyn Crawford, Hattie Littles, LaBrenda Ben, Liz Lands and Linda Griner. We’ve even managed to dig up tracks by a couple of girls who’ve never had a track out before: Thelma Brown and Anita Knorl.

To spotlight just one track of special interest, ‘When Somebody Loves You (You’re Never Alone)’ by Gladys Knight and the Pips is so well-known to Motown fans that it’s hard to believe it’s never been released before. One of the first songs completed by the group after they signed to Motown in early 1966, it sat on the shelf for over a year before they returned to it and re-recorded their vocals in the summer of ’67. Then it was put back on the shelf where it’s been ever since – apart from numerous outings on collectors’ cassettes and CDs, sourced from an acetate that found its way into the public domain. We are delighted to be able to offer a legitimate issue of this classic mid-60s Motown track for the very first time, fully re-mastered from the original tape and sounding better than ever.

Elsewhere, the set includes some prime Motown stompers (‘Let Love Live’), torchy ballads (‘It’s Too Soon To Know’), R&B (‘My Black Belt’) and jazz (‘I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues’) – something for everyone, we hope.
