| Janis Martin - The Blanco Sessions Janis Martin was one of the few female recording artists working in the male-dominated rockabilly field in the 1950s. Nicknamed “the female Elvis” for her dance moves, the Sutherland, Va. native, born in 1940, recorded a number of singles for RCA Victor and Pallette from 1956 to ’61. Her first single, “Will You Willyum” b/w “Drugstore Rock ’n’ Roll,” sold more than 750,000 copies, landing her national TV appearances. In 1960, her first husband demanded she leave music. But she returned in the ’70s, and in 1995 made a guest appearance on Rosie Flores’ "Rockabilly Filly" album. It’s here that the saga of Janis Martin’s farewell album, "The Blanco Sessions", began. The Blanco Sessions, produced by Flores and Bobby Trimble, will be released on Cow Island Music on September 18, 2012. In 2006, Flores left Los Angeles to return to Austin and found Trimble, an old friend from Big Sandy’s Fly-Rite Boys, living there too. Trimble found a stellar and amazing team of Austin musicians to back Martin up including Dave Biller (guitar), Beau Sample (bass), T-Jarod Bonta (piano) and Trimble on drum. Kelly Willis also sings a beautiful duet with Janis. And in April 2007, the whole band, Janis, and her husband Wayne, drove from Austin to Blanco, Texas where the sessions took place. They cut eleven songs in only two days. Martin left the Blanco Sessions feeling that she had accomplished something really great, as she told Flores in a phone call that brought tears of joy to Flores’ eyes. But just a few weeks later, Flores received another call from her with the shocking news that she had been diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer. Martin passed away just four months later. Janis Martin died leaving behind an enormous legacy and thousands of dedicated rockabilly fans who still mourn her passing. Since that sad day in 2007, her name has been praised with awards and accolades. In 2008 she was inducted as an outstanding woman into the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History in her hometown of Danville, Virginia. In 2010, she was recognized by the Library of Virginia at its Virginia Women in History Celebration. She was also featured in the Beth Harrington-directed documentary Welcome to the Club — The Women of Rockabilly that was broadcast on PBS. Flores says “I thank the great Janis Martin up in rock ’n’ roll heaven for inspiring me to do this. I thank you for giving me the chance to help with your final recordings. I will see you again someday, and we’ll work on the next batch of songs! These final recordings are for all of those listeners out there who love your voice, your spirit, your heart, and your rock ’n’ roll soul.” |

Jorma Kääriäinen esiintyy syksyn mittaan lukuisissa konserteissa Riku Niemi Orchestran kanssa. Hedelmällisen yhteistyön antia nähtiin äskettäin myös Ylen TV2:lla televisioidussa Valkea ruusu -konsertissa. Kokoelmalevyn ensimmäinen single on uusi versio Jimmy Webbin säveltämästä ja aikaisemmin Pate Mustajärven, Topi Sorsakosken, Harri Marstion ja Jorman esittämästä kappaleesta "Mä elän vieläkin". Kappaleen englanninkielisen "The Highwayman" -version esitti Johnny Cashin, Waylon Jenningsin, Willie Nelsonin ja Kris Kristoffersonin muodostama superkokoonpano The Highwaymen. Uusi versio on taltioitu Jorman ja RNO:n yllämainitusta konsertista. Jorma Kääriäinen on laulanut jo yli 40 vuotta ja siitä ammatikseen yli 30 vuotta. Pitkän ja hienon uran salaisuudet ovat olleet aito innostus, vahva tahto ja jäljittelemätön tyyli. Jorma Kääriäisestä on pitkän uransa aikana tullut yksi rakastetuimpia ja tunnetuimpia suomalaisen rock-iskelmän tulkitsijoita, jonka valtava suosio on vain jatkanut nousuaan vuodesta toiseen. | Rock Ola - Beautiful Rough – Best Of Olan uusi kokoelma CD missä mukana myös muutama julkaisematon biisi. Onnea Rock-Ola 50v !! Suomen rock-kuninkaita on valittu jo 50-luvun lopulta lähtien ja onpa joku saattanut julistaa itsensä kuninkaaksi ilman valintaakin. Rock-Ola ei aatelista titteliä ole tarvinnut, vaikka lukuisten ihailijoittensa mielestä kuuluukin kuninkaiden joukkoon. Rock-Ola on antanut musiikkinsa puhua puolestaan ja jättänyt kilpailut niille jotka eivät omin avuin pärjää. Olli "Ola" Pihlajanmaa sai rokkikeuhkokuumeen monien ikäistensä tavoin 70-luvun lopun teinivuosinaan. Tauti osoittautui vaaralliseksi ja pysyväksi, muttei sentään tappavaksi. Jälkiseurauksena Olalle jäi legendaarisen levyautomaatin mukaan tullut taiteilijanimi Rock-Ola ja mikä parasta, ääni joka nosti hänet rock'n'roll-laulajien maailmanluokkaan. Kuten niin monen muunkin, myös Rock-Olan ensimmäinen idoli oli rock-kuninkaitten kuningas Elvis Presley. Elviksen vaikutusta on hänen laulussaan mahdotonta olla huomaamatta, vaikkakaan mihinkään imitointiin Ola on viisaasti osannut olla sortumatta. Maailmassa on ollut vain yksi Elvis, mutta ei ole toista Rock-Olaakaan. Näin on myös Olan toisen suuren vaikuttajan, jazzlaulajatar Billie Holidayn kohdalla. Holidayn vaikutus tuo Olan tulkintoihin sellaista herkkyyttä, jota harvemmin rock'n'rollin laulajilla kuullaan. Soittajanuransa Ola aloitti rumpalina, mikä kuuluu edelleen hänen laulunsa oivaltavassa rytmityksessä. Maanlaajuiseen maineeseen Ola sai kosketusta suosikkiyhtye Johnny And The New Dodgersissa, mutta kun Suomen suosituimman rockabilly-yhtyeen Teddy And The Tigersin johtaja Teddy Guitar pyysi häntä rumpaliksi uuteen Lonestars-ryhmäänsä, alkoi Ola saada ansaitsemaansa huomiota myös solistina. Tässä rockabillyn superbändiksi ylistetyssä kokoonpanossa olivat tasavertaisina laulajina niin Teddy Guitar, Buck Jones kuin Rock-Olakin. Kuten niin usein all-stars -tyyppiset kokoonpanot, jäi Lonestarskin lyhytikäiseksi. Sama ryhmä jatkoi vielä toisen albumin verran uudella nimellä The Falcons, mutta sen tultua tiensä päähän, Ola oli valmis lähtemään omille teilleen. Rock-Olan sooloura oli saamassa kansainvälistä nostetta. Ruotsissa riitti keikkoja eri säestysryhmien kanssa lähes joka viikonlopuksi, mutta vieläkin parempaa oli luvassa. Vuonna -81 Ola äänitti englantilaisen, vankkaa suosiota rockabillypiireissä nauttineen The Blue Catsin kanssa ensimmäisen oman albuminsa. Lopputulos oli huippuluokkaa, mutta kohtalo painoi peukalonsa alaspäin. Levy-yhtiö Rebel ehti kaatua ennen levyn ilmestymistä ja maailmanvalloitus jäi haaveeksi. Vasta vuonna '96 - viitisentoista vuotta levyn äänitysten jälkeen Jungle Records julkaisi kappaleet CD:llä Slap That Bass. Vaikka Rock-Ola tunnettiin mestarillisena laulajana ja uskolliset ihailijat pysyivät yleisössä, jäi levytysten määrä yllättävän vähäiseksi. Vähäiselle määrälle toi toki positiivista vastapainoa niiden korkea laatu. Seitsemäntuumaisia vinyylilevyjä ilmestyi eri yhtiöiden kautta parin vuoden välein ja Ola jatkoi yhteistyötä mm. Bippin' Pete Trion, Lost Soulsin ja Butterfingersin kanssa. Vuonna -90 Rock-Ola teki uuden aluevaltauksen liittyessään instrumentaaliyhtyeenä tunnetun The Charadesin laulusolistiksi. Perinteisestä rock'n'rollista siirryttiin reippaasti melodisempaan rockiin, mikä jäi pysyvästi kuulumaan Olan tulkinnoissa jatkossakin. Sooloura sai uutta puhtia lopulta vuonna -96, kun Bluelight Records julkaisi albumin Yesterday Is Gone. Se toi esiin Rock-Olan entistäkin monipuolisempana tulkitsijana, mutta valitettavasti levyllä soittanut kokoonpano jäi jälleen lyhytikäiseksi. Kun Ola sai vihdoinkin kasaan uuden yhtyeensä Rock-Ola And The Freewheelers, nousi se oitis suomalaisen rock'n'rollin kärkikaartiin. Bändin nimissä julkaistu Upskirt oli uuden vuosituhannen alussa sekä kaupallinen että arvostelumenestys. Komeasti sujui bänditoiminta jatkossakin, sillä vuonna 2004 julkaistu konserttitaltiointi Live On The Rocks oli vahva näyttö ryhmän keikkakunnosta. Vaikka Rock-Ola ei ole kaupallisessa mielessä saavuttanut ansaitsemaansa menestystä, intohimoiset musiikin ystävät tiedostavat hänen arvonsa. Kun Ola esittää rakastamaansa musiikkia, hän ei pelkästään laula. Hän antaa palan sisintään, osan sielustaan ja sydämestään. | Roy Young - The Best Of 50 Years 2CD One of rock'n' roll's greatest entertainers celebrating his half century as a professional musician has put together this 2 CD set of tracks spanning that entire period of rock 'n' roll, blues and soul described by one critic as "a mixture between Little Richard, Ray Charles and Joe Cocker". Roy auditioned back in 1959 for Jack Good and performed on the now legendary BBC TV Show "Oh Boy!" Other TV Shows followed and Roy found himself opening for The BEATLES in Hamburg and subsequently spent 4 years playing on the Reeperbahn. Brian Epstein asked Roy to return to London with The Beatles as he could arrange a recording contract for him-Roy declined as he was committed to his performances in Germany. After returning to the UK Roy joined CLIFF BENNETT & The REBEL ROUSERS and performed on their hits. He released solo albums "The Roy Young Band" in 1971 and "Mr Funky" in 1972 and tracks from those albums are included on this 2CD set. In 1977 DAVID BOWIE asked Roy to play keyboards on his album "Low" which they recorded in Paris. After many years of living in the USA Roy returned to UK in 2000 and returned to live performances including Beatles Festival in Berlin and Star Club, Hamburg 40th anniversary.
