Aikaisemman Original-julkaisun tapaan formaateilla on osittain eri biisit. The BopCats on vuodesta 1979 soitellut yhtye, joka pysyy elävänä ja kuosissa, sekä pöyhii tuuheaa turkkiaan alinomaa, eikä vähiten erityisesti Suomessa elinvoimaisesti toimivan Rockabilly-kulttuurin ansiosta. Alkuperäisestä kokoonpanosta, Make Lemola, Hara Pöyhiä, Taape Pöntinen, Utsi Uusitalo ja Mico Jansson, on miehistöt jonkun verran matkan varrella muuttuneet ja vaihdoksia on ollut eniten basisti-osastolla. Tämän päivän kokoonpanossa on alkuperäisistä mukana enää Utsi, mutta Mico häärii edelleen taustalla lähinnä taiteellista silmää vaativissa projekteissa, kuten esimerkiksi tämän levyn kansitaiteilijana. Rumpali Ari Eerola aloitti yhtyeessä vuonna 1982, ja soittaa edelleen tänäpäivänäkin bändissä, joten voidaan puhua jo (lähes) alkuperäisjäsenestä. Doris Troy placed only one song on the US Hot 100, but what a song! ‘Just One Look’ has endured as a much-covered standard, heard in countless movies and commercials. If that one wonderful hit is all you know of singer-songwriter-producer-arranger-session vocalist-actress Doris Troy, then here’s chance to catch up with what you missed. I’ll give you a hint – you’ve missed a lot. Doris Troy earned every hyphen. “I’ll Do Anything: The Doris Troy Anthology 1960-1996” amasses, for the first time ever, songs from every phase of a most illustrious career, ranging from her very first recording to her last. Affectionately dubbed Mama Soul, Doris Troy cut her teeth singing in church and worked as a teenaged usherette at New York’s legendary Apollo Theater before joining Cissy Houston, Dionne and Dee Warwick and Judy Clay in forming the premier New York studio backup group (two Chuck Jackson classics that feature cameos by Doris are included herein). She released two singles in 1960 as Doris Payne and a 1961 duet under the name Jay & Dee (all three make their digital debut here) before striking gold with her self-penned superhit. 10 sterling examples of her tenure with Atlantic Records comprise the heart of this set, including the irresistibly catchy ska-tinged ‘What’cha Gonna Do About It’ and ‘Please Little Angel’, co-written with a then-fledgling writing team named Ashford and Simpson. Incidentally, Doris co-wrote the song that gives this anthology its title, ‘I’ll Do Anything’, with another nascent writing combine you may have heard of named Gamble and Huff. Both sides of the ultra-rare 1967 Capitol single ‘He’s Qualified’ and ‘Face Up To The Truth’ make their CD bow here. After that release, Doris decamped to England, again becoming the go-to girl for background vocals on classic hits for Dusty Springfield, George Harrison, Pink Floyd and the Stones, to name a few. In cahoots with Harrison, she released a brilliant LP on Apple in 1970, represented on this disc by ‘Ain’t That Cute’ and ‘You Tore Me Up Inside’. Two definite high points are 1974’s Dandy Livingstone-produced reggae-inflected romp through Eddie Floyd’s ‘Don’t Tell Your Mama’ and a sparkling disco workout from 1977, ‘Can’t Hold On’, both new to CD. By this time, Doris had moved back to the States where she eventually starred in the musical based on her life, Mama I Want To Sing, written by her sister, New York radio luminary Vy Higgensen. The sisters are heard on a high-spirited duet released here for the first time anywhere. Doris’ final recording was for Ace in 1996 – ‘Hear Me Calling’, a duet with British blue-eyed soul wunderkind James Hunter. Doris’ heartfelt, gut-wrenching reading of the gospel standard ‘Take My Hand, Precious Lord’ provides a poignant and powerful coda to a poignant and powerful collection. The customary worth-the-price booklet includes rare photos and cuttings, remembrances from friends and colleagues Ady Croasdell and David Nathan, and Mick Patrick’s biographical essay drawing from a previously unpublished 1995 interview with Mama Soul herself. | Martti Huuhaa Innanen - Vasemman Puntin Salaisuus 2CD Martti “Huuhaa” Innanen esitti vuonna 1993 Radiomafiassa Josper Knutaksen toimittamassa Komisario Kottelin -sarjassa kaksitoistaosaisen jatkokertomuksen Vasemman puntin salaisuus. Kertomus sai osakseen suuren suosion ja aina sen esittämisestä lähtien Innanen-fanit ovat epätoivoisesti yrittäneet saada ohjelmasta uusintaesityksiä, äänityskopioita Yleisradiosta sekä vaihdelleet keskenään kasettikopioita sarjan niistä pätkistä, jotka ovat onnistuneet talteen saamaan. Nyt seuraa erinomaisen tärkeää tietoa Innas-faneille. Pitkä odotus on palkittu ja Rocket Records julkaisee yhteistyössä Yleisradion kanssa kuunnelmasarjan tupla-cd:nä. Alkuperäismateriaalin täydennykseksi kokoelmalle on äänitetty Josper Knutaksen uudet välispiikkaukset. Kuten asiaan tietenkin kuuluu, levyltä löytyy myös radiosarjan tunnusmusiikkina kuultu The Stripper sekä loppumusiikkina kuultu Innasen esittämä Miesten tango. Julkaisun kansilehdykästä löytyy toimittaja Josper Knutaksen kirjoittamat saatesanat. Kokoelman on koostanut ja tuottanut Jarmo Jylhä, joka on tehnyt hedelmällistä yhteistyötä Innasen kanssa jo kolmenkymmenen vuoden ajan. |

| Rock Ola - Beautiful Rough – Best Of Olan uusi kokoelma CD missä mukana myös muutama julkaisematon biisi. Onnea Rock-Ola 50v !! Suomen rock-kuninkaita on valittu jo 50-luvun lopulta lähtien ja onpa joku saattanut julistaa itsensä kuninkaaksi ilman valintaakin. Rock-Ola ei aatelista titteliä ole tarvinnut, vaikka lukuisten ihailijoittensa mielestä kuuluukin kuninkaiden joukkoon. Rock-Ola on antanut musiikkinsa puhua puolestaan ja jättänyt kilpailut niille jotka eivät omin avuin pärjää. Olli "Ola" Pihlajanmaa sai rokkikeuhkokuumeen monien ikäistensä tavoin 70-luvun lopun teinivuosinaan. Tauti osoittautui vaaralliseksi ja pysyväksi, muttei sentään tappavaksi. Jälkiseurauksena Olalle jäi legendaarisen levyautomaatin mukaan tullut taiteilijanimi Rock-Ola ja mikä parasta, ääni joka nosti hänet rock'n'roll-laulajien maailmanluokkaan. Kuten niin monen muunkin, myös Rock-Olan ensimmäinen idoli oli rock-kuninkaitten kuningas Elvis Presley. Elviksen vaikutusta on hänen laulussaan mahdotonta olla huomaamatta, vaikkakaan mihinkään imitointiin Ola on viisaasti osannut olla sortumatta. Maailmassa on ollut vain yksi Elvis, mutta ei ole toista Rock-Olaakaan. Näin on myös Olan toisen suuren vaikuttajan, jazzlaulajatar Billie Holidayn kohdalla. Holidayn vaikutus tuo Olan tulkintoihin sellaista herkkyyttä, jota harvemmin rock'n'rollin laulajilla kuullaan. Soittajanuransa Ola aloitti rumpalina, mikä kuuluu edelleen hänen laulunsa oivaltavassa rytmityksessä. Maanlaajuiseen maineeseen Ola sai kosketusta suosikkiyhtye Johnny And The New Dodgersissa, mutta kun Suomen suosituimman rockabilly-yhtyeen Teddy And The Tigersin johtaja Teddy Guitar pyysi häntä rumpaliksi uuteen Lonestars-ryhmäänsä, alkoi Ola saada ansaitsemaansa huomiota myös solistina. Tässä rockabillyn superbändiksi ylistetyssä kokoonpanossa olivat tasavertaisina laulajina niin Teddy Guitar, Buck Jones kuin Rock-Olakin. Kuten niin usein all-stars -tyyppiset kokoonpanot, jäi Lonestarskin lyhytikäiseksi. Sama ryhmä jatkoi vielä toisen albumin verran uudella nimellä The Falcons, mutta sen tultua tiensä päähän, Ola oli valmis lähtemään omille teilleen. Rock-Olan sooloura oli saamassa kansainvälistä nostetta. Ruotsissa riitti keikkoja eri säestysryhmien kanssa lähes joka viikonlopuksi, mutta vieläkin parempaa oli luvassa. Vuonna -81 Ola äänitti englantilaisen, vankkaa suosiota rockabillypiireissä nauttineen The Blue Catsin kanssa ensimmäisen oman albuminsa. Lopputulos oli huippuluokkaa, mutta kohtalo painoi peukalonsa alaspäin. Levy-yhtiö Rebel ehti kaatua ennen levyn ilmestymistä ja maailmanvalloitus jäi haaveeksi. Vasta vuonna '96 - viitisentoista vuotta levyn äänitysten jälkeen Jungle Records julkaisi kappaleet CD:llä Slap That Bass. Vaikka Rock-Ola tunnettiin mestarillisena laulajana ja uskolliset ihailijat pysyivät yleisössä, jäi levytysten määrä yllättävän vähäiseksi. Vähäiselle määrälle toi toki positiivista vastapainoa niiden korkea laatu. Seitsemäntuumaisia vinyylilevyjä ilmestyi eri yhtiöiden kautta parin vuoden välein ja Ola jatkoi yhteistyötä mm. Bippin' Pete Trion, Lost Soulsin ja Butterfingersin kanssa. Vuonna -90 Rock-Ola teki uuden aluevaltauksen liittyessään instrumentaaliyhtyeenä tunnetun The Charadesin laulusolistiksi. Perinteisestä rock'n'rollista siirryttiin reippaasti melodisempaan rockiin, mikä jäi pysyvästi kuulumaan Olan tulkinnoissa jatkossakin. Sooloura sai uutta puhtia lopulta vuonna -96, kun Bluelight Records julkaisi albumin Yesterday Is Gone. Se toi esiin Rock-Olan entistäkin monipuolisempana tulkitsijana, mutta valitettavasti levyllä soittanut kokoonpano jäi jälleen lyhytikäiseksi. Kun Ola sai vihdoinkin kasaan uuden yhtyeensä Rock-Ola And The Freewheelers, nousi se oitis suomalaisen rock'n'rollin kärkikaartiin. Bändin nimissä julkaistu Upskirt oli uuden vuosituhannen alussa sekä kaupallinen että arvostelumenestys. Komeasti sujui bänditoiminta jatkossakin, sillä vuonna 2004 julkaistu konserttitaltiointi Live On The Rocks oli vahva näyttö ryhmän keikkakunnosta. Vaikka Rock-Ola ei ole kaupallisessa mielessä saavuttanut ansaitsemaansa menestystä, intohimoiset musiikin ystävät tiedostavat hänen arvonsa. Kun Ola esittää rakastamaansa musiikkia, hän ei pelkästään laula. Hän antaa palan sisintään, osan sielustaan ja sydämestään. Sitä kuulija ei voi olla vaistoamatta ja se nostaa Rock-Olan illasta toiseen tulkitsijoiden kuningasluokkaan. - Honey Aaltonen |

| Topi Sorsakoski - Kultaa Ja Timantteja 6CD Laulaja Topi Sorsakosken syntymästä tulee lokakuussa täyteen 60 vuotta. Juhlavuoteen liittyviä aktiviteetteja ehdittiin miettiä ja laittaa suunnitelmia alulle ennen Topin menehtymistä viime vuoden elokuussa. EMI Finlandin osalta ensimmäiset suunnitelmat toteutettiin viime maaliskuussa, jolloin julkaistiin Topi Sorsakosken viisi ensimmäistä sooloalbumia remasteroituina painoksina. Juhlavuoden huipentumana, ja tietenkin myös kunnianosoituksena taiteilijan elämäntyölle sekä muistolle EMI Finland julkaisee lokakuun 26. päivänä kuuden cd levyn boksin "Kultaa ja timantteja - laulajan juhlakokoelma 1976-2011". Pekka Nissilän toimittama kokonaisuus pitää sisällään tallenteita Topi Sorsakosken uralta aivan hänen ensimmäisistä ääniteraidoistaan Jussi Raittisen The Boys -yhtyeen riveissä vuodelta 1976, viimeiseksi julkaisukseen jääneen, viimevuotisen Tummansininen sävel -albumin raitoihin asti. Juhlakokoelma-boksi sisältää 121 kappaletta, ja keskeisin osa materiaalia koostuu julkaisuista niin Topin soolouralta, kuin hänen ajaltaan Agents-yhtyeen solistina. Lisäksi mukaan on koottu erikoisuuksia ja harvinaisuuksia keikoilta, tv-studioista sekä erilaisista levytyssessioista. Osa tästä materiaalista on ennenjulkaisematonta, osa muuten harvinaisuuksiksi luokiteltavia löytöjä. "Kultaa ja timantteja" -kokoelman varsinaisena kruunun jalokivenä on sen kuudes levy, otsikoltaan "Topi Sorsakoski & Agents: First Takes & Rarities". Levyn materiaalin koonnut Esa Pulliainen sukelsi tätä projektia varten Agents-äänitysten nauhamereen, ja keräsi sieltä mm. kuuden kappaleen sarjan Topin ja yhtyeen ensimmäisistä otoista debyyttialbuminsa In Beat -äänityssessioista vuodelta 1985. Boksin tekstivihkossa Esa kertoo tunnelmistaan: "Muistikuvat palasivat voimakkaina heti, kun asetin In Beatin moniraitanauhan studioni nauhuriin. Tuntui kuin olisin jälleen ollut Topin ja Agentsin kanssa Finnvoxin B-studiolla vuonna '85. Se oli hyvä tunne". Boksin viides levy, "Solistina ja vierailijana", pitää sisällään mm. aiemmin mainittujen Boys-raitojen lisäksi Tammilehdon veljesten Kalle Kiwes Blues Bandin esityksiä Provinssirock-festivaalilla 1980, Pessi Levannon johdolla tehtyjä jazzballaditulkintoja vuoden 2002 julkaisulta Sateenkaaren tällä puolen, Topi laulamassa Dallapén solistina 2010, sekä postuumisti toteutetun dueton "Anna" Topin ja veljensä Antti Tammilehdon kanssa. Antti täydensi vuoden 1999 levytyssessiosta löydetyn nauhoituksen puuttuneet lauluosuudet, ja näin Beatlesinkin 60-luvun alussa levyttämä, Arthur Alexanderin tekemä popsoul-klassikko saatiin kokoelmalle mukaan. "Kultaa ja timantteja" -kokoelman kaksi ensimmäistä levyä ovat edustava kooste Topi Sorsakosken soolouralta, vuoden 1985 Hurmio-albumista viime vuoden viimeisiin äänityksiin asti. Mukana on mm. myös ennenjulkaisematon levytys "Amorin nuoli". Kaksi seuraavaa levyä keskittyvät Agents-vuosiin 1986-1992, mukanaan kolme raitaa vuonna 2007 julkaistulta reunion-albumilta Renegades. Myös näihin molempiin levyihin on liitetty live-raitoja, jotka ovat kotoisin YLE TV2:n Laulava Sydän -ohjelmasarjan äänityksistä. Niissä Topin säestäjinä toimivat Agents sekä vahvistettu Yölintu, Esa Niemisen johdolla. Soundi-lehden haastattelussa marraskuussa 1995 Topi totesi: "Kun meikäläinen koskee johonkin kappaleeseen, siitä tulee aina minun näköiseni". Totta se oli. | VA: - Before The Fall - 24 Prelapsarian Cuts f evidence were needed that all music is connected, this collection could well be it. You might think Australian punk, proto-Krautrock and Sister Sledge could only co-exist on a compilation called “Now That’s What I Call Utterly Unrelated”, but actually, beyond “Before The Fall”’s basic conceit, a few fragile connections start to present themselves. Henry Cow acted as support on a Captain Beefheart tour. Beefheart’s style was significantly influenced by bluesmen such as Leadbelly. Leadbelly and Pete Seeger hung out in 40s New York. What else? ‘There’s A Ghost in My House’ and ‘Jungle Rock’ were both hits years after their original release. Fall fans wouldn’t automatically associate ‘The Mummy’ and ‘Transfusion’, yet listening to the originals reveals both as satire at the expense of the beatniks. ‘Transfusion’, like ‘Kimble’, owes much of its uniqueness to the innovative use of sound effects. ‘Kimble’ and ‘People Grudgeful’ are connected thanks to the fractious relationship between the artists concerned. ‘Grudgeful’ and ‘$ F--oldin’ Money $’ both play parts in stories of apparently unscrupulous label bosses. ‘$ F--oldin’ Money $’, ‘Rollin’ Danny’, ‘Transfusion’ and ‘Pinball Machine’ were all the work of artists who died before their time, some a little more before their time than others. It’s fun to spot these connections but, as a Fall fan, I wouldn’t pin too much significance on them. Mark E Smith covered Monks’ tracks without even knowing their titles. He’s covered others without, by his own admission, being able to track down the publishing rights, knowing all the lyrics, or in the case of ‘War’, even remembering the tune. So while in some cases these originals will seem very familiar to Fall fans – the relative commercial success of ‘There’s a Ghost In My House’ and ‘Victoria’ is probably attributable to the fact the Fall didn’t muck about with the originals too much, while Smith’s vocal on ‘Mr Pharmacist’ is remarkably similar to Jeff Nowlen’s original – others are interesting as starting points for very different Fall readings. These originals also demonstrate a lack of Smith snobbery towards music to which other contemporary bands would rapidly turn up their noses. Pop, blues, prog and daft novelties are all accorded the same respect, or lack of it. As a fan of 60s garage, the Monks, Other Half and Sonics cuts on this collection were very familiar to me, but the journey into other genres has been a bit of a revelation. The habit of lifting rocksteady/reggae melody lines for retooling on other tracks led to a diverting trip which started with ‘People Grudgeful’ and took in related tracks such as ‘Longshot’, ‘Jackpot’ and ‘People Funny Boy’. Comparing versions of ‘Bourgeois Blues’, dipping a toe into the ocean of trucking music – all of this I would never have found myself doing had it not been for the cross-genre nature of Mark E Smith’s eclectic tastes.
