| Barrence Whitfield And The Savages - Plus 10 More For The Pot n the spring of 1985, my old friend Dave Woodhead, who had turned me on to many musical treasures, including Jim Ford’s “Harlan County”, lent to me an album he’d picked up on a trip to the States. When Dave recommended something I took notice. The LP was the debut release of an R&B band then unknown outside of the Boston area. It was one of those moments in which I had to disagree with Bo Diddley: more often than not you can judge a book by the cover. Likewise an album. This one displayed an amateurish illustration of a cauldron in a jungle which itself carried with it a no-nonsense implication. The name of the band also advertised a record that was going to be uncompromising. Barrence Whitfield and the Savages sounds, on its own, like a declaration of rock’n’roll authenticity. Uncompromising would have been a description of Barrence and the Savages that the Del Fuegos would rather not have had confirmed only a few days after Dave had lent me the LP. I was standing next to them, on the side of the stage in a huge quayside club in Boston. The Del Fuegos were the headliners that night. And the man opening for them was, at that moment, being borne around the room on the hands of a frenzied crowd, a little black ball of energy in a turban and dark glasses – honking, wailing, testifying and twisting – as his band, the Savages, some distance away on stage, ripped through the swagger of ‘Walking With Barrence’. The Del Fuegos looked like they wanted to go home. What positioned Barrence and the band way beyond any other rock’n’roll of the era was a unique marriage of Barrence’s personality and R&B shouter elan to the bounce and insolence of Peter Greenberg’s essentially rockabilly guitar style. With the addition of much ill-mannered saxophone, we have here a band which embodied the heart and soul of rock’n’roll. I hadn’t got to the end of Side 1 of Dave’s loaned copy before I called the number in the States on the back. It was that of Barrence’s manager, Andy Doherty. “They’re playing this Friday and Saturday,” he said. That did it. I just hopped on a plane and went to Boston for the weekend. Andy, a nice man and professional fan, put me up. Barrence and I became instant pals and soul brothers. The source of his R&B credentials was clear on a walk with him around Boston. Barrence could not pass a collectors’ record shop and actually worked part-time in one. He knew his stuff and, unusually for a young black guy at the time, he was a real enthusiast for old R&B, soul, blues and country. Around the city, Barrence’s popularity was astonishing. Everyone seemed to recognise and adore the little bugger. If he’d run for mayor, I’m convinced he’d have walked it. I came home to evangelise on Radio 1 about the live experience of the band whose debut LP tracks on my programme were already sending listeners daft. And I did what I could to help set up the first British dates for Barrence and the band. Now, at last released on CD, is that astonishing album. If you were with us in 1985, you’ll welcome a replacement for your elderly Savages vinyl. If you are about to meet Barrence for the first time, be prepared to be shaken to your soul by the LP which made me hop immediately on a plane to the States and compelled one listener, another R&B screamer called Robert Plant, to track me down and phone me at home to reserve his ticket for Barrence’s first British gig. The BopCats on vuodesta 1979 soitellut yhtye, joka pysyy elävänä ja kuosissa, sekä pöyhii tuuheaa turkkiaan alinomaa, eikä vähiten erityisesti Suomessa elinvoimaisesti toimivan Rockabilly-kulttuurin ansiosta. Alkuperäisestä kokoonpanosta, Make Lemola, Hara Pöyhiä, Taape Pöntinen, Utsi Uusitalo ja Mico Jansson, on miehistöt jonkun verran matkan varrella muuttuneet ja vaihdoksia on ollut eniten basisti-osastolla. Tämän päivän kokoonpanossa on alkuperäisistä mukana enää Utsi, mutta Mico häärii edelleen taustalla lähinnä taiteellista silmää vaativissa projekteissa, kuten esimerkiksi tämän levyn kansitaiteilijana. Rumpali Ari Eerola aloitti yhtyeessä vuonna 1982, ja soittaa edelleen tänäpäivänäkin bändissä, joten voidaan puhua jo (lähes) alkuperäisjäsenestä. | Cramps - File Under Sacred Music: Early Singles 1978-1981 10 x 7" Vinyl Singles + a stamped envelope with memorabilia. Very well done compilations of The Cramps early singles. Plus some tracks from the same period that were never issued on the single format. The vinyl box-set contains six repro sleeves and four new sleeves designed for this box-set. The Cramps were record collectors before they were a band. When Erick Purkhiser and Kristy Wallace met in 1972, they discovered they were both into the same kind of thing: the music of 15 years or so earlier that had been all about kitsch and shock and sleaze, with shitty sonics and snarling, hiccuping singers, and hilarious over-the-top bravado. In the early 1970s, being into "50s rock'n'roll" meant American Graffiti and Sha Na Na and "Happy Days". Wallace and Purkhiser preferred the nasty also-rans-- the records that actually tried to be the threat to society that people sometimes pretended pop music could be. It wasn't much of a leap to starting their own band in the same mode. Purkhiser reinvented himself as Lux Interior, the slavering, writhing, nearly naked, ectomorphic frontman of the Cramps, and Wallace was Poison Ivy Rorschach, a "bad girl" in leather and wigs and velvet who tore off one ichor-dripping 12-bar guitar riff after another. They didn't have a whole lot in common with their early punk scenemates other than big guitar noise, but punk rock gave them license to do sleazy, shocking, sopping wet rock'n'roll without having to bother with the usual thin veneer of respectability. The Cramps were an institution for over 30 years, until Lux's death in 2009. They were one of the few punk-era bands who were well served by aging, since they were trying to come off like creepy, depraved old people in the first place. But they were always a better singles band than an album band, and a way better live act than a singles band. Most of the songs that made their reputation are collected on this suitably trashy set. The vinyl version of File Under Sacred Music is, appropriately, a "collectible" box of the band's first 10 singles in replica sleeves--or rather, it would be except that four of them were never actually issued as singles at the time. (The Cramps always did snicker at anything that claimed to be authentic.) That's probably the ideal way to hear this material: Lux, Ivy, and their ever-rotating associates made the kind of strong, silly records that are best in hot-sauce doses of between three and six minutes. They occasionally came up with fabulously personal-space-invading originals like "Human Fly" and "New Kind of Kick", the latter of which features two lines that explain their raison d'être: "Life is short/ Filled with stuff" and "I learned all I know by the age of nine." The better part of File Under Sacred Music, though, is the crate-digging covers that were their calling card. Their first single (produced, like a lot of their early material, by Alex Chilton) was a cover of one of the most familiar trash-rock staples, "Surfin' Bird", extended to five minutes with a sloppy gnarl of guitar and drum noise. They subsequently shied away from anything that familiar. Instead, they turned their attention to obscurities whose quirks they exaggerated to the point of perversion. Jack Scott's "The Way I Walk" was slowed down to a psychotic limp, with Lux hyperventilating every line and Ivy screaming bloody murder in the background; Ronnie Cook & the Gaylads' nutty novelty "Goo Goo Muck" turned into a hilariously lascivious threat on which Lux shrieked, trilled, gurgled, and enunciated the title like it referred to whatever bodily fluids your parents feared most. The title of File Under Sacred Music is a joke about the dusty record stores the Cramps loved, as well as about their own discography: Songs the Lord Taught Us was the title of their first album, Songs the Cramps Taught Us the name of one of the many series of bootlegs of the original songs they covered. But the amazing, out-of-control music they saved from oblivion could show them up, at least on record. To hear the Novas' feral pro-wrestling novelty "The Crusher" ("Do the hammerlock, ya turkeynecks!") next to the Cramps' cover is to understand the difference between lunatics who've somehow ended up with a mic in front of them and record collectors doing a solid, deliberate impression of lunatics. |

| Dion - Yo Frankie If ever there was a couplet to re-establish the early stance of Dion records, it can be found in ‘King Of The New York Streets’: “I didn’t need no bodyguard. I just ruled from my backyard”. This opening track on “Yo Frankie”, Dion’s 1989 album that has long been on Ace’s re-release wish list, sets the scene firmly amid the pavements and haunts of the Big Apple, recapturing in one song all the imagery and associations we have from the man’s classic 50s and early 60s hits. “Yo Frankie” came about after Clive Davis and Roy Lott, the president and vice-president of Arista Records, had watched Dion perform at Radio City in 1987 and immediately offered him the chance to cut an album for them. Dave Edmunds, whose work Dion admired, was chosen to produce the record. Edmunds enlisted key players – including bassist Phil Chen, drummer Terry Williams and keyboard player Chuck Leavell – to form a tight rocking unit to drive the album. Dion prepared a wonderful set of songs, many written with his good friend Bill Tuohy, with others by Diane Warren, Bryan Adams and Tom Waits. Alongside the quality of the material and Dion’s vocal performance, one of the most successful elements of the album is the cohesiveness of the production. Edmunds achieves a strong contemporary rock feel strongly rooted in his Rockpile work that effortlessly offers a bridge back to the feel of Dion’s earlier recordings. There are just enough echoes of the past to make everything seem familiar while still feeling fresh and new. Dion’s vocal inflections extract the maximum from the lyrical imagery, notably on the castanet-filled ‘Always In The Rain’, his favourite track on the album. The sessions for the album attracted many big names to the studio, including Bryan Adams, who wrote, produced and played on ‘Drive All Night’. Paul Simon takes the lead and layered harmonies on the affectionately inserted ‘Little Star’ section of ‘Written On The Subway Wall’. As Lou Reed, another guest background vocalist, said in Dion’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction speech (reproduced in full in the booklet), “Dion could do all the turns. He had the chops and practically invented the attitude. After all, who could be hipper than Dion.” The “Yo Frankie” album stands as one of the real high points in Dion’s canon. | Lazy Lester - Rides Again - Expanded Edition I have been a huge fan of Lazy Lester’s brand of Louisiana swamp blues ever since that fateful day, many years ago now, when John Broven and Mike Leadbitter, of Blues Unlimited fame, introduced me to the Excello label and the production work of J.D. Miller, the label’s owner. I was hooked on Lester’s loping vocal and harmonica styling; the former owing a certain debt to one of the most influential bluesmen of that time, Jimmy Reed, while his harmonica work often appeared to emulate the phrasing and lilt of the accordion, an instrument much maligned, but which has been an all important part of Louisiana’s Cajun and Zydeco cultures. With the use of a pared-down rhythm section, utilising two guitars and assorted percussion to support his vocal and harmonica work, Lester created a sound that was truly unique – and almost irresistible. It had always been part of the master plan for the burgeoning Blue Horizon label – if indeed there had actually been a master plan – to record Lazy Lester, Lightnin’ Slim and Slim Harpo at some future date. It was not until 1987 that I finally succeeded in getting Lazy Lester into a recording studio. Many years of working in the studio in Crowley alongside J.D. Miller made Lester very singular of mind and perceptive as to what was required to get the best results. Those attributes stood him in good stead during these sessions. Musicians to be involved on the planned four-day sessions would be members of the Junkyard Angels, Blues’n’Trouble and special guests Bob Hall, Dave Bronze and John “Big Figure” Martin. The scene was set. I had requested that we should cut no more than three titles that Lester had recorded previously for Excello – and that’s exactly what we got. The others would be chosen from new song demos that had been especially written for the occasion, although only one of those actually made it to the studio and then was never completed – at least, not at that time. Lester had other material that he was anxious to commit to tape and we made the collective decision to also try and jam a couple of items and see what would happen. Now, you will have to take it from me that some US blues musicians can be tricky to work with. Not so with our man Leslie Johnson. He would prove to be open to almost any suggestion but also full of his own ideas – most of them pretty cool too. In an attempt to be as faithful to my good memories of those days back in May 1987, I got in touch with all the musicians that had participated to see if they might have had a different point of view. Everyone was of the same mind: Tim Elliott stating that his abiding memory was of “just how relaxed the sessions were and how everything just flowed – fabulous times”. On the 13 November 1988 “Rides Again” became the recipient of the W.C. Handy 1987-88 Blues Award For Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year (Foreign) presented by the Blues Foundation of Memphis. | Rock Ola - Beautiful Rough – Best Of Olan uusi kokoelma CD missä mukana myös muutama julkaisematon biisi. Onnea Rock-Ola 50v !! Suomen rock-kuninkaita on valittu jo 50-luvun lopulta lähtien ja onpa joku saattanut julistaa itsensä kuninkaaksi ilman valintaakin. Rock-Ola ei aatelista titteliä ole tarvinnut, vaikka lukuisten ihailijoittensa mielestä kuuluukin kuninkaiden joukkoon. Rock-Ola on antanut musiikkinsa puhua puolestaan ja jättänyt kilpailut niille jotka eivät omin avuin pärjää. Olli "Ola" Pihlajanmaa sai rokkikeuhkokuumeen monien ikäistensä tavoin 70-luvun lopun teinivuosinaan. Tauti osoittautui vaaralliseksi ja pysyväksi, muttei sentään tappavaksi. Jälkiseurauksena Olalle jäi legendaarisen levyautomaatin mukaan tullut taiteilijanimi Rock-Ola ja mikä parasta, ääni joka nosti hänet rock'n'roll-laulajien maailmanluokkaan. Kuten niin monen muunkin, myös Rock-Olan ensimmäinen idoli oli rock-kuninkaitten kuningas Elvis Presley. Elviksen vaikutusta on hänen laulussaan mahdotonta olla huomaamatta, vaikkakaan mihinkään imitointiin Ola on viisaasti osannut olla sortumatta. Maailmassa on ollut vain yksi Elvis, mutta ei ole toista Rock-Olaakaan. Näin on myös Olan toisen suuren vaikuttajan, jazzlaulajatar Billie Holidayn kohdalla. Holidayn vaikutus tuo Olan tulkintoihin sellaista herkkyyttä, jota harvemmin rock'n'rollin laulajilla kuullaan. Soittajanuransa Ola aloitti rumpalina, mikä kuuluu edelleen hänen laulunsa oivaltavassa rytmityksessä. Maanlaajuiseen maineeseen Ola sai kosketusta suosikkiyhtye Johnny And The New Dodgersissa, mutta kun Suomen suosituimman rockabilly-yhtyeen Teddy And The Tigersin johtaja Teddy Guitar pyysi häntä rumpaliksi uuteen Lonestars-ryhmäänsä, alkoi Ola saada ansaitsemaansa huomiota myös solistina. Tässä rockabillyn superbändiksi ylistetyssä kokoonpanossa olivat tasavertaisina laulajina niin Teddy Guitar, Buck Jones kuin Rock-Olakin. Kuten niin usein all-stars -tyyppiset kokoonpanot, jäi Lonestarskin lyhytikäiseksi. Sama ryhmä jatkoi vielä toisen albumin verran uudella nimellä The Falcons, mutta sen tultua tiensä päähän, Ola oli valmis lähtemään omille teilleen. Rock-Olan sooloura oli saamassa kansainvälistä nostetta. Ruotsissa riitti keikkoja eri säestysryhmien kanssa lähes joka viikonlopuksi, mutta vieläkin parempaa oli luvassa. Vuonna -81 Ola äänitti englantilaisen, vankkaa suosiota rockabillypiireissä nauttineen The Blue Catsin kanssa ensimmäisen oman albuminsa. Lopputulos oli huippuluokkaa, mutta kohtalo painoi peukalonsa alaspäin. Levy-yhtiö Rebel ehti kaatua ennen levyn ilmestymistä ja maailmanvalloitus jäi haaveeksi. Vasta vuonna '96 - viitisentoista vuotta levyn äänitysten jälkeen Jungle Records julkaisi kappaleet CD:llä Slap That Bass. Vaikka Rock-Ola tunnettiin mestarillisena laulajana ja uskolliset ihailijat pysyivät yleisössä, jäi levytysten määrä yllättävän vähäiseksi. Vähäiselle määrälle toi toki positiivista vastapainoa niiden korkea laatu. Seitsemäntuumaisia vinyylilevyjä ilmestyi eri yhtiöiden kautta parin vuoden välein ja Ola jatkoi yhteistyötä mm. Bippin' Pete Trion, Lost Soulsin ja Butterfingersin kanssa. Vuonna -90 Rock-Ola teki uuden aluevaltauksen liittyessään instrumentaaliyhtyeenä tunnetun The Charadesin laulusolistiksi. Perinteisestä rock'n'rollista siirryttiin reippaasti melodisempaan rockiin, mikä jäi pysyvästi kuulumaan Olan tulkinnoissa jatkossakin. Sooloura sai uutta puhtia lopulta vuonna -96, kun Bluelight Records julkaisi albumin Yesterday Is Gone. Se toi esiin Rock-Olan entistäkin monipuolisempana tulkitsijana, mutta valitettavasti levyllä soittanut kokoonpano jäi jälleen lyhytikäiseksi. Kun Ola sai vihdoinkin kasaan uuden yhtyeensä Rock-Ola And The Freewheelers, nousi se oitis suomalaisen rock'n'rollin kärkikaartiin. Bändin nimissä julkaistu Upskirt oli uuden vuosituhannen alussa sekä kaupallinen että arvostelumenestys. Komeasti sujui bänditoiminta jatkossakin, sillä vuonna 2004 julkaistu konserttitaltiointi Live On The Rocks oli vahva näyttö ryhmän keikkakunnosta. Vaikka Rock-Ola ei ole kaupallisessa mielessä saavuttanut ansaitsemaansa menestystä, intohimoiset musiikin ystävät tiedostavat hänen arvonsa. Kun Ola esittää rakastamaansa musiikkia, hän ei pelkästään laula. Hän antaa palan sisintään, osan sielustaan ja sydämestään. Sitä kuulija ei voi olla vaistoamatta ja se nostaa Rock-Olan illasta toiseen tulkitsijoiden kuningasluokkaan. - Honey Aaltonen |
