MIKE BELL & THE BELLTONES - BARE BONE ROCKABILLY Mike Bell & The Belltones come from Helsinki, Finland and they play 50´s-style rockabilly & rock´n´roll. The band was officially formed in late 2008 and they have since gathered a great following with their live shows all over European festivals: Finland, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, England, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland and Russia. The first Mike Bell & The Belltones album “Scream & Holler” was released by Goofin´ Records in 2010 and it was recorded live in a vintage studio in Berlin. The record got fantastic reviews and good radio play. A Song from the album “Lord, I´m in trouble again” was selected on a Finnish documentary. In 2011 they toured and made an EP “Baby, Make a Move” with an American 50´s rockabilly legend Huelyn Duvall. Their songs also appeared on international compilations and Goofin´ Records released a self-titled EP from the band. The second album “Payback” will be released in June 2012. They will also continue to tour the top rockin´ clubs and festivals across Europe. | VA: - Rock And Roll All Night Long - Tribute To Hurriganes ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT LONG - A ROCKABILLY TRIBUTE TO HURRIGANES FINLAND, THE LAND OF A THOUSAND LAKES Exaggerating slightly, one could say that the same number of Hurriganes cover bands can be found in this sparsely populated country and a few more in our neighboring Sweden. To this day, in pubs, clubs and other concert venues, Hurriganes classics get the dance shoes going wild. Hurriganes’s position as a trailblazer cannot be overemphasized. The band proved that, also from our own country, a rock ‘n’ roll band could come along and sound just as good as their world-wide counterparts and with a great style to boot. I decided to use national boldness and put together a tribute album to this legendary group. My idea was to gather together, from the rockabilly, original rock ‘n’ roll and teddy boy scenes, bands and performers for many of whom Hurriganes has marked the starting point to the world of real rock ‘n’ roll. In Finland, in the early 1970s there were few restaurants, alcohol was expensive and in the leftist art world, it was generally held that the United States was the world’s threat and the Soviet Union, the bringer of peace. Also in the world of music, there were few exceptions to the rule of progressive and art rock performers, for whom the idea of rocking out was to stare at their “nailed-to-the-floor” shoes and demonstrate, with wrinkled brow, their virtuoso playing skills and long solo sections. But somewhere smoldered a rebellious seed and time began to be ripe for a new wave of rock ‘n’ roll, the rock ‘n’ roll revival. In 1971, Remu Aaltonen formed Hurriganes, along with Ile Kallio and Cisse Häkkinen. The group worked hard and its popularity began, slowly but surely, to increase. Hurriganes’s sound was, from the start, completely modern, although the band also played 1950s and 60s rock ‘n’ roll, instrumental rock and ballads. Cisse Häkkinen’s bass playing and Remu Aaltonen’s drumming formed the spine of Hurriganes’s sound. The duo’s playing wasn’t necessarily virtuoso but neither did it sound academic. One could say that it was a taste of life. In Remu’s head, the exclamations and phrases of “rock English” were created, forming a truly original singing style. British musician, Nick Lowe, called Remu’s singing style the Esperanto of rock music. Ile Kallio, Albert Järvinen and Janne Louhivuori took care of the guitarists’ job, each in turn and occasionally even together. Each one of these guitarists had his own strengths and each of their styles contributed to the band’s overall sound. Hurriganes broke audience records in both Finland and Sweden and in 1977 the group was at the top in its home land, without a single noteworthy challenger. But in the metropolitan area, a 1950s trend had started and it spread, little by little, throughout Finland, creating an unprecedented rockabilly boom. During 1978, Hurriganes’s number one position among the youth of Finland, switched to Teddy & The Tigers. From 1977 – 1981 Finland gave birth to more and more new ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly bands, which strove for the old original American sound or switched to playing British teddy boy rock ‘n’ roll. The estimate, that during these so called “crazy years”, there were, in Finland, over 200 groups which described their style as rockabilly, is probably pretty close to the truth. During 1982, this trend also began to fade but, during these years, a firm base for Finnish rock ‘n’ roll culture was built and it is still going strong today. Hurriganes played their last show in 1984. In 1988, they did a short comeback tour that had its moments, although it wasn’t very successful. Jussi Syren & The Groundbreakers live in Finland, a long way from Bill Monroe’s home in Kentucky. But, make no mistake, they understand and are committed to the essential elements of traditional bluegrass: lots of drive, tight harmonies, first rate musicianship, and lyrics that are not overpowered by unnecessary showmanship. A single by Jet Harris, "My lady" was released in 1967, and features Pete Gage on vocals. Many will remember Pete from the 90's, when he was a frontman for Dr Feelgood for five years, and was taking care of vocal duties for example on their "On the road again" -album. A couple of solo-albums has been released too, "Give it with a feeling" in 1994, and piano-blues-album "Out of hours" in 1997. The latter was recorded in Finland, and released by finnish record company Goofin' Records, and got a very good reviews all over the world. Last couple of years Pete Gage has taken it easy in his native region in Frome England, but still all the time has toured with different line-ups, doing all kinds of gigs, from small clubs to a big blues-festivals. Mainly in England, but also in other countries like Spain and Finland. In Finland he has always had a large and loyal fan base, and is a very much loved and wanted performer especially in all kind of blues happenings and festivals. Recording wise things are also happening at the moment. Pete has recorded a brand new album "Tough Talk" (GRCD 6165) at Juha Takanen's famous Äänistudio in Finland. It has now been released by famous finnish rootsmusic label Goofin' Records. On the album Pete is taking care of all vocal duties, he also plays piano throughout the album, and adds some tasty harmonica on a couple of tracks. Most of songs are new ones written by artist himself. There's twelve original songs along with three covers, one of them being the old favorite "Standing at the crossroads" written by Mickey Jupp, which is given the all time rockin' treatment. The style is bluesy and very rootsy; blues, rhythm & blues and rock'n'roll are having an important role all through the record, and also some hints of cajun, country and jazz are there to spice up the whole thing. "Tough Talk" features a bunch of best players from the finnish roots scene. Also a legendary english guitarist Gypie Mayo (ex-Dr Feelgood, ex-Yardbirds) is playing on six tracks. |

British rocker Johnny Spence was born in February 1944, and started playing rock'n'roll already in late 50's. In the early 60's he played bass for Johnny Kidd and the Pirates for five years. They made their first recording on their own (without Kidd) already in 1964, the single "My babe"/"Casting my spell" (featuring Spence also on vocals) is ever since considered a classic. In the mid 70's the classic line-up of the Pirates came back, and very soon got the reputation of being the greatest and wildest rock'n'roll trio of all time. From that time we have the saying "never follow the Pirates". They were unbeatable on stage, and also made some great albums like "Out of their skulls", "Skull wars", "Happy birthday rock'n'roll" and "Fistful of Dubloons". The Pirates (with Spence and Green still on board) are still very much active and still the best rock trio in the world. During all these years Johnny Spence has also played with various other artists, for example bass for Jerry Lee Lewis. Doctor's Order is Finland's finest and toughest rock'n'roll trio, who started in 1998 and ever since has toured and amazed audiences with its hard driving music and action packed stage shows all over Finland and also in Sweden. So far they have released six studio albums, which have sold very well and which have got raving reviews. Last year was band's 10th anniversary, and to celebrate the occasion the Doc's toured more than ever and released an album "Seleccion Grande" (Goofin' Records), which was a very fine set of rock'n'roll with some rhythm & blues flavours with a very big rockin' sound and featured seventeen original tracks. Pete Hoppula, Blues News Magazine The appropriately titled record "When A Blue Note Turns Red Hot", is a mixture of great, classic music styles- from old school Rhythm and Blues or black Rock and Roll, to a touch of Stax Soul plus Sam Cooke, or even a jazzy Bossa Nova. This is Little Rachel's third solo record, and the first one with the Hogs of Rhythm. Little Rachel performed with Timo Tarkela and Harri Saanio of the Hogs at the Green Bay Rockin 50's Fest in 2005. Soon afterwards, she went to Finland to borrow the entire band from their regular singer, Dr. Snout (Ari Ahvonen) for several performances. It was a magical combination from the start, and recording an album together became a priority. The record was recorded in August of 2008 in Helsinki, Finland, and released on the Goofin' Records label in May of 2009. It was produced and mixed by Jyrki Häyrinen- the man behind the Barnshakers' sound. It includes Lester Peabody on lead guitar, the powerful sax section of Juho Hurskainen and Timo Tarkela, and also the vocal group, The Relics, on two of the tracks. The Hogs of Rhythm are virtuosos of old style music- able to play everything from rock n' roll, to blues, to jazz. They have a true skill and knowledge for how old style, rockin' rhythm and blues should be played, and they make a powerful union with the versatile, soulful, rockin' rhythm of the Little Rachel style. She is little, but she is loud. She sparkles and shines, and her soulful, sexy, sassiness is complimented by the excitement of the hard-driving, dirty swing that only the Hogs of Rhythm can provide. | The Pirates - Live In America AVAILABLE ON CD AND LP ! It was in the 1950s when three young Londoners - Mick Green (guitar), Johnny Spence (bass and vocals) and Frank Farley (drums) - first joined forces to form a band. Their first offerings followed the Skiffle craze (The Wayfaring Strangers) soon it was Rock'n'Roll (Johnny and the Ramrods) The Pirates got their first big break in the early 1960s when they became the backing band for British rock'n'roll singer Johnny Kidd, who is best known for his big hits like "Shakin' all over", "Please don't touch", "I'll never get over you" and "Hungry for love". During their years together, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates toured extensively in Britain and Europe (especially in Hamburg), and on several occasions with the Beatles or Rolling Stones as their warm-up act. On one occasion, Frank the Pirate and Brian Jones had a fistfight after a gig at the famous 100 Club in Oxford Street, London. No need to mention (or should I say munchen?!?) who got beaten! Johnny Kidd and the Pirates recorded some of the very best British rock'n'roll and rhythm & blues of that era. The Pirates also made the first recordings on their own without Kidd in 1964. The single "My babe" / "Casting My Spell" featured Spence also on vocals, and is ever since considered a classic. Tragically, Johnny Kidd was killed in a car-accident in Lancashire in October 7th 1966. He was just 30 years old. In December 1976 The Pirates featuring Mick, Johnny and Frank returned with a vengeance. A one-off gig was a huge success, wowing the press and fans alike, and so their never-ending tour started. There is a saying in the music business; "never follow the Pirates!". Anyone who has seen them in action will understand that they were unbeatable on stage, and to follow them was definitely a mission impossible and an artistic suicide. They also gave the world four stunning albums; "Out Of Their Skulls", "Skull Wars", "Happy Birthday Rock'n'roll" ( or "Hard Ride" if you were American) and "Fistful Of Dubloons", which are also now considered rock'n'roll classics. In November 1978 The Pirates took to the road for a four show tour in America, and had a big time there. Everything about the tour was huge; the venues, stages, audiences, limousines, hotel suites, cigars, bars... At this point the Pirates had been working relentlessly for two more years, playing hundreds of gigs and somehow finding time to record and release both of the "Skull" albums. So when the call from America came, they were up for it, ready to rock'n'roll and play better than ever. Luckily one of these legendary gigs was recorded, but it took some 30 years for Johnny Spence to come across the tape from his archive collection. And for goodness (note: I'm not using the F-word here!) sake here are the merciless threesome, live in America getting even with all guns blazing. Keeping the Pirate-flag flying high and taking no prisoners. This stunning, long-awaited 16 track set features all of their classic songs, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest live Rock'n'Roll records of all time. It presents the greatest rock-trio of all time at the peak of their powers and wilder than ever.
