| Sonny Burgess And The Legendary Pacers - Gijon Stomp Sonny Burgess is one of the wildest rockers to record for the legendary Sun label in Memphis. He and his band the Pacers came out of Newport, Arkansas, with a hard-rocking style that, unlike that of most rockabillies, owed little to nothing in the way of a stylistic debt to country music. With his red-dyed hair, matching stage suit and guitar, and wild stage performances, Burgess and the Pacers made mincemeat of the competition on many of the early-'50s rock & roll package tours. Though his Sun releases never brought him much in the way of commercial success, his recordings nonetheless remain landmarks of the early rockabilly style. |

| Topi Sorsakoski - Kultaa Ja Timantteja 6CD Laulaja Topi Sorsakosken syntymästä tulee lokakuussa täyteen 60 vuotta. Juhlavuoteen liittyviä aktiviteetteja ehdittiin miettiä ja laittaa suunnitelmia alulle ennen Topin menehtymistä viime vuoden elokuussa. EMI Finlandin osalta ensimmäiset suunnitelmat toteutettiin viime maaliskuussa, jolloin julkaistiin Topi Sorsakosken viisi ensimmäistä sooloalbumia remasteroituina painoksina. Juhlavuoden huipentumana, ja tietenkin myös kunnianosoituksena taiteilijan elämäntyölle sekä muistolle EMI Finland julkaisee lokakuun 26. päivänä kuuden cd levyn boksin "Kultaa ja timantteja - laulajan juhlakokoelma 1976-2011". Pekka Nissilän toimittama kokonaisuus pitää sisällään tallenteita Topi Sorsakosken uralta aivan hänen ensimmäisistä ääniteraidoistaan Jussi Raittisen The Boys -yhtyeen riveissä vuodelta 1976, viimeiseksi julkaisukseen jääneen, viimevuotisen Tummansininen sävel -albumin raitoihin asti. Juhlakokoelma-boksi sisältää 121 kappaletta, ja keskeisin osa materiaalia koostuu julkaisuista niin Topin soolouralta, kuin hänen ajaltaan Agents-yhtyeen solistina. Lisäksi mukaan on koottu erikoisuuksia ja harvinaisuuksia keikoilta, tv-studioista sekä erilaisista levytyssessioista. Osa tästä materiaalista on ennenjulkaisematonta, osa muuten harvinaisuuksiksi luokiteltavia löytöjä. "Kultaa ja timantteja" -kokoelman varsinaisena kruunun jalokivenä on sen kuudes levy, otsikoltaan "Topi Sorsakoski & Agents: First Takes & Rarities". Levyn materiaalin koonnut Esa Pulliainen sukelsi tätä projektia varten Agents-äänitysten nauhamereen, ja keräsi sieltä mm. kuuden kappaleen sarjan Topin ja yhtyeen ensimmäisistä otoista debyyttialbuminsa In Beat -äänityssessioista vuodelta 1985. Boksin tekstivihkossa Esa kertoo tunnelmistaan: "Muistikuvat palasivat voimakkaina heti, kun asetin In Beatin moniraitanauhan studioni nauhuriin. Tuntui kuin olisin jälleen ollut Topin ja Agentsin kanssa Finnvoxin B-studiolla vuonna '85. Se oli hyvä tunne". Boksin viides levy, "Solistina ja vierailijana", pitää sisällään mm. aiemmin mainittujen Boys-raitojen lisäksi Tammilehdon veljesten Kalle Kiwes Blues Bandin esityksiä Provinssirock-festivaalilla 1980, Pessi Levannon johdolla tehtyjä jazzballaditulkintoja vuoden 2002 julkaisulta Sateenkaaren tällä puolen, Topi laulamassa Dallapén solistina 2010, sekä postuumisti toteutetun dueton "Anna" Topin ja veljensä Antti Tammilehdon kanssa. Antti täydensi vuoden 1999 levytyssessiosta löydetyn nauhoituksen puuttuneet lauluosuudet, ja näin Beatlesinkin 60-luvun alussa levyttämä, Arthur Alexanderin tekemä popsoul-klassikko saatiin kokoelmalle mukaan. "Kultaa ja timantteja" -kokoelman kaksi ensimmäistä levyä ovat edustava kooste Topi Sorsakosken soolouralta, vuoden 1985 Hurmio-albumista viime vuoden viimeisiin äänityksiin asti. Mukana on mm. myös ennenjulkaisematon levytys "Amorin nuoli". Kaksi seuraavaa levyä keskittyvät Agents-vuosiin 1986-1992, mukanaan kolme raitaa vuonna 2007 julkaistulta reunion-albumilta Renegades. Myös näihin molempiin levyihin on liitetty live-raitoja, jotka ovat kotoisin YLE TV2:n Laulava Sydän -ohjelmasarjan äänityksistä. Niissä Topin säestäjinä toimivat Agents sekä vahvistettu Yölintu, Esa Niemisen johdolla. Soundi-lehden haastattelussa marraskuussa 1995 Topi totesi: "Kun meikäläinen koskee johonkin kappaleeseen, siitä tulee aina minun näköiseni". Totta se oli. | Turun Filharmoninen Orkesteri - Tuttifrutti Keväällä 2009 Turun filharmoninen orkesteri esitti Dan Bornemarkin ja Puolalan musiikkiluokkien kuoron kanssa yhteistyönä lastenkonsertti suurproduktion ”Tutti Frutti”. Lasten Musiikkijuhlilla esitetty, kaiken kaikkiaan kuusi koululaiskonserttia ja koko perheen iltakonsertin sisältänyt suurtuotanto oli mieleen jäävä kokemus sekä yleisölle että siinä mukana olleille sadoille eri-ikäisille esiintyjille ja toteuttajille. Lukuisille nuorille soittajille ja laulajille yhteistuotanto ammattimuusikoiden kanssa tarjosi paitsi maukkaan musiikkielämyksen myös ainutlaatuisen esiintymiskokemuksen. Tuhansille lapsikuulijoille puolestaan svengaava, erilaisia rytmejä ja musiikkityylejä yhdistelevä konsertti oli samalla musiikkikasvatuksellinen kokemus, jossa myös yleisö pääsi osallistumaan konsertin kulkuun. Menestyksekäs produktio äänitettiin, ja siitä on ilmestynyt juuri ilmestynyt kaksikielinen tallenne nimeltä ”Tutti Frutti”. Cd-levyllinen hedelmäisiä ja mehukkaita laulujaTurun filharmonisen orkesterin tuottama lastenlevy ”Tutti Frutti” sisältää ruotsalaisen säveltäjän Dan Bornemarkin mukaansatempaavia, levyn nimen mukaisesti hedelmistä kertovia lastenlauluja. Tutti Frutti-, Mango Tango-, Ananas Jazz- ja Ragtime Lime -kappaleet vievät kuulijansa makujen matkalle musiikin maailmaan. Tutti Frutti -levy on kaksikielinen ja lauluja esitetään niin suomen kuin ruotsin kielellä. Turun filharmonisen orkesterin lisäksi levyllä esiintyvät Tutti Frutti House Band säveltäjä ja kapellimestari Dan Bornemarkin johdolla, Puolalan musiikkiluokkien kuorot ja lapsisolistit sekä Barnkören Sirkkala Singers. | VA: - More Miles Than Money 2CD More Miles Than Money: Journeys Through American Music is a book I researched and wrote between 2006-2008. In many ways I’d been waiting my entire life to write More Miles. Growing up in Mt Roskill – a working class suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, where there were no music venues, cinemas, pubs, nothing but churches and rugby fields – I took refuge in Mark Twain and Jack Kerouac’s adventures while AM radio (modelled on US radio) spun hits by Freddy Fender, the Amazing Rhythm Aces, Little Feat et al. I dreamed of escaping Auckland’s suburbs to ride Route 66 and Highway 61, ears and eyes open. Eventually I got to live my dream and More Miles is the story of those travels. I didn’t know it back then but Kiwi radio was often playing music akin to that which Charlie Gillett played on his Honky Tonk radio show in London. Discovering Charlie’s book The Sound Of The City sent me scouring through secondhand bookstores in search of old copies of Cream, Creem and Let It Rock, where the writings of Charlie and other likeminded journalists appeared. I’d go so far as to say that a feature Charlie wrote on the great New Orleans producer-arranger Harold Battiste (Cream #5, Sept 1971) was what initially inspired me to want to search out the largely unsung heroes of American music. At the same time as reading Charlie Gillett I was buying US imports on a variety of labels, with Arhoolie being my favourite. Mexican culture fascinated me, especially that which arose from the borderlands, the Tex-Mex/Tejano music. (Blame this on my dad taking me to see Sam Peckinpah’s westerns.) Discovering a bin full of Arhoolie Records in a downtown record shop introduced me to a treasure trove of magical Mexican American music and reading about Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz’s efforts to record the finest American vernacular music provided even more inspiration. Later on, Canyon Records would open my ears to how Native American culture celebrated its survival. Around the same time an uncle who loved jazz gave me Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” album – he found it too funky for his tastes. Talk about life-changing records: to this day Curtis remains my favourite US soul singer. I dedicated More Miles Than Money to Charlie, Chris and the indomitable spirit of Curtis Mayfield. Tragically, Charlie died earlier this year. He, like Curtis, lives on as an indomitable spirit and continues to inspire me. This compilation is, again, dedicated to Charlie, Chris and Curtis: the three Cs who helped me hear America. More Miles Than Money reflects on an America that made the mightiest music of the 20th Century. This compilation aims then to salute those who inspired me to ride US highways and document those I encountered as I wandered through honky-tonks, juke joints and barrios. Enjoy! | VA: - Rare Psychobilly From The Vaults: Vol. 1: X-Ray Studio Our first volume of Rare Psychobilly From The Vaults delves into the history of Alan Wilson's X-Ray Studios. Wilson was already a well-known figure on the Psychobilly scene having been a founder member of The Sharks, as well as publishing long running fanzine "Deathrow". His enthusiasm for music production began as a hobby, but he was soon attracting top name scene bands, as well as unknown bands wanting to make an impact. This 24 track collection features mostly unreleased recordings from Alan's days running his X-Ray studio. The Sharks and The Frantic Flintstones are the headline bands featured here, but there is plenty of obscure material from long gone bands which Psychobilly fans of the '80s and '90s will remember, most notably Breakout and The Men From Uncle. This collection of Rare Psychobilly From The Vaults will be sought after by those who were there at the time, as well as second-wave Psychobillies looking to discover long lost gems from the original Psychobilly movement. Skandinaavien johdolla tällä kokoelmalla mennään ja varsin ansaitusti, mutta toki sanansijaa annetaan muillekin genren top-artisteille Euroopasta ja USAsta. Brittien Jack Rabbit Slim on yksi genren tämän hetken suosituimmista ja arvostetuimmista rockabilly-ryhmistä antaen tällä kokoelmalla näytteen rauhallisemmasta ja tunnelmoivasta puolestaan. Irlantilais-lähtöisen Imelda Mayn voi varsin perustellusti sanoa olevan yksi tämän päivän tunnetuimista rockabilly-genrestä ponnistavista akteista ja joka on saanut hyvin näkyvyyttä ja kuuluvuutta yli musiikkirajojen lähivuosien aikana niin Briteissä kuin muuallakin Euroopassa unohtamatta pohjoista Amerikkaa ja Japania. Tälle kokoelmalle valikoitunut Imeldan Psycho-biisi ei todellakaan jätä ketään kylmäksi. Muun euroopan tasosta antaa oivan näytteen pitkän linjan rockabilly-ryhmä Hillbilly Moon Explosion Enola Gay-lainallaan. Rapakon takaista osaamista tuo kokoelmalle Brian Setzer omalla versiollaan Red Hot-biisistä, joka on yksi rockabillyn biisiklassikoiden kulmakivistä ja tuoreempaa näkemystä saamme Hillbilly Casinolta, joka talvella käväisi myös Suomessa keikoilla. | VA: - The 100 Club Anniversary Singles 6T's 1979-2009 was 26 and needed to hear more of that inspiring, original 60s club soul music that was a recent revelation. There were no dances to go to, so my new mate Randy and I thought we’d give it a go ourselves. Thirty years on, we’ve tragically lost Randy and a few others along the way, but we’re still opening the club doors for the fans of that same great music, as we have for a generation now. The first Kent LP we issued featured the very essence of that 6Ts Rhythm ‘N’ Soul Society who can be seen whooping it up on the LP cover, our resident DJ Ian Clarke, an inspiration to so many, designed most of the first 50 sleeves and Randy himself told me which tracks to go with, if I was ever in any doubt. The label and club were always inextricably linked and when I had the bright idea of a free record, instead of a poxy cloth patch, it was Ace who copped the plea. First up - Mary Love, Etta James and the Ikettes: simple and very effective. It was the essence of R&S. Two years later, though, the penny dropped. I realised we were sitting on some dance floor dynamite with all those unissued 60s soul tracks begging to be allowed into collections where as singles they would be revered. In September 1986 Melba Moore’s ‘Magic Touch’ was issued on the second Kent 6Ts Anniversary Single and with those internationally recognised, dramatic opening piano bars, the legend began. Perhaps I’m guilty of a little self-delusion here, but I believe this series of 25 singles is up there with the best original US 60s soul series on any UK label and the standard on this CD demonstrates just that. The “big”, tracks are all here: the San Franciscan TKOs, Chuck’s ‘Loneliness’, the Magicians historical vocal to ‘Double Cookin’’, Lorraine Chandler and Gigi with her charming Charmaines. But those are the ones we regularly hear played out in clubs across the Northern Soul galaxy. It’s the ones who I believe have yet to have their day that excite me, particularly now that I’ve had time to reassess their charms. Take Johnnie Taylor’s growling and grooving on ‘Please Let Me In’; it won’t outdo J J Barnes’ original Ric Tic version, but listen to those opening clean, crisp guitar licks and dig those Staxy horns as they drive the song. Here’s another one for you - the Devonnes singing Larry Banks and Jaibi’s ‘Doin’ “The Gittin’ Up”’. Two lovers with superb writing and singing talents, who could turn a lightweight dance number into a work of art. Not destined to become a dancefloor staple, but a stunning record nonetheless, is ‘Can’t Say No’ by the M-Ms and the Peanuts. Get your fine selves down to Ladbrokes and put a tenner on Mill Evans ‘Ain’t You Glad’ being the next £100 anniversary 45. Butch has picked up an original acetate and is playing it and all of a sudden its quality is appreciated. Then there’s the sheer class of Sharon Scott’s Detroit-inspired masterpiece ‘(Putting My Heart Under) Lock And Key’, Peggy Woods’ underrated Modern mid-60s mover ‘Love Is Gonna Get You’ and owzabout Wally Cox’s Golden State Recorder -produced soulful reading of his Wand stomper ‘This Man Wants You’. The notes are substantial; I ramble on about a subject which, after all, is very close to my heart and now I finally know the truth about one of the greatest soul records ever from Ms Carla Thomas, I share it; not even sparing the boss’s blushes. Strike me down if I ain’t gorn and revealed the 30th anniversary single before the dance ‘as ‘appened. But you don’t know what the flip is yet (any more than me), do yer? ‘Arboro ‘Orace (ACE RECORDS) NB: due to contractual problems we have had to drop the Moments aka The Fabulous Impact single, but you can still read all about it in the booklet. |
